    Lap band removed!

I am having my band revision to VGS in a couple of weeks. ON MY DIME! I guess my insurance felt that 2 WLS covered were the max! LOL Background here......Banded in 2005 ( insured), Band slipped and rebanded 2012 (insured), Revision set for 12/27 ( Out of pocket). Insurance denied because of prior surgeries. Oh well screw 'em! I'll pay for #3 my own dang self! Hopefully, with God's grace, this will be the answer!
  2. My revision was a bit more... complicated than most. Due to unforseen issues (basically one anastomosis was not done right), the surgery in March had to be aborted after 3hrs. New surgery was scheduled for June to allow for healing. 2nd surgery, the surgeon discovered another surprise. My common channel was only 25cm and the configuration of my intestines was not the rny configuration. He had to back my common channel to 300cm, cut out a portion of my pouch and small intestines due to necrotic tissue. This surgery took 8hrs! So almost 9months post op, I do have better restriction than I did with my surgery 22 years ago, but I'm absorbing more. I'm down 50lbs so it's been slow going, but I'm still losing. Thanks for asking, Hope you are doing well on your journey.

    Negative reactions to getting plastics.

I am 58 and about to go for my last surgery. I am 9 years out of my lap band surgery and on my best day I am down almost 70 lbs. I’ve had it all done, breast lift with aug, tummy tuck, and a revision, lower body lift, and many rounds of Lipo. I started with plastic work around 2 years after surgery. I say wait a little while and get close to your goal weight. This is a personal decision. Do not listen to others that have not had the experience. No one else sees or feels the way you do when you look in the mirror. You lose weight and see all the imperfections and want to correct them. Nothing wrong with that. The pain is tolerable and well worth the result. Interview many Doctors and do your research. Find one that you are comfortable with and drag your hubs there to listen and see. He will change his mind. My parents weren’t on board but could see how much happier I was with myself. In the long run, we are all pleased. Good luck.

Have you ever swallowed something by mistake?

Thanks for the tip. It finally feels like it is making its way down. It has taken all day. It made for an uncomfortable day. Wishing you the best! I agree with you. This no easy journey. I feel that way with going in for revision after having complications. I have finally gotten to the point of not caring what others think. Yes, I had surgery and I am still obese for many reasons. The insurance coordinator is not very welcoming and treats me like I failed not really understanding why... This whole journey is filled with humbling experiences, realities and some tears...oh and swallowing cherry pits!

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

From what I understand there are 2 main reasons. 1. If you have a large amount of weight to loose, they will start with the sleeve and when you max out the potential weight loose they can do a revision to bypass and you kind of "start over" and loose a lot more weight than if you just had the sleeve. 2. Acid reflux/GERD. Apparently it is VERY common to end up with it from the sleeve surgery and sometimes it becomes unmanageable which in turn can cause serious damage so they so a revision to bypass to stop the GERD. I am only speaking from, what I have read and what my surgeon explained to me. I have SEVERE GERD so the sleeve was not even an option for me. I am on 2 medications already, and eat tums constantly and have damage to my esophagus already. I need it resolved before I end up with major problems.

Looking To Start The Gastric Bypass Buddy Threads

I have had quite a journey with my Lapland and now hoping to get revision in June or July. I was banded May 2009 and lost 77 pounds in a year. In May 2011 my port got infected and then two weeks later the band eroded. I have been approved by my insurance to have revision . Just completed all test just two more things b4 my meeting w the dr next Friday! I'm very nervous! Need all the buddies I can get
  7. I had a revision for GERD. began regaining weight at 6 months post revision. I've had issues with rapid gastric emptying after my bypass, I feel limited restriction and have blood sugar issues. Most people only get these issues with sugars or simple carbs ie: dumping. I get it after everything. I started wegovy a week ago and it seems to be helping.
  8. Sorry I can’t offer any help in regards to a revision to bypass & rheumatoid arthritis. I did find the article below about managing methotrexate side effects. (I was interested because I have a non bariatric friend who takes it for RA too.) May be worth another conversation with the bariatric surgeon in regards to the suggestion that taking folic acid can reduce side effects. Repairing your hernia may alleviate some of your reflux issues too. It’s unfortunate that while it’s helpful managing arthritic pain, methotrexate can also cause weight gain. ☹️ https://www.arthritis.org/health-wellness/treatment/treatment-plan/disease-management/methotrexate-managing-side-effects

I was afraid this would happen...

I am so so sorry It's not common but sometimes people do have serious complications by no fault of their own. You seem to be one of the unlucky 5% that do. If I were in your shoes, I'd get a second opinion from another bariatric surgeon. The reason being is, if the problem is something like the original surgeon didn't place it correctly, you'll want a non-biased second opinion to tell you. I'd also want a second opinion on the scar tissue and possibility for a revision surgery. Just my opinion. Again, I'm truly sorry this happened to you.

    I am sad and angry...

