Hi, I have an appointment with the bariatric surgeon on 9/10. I hope this will lead to the surgery, hopefully this year! I was wondering, are there any foods you ate before that you can no longer eat since your sleeve surgery? And if you can't eat certain things, why not? Just curious Thanks, Maureen

You don’t need the additional stress, I’m sorry you are dealing with this. The surgeon in this video does a really good job explaining weight loss/gain and surgery. I learned a lot by watching it, if you think it would help ask your daughter and husband to watch it with you. Dr Weiner metabolic Dr. Weiner has a lot of good videos abut bariatric surgery. pre packed meals snacks breads

My doctor/nutritionist do not want me to ever eat any product that contains yeast. Not sure why yeast specifically, but I know they do not want me to have most breads and similar products. They also do not want me to have any rice and only limited portions of wheat pasta. I CAN however eat 6-10 whole wheat crackers, so I am using that as my "bread". I think I am going to just have to do my best to do a mostly keto"ish" diet. I also just ordered cheese crisps to substitute crackers and add a little protein in their place. Not sure how I will like those yet. Ordered a variety so maybe I can find something tasty. Pre-packaged food: I am going to do my best to avoid all processed pre-packaged food. It usually isn't very healthy for you. But, if I do need something quick and easy I am not opposed to using them occasionally. But instead of frozen meals, I will try to get some fresher versions from local delis. Haven't tried the bariatric site meals, but I did buy some bariatric soups for after surgery. -

I was given samples of different vitamins to try from my surgeon and the bari melts were awful the bariatric advantage were good, fusion was good lil bit of after taste but the ones I found the best which I order 3 months supply from celebratevitamins.com I have my mutli, calcium, iron and b12 which are all chewable and taste good( they come in different flavors) Good luck on vitamin hunting I hope I have been helpful

August 16th was my first visit to my Bariatric doctor. Went well and discussed three different options, but wanted to cry when I saw what I weighed. I knew I was over 300 lbs, but didn't realize how much over. I chose to do the Roux-en-y surgery but I have 3 more visits pre-op and then once the insurance gives the go ahead I'll be in surgery by the 2nd week of December. So far, I've had people tell me I'm nuts to do it before Christmas. All I tell them is I'm so ready for this journey. I'll be 50 on the 25th of September. I'm ready for my 50's to be the best years of my life. My Dr office has given me a list of the protein shakes, liquids, and other items to have prior to surgery. They're suggesting Premiere Protein Shakes. I just wanted to see what everyone else has used. I'm trying to be proactive and see what's best before I start the liquid before surgery. Thank you! Hi all I had a VSG on 12th August and then developed a volvulus which they tried to fix endoscopically but it failed then ended up being given a bypass on the 21st. So I hadn't read as much about the bypass and all it involves because I had no idea I was going to end up with one The Bariatric nurse rang today and said I need to be on 80g protein a day instead of 60g as with the sleeve. So, my issue is that the protein shakes (slim fast etc) are making me feel really unwell an hour or so after having them and I am guessing it is the high carb count in them even though they are sugar-free. So I am trying to avoid them. Also Vomiting... WHERE HAS IT GONE!? Vomiting is pretty much just a burp and a tiny amount of bile!? I have whey Isolate unflavoured, which I am making up my protein milk with (and some dried skim milk powder) and adding it to some of my drinks too. I will go and read through this forum re: food etc but is anyone making their own fresh soup, adding protein and straining? Cheers

Thank you all Obviously tummy was tender but the bruising really does look worse than it felt My Bariatric nurse rang me today and informed me because my sleeve turned into a bypass the following week I have to 80g protein a day rather than the 60g. So I have my beef bone broth, tomato/chicken soup and fluids that I can add my protein powder to. I have noticed if I drink the pre-made protein shakes I feel really sick and horrible an hour or so later, I am guessing the carbs are too high and causing dumping syndrome....sigh Also, because my pain meds for my back were all messed up for the 2 weeks I was in hospital I was in agony with my back by week 2. Anyway 2 days ago I started having little back spasms and overnight they went crazy, had to get the Dr out to my home at 5am and am now on diazepam for 3-4 days until the spasms stop. I guess my back is not happy with being neglected lol I also better start reading some of the Bypass forum now instead of the sleeve forum, and people wonder why I am permanently confused

