    Vegetarians?

I am not banded yet, but am doing some research while jumping through insurance hoops. I am a vegetarian and just wondering what it has been like for banded vegetarians. Is Protein an issue? What about eating the veggie meats and tofu? Has it been a good experience? Any input helps.... Thanks,
  2. Only going to count the ones I gave a serious chance to - Dexatrim - 15 lbs in junior high Jenny Craig - have a lifetime membership (you know, the $350+ deal?) lost 30 lbs on that - who can afford their food? A program through my Doctor called limit the whites, leave a bite - lost about 25 lbs Weight Watchers seriously x2 - once getting to goal lost 75 lbs, (yes I made lifetime and I WILL be using my free meetings when I get back there) and then during my 6 month medically supervised weight loss period before sleeve and lost 21 lbs. A million times where it lasted a few weeks. I half way tried atkins, south beach, tried to be vegetarian (if that isn't code for CARBS ), tried exercise alone at least 2x, really don't lose much when you go to dinner with your exercise buddy when you are done

    Post Op Eating

SF jello pudding; homemade SF custard feels very warm and soothing on a new pouch. Yogurt, cottage cheese (small curd)....mix a little SF jelly in it; refried beans (vegetarian) ricotta cheese (mix a little spaghetti sauce in it to make it tasty); well-cooked cauliflower (mash it up).

I am 5 1/2 months post op and I'm wanting to change my diet to a plant strong diet. Is anyone having success doing this?

    Thirtysomething's

Hi 30 somethings. I'm Julie, from Alabama but living in Yankee-land (NYC), as my family calls it. I'm a lawyer, single (except for a recurring relationship that springs anew every few months), 33 years old, no children (yet). I was banded in April by Dr. Fielding at NYU. I'm down 33 lbs to date and glad to finally have what I hope will be a good fill. I get to the gym pretty often and meet with a trainer a couple of times a week to make sure I go. My pre-band downfalls were ordering food instead of preparing healthy things. Mexican food is the enimy! Lastly, I'm vegetarian, if anyone is interested in sharing veggie ideas, particularly getting in enough Protein.

    Solids Stage Recipes

Tasty Quiche recipe my daughter got from somewhere (I'd tip the hat but she doesn't remember who or where it was posted to originally). Anyway she & her husband have been banded for about a year and make this into 4 servings for 2 meals. It freezes well once cooked for use within a month (it doesn't stay in the freezer that long though ) CRUSTLESS SPINACH–MUSHROOM QUICHE Sodium Per Serving – 112mg Serves 6 as an entrée, 8 as a side dish This recipe was given to me by a vegetarian friend. It is so good and no one will ever know it contains tofu . . . unless you tell them! Optional - I add 2 level tablespoons of Oscar Mayer real bacon bits but it does increase the quoted fat and salt levels a bit. 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (This is also know as sweet butter) ½ sweet onion, diced 2 shallots, chopped 4 ounces mushrooms, chopped (about 1½ cups) 1 garlic clove, minced ¼ teaspoon dried basil ¼ teaspoon garlic or onion powder ¼ teaspoon dried tarragon ¼ teaspoon dried thyme 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 4 eggs, beaten, or ¾ cup egg substitute 8 ounces firm tofu ½ cup lowfat ricotta cheese 2 ounces no-salt-added Swiss cheese, shredded (about ½ cup) They used low fat slices diced into small bits. ¼ cup lowfat milk 1 (10-ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and moisture squeezed out teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg (1/2 tsp dry ground spice may be substituted but flavor is not as intense) Preheat oven to 350oF (180oC). Coat a 9-inch quiche or pie dish with nonstick cooking spray. Heat oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat; add onions, shallots and mushrooms. Cook, stirring frequently, until onions are translucent, 3 to 4 minutes; add garlic, basil garlic powder, tarragon, thyme, and pepper. Cook, stirring constantly, until you smell the garlic, 1 to 2 minutes; remove from heat and let cool slightly. Mix together the eggs, tofu, ricotta, Swiss cheese, milk, and spinach; add to onion mixture. Pour into prepared quiche dish and sprinkle with nutmeg. Bake in a preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until custard has set and top is lightly browned. Cool for 10 minutes, then cut into wedges and serve. 4th of July - WHAT WILL YOU WEIGH???

