  1. basically, the closer you get to a normal BMI, the slower the weight will come off. I lost 16 lbs the first month, c. 10 lbs (give or take) until I was about six or seven months out, then it dropped down to maybe 5-8 lbs a month, then after the first year, it was less than five lbs a month - sometimes just 2 or 3 lbs. it's because the lighter you are, the fewer calories you need. When I weighed over 300 lbs, I was probably eating over 3000 kcal/day. When you're eating that much, you can cut 1000 - or 1500 - or even 2000 calories a day, meaning you're going to drop weight pretty quickly. I'm trying to lose 10 lbs right now. My maintenance level is about 1600 kcal/day. Cutting even 1000 calories is unadvisable. That would put me at 600 kcal/day. if one were to eat 600 kcal/day for more than a couple of occasional days, they'd need to be under medical supervision. And cutting 1500-2000 calories from my daily intake when I normally eat 1600? Ha. Impossible. I can cut 200-300 calories safely. That translates to very slow weight loss - about 1/2 a pound a week. anyway, long way of saying, yes - your weight loss will slow down the further out you go.
  2. I don't think there's much - if any - difference. The first few weeks after either surgery is challenging - but once you get a few months out, you no longer have any food restrictions - you're just eating a lot less than you did pre-surgery. You've brought this all up before - and we've told you that it's really not going to be any different. Lots of us can eat pastries (well, occasionally - else you risk gaining weight back, just like you would have with the sleeve!), drink wine, and try new foods when we travel. I"m not sure why you think you're going to have lots of unpleasantness. I would say that's very rare.

    At least 3 Years Postop!

I still track my food intake at 7.5 years out. I make healthy choices - although I don't beat myself over the head if I happen to have a splurge day (esp on a holiday). I just get right back to it. I also exercise most days of the week.

    7 days post op issues

the above people are correct - a) you had nerves cut and it takes awhile for them to regenerate and b) liquids go right through you (so even after nerves are healed, you won't feel a restriction from liquids). You should start feeling the restriction once you move to solid foods. also, I never had issues, either. I'm not a dumper - haven't dumped once in the 7.5 years since I had surgery (and 70% of us are NOT dumpers). I did throw up once in awhile during the first few weeks post surgery as I was learning what - and how much - my pouch would tolerate. Almost never vomit any more.

    At least 3 Years Postop!

I had the Loop DS, but my stomach is a VSG stomach, if that counts? And, I'll be 3 years post op next month so I don't know if I count, but... my tip is to take the weight loss phase and use it to learn how to eat in a better and more sustainable way. Make healthier choices, but allow yourself the freedom to eat the things you want in moderation (i.e not all the time). If you start to put on weight then monitor your calories (though in year 2 you WILL put on anywhere between 5-20 pounds back on average, or so I've been told by my surgeons office. I originally put 21 pounds on due to a med I was taking and once I stopped taking the med I worked on getting the weight off and was able to lose half the weight I'd gained, but I can't get under 186 pounds no matter what I do. I'm okay with it though as long as I stay in the 180's, but if my weight creeps into the 190's I start monitoring my calories closely to see if I'm eating too much. Which I usually am lol. I cut back and the weight comes back off, but stalls once again at 186 😒).

How much walking did you do?

After a few weeks after surgery my body was so fatigued from limited calories. So once your body doesn't have a reserve, rest and take care of yourself with little walks a day. This lasted about 2 weeks, until I got to soft foods and had was eating 1/2 cup meals. I almost left my grocery cart. Twice. As I was so exhausted and just wanted to go home.

