Almost 5 days post-op and on mushy/pureed stage

Your post-op progression is not at all unreasonable, and is consistent with what the more experienced sleeve/DS practices do. Both my wife and I were on soft/mushy/puree in the hospital (as tolerated). Some patients may stay on more liquids longer depending upon how much inflammation they have in the stomach. My wife was slower to progress than I was, but within the normal expectations for the program. If your protein requirements are only 40g, which is on the low side (typically 50-60g minimum for smaller women,) I would certainly use something better than Genepro, as that stuff, at best, is substantially overstated in its' protein content.
  2. I can officially say that she is BETTER! The cramping faded slowly, as did the radiating shoulder pain. She is now 2 weeks post op and already on soft foods (per her surgeon’s rules). She had a breakfast burrito this morning and is stoked to be eating “real food” again. I am meal prepping for her and myself and she is already down 22lbs. She feels great, we went on a short trip on Sat and she put in 15,000 steps. She is killing it! I will say, she still gets pain if she eats too fast, she forgets and is quickly reminded to SLOW DOWN! She is learning why it feels like to be full. We think it is crazy that she is able to eat so well now… we weigh everything and all of her meals are 4oz total and she does not drink anything 3.0 mins before or after meals. Low fat, no sugar and she is doing awesome. She is able to get down 60-80grams of protein and 4-5 bottles of water (with GENEPRO protein powder in 2 or 3) with no issues. God is good! Thanks all for the kind words.
  3. I have slowly worked my way up to about 40oz of Water a day and have been using the GENEPRO Protein. Am still thirsty I real want a tall glass of skin milk or ice water. Anybody else is this normal ?
  4. Last Friday at 12:30pm I had my vsg procedure. Everything went smooth. I was walking within 30 minutes, and sipping Water. I was released around 6pm. The first evening was a bit painful from the gas, and I slept in a recliner. I was able to sip on more water. Day 2 similar in gas pain. Gas X and walking helped a lot. I have no issues getting 60 - 70 oz of liquids. I primarily drink water, but like the sugar free Popsicles, Jello and broth. My only issue now is lower back pain. I have an appointment with my pcp today, so I will inquire with her. I have no issues with getting in Protein. Right now I'm using EAS shakes (vanilla & chocolate), and typically in the morning I have a premier shake from Walmart. I like to start with premier because it has 30g of protein. I add GENEPRO Protein powder to broth, and have made up a blender concoction with it. My blender drink is ice, skim milk (3oz), genepro (tsp), and chocolate EAS shake. I am currently down 18lbs. This may sound like a lot, but my doctor didn't have the pre op diet. So I'm prepared for it to slow down soon. Height 6'7 SW 372 CW 354 GW 260 SW 372 GW 260

    Diarrhea, anyone? [emoji51]

I developed severe lactose intolerance after my VSG. I had horrible diarrhea and my heart rate would increase. I tried the lactose pills and they helped a bit, but not nearly enough. I now drink muscle milk and use genepro. I know GENEPRO is controversial and I am probably not getting the Protein that they claim (or equivalency), but I wanted to give it a try and see how it goes for me. Age: 37 Height: 5’6 Starting BMI: 37 VSG: 4/16/18 Starting Weight: 241 Surgery Weight: 229 Current Weight: 213 (17 days post op) GW: 160 MFP: Fit4LifeAR

    How long on liquid diet

The post-op surgical instructions vary significantly from surgeon to surgeon and program to program, but in my case the liquid diet was 2 weeks pre-op and 3 weeks post-op. The cream of wheat option is that it is mixed with skim milk (or unsweetened almond milk) to a loose, 'pourable' consistency. I add 30 grams of unflavored Genepro powder and it works fine. No problems with taste or digestion so far.

    Protein powder

It seems like everyone keeps raving about genepro protein. I personally like the Premier protein chocolate shakes cause they are already made.

    Drinking

I agree in principle, and will most likely bring it up, but I doubt it will do any good. It is fighting corporate inertia. I had an in depth conversation with my nutritionist about Genepro, which they recommend regularly, explaining that you can't put two pounds of poop in a one pound bag. She nodded her head and said , yeah yeah yeah, but I got the distinct impression she is still telling people how great it is. I don't know for sure, but I do know how corporate cultures stultify independent thinking or new ideas.

    3 Days out!

Premier Protein RTD shakes - they have 5.5g of protein per ounce. Isopure RTD has 4g of protein per ounce. I have also started mixing GENEPRO into broth and strained Soup - I end up with 30g of protein in 8 oz of soup, which I can drink in less than an hour.
  10. The first thing you should have said was "the nutritionist said....." It's a bit disconcerting that the team is not on the same page. Call them out on it. Also check out other brands of protein. Syntrax and GENEPRO are popular and can be mixed with Water. I also used Prosource Nocarb while in the hospital and for the first month post-op. It's a bit viscous, but mixes well with water and herbal teas. That sounds like full liquids unless you are doing protein drink/waters. By definition clear liquids are just that, liquids you can see through. Full liquids is anything in liquid form with a leaning towards a thinner consistency.

    Coffee post VSG

I had my first cup 3 weeks out. I have had one cup each morning since and in addition to my coffee I add a little cream and a scoop of GENEPRO unflavored Protein powder to it. Lasts me a couple hours and then I usually am ready for like a hard boiled egg or yogurt by like 9:30-10 am. And have already gotten in 30 g of protein.

