  1. Where did you get the pro fast oatmeal?
  2. I'm just about 3 months post op and have been doing FANTASTIC. My daughter and I went to one of our favorite healthy eating restaurants. I hadn't been there since surgery. Without thinking, I went to the salad bar at a restaurant. Few leaves of spinach, grated carrots, grated beets, and a little tofu salad. Next thing I know, my plates almost empty, I'm stuffed and wanting to vomit. I know I ate too fast. I also didn't chew as completely as I should have. I don't even remember chewing. lunch was at noon. I was uncomfortable until about four o'clock. I didn't feel like eating until eight o'clock. Even then, I had to make myself have a little Protein. I wonder if it was the raw veggies, not chewing properly or both that was the issue?
  3. I totally know that the band is different for everyone, I just had my second fill and meat is not my friend, but I can eat pringles with dip. I don't do that very often though because I am trying to find other ways of getting my Protein, which pringles lack. (to bad) So i am eating lowfat cottage cheese, Peanut Butter, slim fast for Breakfast because that is all I can handle in the morning. Those things taste pretty darn good when your hungry! It hasn't been easy, but fitting into sizes that I have been trying for years to get into has made it worth it.

    Please don't judge me...

I slim a few times a month. Eating too fast does it. It was gross. I walked around my house for about 10 minutes until I burped a few times and felt much better. My ribs got thrown out Monday night because of this and I was pissed. They tasted so good. We all do it.

    Feeling like a failure...

Carrie, Sorry to hear that you are having difficulties. If I can implore you to make one change it is to stop throwing up. As others have pointed out, we all sometimes eat too much or too fast. Personally, I can't stand vomiting. Even a PB is too much for my spirit to handle, so I tend to be pretty careful. My point is, when you vomit, you subject your band to the kind of pressure that causes slippage. You have done a lot to get this far, don't ruin it by vomiting. Regarding temptation, what can I say. I am a college student, and the alcohol is my little mistress. I have an idea that you may really enjoy. There is no sense in flirting with temptation if you allready have something you desire more. My suggestion is that you learn to love your food. That's right, love it damn it. Why eat all that mediocre S&@# when you can have a delicious meal. Do it up! Make others jealous. Microwave dinners leave much to be desired, so why eat them? Find some healthy meals that you enjoy, that "hit the spot," and kiss that other crap goodbye. Remember, food is like sex. You enjoy it more when you have a good partner.

    Here Is My Situation

Puglet, Let me just say that your weight loss with no fill is really great. You should not even be concerned. It usually comes off really fast at first because you are on liquids. The fill is just nerve racking for the first one but thats only because you dont know what to expect. Just relax, the only thing you will probably feel is the small need that they use to numb the are with, it feels like a bee sting. The stuff you drink has a chalky taste. Mine tasted like thick lemon milk but it was bearable. One last thing, you dont want to drink caffeinated drinks. The caffeine will make you hungrier. Try the decaf coffee, I switched and got use to.
  7. Rev Me Up!

    A first for me

Hello! There are a few items that or OK at fast food restaurants. Also, maybe you can stock up at the grocery store before your return trip. Most delis have a veggie plate with cut up vegetables and a sinlge serving of hummus. Back in the day I used to get a hamburger and salad from McDonalds - throw out the bun and cut the patty onto the salad and eat it. Very low carb and may get you through a bad situation if drive through is the only option. Good luck!
  8. I have been trying to not stop at fast food places since meeting with the dietician for the first time on May 18. For the most part - I've been successful in that. I admit, I have stopped about 5 times during these 3 weeks and have ordered from my favorite take out 3 times. However, that's better than I used to be - I used to stop for fast food every day - for Breakfast and dinner and order take out for lunch every day. So, while I still have a lot of work to do to break my fast food habit, I still count this as a success. On Friday, I'll be leaving for a 15 hour drive (which I am breaking into 2 days) so I can get to Providence to park my car (since it is cheaper there than at my destination) and take a 1 hour train ride to Boston for a week of genealogy research. For the first time ever, I have been thinking about how I will eat during that drive. I spent some time today chopping up some veggies and putting them into ziplock bags for my cooler. I even put some bottles of Water in the freezer which I will then use to keep things cool in my cooler. I also made a batch of those cheese crisps that was posted in the recipe section for the trip (I had to try one - it wasn't bad). I am even planning to take some of my Protein samples with me so I can mix them on the run. I'll stop at gas stations along the way to get more bottles of cold water. While I am in Boston, I do plan to eat out each day - but I have already researched some restaurants that are in the area of my hotel that have healthy foods for not an outrageous price. The trip home will be more difficult - as I'm sure I won't have any veggies left then (and frankly even if I did, they would probably be bad). I realize I could stop at many fast food places and get salads - but I really do not want to do that because it will be too easy right now for me to order stuff I shouldn't be eating. I'm sure I'll figure something out for the return trip. I'm amazed at this change in myself already - and I haven't even gotten to the pre-op diet yet!