I'm a Kaiser patient also, September 17th makes a year since I started this process. My GP referred me to the Bariatric program and I was offended, embarrassed, sad, relieved (I was finally going to get real answers and help), I was tired of fighting obesity without having the proper education to understand why I'm obese, I felt judged, I judged myself, I cried and then I got into action. Obesity is a complex disease, everyone doesn't have an issue of getting up from the table or overeating and some of us do. We all have our own struggles and pathes that have brought us here, the person inside of you has brought you here to this victory, do you chose to be victorious? Having the surgery is like the Matrix, red or blue pill? Be Neo, be the one who kicks obesity in the a**!!!! FEAR = Face Everything And Rise or Fear Everything And Run... I believe you've got this and you have support on this site, it helps me... I'm tired of being unhealthy due to something that now has a solution. -

Hi all. I’ve been reading the posts for a couple weeks now and too scared to post. But decided to just get over it and reach out for some advice and help. My surgery is scheduled for October 14, 2019, after a full year of being in the Kaiser program. I am getting the bypass as the only option from Kaiser. I am currently 257 and started at 265. I was in a bariatric program before, made it to then end, and then they told me they missed an initial step of verifying my insurance and found my BMI was not high enough initially to qualify so I wasn’t able to get the surgery and was devastated. Since then (around 2014) I have been actively trying to get the surgery and am just now finally getting it. My mom had the surgery 12 years ago and has kept her weight off but had significant issues with iron deficiency that nearly killed her. My husband has also had the sleeve and is struggling three years post op because he has not made the changes and relies solely on the surgery. I am 27. I also have PCOS- enough of my background... My issue now is that I am getting cold feet. I guess I spent the last 5 years trying and trying to get the surgery and never really thought it was going to be reality for me. Now that it is, I am feeling scared. I’m mostly scared of the fact that I need to make the LIFELONG changes and if I could have done those on my own for all the years I’ve been trying I would have done it already. I don’t want to have a lifetime of sickness because I can’t commit to the changes I need to make to my diet to be successful. I have come a long way and am so much healthier thanks to the kaiser program but I still have issues with my diet. I’m also scared of the actual surgery and recovery. So I guess my question for you all is- if you were in my situation- which I assume many of you have been- what would you do? Do any of you regret the surgery? How has the adjustment been to the diet? Any of you had experiences of not making the changes with diet and struggle? I’d just like to hear any and all stories or feedback or advice to help me decide what to do -

Disclaimer: I am still pre-op (until Wednesday). I also know that weighing/measuring/and recording foods are going to be my biggest challenge. That said: I do believe from everything I have learned that this will be vital to my success. At least, it will be in the first several months while I retrain my body to eat the right foods in the right portions. In the simplest of explanations: By weighing and measuring your food, you can be sure accurately eat proper portions and nutrient amounts. When we "eyeball" amounts, we tend to serve ourselves more than we are supposed to eat at one time. When we do that, we are overeating. We also are more unsure of what amounts of nutrients we are eating (too many carbs, too little protein). My "small" bowl may only hold 4 ounces of food, your "small" bowl" may hold 6-8 oz of food. That is a huge difference, and can mean the difference in being successful or not with your weight loss. The goal is to get the right portion sizes with the right nutrient amounts. And in keeping portion sizes small, you are reducing the risk of stretching your stomach back. When you do that, you are more hungry and you want to eat more. I hate measuring, so right now I buy individual sized servings of anything I can. 1 serving of tuna or chicken. 1 serving of greek yogurt or v-8 juice. Or whatever foods I have been told to eat. Post-op... I know I will be eating less at each meal for a while. So, I purchased 2oz and 4oz disposable containers. I will use them to put things like my jello and yogurt into until I am up to a full serving. For tracking food, I am learning to use the Bariastic app... but there are other apps you can use. I like this one as it is pretty simple to use, and I can take a picture of UPC codes for my foods. I also bought scales for food not long ago. Another tool I bought was a bariatric portions plate/bowl. Waste of money? Maybe. But I am hoping it's plate bowl sizes and visuals will retrain me to automatically serve myself smaller portions. I have 2 bowls, 2 plates, and some smaller spoons/forks. Eventually I hope to not have to measure everything, but for the first 6 months to a year I will do my best to measure and track EVERYTHING. -

Mikey, high protein, low carb diets can cause problems for some people with kidney issues. You do not need 100gm of Protein, but good that it is not animal protein. Can you consult with a dietitian? For most people having bariatric surgery, high protein, low carb is the best choice, but a dietitian may want healthy carbs in the mix for some. There are shakes here in Canada, vegan, with a lot of greens in the shakes. Even fermented vegetables. Also.... beware of constipation! Just saying.... that fiber is important. 1000 is pretty common for pre surgical diet, I think. Best of luck. Really happy for you and GREAT attitude!!! -
Nutritionist thinks I should be eation 1000 cals a day!