((((((((((Oh Babs! )))))))))) I am so sorry you got this news. Yeah, "medically neccessary" is quite the quandry, especially when viagra, et. al, get approved, but birth control is another matter entirely.... It took a long time to get my second skin graph after my motorcycle accident. I cannot tell you the number of Dr.s who said I just needed to baby the original site. Baby it hell! I had to sleep with a wet cloth on my leg just to help control the uncontrolable itching. In warm weather I would have to spend all day with my leg elevated to held reduce the seepage. And they kept telling me that I just needed to baby it an to quit whining about it. The insureance company kept turning the revision down bacause it wasn't "necessary." Fight this Bab! Fight! Fight! Fight! You know that we are all here for you. We all send you such wave of positive energy, we remember you in our prayers, no matter whom we pray to. If you need help with your letters, I know we have some very eloquent writers here who would jump at the chance to help you. You said the skin on your thighs is breaking down, are you bleeding? I should think at the very least you are suseptable to skin infections similar to celulitus. You might think about that angle when you write your letters. (((((((((( Babs! ))))))))))

    UK Sleevers

Hello Helen, Nice to meet you. I think my surgery took around 1 hour 30 mins but it was a straight laproscopic procedure on a virgin (so to speak) stomach. So basically I don't really know what you should expect for a revision and open surgery I am afraid. Regarding pain it was fine, please don't worry. I was dosed with morphine directly after surgery and my nausea from the anasthetic was treated very promptly via intravenous drugs. I was walking around the day of the op, but I was done laproscopically so I don't know how you will be I am afraid. I was leak tested the day after using liquid that I had to swallow in front of an xray machine. I don't know if they do it differently in the UK, this was in the Czech Republic. I was on liquids for 2 weeks and mushies for the next 2 weeks and then normal after that. I think different surgeons have different regimes though. Please keep me posted on how you get on. Do you still have the slipped lapband inside you? I can send you my diet plan if you like, PM me for it. But your own doctor will have their own plan I would hope. Where are you getting this done? All the best, Jane

This is going to sound so obvious it's stupid but please do try your best not to vomit AT ALL between now and your surgery date. If you have a slip and a lot of inflammation they may not be able to revise you to a sleeve at the same time as band removal. You need for all the swelling to go down in order to have a safe revision. Risks are already triple for a revision vs. if you never had a band. Swelling makes it much worse. Milk and yogurt? (eye roll)

    Jan 2019 bypass buddies

Hi Mimi! Also January 29th. In Michigan. I don’t have that pain under my incisions. I’m not even sure what it might be? I had revision from band to bypass. Did you find out what the pain was and has it gotten better?

    Jan 2019 bypass buddies

I had my pre-op yesterday (1/8/19). I actually had 5 appointments. 1) pre-op (surgery is 1/21/19), 2) heart sonogram with cardiologist, 3) blood work, 4) dietitian, and 5) stress test wit the cardiologist. I was surprised to learn I do not have to do clears for 2 week pre-op. My sheet says either 4 protein shakes a day or low calorie, low carbohydrate dies of no more than 50-60 carbs per day. No snack type foods, sweets, or starches (bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, corn, peas, cereal, crackers, etc.) I am having a revision from sleeve to bypass.

    NSV shout outs

Today was such a great day. I went to the informational seminar with a friend today because she is interested in having VSG done after seeing my pictures and reading my story on my Facebook. I was super excited to find out that my original surgeon returned from deployment recently, and today was his first day back on rotation. I talked to a lady about the sleeve vs. bypass at the seminar, and then I went down to the surgery clinic. Dr. Michel walked out, and his mouth dropped open. We hugged, and he told me how amazing I looked. Dr. Riley (the surgeon that assisted in my revision and picked up my care when Dr. M deployed) told him "there's a skinny lady in the waiting room wanting to see you." Dr. M didn't know that it was me, and he didn't recognize until I said something to him. It was amazing to see him after all this time. The last follow up I had with him was September 15th, and a lot of has transpired since then. He told me how proud of me he was, and for me to schedule my 1 year follow up so we can talk more. It may not seem like much, but he was very hesitant to set a goal weight, and wasn't sure how I would really do as a revision patient. Least to say, today was a victory for me. I not only proved to myself, my family, my friends that I could succeed, I proved to my surgeon that I would and did WIN. We went through a lot together as patient/surgeon. I even told him at one point that he was the 3rd most important man in my life next to my husband and son. Literally, that man saved my life, and truly made living this life possible. He was fabulous during my recovery, and we were both upset when he got orders to deploy. He was my support system here while my husband was gone. Remember it's the little things.