If I can make it to my next week goal of 249....yikes, that would be so amazing. I have been trying to lose weight for so long and have not been able to get passed 250 since 2004. I weighed about 250 in high school I think...I know the year after I weighed that and I don't think I gained that much after graduating. I ballooned up to 300 while in a bad relationship and couldn't lose it. I got down to 235 using Atkins but that didn't stick. Once I had my gall bladder taken out, eating a high protein diet like I had (not so much on the high fat like most did) was no longer an option. I am a vegetarian now and have been for over five years. I love it, though I have been craving (in my head) some meat stuff...but I think that is more of a result of the 20 days of a liquid diet followed by mushy foods, etc. You all know what I mean. 249 would be so excellent to see on that scale. I think I'll have to buy that necklace I've been oogling on ebay if I get there. I will need something awesome.

    Can't tolerate protein supplements.

I use Ensure Max on ice. It doesn't taste great but if I drink 2 per day I get all my protein. As I'm only 30 days out I can't eat my protein at 1/3 cup of food. Ice seems to make it taste better. I've also used vegetarian protein and that seems to be better. It is hard to get 60g of protein a day. Unfortunately I don't know of any protein pill.

    Vegetarians and Vegans

I've been a vegetarian for 2 1/2 years. I'm glad to see that there are others out there in the band world! I was beginning to think I was the only one! Everyone says, "when's the last time you saw a fat vegetarian?" but in fact I was plenty fat before I became vegetarian. I actually lost about 20 pounds just by cutting meat. My nutritionist pre-op was not happy that I wasn't going to include meat in my post-op diet. I just told her that I had no intention of changing that part of me and that she would just have to be creative and figure out a meal plan where I got enough Protein. I eat a lot of meat substitutes (boca, morningstar, tofu, gardein) and have never had a problem meeting my protein requirement. I do still drink organic milk and eat some chesse. I will eat things that are made with eggs, but I don't eat eggs by themselves. I would love to turn completely vegan one day. It would be great to hear any new resources you may have. I'm always looking for new recipes.

    Vegetarians and Vegans

Thank you Susan. I would be very curious why a Dr would suggest not being vegetarian after WLS, it's so easy to be vegetarian these days. And you can get more than enough Protein, which is usually the concern. I was a body builder and regularly got 100-120 g per day, only supplemented with a single protien drink after my workouts (40 g) three days a week. Once you know everything has protein, including fruits and vegetables, it's easier to get those numbers up. Tools like The Daily Plate help as well as they track it for you and you can enter on the go. I regularly eat ground soy (tacos, shepherds pie, Macaroni/tomato/fake beef, ground turkey patties), stuffed chick'n breasts from Trader Joe's, chick'n patties for a high protein snack, veggie hot dogs, burgers, seasoned and fried tofu (5 lbs of tofu only uses a total of 2-3 tbsp of oil)**, etc. And that doesn't even include Beans, which are great mixed with pretty much anything. It's just so easy not to eat meat these days but still get all of your nutritional needs met. ** I'll post the recipe if anyone is interested in it, it was inspired by the tofu preparation at the Los Angeles Athletic Club, the tofu can be frozen, thawed, and microwaved and added to anything for protein.