    Foods Getting stuck!

I have been PBing a lot lately. It's because I eat too fast and don't chew enough. I chew each piece of meat about 30 times. It should be mush by the time it leaves your mouth. I notice that if I'm hungry, I PB, so I think it's a good idea to eat small meals several times a day to avoid PBs. Also as Tired Old Man or Jack ( I can't remember) says, cut meat in chiclet size; then chew until the meat is pretty much mush. That has worked much better for me. I often mix meat with some soft vegetable so it will go down. That works pretty well. I also notice I PB when I'm stressed. I went up to my brother's in Colorado and PBed for 3 days before it finally stopped. We were working pretty hard and it was a strange place so I guess I was stressed. But later I was able to go to my favorite steak house and eat like a horse. Okay, I had to bring half of my filet home, but I ate it later and had no problems. I have found that walking, jumping and stretching backward helps PBs. Soft bread is murder, but toasted bread like Melba toast works if you chew it a whole lot. Sometimes, I can eat a piece of bread! In Colorado, I ate half a sandwich and it went down very well;then I got hungry again and ate another half a sandwich and PBed. You just never know. I recommend pineapple juice which Carlene calls human drano. It helps if you sip it because it is very acidic and breaks food down. Hope this helps.
  10. So, anyways, as much as I hate to admit it, I was just dying over waiting on my insurance, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, who I have through my husband's workplace. Well, all that is over now. Hurrah! I could hardly sleep over the fact that I spent 6 months going to Mayo out here, had a physcologist, worked out like crazy, etc. and it all would have been for not except for Blue Cross. Oh, I love them. And it wasn't that hard once I jumped through all the hoops at Mayo ( the craziness is, is that I did this for the bypass, and last month my surgeon said, "get the lap band" much less trama for your young body." ) And all these people said Blue Cross would never cover it, but they did! I guess they revised once in 2004, and then back again shorty after. Mayo wrote my letter, (and probably included the book's worth of info on me they collected in 6 months). After the secretary for my surgeon said they sent it to pre-authorization, I called them 2 days later and the gal there said,"I was very lucky to have Blue Cross/Shield, they are very good for approval and fast", they had it mailed, and exactly 12 days later ( including 4th of July) I and Mayo got the approval by mail. So anyways, for anyone out there like me, who was literally freakin' out, it was easy and painless with the insurance, the approval said "deemed medically necessary" . And also, Mayo in MN just started doing lap bands. Dr. Flo Que, she's great, and gets you in fast! Anyways, I didn't want to post this to gloat, just to let other worry-warts like me get some positive stuff, because I always loved the positive posts for insurance. Surgery 8-8-06

