    Let’s talk protein

I’ve been a vegetarian for 20+ years and have started the pre-op diet. Getting my protein in has been very hard. I’m drinking shakeology which I know Is vegan. I will eat eggs/seafood too. Do you have suggestions for protein options?

    Do you find it hard?

Don't feel bad monkeyol....My diet has been carb heavy for some time...It still is to some extent. I've done the low carb thing several times before, and can't be successful long term eating that way. I prefer a vegetarian-ish diet if you will. I only eat enough meat to get my protein in, focusing mostly on fish. I still eat veggies, ancient grains and fruit. Carbs aren't bad for you.....Bad carbs are bad for you, just as bad fats are bad for you. Most of the world lives almost exclusively on carbs for nutrition, and are not fat. They don't eat Frosted Flakes, potato chips, pasta, french fries, candy and other sugars though, Their food supply is minimally processed. If you would like to incorporate carbs into your diet, then opt for healthier, minimally processed carbs, and add them back slowly so that you can see how your body reacts to them. Don't feel that you have to eat that way forever, though. You definitely have choices, and must find which way works best for you for in long term. Good luck.

    Beans and cheese

There isn't as much protein in beans and cheese as you'd think (well compared to animal proteins). I am a vegetarian so I eat it pretty regularly. You also might want to watch the carbs as beans can be high in carbs (if your doctor has a carb limit). I use vegetarian, fat free beans with low fat cheese. I also add a Tbsp of salsa and a 100 calorie guac pack now that I am several months out. It makes a very filling lunch. I was dreaming of refried beans after my surgery. I couldn't wait and wanted it to be my first real food. I was all set and ready but then I had an apt with my doctor and it turns out that I had read my paperwork wrong and I wasnt going to be able to have beans for 3-4 more weeks (my doctor had pretty strict post op diet rules). I waited and was in heaven when I was finally able to eat them. I also do sides of refried beans and guac when we go out to dinner.

    Issues with certain foods

I'm almost vegetarian. I had my surgery August 8 and when I !could eat whatever, meat went down fine. Now the smell really bothers me. I can certain things (one egg, sometimes, or a slice of bacon.) I eat a lot of smoothies, tofu and other things to get my nutrients. I do love all veggies so this really isn't an issue for me
  5. Hello guys, so I had surgery September 1 2017. I am currently under no food restrictions other than eating slow and no drinking while eating. I've noticed as I've introduced certain foods back that some really cause issues for me like all dairy products and occasionally meat. I was wondering if any one else has had similar diet issues and what they are doing/ is anyone vegan or vegetarian after surgery and is it helping? My fear is getting enough nutrients and food for fuel during the day. Thanks in advance for the help!
  6. I had my pre-op class today and we talked a lot about protein. Problem is, they push whey protein because it absorbs better, but I’m prone to kidney stones and a vegetarian so whey isn’t an option for me. The dietician is going to do some research for me, but does anyone know of a good vegan protein that actually tastes good?

  9. I am 38 had my surgery 4 years ago. Before surgery I lost 63 lbs, after 45, and now I'm stuck. I cannot lose for the life of me I was running a 5k 4x a week last summer and lost nothing. I am now diabetic after keeping my numbers below for 9 years. I am at a loss. I am in the middle of preparing to cut all white food, sugar and possibly go vegetarian. I am kinda sad I have to go to that extreme. I am tracking my food, carbs and sugar. I don't know what else to do...

    Calling all October sleevers!!

This Liquid Diet is just knocking off the pounds. I haven't even been on it a full week and I lost 12 more pounds, I went in today for the blood work and I was in shock. Makes me optimistic about the weight loss post surgery lol. It's been hard though. Food has been on my mind ALL day. I just want MEAT. I don't know how vegetarians do it.
  13. I was supposed to share my dinner last night, but I totally forgot to get my husband (who made it) to take a pic of it for me first. Anyway, it's weeknight enchiladas (vegetarian) with avocado and cilantro to garnish. Here's the recipe: https://www.budgetbytes.com/2016/01/weeknight-enchiladas/
  14. I wish I'd taken a picture for you guys! @Apple1 and @Newme17. I just made the most delicious lunch that is a riff on Eggface's Ricotta Bake--only I gak over the texture of ricotta, so I used low fat cottage cheese (Daisy brand). We grew up eating cottage cheese in lasagna because we were poor and very white bread and it's what Mama thought was 70s era authentic. LOL. To this day I lasagna made with cottage cheese! I had some leftover dry sauteed mushrooms and super greens trio and leftover yellow squash/zucchini along with an open jar of Central Market Taste of Italy Marinara (no added sugar, super low carb, 5g carbs 2g fiber per 1/2 cup). So I made quick lasagna. I don't know how you would alter it to be vegan. But it's awesome as lacto-ovo vegetarian! Quick Lasagna Bowl 113 g, 2% Cottage Cheese 1 large, Egg 1 cup, Roasted Yellow Squash 0.50 ounce, Onion 1 clove, Garlic, raw 2 ounce, Mushrooms 2 fluid ounce, Super Greens Trio 0.12 Tbl. chopped, Fresh Basil Leaves 0.12 tsp, Oregano Leaves 1 tbsp, Cheese - Parmesan, shredded 0.50 oz, Cheese - Mozzarella, part skim milk 0.25 cup (120g), Marinara, Taste of Italy (RG) 1 tsp(s), Cheese - Parmesan, shredded Combine the cottage cheese with the egg, leftover cooked squash, onion and garlic. Add dried basil, oregano, and 1 tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese. Stir to combine. Cover bowl with a glass plate and nuke in 1 minute intervals, stirring between each addition, until egg is mostly done. Add leftover cooked mushrooms and greens. Stir to combine. Top with Marinara and mozzarella cheese. Cover and nuke until melted (about 1 additional minute). Sprinkle with the last tsp of Parmesan cheese and some cracked red pepper if desired. Enjoy! Pre-WLS this makes 1-2 servings. Post WLS, this would likely make 4 meals (once you can eat cooked veggies again). 1 serving: 359 cals, 30g protein, 18g fat, 20g carbs, 5g fiber, 15g net carbs It's so good you don't notice the lack of pasta or meat.