    Vegetarians and Vegans

Hi Kamie and vegan friends!! I love finding more people veg oriented here, i had my vsg a month ago, at the same time, Im starting my compassionate vegan journey im have been a vegetarian for a lot of time but after watching the documentary Earthling, and reading and watching dr. Garth Davis wanted to start my new life with this little stomach and less food anxiety as a vegan , has been wonderful, practically no side-effects, no vomits, no nausea, no diarrhea, or dehydration etc... I think respecting other beings life is a beautiful way to cohabit this world, and politically speaking also the way to go.. But im writing in this forum in order to see if there is another vegan available to share their food dairy and progress with me? I´ve been logging my food in cronometer because provides me with specific nutrient information. if someone is interested in that please write me a personal message hugs!! and tons of great vibes for all!!

    Vegetarians and Vegans

So excited to find this thread!). I've been a vegetarian for the past 17 years. My nutritionist is excited to work with me since she said I'm her first vegetarian bander. I was surprised that I am her first since she has been working with band patients for 10 years.

    Vegans?

I am vegan and getting sleeved (hopefully) this summer. My doctor and nutritionist tell me it is do-able, but difficult. The issue is that in order to get the protein you need, you usually get too many carbs (tofu is like this) which can slow your weight loss. Most vegan protein shakes have the same problem. I am working closely with the nutritionist, but it is possible I may need to go vegetarian during the weight loss phase and back to vegan during "maintenance". I REALLY hope that isn't the case, but my health has to come first and I must lose this weight! -Lauren
  14. While I appreciate your "links" to all these horrible cancer related posts, I find it overkill. We are all adults here and hopefully wise enough to conduct our own research to know what side effects could come about. Honestly, if you were to read every medical journal out there, you would find a link to cancer with everything we put into our bodies. So, thank you for these posts, but allow us to conduct our own research. For myself, I have / do conduct my own research before I change my lifestyle. And the truth is - your diet doesn't need to be all Vegetarian or Vegan to prevent cancer.
  15. Protein is really important. I am sure that as a vegetarian it is still possible to get that much protein.

    Weight Watchers Online: Support Thread

I think this would be a good idea. I tried weight watchers meetings. But, between college, work and the hubs time was just hard to make. It became a stressor trying to plan in a meeting. I eventually just said 'screw it.' I lost the material where is shows how to calculate your daily points allotment? Can someone post the calculation? College starts 8/18. On Tuesdays I will be at college from 10 am to 8:30 pm. On Thursdays I'll be there from 10 AM to 2:30, then onto work. I need to find healthy, lunch box friendly foods/snacks. It's a small satellite campus, so there is not a student lounge w/a microwave. Everything will have to survive the Southern heat in my car. Ice packs only last so long when the heat index outside of the car is 106* I know I could use some ideas/support. I'm a vegetarian. I will never lecture anyone for eating meat. I've meat some radical vegetarians that have told me I should divorce my hubs because he chooses to eat meat. It's like, hellloooo, get a life. Ok, it's the end of the day, I'm tired and babbeling. Looking forward to this thread

    Weight Watchers Online: Support Thread

I was born and raised in California. I left two week after high school. When I left, I realized how much I took In-n-out for granted! My hubs who grew up in Florida had never heard of them. When we went home to visit my mom, I introduced him to In-n-out. He fell in love! When he thinks of Ca, he doesn't think beaches and such, he thinks In-n-out, LOL! When my mom moved to AZ, he nearly cried at the thought of no reason to visit Ca, anymore, LOL! I visited my mom over Christmas and reported back that there was an In-n-out by her. He went from mourning to being ecstatic! In Dec, I made a drastic dietary change and became vegetarian. But, when I read your post this morning, I started drooling and craving an In-n-out double cheese w/fries. That's a dinner that is almost better than sex! To bad you couldn't send me a a burger via e-mail! I'd gladely forfeit all my weekly points and starve the rest of the day for an messy in-n-out better-than-sex (almost) meal! Oh, and don't worry about eating badly for one day. We need to learn to eat what we love, but in moderation. What's the purpose of not enjoying food?