    Port repair next week

Hi there! I'm a 35 year old married female living in the Seattle area. I was banded in 2004 by Dr. Kuri and his great team in Mexico. Surgery went off without a hitch and in my first year I lost nearly 70 pounds. I got pregnant with my first child in 2006, gained all of my lost weight back... went back to fills and fighting to get the weight off again, but never found that sweet spot again. I was contemplating a revision to RNY and three days before I was to go in for that surgery my insurance pulled the rug out and said "Ooops! Our bad - we can not cover the revision because you are no longer fat enough".. in so many words. Another year went by, my weight was up and down... in the gym starving myself with a trainer I can get it off, but in "real life" not so much. During this time I really struggled with feelings of failure, and all things associated with my band not working - the "my fault" stuff. I got pregnant with my second (and final) baby summer 2009, and following my hospital stay, I had a bad reaction to a medicine that caused major inflammation in my esophagus and viola! My local fill/follow up doctor found that there was a break in my tubing near my port!! So now it all made sense.. no wonder my band was not working!?! So now I am scheduled for a repair surgery on Monday 1/3/11, and basically starting over in every way. Back to my original weight ((sadly)), and aiming for 100lbs. Thanks, and keep well!

    lap band LONG TERM

PoPo, I agree with you 300%! My mother has had both hips AND both knees replaced due to arthritis and complicated by her weight. She is now 78 and a bit too old to get a band but I hope to not have the surgeries she has had to have due to her weight. Also she has high blood pressure and cholesterol... all of which could be made better by loss of weight. For me the risk of the surgery and any complications was far less than the risk of being overweight. I am 45, been overweight (or yoyo'd) for most of my life. It wasn't going to get better from here unless I did something drastic. If a revision is needed later on, so be it... I'm still better off! AND, if I do need knee/hip replacements like my mom I will be healthier to have those operations. My mom's weight made it more difficult for the surgeon to do the operations!

Hi Babygirl, This thread is really old, and I am pretty sure that Amerihealth has revised their coverage policies since 2003. The only way to tell is to call them and ask what the coverage criteria are for bariatric surgery. If it's an exclusion on your plan they'll tell you. Good luck!!

Congratulations on your surgery! It's hard seeing that fluid gain, but I had a revision surgery on Tuesday and I've lost 10 lbs in the last two days. It comes off quickly. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
  21. My tummy tuck held up AMAZINGLY well and, so far, the fat grafting to my butt seems pretty well intact. I haven't been losing the fat there on my way back down. The main issue I've had is that my left breast implant has become malpositioned with the weight gain and re-loss. Like as I gained the weight, the real fat tissue expanded and pushed the implant out of position and now that I am losing that fat again, the malpositioning is obvious. I will have to have a revision to fix it. I've had a consult with a local surgeon and I've had some talks with my original surgeon back in Mexico. I haven't completely decided what and when I am going to do about it. I've decided to sort of take a "wait and see" approach, since I still want to lose about 25 more pounds. I think I'd rather wait until I'm at goal and maintaining for a bit before addressing it.

I'm not post op, but my surgery is June 21st. I'm going with the bypass because I have severe GERD. My surgeon said the RNY is less likely to make it worse. I also researched it a lot and noticed that with the sleeve my GERD most likely stay the same or become worse. One surgery is plenty for me. I wouldn't want to get the sleeve and have to turn around and revise to RNY. I have about 120 pounds to lose. I hope this helps! I'm looking for surgery buddy's if you are interested! Take care!
  23. Short answer - I can't eat that much. I am also a band revision, so we may have some similar issues. I'm not sure how far out from surgery you are... I am 2 months out and I can eat somewhere between 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup of food at each sitting - I can't really eat 1/2 a cup, but I can eat just a little more than 1/4 cup. Soft foods are more comfortable to eat, and I can eat more of them. It takes me between 5 and 20 minutes to eat my food. At 20 minutes, I am stuffed with the measurements I mentioned above. Examples of what fills me up: one scrambled egg with 1/4 piece of whole grain toast - VERY full 4 small pita crackers with flax seed with a Trader Joes mini-brie bite broken in 4 pieces - comfortably satisfied one packet of plain organic oatmeal with flax - sometimes i finish it, sometimes i don't. VERY full. My mothers Day treat: a quarter of a patty melt on rye - STUFFED. I eat about 6 times a day in order to get to 600-800 calories, I really have to work pretty hard to eat that much. Sounds like my capacity is less than yours, but your mileage may vary. My basic measure is that I can eat about 4-5 bites of anything and that's it. If I don't stop, I am VERY uncomfortable. I never drink within and hour after I eat. I have stopped counting my calories because I am consistenly eating the same things every day and I average about 100 to 150 per meal. I only lose 1 to 2 pounds a week, but I am a low BMI revision and I don't expect to lose faster. Ultimately, eating 1000 cals a day will not leave you in a stall forever. Having one day where you over-indulge is not the worst thing in the world. We all do it. Lara
  24. Hi-- I have not seen anyone on this board talk about a revision beyond the initial sleeve. But, I think we would all like to hear your experience and what your doctor says about your sleeve. Also, if you can include details on how big your pouch is and any reason your doctor thinks the surgery didn't work for you. Good luck on your surgery--
  25. It usually starts at about 4 months. I started taking Biotin before I had lap band surgery. I took it the entire time and i am still taking it. I don't think it does anything, but I am afraid to stop taking it. I lost a lot of hair with lap band surgery and then lost it again when I had my revision. I was taking Biotin and hair and nails Vitamins the entire time. I also used Nioxin Shampoo.