Very good article on Protein Synthesis

GENEPRO is shit. It's marketing hype. Basically BCAA. The only people I know who use it are women on this forum who don't like the flavor of whey. You can't get 30 grams of Protein from 15 grams of powder. They'll say it is some chemical magic that allows it to absorb as though it is 30 grams or some such BS though. Then they'll say their blood work came perfect and yadda yadda yadda... Go talk to as many lifters as possible and see if any of them use that crap. Sent from my phone. Please forgive brevity and spelling.
  13. Doc put me on Optifast and Genepro but before fasting and after surgery I will Be using Premier Protein, Genepro and inspire protein.

    How to heat protein powder?

I use GENEPRO powder in soup and no curdling or clumping and I heat it up! But I want to try a sample pack of different cocoa and coffee from bariatric pantry because I'd pay more to have it premixed if it tasted awesome! You could check some of theirs out? I'm ready to try decaf coffee with Protein... Maybe today.
  15. I use GenePro in my coffee every morning. No taste to it. Dissolves completely. 30g of protein in one small scoop but I've been told it's actually half of that. I'm ok with that! 15g first thing in the morning is great! Sent from my SM-J700T using BariatricPal mobile app

    Carbohydrates

Doc told me to shoot for 90-100 grams of protein. The vast majority of that is coming from protein supplements (I use Genepro powder) but I'm getting the rest from food. For example, lunch today was 2.5 oz of grilled Mahi Mahi and about 4 small bites of a baked potato. All in all I've had 17g of carbs so far today.

    Puree stage

@@TanishaP The only way I get my Protein is with an unflavored Protein Powder as @@blizair09 suggested. If you don't do that - you'll probably have to supplement with shakes still (which is something I couldn't stand anymore). I bought GENEPRO and it is really good - I've added it to butternut squash and sugar free pudding and you can't even tell it's in there.

    Protein Powders

I love Genepro! It has 30 grams of protein in one tablespoon. It is tasteless and odorless and supposedly mixes instantly in hot and cold beverages. However, I have found that not to be true. I haven't been able to mix it with cold. I use it in hot beverages. It's so easy to get my 60 to 90 grams per day this way.

    Genepro protein!

I'm 2 weeks post op. I mix genepro with about two ounces of coffee and one cup of fairlife chocolate milk. I love it. It tastes like an iced mocha and gives me 43 grams of protein. And it's not sickly sweet or thick like protein shakes.

    Protein Shakes

I just ordered some Syntrax nectar in Cookies and cream, and unflavored GENEPRO off amazon. I saw some really awesome reviews on these. Of course I got them to stockpile, as I can't even enroll in the bariatric plan till 1/2/15, but you better believe, I'll be calling at 8am bright and early to get this party started!!
  21. Syntrax nectar, Isopure, and GENEPRO are my best friends. I just started puréed food yesterday and was able to get most of my Protein from food. For bkfst I made a green strawberry & spinach smoothie with coconut Water and a scoop of Genepro. Each scoop is only a tbsp and 30g protein. You can add it into anything, it's great. A lot of times I add it to unsweetened applesauce. Then for a mid-morning snack I used a Hillshire Snacking pack (grilled chicken bites) and puréed the chicken with the honey mustard dipping sauce. Each pack is 15g protein and 120 cal. It was delicious. lunch was a pack of lemon pepper tuna mixed with a couple tsp mayo, puréed. That was only about 123 cal and 18g protein. And dinner I puréed some grilled chicken and hummus, with a couple of pitted kalamata olives thrown in. That was about 200 cal and 20g protein. In between all of that I drink as much water or Syntrax Nectar (if I need protein) as I can. Some days I don't hit 64 oz but I try to get as close as possible. Syntrax makes it easier to hit liquid and protein simultaneously. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  22. Which brand and where did u buy it Sent from my HTC Desire 626s using the BariatricPal App GENEPRO unflavored Protein powder seems to be popular. You can mix it to almost anything. Just be careful not to heat it, since it can lose some of it's potency. You can add it to warm broth but don't put the protein in the microwave. It also mixes to cold stuff like milk or yogurt. Use unsweetened almond milk if you have problems with lactose. Nilla

    ? About Genepro unflavored

I've not tried it in Water but I've mixed it with just about everything else (including hot decaf coffee) and it's virtually undetectable. I had surgery in September and since October I have used no other Protein supplement but GENEPRO. My surgeon approved it and my NUT researched it because I was concerned about comments I had read here, and she said the peptide was completely appropriate. It's the only whey product I can ingest without gagging from either the smell, taste, or both. I got the numbers back from my blood tests on the 20th and every number was within normal range, including protein. My surgeon was very happy with my numbers. Let us know how it worked in water and Benefiber. Best of luck, Carol
  24. I believe I may be spiking my meals with too much Protein. I've been putting 1/2 scoop of GENEPRO Protein powder in my black Beans for good measure. Yesterday my kidneys were hurting a little bit. As I read about possible causes, one was "excess protein". It seems as if your are not active enough and have too much protein, it is difficult for your kidneys to process the oversupply. I guess I'll be cutting my spiking out. I'm the typical personality type that believes if one is good then 3 or 4 must be a whole lot better.

Anyone willing to share their food diary?

Bear in mind that my fridge is emptying out because I'm moving this weekend...normally I'd have more store-bought stuff on my menu for the day. This is me halfway into week 7 post-op. Today it's been like so: Breakfast: 1 scrambled egg with onion and a little cheese, some fruit puree from Trader Joe's (a few spoonfulls) Protein drink (1 scoop of GENEPRO with a 16oz cup of Crystal Light mix/water Lunch: 1.5oz of chopped up chicken satay from a restaurant I like (tossed in the peanut sauce) and a couple TBSP of potato salad with egg Dinner: A small side order of String Bean Chicken from Panda Express grabbed on my way to work (I didn't quite finish it) Will probably add a little protein powder to my drink later to make sure I get enough for the day, as well.