    Mac N Cheese

I had chickpea spaghetti noodles. 1/8 cup with 1/3 cup 93% ground beef with low sugar marinara.no problems, chickpea has great protein and doesn't have the dough ball in stomach like pasta and bread. You could make some Mac and cheese with lentil pasta noodles. I do carbs 3x week but mostly 1/8 cup of veggies and 1/3 cup meat to get about 1/2 cup a meal.
  8. I've learned to do once a week but sometimes I'm up 1-2#, then the next week down #5. You have to trust the surgery works and look at how your clothing feels, face shows it first. I'm in a stall and realized my thighs don't touch.
  9. I religiously measured water and with 15 minute timer, sipped to get the water in. Then reset 15 min timer on my phone once water was down. Slow but sure. At 4 weeks went to a kids sippy cup after measuring 10 little sips, spitting it in measure cup to calibrate intake. Now at 8 weeks 18 sips is equal to 1/2 cup. Staying there until 6 months. Still trying to drink every 15 minutes. Take water in car to drink every 15 minutes. I don't like water so use sugar free skittles flavoring. The strawberry ones I mix with low fat Greek yogurt.
  10. I loved the puree stage after 2 weeks before and after surgery of chicken broth... pureed foods added seasonings, spices. I did turkey chili, Jimmy Dean egg frattata with bacon, meatloaf with catsup added. Baby food turkey sweet potato with a pinch of taco seasoning, chicken curry salad. After 3 weeks puree it was great to get to soft foods. Just got to regular food and nervous. Going to get set up on Fitness app to track calories, water and protein. Eating 1/3 cup meat, 1/8 cup veggie or carb. 3x day, 2 snacks of same but with no carb, one of fruit.
  11. I found my rate of loss just got slower. & slower. There wasn’t a sudden change. It goes hand in hand with you slowly increasing your calorie intake as your portion sizes get larger & you’re eating a wider variety of foods which you should be doing. Plus every week you have less to lose. The hair loss is temporary & only lasts about three months. Small cost to pay for the weight loss. The thing to watch is complacency in your food choices & activity. It can be easy to let a treat become a more regular addition to your diet, to add extra snacks, larger portions etc., not tracking & measuring as carefully or regularly. Boredom & diet fatigue are real. But stick to your plan, recommendations from your dietician & the new habits & behaviours you’ve been establishing.

    Help with nausea?

Thanks for your detailed reply Laura. I'm so sorry to hear how awful all of that was for you but I'm so happy you had a good doctor that could figure it out. Yes, I'm hoping to have the x-rays etc., as my nausea is happening when I eat and some when I drink. From everything I've heard this sounds like a stricture but my surgeon is on maternity leave and has completely negated what I've said and just says it will get better. Unfortunately, it's getting worse. I'm seeing another surgeon in her practice next week. Will let you know what I find out. Thanks again so much!

    Help with nausea?

Hi Laura Sorry to hear you are feeling so unwell. I know how horrible it is. I definitely understand the 'what have I done!?' stage. I ended up in hospital 3 times. Had all sorts of tests, swallowing x-rays, CT scan and nothing came back. The final time I ended up in hospital I was in a state, I'd lost the feelings in my legs and was not with it mentally at all. Luckily, I had a great doctor who recognised my symptoms as a thiamine deficiency. I was in malnutrition. Had all the blood work and everything was low, potassium, calcium iron. Was in hospital for a week and was put on lots of IV drips and anti nausea medication and within a week I was able to stand and eat soft foods again. What happened to me was rare so I'm not suggesting this is what's happening at all, so please don't worry. A lot of my nausea was from dehydration too but because I couldn't keep liquids down so it was a viscous circle. All I can say is I'm 9 months out now, 184lbs lighter and I have no regrets at all. It was a horrible start but I can eat what I want now (within reason no sugar or high fat) just much smaller amounts. I now how horrible this first part is so please bare with it. Im glad you have a doctor's appointment soon. The anti nausea meds definitely helped and time, which is unbearable to hear when you just want it gone now. Good luck and try if you can to stay positive.

    Help with nausea?

I hope you are doing much better, did your nausea every go away? I'm 7 months post op and I've had nausea since week 3. I only have Zofran and my surgeon isn't overly helpful. What medication did they up for you? Thanks. Laura

    Help with nausea?

Hi Laura, I've been very nauseous and wondering if I'm dehydrated since week 3. I've tried to get all my liquids and usually don't go below 50 oz. How did you know you were so dehydrated? I've been looking for the signs but wonder if I need bloodwork to really know. I hope you are still doing well. I'm at that "I think I'm regretting it stage". Thanks. Laura

    Help with nausea?