Does Your Schedule And Amount Of Food Change

I'm a year out and trying to get into maintenance. I undereat my sleeve so I generally try to keep my portion size to 1/2 cup. I drink right up to the time I start eating but wait 30-45 minutes after eating before I start drinking again. I can drink loads if I swallow steadily but not too fast. If I drink too fast or take too big a gulp it comes up as a watery burp. If you have lost your hunger you will be satisfied with 4 oz, there isn't any reason to eat more and overeating is very uncomfortable when you are on solid food.
  12. i was wondering when can i start practicing softball. Im starting week 4 post-op, and i feel great! im already doing the elliptical and fast walkin on the treadmill for 20mins. I've dropped 25lbs already. so, now i'm ready. *LOL*
  13. Are you eating too fast or too much? I ask because that's how I feel if I eat too much too fast. One Piece of bacon i can do... 2 is too much and it comes back, just my personal experience. You are still early on and just being banded 4 wks ago also may have something to do with it... You will find foods you can eat some weeks you cannot eat others... The band can be fickle. LOL

Did you, or will you ever, feel 'normal'?

Hi , Banded life is pretty normal after almost 2 years and 7 months of practice. I rarely ever have any issues at all, an occasional golfball to remind me I am eating too fast or too much, but generally speaking, my portions are smaller, I almost never finish a plate of food and I can eat everything including bread, steak and chicken in limited quantities. The sensation of fullness is different for everyone. I eat about 6-8 oz of food and it seems that when I reach this point, I am satisfied, I start to get the tightness in my chest or food seems to uncomfortable to eat anymore and then I stop. I usually try to stop before this feeling, but sometimes its hard to do because I like what I am eating. I notice if I sit too long, I am prone to overeat, so I try to get up and do something else after about 15 minutes at the table. If I eat too long, I get that really full feeling, stuffed and I hate that feeling so I dont indulge past 6-8 oz of food. I DO notice what folks eat now and find that portions are really big and I still have guilt about throwing food away. Regarding eating out in restaurants, I do go to buffets and all kinds of restaurants, enjoy them immensely, stick to the meat, fish and Protein, salad bar and veggies and eat a small dessert . Having the band is not a death sentence. I probably eat more than most bandsters do, but I have done well with a looser band until as of late. I need a fill and I am scheduled to go in and get one next week to get myself on track. Dont worry. YOu will feel so much more in control of your eating with the band. Babs in TX 334/180ish -150 ish

To fill or not to fill

Question - I see the doc on Nov. 8th and he is going to ask if I think I need a fill....how do you know? I think I might need one cuz I don't get full as fast....and can probably eat more. I usually stop when I "think" I've had enough! Is that how it should be? If I was banded on 9/24, is it too soon? I know it's only 1/2 cc usually; but what do you think? N*

    hungry or not

Hi Iam Sounds like your stoma is still pretty swollen and the softs are just irritating it. GOod thinking going back to the fluids. Keep in mind, lots of bandsters are tighter during the day. So next time you want to progress to softs, try later in the day AND try drinking something hot before hand to get the stoma as relaxed as possible. I know we all have timelines as to when we are supposed to transition, but sometimes we just need an extra day or more before we can without adverse reactions. Don't try to push through this pain. It will only further inflame the area which will set you back to being on liquids longer. The fact that your food is not passing is just an indication that 1) band is too tight still and 2) your bites may be too big or you are eating too fast. After a small bite, put spoon down and wait 30 seconds. See if it makes a difference. Cravings are normal when you are deprived of any sweet, fatty or salty foods. Try to be creative and find ways to satiate those cravings...maybe a icepop for instance, crystal lite (or similar) drinks

    is my band still there/.

Hi Francesca, My band was removed on Dec 1st and I also feel like it is still there! I can only eat small amounts and I get full very quickly. I also don't wake up insanely hungry like I did before I had the band. Also, when I eat a bit fast, I get all these gurgling noises, just like when I ate too fast with the band. Weird, huh? Maybe we are both losing our minds.

