Chest hurts when eating stuff
hmills653 replied to KKLive's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm almost 3 months and still get that. It is getting better though. I think you have to take a little, whatever is tolerable I'd say and you'll start to get used to it the more you eat it . Also, I know get full alot quicker from chicken than yogurt. Therefore I try to go slower when eating meat and anticipate that I'll need to stop eating alot sooner than with other foods. I also have that pain with drinking after eating sometimes even a good 2 hrs after I eat. I have to be careful with that first drink after eating to see how it will feel. -
Day 5 post op and feeling pretty good! Able to sleep on my right side for a little while and able to go from laying to standing using a support pillow with no pain! Still looking forward to moving on to phase 2 in a week, so sick of just protein shakes and plain yogurt.

When does the light shine
MakingChanges74 replied to QueenTiff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hang in there. It does get better. I am almost 8 weeks and I noticed that I started to feel so much better once I started to eat some food. Yogurt, beans, cottage cheese (since I am vegetarian) really helped a lot. I think that it is super important to find a protein drink or powder that you can tolerate. I've tried so many of them. Even the unflavored Unjury didn't agree with me. I did have good luck with using high protein milk and Unjury Chocolate Spendor and Syntrax Nectar Latte Cappuccino. Also using sugar free syrups to alter the shake flavors helped me. Now that I have a system down that I can tolerate, I have been feeling much better. I feel better than I did before surgery. -

Reaction to my whey powder? Best other protein?
BunnyJean replied to GotProlactinoma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I need to jump on this thread. Because I was going to post something about being lactose intolerant. I am. So for a very long time (years), I have not been able to tolerate milk products. I actually use Rice milk instead of Almond because it has no flavor for cooking etc. I can tolerate MUSCLE MILK. The Pro ones seem to bloat me, but the regular Muscle Milk is fine with me and I actually really really like it. I love the Vanilla Cream. That has 130 cals, 0 sugar and 20 grams protein per premixed shake box. Muscle Milk has whey isolate protein. Which is more easily tolerated if you have lactose issues. I'm lucky that I can tolerate it. So try that maybe? I have also tried pea protein, hemp etc. for years. Sometimes I just gag them down. Till I found one that I really like but wonder if the protein, because it's all plant based, is as useful as the whey. I use powdered RAW FIT by Garden of Life. Vegan, dairy free, gluten free, soy free. One scoop has 160 cals, 1 sugar, 28 grams protein. My typical breakfast for so many years has been 2% greek yogurt (I can tolerate Fage greek yogurt) with a scoop of Marley Coffee flavor Raw Fit (YUM YUM!). I mix the powdered raw fit with just a couple tablespoons of water then add the greek yogurt. Otherwise you really have a hard time stirring it, so thick! I don't mind the bit of gritty left, actually. I imagine if you left the raw fit to sit mixed a bit, the gritty may go away. I never tried it though. The greek yogurt and scoop raw fit is a whopping 48 grams protein. YES it's too much to eat at once when I am sleeved. but even half is 24 grams. Good for soft stage, puree stage. BUT......is the plant and seed based protein as beneficial for your body after sleeve as the whey or whey isolate is? I understand totally the need for protein. I have had hair loss for 3 years due to menopause and Estrogen Dominance. I need my protein to work for me to try to mitigate the effects of WLS on my body and slim head of hair! Was wondering if anyone knows the answer about the whey vs plant based. Thanks so much!!! -
Buyers regret
Lmichelle310 replied to Lmichelle310's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm happy to know I'm not the only one feeling this way. It's just making so scared cause I know I'm not getting the protein I need. I just bought some Greek yogurt and it made me so sick because I've become lactose intolerant. I'm over the craving food part I know how to control that being that I never feel hungry now. I'm just tired of feeling sick. -

4ounces by weight or volume ?
jess9395 replied to dreamingsmall's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Depends on the food. With a chicken breast I go by weight, yogurt by volume. -
I have basically been hungry since day 2 after surgery. I am 9 days post op and have started getting shaky and light headed, kind of a hypoglycemic feeling. I am getting in my protein and water and have set a timer to remind me to eat every 3 hours. I handle liquids, yogurt and some mushy foods with no issues. I will stop when I feel at little pain at the bottom of my stomach. That might be my "full" but I can't say for certain. Since I am unsure about being full I am portioning out 1/4 to 1/2 cup per meal (depending on consistency). This might sound stupid but I'm not sure what my body is telling me I need. I know when I would feel like this pre-sleeve I would eat everything I could to make the feeling go away and was rarely successful. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I feel the same way sometimes. I'm only 9 days post op but I feel regret at times because of the issues I've been having with my stomach. I don't know if it's hunger pains or just acid and I'm barley eating anything. I mainly eat Greek yogurt, water, g2 and vitamin water zero the protein shakes make me sick and broth just doesn't do it anymore so I feel stuck and alone at times. How I get out of the funk look for forums like this. I'm glad you posted it because today is one of those days for me too.