Hi There, I'm about 7 weeks out and have been nauseous after eating since week 3. It started before Thanksgiving and has only gotten worse. Did yours ever go away? They are telling me the same thing, that "it will go away" but I'm afraid I have a stricture or ulcer of something. I haven't really been able to go past soft foods because when I try to graduate up to solid foods, my nausea is worse. Last night, I tried again and my nausea lasted through today. This has been terrible. I have an appt. next week to see if they will do some radiology to make sure I don't have a stricture or ulcer but I feel for you as well having this everyday. Any update on how you are and what prompted your nausea everyday would be really helpful. Did you ever get any radiology?
  17. Hi everyone, happy Holidays to all! I'm sending this out because I need accountability here. I've been slowly losing, but at least the scale is heading in the right direction. I was doing great on my life style eating plan, until I baked a couple of batches of sugar cookies for the Grandkids to decorate. They stayed in my freezer for one week. I would grab one here and there. Plus, I baked some brownies for a Christmas function and the left overs are in my freezer! I fell back into old eating patterns, right now I'm under massive stress, aside from the holidays, travel, etc. I went back into stress eating, the more physical pain I was having, the more brownies I crammed into my mouth! I have now either given away or threw away all cookies, brownies, frosting, etc. If it ain't around, I can't eat it. Back to my program I go. I don't think I regained any weight, just slowed down the process.

    ARG!!

I stall HARD. it happens, we get it, but it doesn't stop it from hurting my feelings haha
  19. I was revised from VSG to RNY over three years ago. I can say that my lifestyle and routine is about 95% the same as VSG (and about 75% the same as pre WLS.) I think I was back to what I considered normal in about 4 months after surgery. Your experience may vary of course. The 5% margin of difference between VSG and RNY was the immediate post op period where I had to adjust to new bathroom habits and figuring out exactly which food I no longer could tolerate. Now even the things I didn’t tolerate immediately I can have in some amount and some things I just don’t want at all (super sugary sweet stuff). I can’t speak to the weight loss aspect because I was at my goal and have pretty much stayed there, but the reflux/GERD is gone and has not returned, yet (although unlikely anything is possible). Good luck
  20. I’m having my revision from sleeve to bypass a week from today. Going over all the dietary changes and potential unknowns, I’m just not looking forward to this at all. I wish my weight and reflux were much worse so the revision felt 100% necessary; right now it feels more like 50%, but that’s not going to change the longer I wait. I’m dreading the post-op period and all it’s unpleasantness. Long term, I’m really worried about food intolerances changing my ability to enjoy things that bring me a lot of pleasure. Trying new foods when I travel, indulging in a pastry on a Friday morning, drinking fabulous wine. I swear, I don’t even remember how I managed all the mental and social repercussions the first time around. It just feels more daunting this time. Maybe because it was so unambiguously needed then, I had a more gung ho attitude. Could someone please tell me that six months or a year from now, my lifestyle will be pretty much the same as it is today? Perfectly okay to fib to me if needed 😅
  21. Hello Everyone!! I am about 1 week and a half away from being 3 months Post-Op! I am making this post so that I can get a heads up of any changes I should be expecting soon, I know one may or may not be hair loss, but my main question is will my weight loss begin to slow down drastically? I understand that these changes are different for everyone but I would still appreciate everyone's input since I don't know what to expect lol

    Minimal Weight Loss

Thanks everyone, I’m still pleased with what weight loss I’ve had already and I know everyone is different so shouldn’t compare to others but seems like everyone’s loss has been greater so just want to make sure it seems like I’m on track. Fully aware I won’t loose 60lbs overnight haha! only just moved onto soft food (no puree stage) been on liquid for 4 weeks. I’m tracking what I’ve started to eat on my fitness pal it’s still only circa 700/800 cals a day as portions and Snacks are small, getting my 60g Protein and Water intake as per my plan so everything seems on track for what I’m supposed to be doing. I feel great in myself - started to incorporate walking daily - I know I’m still early days so only time will tell 😊

    Minimal Weight Loss

Hello and welcome in this forum. I weighed in, heavier than you. I lost 15lbs during my 3 week pre op. Then 27lbs in the first month. So you seem on track to me. What kind of foods are you eating and are you tracking your proteins and calories ? Everyone has a different weight loss journey and its not a great idea to compare with others. Medications, age, height and medical issues are different with each person. This leads to different weight loss. Also how much you can walk or exercise can benefit weight loss.
  24. Hey, I had a VGS on 22nd Nov and now 4weeks PO. I’ve lost 22lbs so far (11lbs of this on the LRD pre surgery). I was hoping for a little more progress than where I’m at currently, I’ve been sitting at a loss of 22lbs for the last 2 weeks - I know of the 3 week stall period, just want to see if anyone had had similar losses to me in their first 4 weeks to see if I’m on track, as often posts I see it seems everyone has massive losses in the first month or so and mine seems a little low :( starting weight was 250lbs ans I’m 5ft 8in for reference - thank you