I was trying to eat like a bariatric patient. She told me that she needed me to eat to lose weight, but that I needed to be up around 1500cals. Cuz I was only eating 800-900 cals at the time. She wanted my metabolism going stronger so there was more of a shock to it after the surgery. You would still lose weight at 1500 cals in a Weight Watchers style diet...especially as a dude. -
Well, I knew this would be a process on many levels starting from the inside to the outside. I’ve been researching so much I’m probably causing eye & brain strain haha! I am 100% committed to my choice, but I’m so nervous I’ll make some mistake and my insurance will deny me at last second. They’ve given me the green light, no surgery date, until I meet their requirements. I have to attend a WLM every month, but it has to be 21 days apart. The bariatric department of the Dr. I want to see sent me a packet with a letter for my regular PCP to fill out with their approval. I also have to get my PCP to send a referral for a sleep study. I can’t schedule that one without the PCP signing off on the letter saying they approve me getting the surgery. I can’t see the bariatric dr until I have my letter, sleep study scheduled, and 3 weight loss meetings completed. I know they want to make sure I’m serious about this life changing procedure, that is a lifelong change, that one must actively stay engaged in... I get it. I just don’t want the green light I’ve been given to turn to red. The other problem is my regular Dr I’ve seen for a decade now is booked out max, so I have to see a new PCP in his office that I don’t know. I realize she can refer to my usual PCP for the approval, since she doesn’t know me, I’m just so nervous now. When I first talked to my insurance it seemed like I would have to take the classes for nutrition for 6mths, but more keeps getting added. I will do what it takes, I know this is the right path for me, but I’m really scared that I’m going to unintentionally mess something up. I also looked around on here and realized there’s other things I’ll probably have to do too, but I’m not that far along yet to be requested to check those things off the list. On the bright side both my first WLM and PCP appointments are in the 2nd week of September. I guess this is a process of hurry up and do what they say, then wait for the next step... if my nerves could calm down though that would be nice. Sorry, had to get this out there. 😕😳

I had a BMI if 35. My brother had recently had the surgery, and had great success. My parents offered to PAY FOR MY SURGERY, if I would be interested. I did not and would not qualify through my insurance and my insurance doesn’t cover Bariatric surgery. My first appt. was in May. Because I was self pay, I didn’t have to jump through a ton of hoops. I met with a psychologist and had my pre-op and that was it. My surgery was July 8. I’ve lost 50 pounds and don’t regret it at all. It hasn’t been easy, not at all, but it’s been totally worth it. -

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is usually what Bariatric teams suggest. Call your email/team & ask. Also dehydration causes wicked headaches so try make sure you are properly hydrated (water and electrolyte drinks) as this *may* solve the problem Get Well Soon 💜 -
My Plastic Surgery Thread

This is why I am going with my local guy. I was referred to a "bariatric plastic surgeon" that is over two hours away. I am notorious for complications, including with former plastic surgery, and that makes me incredibly uncomfortable. (Aside from the fact he didn't return two of my calls to consult with him). When I had my breast reduction, I had a nipple graft and my nipple started FALLING OFF... and being 25 minutes from my surgeon I could get there immediately and it is great to have that convenience. Complications are considered medical, not cosmetic, and are covered by insurance. -

Hey, I can feel ya. I went to my appointment today to have my first consult with the bariatric surgeon, ands I too was denied. After all the research I have done and gone through the bariatric seminar bcuz I had to have the seminar b4 seeing the surgeon. But bcuz my BMI is not high enough or the fact that I am not a full blown diabetic, I got denied. He offered me t he ballon which is a temporar solution for 6 months, but after 6 months it has to be removed & there is a chance of me gaining my weight back. WTF! I don't wanna gain my weight back, I wanna lose it for sake . I have no willpower to lose it on my own bcuz if there is ice cream or cookies around ( as my husbands snacks on them) it will entice me to eat it as well when I want something sweet even if there is fruit around. -

It's all so confusing. My surgeon is listed for Aetna and is covered, but the hospital he does his surgery at is not covered. It's in network but doesn't have IOQ designation. sooo..I had an upper GI performed there but I can't have a bariatric surgery there. And my surgeon won't go to any other hospital. ARGHHHHH makes no sense. -

Update- my labs are all perfect. I haven't taken vitamins in a week. I did purchase some bariatric vitamins at my doctor's office, and took one today and didn't get nauseous. My cholesterol is elevated though!!! How in the heck!

I ordered the Bariatric Pal calcium chews in the caramel flavour and they are so good. I am going to see what other ones they do, because this is really helping me to get my vitamins in where before I really struggled.