How do I know when I'm full!?
Sassy Sleeve replied to Supernovae's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think this is really challenging sometimes. I am 9 days out. Just yesterday, I got to advance from clear liquids only - to full liquids and protein drinks. Included in that is cream of wheat cereal (as long as it is runny), cream soups (strained for any chunks), and greek yogurt with no fruit chunks. At the end of my 8 days of clear liquids, I felt hungry frequently. I could quell it with some broth, but it did not feel satisfying! Being able to feel like I am "eating" again is great. But, my weight bumped up overnight 1.2lbs - I am guessing/hoping it is because what I can eat has a higher sodium level and because it takes longer to digest the new additions. Today, I went back to measuring and recording everything. As of right now I am only at 446 calories. According to my plan, I am supposed to have some a protein beverage in a couple of hours - so I will top out under 600 calories for the day. That is about where I was during the liquid protein pre-op diet. I feel full, but I also feel like I am eating a lot. However, none of the food is solid. So, what would be slider foods in the future? I also think I am probably eating too fast - so I need to refocus on that. I do have a lot more energy than I did when I was only eating clear liquids! I do feel hungry, and the usual triggers cue hunger (food smells from other people making food in the house). I am satisfied with a small amount of food, so my guess is that everything is OK? I did think that I would not feel "hungry" at this point - and that is not the case for me. -
Coming up to soft mushy phase
linziyo replied to QueenTiff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You'll still have to supplement with shakes right now. Try mashed beans, yogurt, soft scrambled eggs, ricotta or cottage cheese to add in some extra protein with real food. Depending on your plan, you might be able to do some braised meat or deli meat too. Pinterest has alot of great ideas if you search bariatric soft foods! -
It's been 7 weeks since surgery and I still cant eat lots of stuff. Like chicken and hamburger. I can eat cheese, yogurts and Protein shakes. If I try to eat any kind of solids like chicken or meats , I get that hurting feeling at the top of my stomach below the chest!! I knew this was going to be hard , but it hurts to eat .

Reaction to my whey powder? Best other protein?
GotProlactinoma replied to GotProlactinoma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I so appreciate your insight! I'm one month out now. I was just wondering why milk and kefir have so many carbs. And I do wonder if some of the kefir carbs don't count because it's fermented. Somewhere I learned that fermented foods, the carbs are less because they were used for the bacteria... i cant tolerate cottage cheese. It has something in it that triggers migraines, maybe the carrageenan? But I am getting good use of the Greek yogurt too. i still have whey protein powder every day even if I react a little to it because I just need protein that is very dense so I don't need too much quantity. glad you lost 30 lbs the first two months, me only 8 lbs the first month. It will be slow for me. -

Help!! Food demons and I'm barely 2 weeks post op!!
Allie589 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Last night I took my kids to a birthday party. The spread she had was insane-make your own sandwiches and tons of amazing salads and fruit, dips and veggies and then she has 10 pizzas delivered and the good kind too, no cardboard delivery, the uber delicious kind. I'll be two weeks on Monday, haven't even graduated to purees yet and the only reason I didn't take a bite of something is because I physically can't because of healing. I left the party. I couldn't take it. Am I hungry? Possibly bc I'm living on liquids. I went home, had my fat free Greek yogurt with monk fruit sweetener and was absolutely full, couldn't even finish the yogurt. I am freaking out bc what happens when I am all healed and can take a bite? Will I be satisfied if I have a piece of cheese and a couple veggies at a party like this? Omg-it was so bad last night and I am terrified I am going to fail. Any words of wisdom? I think I'm going to pursue hypnotherapy. 5'7 HW: 256 SW: 248 CW: ? GW: 150 Fantasy GW: 135 Sleeved 8/7 -
My surgery is on the 28th! I am in the middle of my 2 week liquid diet, all I do right now is crave food. My shakes and allowable foods are so sickingly sweet. I actually put salt and pepper in the one plain yogurt I am allowed a day. It's getting easier day by day. i can't wait to have the surgery. It has been a loooooooong wait!