Self-payers, how long did the process take

MIne was about a month. But the doc took a vacation during that time too:) It was very fast. But i had to remind them everytime i called or had an appointment... then they expedited it. I think they are so used to having insurance issues. But it was pretty quick.
  20. Okay, don't you think that after enduring 15-20 years of obesity, endless sleepless nights, seeking out a surgeon and a relatively new weight-loss procedure, 3 WEEKS of opti-fast, abdominal surgery, not being able to eat, wondering if your doing aright........losing 38 pounds......that if someone noticed you have lost weight they would TELL YOU!!!!!! Apparently, not so. After whining to my family that I seem to be the only one able to tell that I've lost weight, they all said they noticed a different area of my body looking smaller....but were afraid to say anything.....Hmmmmmmmmmmmm:confused: ,
  21. Hi Alisomniac, When I started this journey, I called my insurance company and found out exactly what I needed for my surgery to be covered. They sent me all the papers I needed, to know what they expected of me. I have regents/blue cross and had to have a year of seeing a dr. or nutritionalist for my weight. So I've had a long journey. I had so many test. Sleep apnea, colonoscopy, lung tests, blood tests, ultra sound, EKG, and of course the phyc eval. These are not required by insurance in most cases. I think it's the dr. decision, and they are all different. Mine is a real stickler. I'm on my pre op diet now, and it's nothing but Sugar free pops, sugar free jello, strained soup, and 3 protein drinks a day. Tons on Vitamins. Some people on this forum get to eat like a lean cuisine meal each day with their protein drinks. I would love that. Does your insurance even require you to have a referral? Mine didn't. I just did a lot of research on wl drs. and picked one. Then attended his seminar. I think most of them have seminars. My surgery date is May 6th, and I didn't think it would ever get here. I wish you luck on your journey, but unfortunatly, it will probably not be as fast as you would like it to be.
  22. I go through this same debate with myself. It's obvious from my sig. that I have not had a fill since Nov, and that I only have .7 cc in my band. I definitely can eat more than 4 oz...and like you describe, I get the gofball if I eat too fast or take too big of bites. Basically, I just decided to take it easy and slow, in the hopes of keeping my band and avoiding erosion problems. I also have a niece who is too tight, and she is having problems. I may get a little fill at the end of the summer, but for now, I am still losing at what I consider a nice pace, maybe 3-4 pounds a month (but not steady, kinda in spurts) and I'm happy. It's a personal choice, I think. Good luck with your choice! Cindy
  23. Hey, there. I found BariatricPal by way of the Big Book of Roux en Y. I am currently pre-op and in the process of determining if I want to commit to this extreme change in lifestyle. My surgery date is set for July 7, pending approval of insurance and pre-ops. As of right now, I am 90% sure that I want the surgery. I have an an all-or-nothing type personality, but I'm not the type to push the envelope or take risks. When I commit to a diet and exercise, I give it my all; unfortunately, as proven by the many diets I have failed, my all isn't good enough. As far as a healthy lifestyle goes, I am either "on" or "off," but my biggest problem is that when I'm off, my eating habits are extreme - my diet consists of fast food, ice cream and pastries. I think the reason for the extreme off behavior is that I haven't found a good enough tangible reason to NOT go to extremes. "Tangible" is the key word there - yes, I may be shortening my life and yes, I may be missing out on a better quality of life, but those reasons are so hypothetical when most days I'm tired and hungry after a long day at work and I want something that is convenient and tastes good; uh, what do you know, there's McDonalds, perfect, won't even have any dishes to do! - unfortunately, at that point in time the fast tasty food is much more tangible than trying to live healthy. The surgery will give me the very tangible reason I need stop acting out on impulse desires. For me, knowing I'm going to get sick and run the risk of a rupture is much more tangible than the thought that maybe I'll live longer and maybe I'll have a better quality of life. I am a cautiously optimistic person by nature. I welcome any thoughts anyone may have about me, my reasons for the journey and/or the journey.
  24. good vibes sent your way and hoping things go fast for us all.

    I need some advice.

If you have read a bunch of blogs you must know that it is very inconsistent.... and that pretty much everyone stalls around 2-3 weeks post op. Also, if you lost weight pre-op, well, you won't have the shocking fast weight loss the first month. so, my advice is to just keep doing the right thing, rocking that sleeve and the weight will come off!