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

This is a quote by the same guy in the video I posted who is a RD working with Dr. McDougall. I like the way he explains things. Right now we are all bombarded with every kind of vegan or plant-based diet in the world. How would you capsulize Jeff Novick’s diet? I have really been thinking about that lately and how best to describe the principles of a healthy diet, and I think, plant-centered, minimally processed, calorie dilute, low SOS really sums it up. It’s not just vegan, vegetarian or plant-based because one could have a pretty bad vegan, vegetarian or plant-based diet. So I like to say “plant- centered” but I also add that it should be minimally processed. I don’t say “whole” or “unprocessed” as not all processing is bad. Processing per se isn’t what’s hurtful, it’s processing that either detracts from the value of the food (i.e., refining) or adds something that is potentially harmful, (i.e., salt, sugar, etc.). So plant-centered, minimally processed, and then calorie dilute, because so much food has become so calorie dense which is a major contributing factor for obesity and many other diseases. The fourth principle is a diet low in SOS, which is salt, oil/fat and sugar. Even if you have a plant-centered, minimally processed, calorie-dilute diet and you cover it with salt, sugar, and oil, it is not healthy. I’m not going to say none, but low, as it isn’t all or nothing.
  16. This is the quick meal I came up with. I had to use what I had available. I made some whole wheat pasta, and cooked up some onions, red bell pepper, yellow squash, and some Roma tomatoes. I put some alfredo sauace on it all and it was pretty good for a last minute thrown together dinner lol it wasn't vegan, but it was vegetarian.

    Reaction to undercooked protein

The simplest answer is to always cook things well, and when at a place that you can't control it, order vegetarian. Good luck!

You should try Quorn products. Soy free and gluten free vegetarian sources of protein. They are mushroom based protein - but they don't taste like mushrooms I swear! The Turk'y roast is my favorite - beats a tofurkey any day. I even got my meat eating father to eat it more than once. The Turk'y roast has 100 calories, 13 gr protein and 0.5 gr sugar per serving. And the serving is larger than you would think.

I think it's a matter of preference. I tend to go by Whole Foods plant based. Vegan can have a lot of other things than just veggies and fruits, as long as there are no animal products used, which can be a whole lot of junky processed foods as well. There are Healthy vegans though. If I had to label my lifestyle it'll have to vegetarian currently, because I do have an egg or some cheese every now and then; but it's probably 90% plant based. But I am not all that big on labels, so I say I eat a WFPB diet if the subject of diet comes up.

Were you eating a lot of dairy, eggs, and cheese? Were you also still using vegetable oils for cooking? I am curious because many vegetarians still eat these things and miss out on the low fat benefits of a WFPB diet.

Lol NewMe I am a vegetarian and had the sleeve in 2015. I was just tested and showed my good cholesterol was low and my bad cholesterol was high. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. Thank you so much for sharing! I have a feeling I may decide to be vegetarian if not pescatarian, when I am allowed to go to "soft diet" & regular. I did do veggie days some before surgery, and know that I'll be SO much healthier if I stick with it. Our church is very supportive in eating healthy/vegan. Vegetarian diet anyone?

I haven't been sleeved yet, but I used to be a vegan and plan on returning to it. For the first couple of months or first year i will probably be peco vegetarian. Vegetarian and vegan products have really bombarded the market. Vega has some great 20 gram protein shakes. There's a vegan protein weight loss shake pgx satisfast with 20 grams. Garden of life has a whopping 28 grams. If whey is your thing body fortress has 30 grams for one scoop/ 60 for 2. All low carb/ low sugar. Hope this helps. Alopecia Areata and VSG?

Are you getting enough protein? I have seen that happen when not enough protein is being consumed. Some of my vegetarian friends experienced hair loss but once they incorporated some form of protein it stopped. I have read that this may occur after the surgery due to the change in diet so I am going to make sure i try to intake some form of protein in hopes of it not occuring.