Today is my 4th day post op. Feeling ok. Walking around a bit and only managing some yogurt or fat free sugar free pudding. Will try a no fat cream soup today. Still get sharp pains once in a while which I attribute to the gas. Tired and napping here and there, but definitely have some energy. Incisions are a little sore but not problematic. I do struggle with getting enough water. Am trying, but not hitting 64oz a day. Need to work on that Good luck to everyone 👍🏻

Any August 2017 Sleevers?
SpindleCity replied to Jessalene's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery in Massachusetts on Tuesday, 8/15, so am 4 days post op. I am doing great with my protocol's Stage III diet (shakes, yogurt, applesauce, broth, jello), but surprised to still be needing the strong pain medications. I have always had a very high pain tolerance compared to most folks, so I wasn't expecting to still be having surges of 7/8/9 on the pain scale at this point if I skip a dose. In neutral positions (lying flat, sitting reclined, standing) I am basically pain free, but any shifting or anything that uses my stomach muscles is excruciating at the two largest incision sites if I haven't taken the meds. Well, I guess that's why they were prescribed, right? And today is better than yesterday, etc. Looking forward to hanging out with all of you on this journey. Our local support group meets once a month, and every three months I will have a work conflict, so I am grateful to find this place and other voices to connect with. -
Reaction to my whey powder? Best other protein?
Berry78 replied to GotProlactinoma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Absolutely not true. I haven't had protein powder since trying it those first couple weeks postop (and trying it one more time 3 months post). My protein goal is 70g and I always get at least 65g. Blended tuna salad was actually good after all the milk and broth. I only had it a couple times since I preferred greek yogurt and cottage cheese..fewer dishes to wash! Lol! The sugar in the kefir IS a trade off. It'll knock you out of ketosis, but that kefir really will help you meet those protein goals. You don't have to be in ketosis to lose weight. Remember, the liquid diet isn't forever. Once you move to solids you can always go back onto a keto diet if you want. To me, those first two months are about healing, not weight loss, so I did what I had to to support that healing (i.e. meeting goals). And even with that outlook, I lost 30lbs the first 2 months. -
Can sugar substitutes be avoided?
Allie589 replied to gotime0810's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've been having such bathroom issues post surgery and I think it's from all of the artificial sweeteners in these protein water/zero calorie/zero carb drinks. When I was on my diet roller coaster I always hated how weight watchers pushed diet sodas and sugar free stuff. I purchased some granulated monk fruit sweetener for post op to add to my plain Greek yogurt and I seem to tolerate it well. Someone in my bariatric support group told me that she totally tollerates maple syrup and honey-never had a dumping episode with either. I cannot wait to be healed enough to get rid of the artificial stuff in these protein waters. For now I need the liquid and protein so I'm going to hang on for a little longer, but like you, I've avoided them for so long and definitely feel they're sending me into bathroom fits. -
Of course! 8oz ricotta 1/2 cup cheese-- I used cheddar jack 1 large egg, beaten 1/4 cup fat free Greek yogurt 1/2 small can diced green chilies (mild) Salt and pepper to taste 1/2 cup shredded cheddar jack Lightly beat egg, add to all ingredients (except cheese for topping), mix well. Divide evenly into mini muffin tins. Top with remaining cheese. Bake at 450 for 20 mins. Serve topped with a dollop of ff Greek yogurt. I did not find chiles too spicy or upsetting in any way--everyone is different I'm sure. I did freak out a little with the skins on the green chiles, but they really are already so mushy. This recipe was very much based on Eggface's recipe, which I also enjoy: http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html?m=1 Though I used a sweet potato tomato sauce instead of marinara because I thought something less acidic would be a good idea (plus I just really enjoy the sauce): http://nataliaskitchen.net/sweet_potato_sauce/ Let me know how you like it!

New here, but 6 months out
monalyssa33 replied to monalyssa33's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My daily eating is varied. I eat a lot of Greek yogurt, peanut butter, cheese, frozen meals (which I'm usually never able to finish and what is left is almost always is the pasta or rice portion), I make mini pizzas with high fiber flatbreads that I get from Aldi. I also make these Fiber One haystack cookies that I have every night because they help keep me regular. They are just basically a bag of chocolate chips melted with a scoop of peanut butter, then I add a scoop of protein powder and stir in a packet of Fiber One cereal. I put it on a plate and freeze it. They are actually surprisingly good and I look forward to them. -