    July 2014 :)

I've been having soft scrambled eggs- one egg and one serving egg beaters with cheese mixed in. I've had some mashed potatoes, tuna fish and some crab cake. I'm vegetarian so I've mixed some refried beans, hummus and salsa for lunch. I'm staying full and my strength is starting to grow. I'm looking for some more options to start adding. I'm getting about 850 calories a day. I hope I'm doing the right thing. My Dr has monthly meetings at his office with a nutritionist. I'm def going to take advantage of those!

    What can I eat?

Are you allowed to eat nuts and nut butters? Edamame? You could make vegetarian chili with lots of beans for protein/fiber. Tofu curry.

    Please chime in...

I'm 7 weeks out as well. I do what I did pre-surgery. In the car I keep larabars, and either almond/cashews or pistachios. I always carry a bottle of Water. Processed food doesn't always sit well with me because I have multiple food allergies & I'm vegetarian. If I am pushed I will get a egg crossaint at Dunkin Donuts. I toss the bread and eat the egg. My other option is a veggie burger from Burger King no ketchup/mayo and again I toss the bun. At the support group one woman says she had a small mini cooler she keeps in her car. I think I may adopt this practice as well. This way I can carry more safe foods with me and not run the risk of being tempted by fast food .

    Weight Loss Surgery Success Habits

If you don't eat animal Protein, then substitute the protein of your choice. If you are vegan or vegetarian you are should already be used to this. It didn't say protein, it just kept saying specifically animal protein and animal meat. I don't think specifically saying animal protein for a universal post is helpful to those of us that have read things like the China study. Sent from my SM-G930T using the BariatricPal App
  22. Sorry, that was for @Creekimp13, not sure how your name got "quoted" - very weird, but my pc and phone have been acting up.... apologies to you. I didn't say or imply anyone was a vegetarian / vegan, just stated that being one wouldn't prevent cancer either.
  23. I'm vegetarian too. The number I was told was at least 65g of protein - which still seems like a lot. This last week I have been able to get over 100g consistently by pumping up my morning shake (I continue to do a protein shake for breakfast because I am not a breakfast person, and have been doing this for years). I use Fairlife milk which has more protein instead of regular skim, a scoop of my protein powder, and add a scoop of Genepro flavourless powder as well. That shake is really filling, and has a tonne of protein. It sets me up for the rest of the day. Anything I can, I add the Genepro to - Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, oatmeal, my bariatricpal chili and curry. The scoops are very small and it dissovles easily if you stir slowly. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K6OSDYA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 My nutritionist also said that it gets easier the further out you get and you don't need these massive amounts of protein forever. You will be able to tweak your macros as you get to maintenance to what works for you.
  24. I have so many of these stories, I don't even know where to start. haha. When I was about 20, my grandma decided she wanted to buy clothes for me and my cousin for Christmas AND that meant she had to measure us. I was dreading it. My cousin was probably about a size 3 at the time. I was about a size 18/20. After she finished measuring me, she said "Well for someone who is as big as a cow, you have good measurements since there is 10 inches between your waist and hips." Right in front of my skinny cousin. Niiiiicccceeee. Then again my grandma isn't known for her tact, therefore she knows nothing of me being banded. A couple of years ago I had to have an ingrown toenail removed and so went to see the podiatrist. He asked me if I'd ever been any smaller than I was (size 24 at the time) and I said yes I'd been much smaller at one time. He said "Wow you must have really been a knockout. Such a shame. You have a pretty face. You should try to get small again." WTF?? He was supposed to be looking at my TOE!! What the heck did how I look have anything to do with it? Geez. I had a (now ex) best friend who was obsessed with talking about people's weight and how HUGE they were and I'd see them and they were smaller than me. Gee thanks. I found out from another friend that she'd said behind my back that I'd just given up and let myself go and didn't care what I looked like any more. That really hurt. I was a vegetarian for several years and when I was in high school I once had a guy ask me how I could be a vegetarian and still be so fat. I was only 165 lbs at the time anyway but I pointed out to him that vegetarians do eat more than just bean sprouts and carrots.
