I don't eat artificial sweeteners so during the liquid phase for me I lived on my chocolate Protein powder which has stevia, Soups, yogurt, v8 juice, Water and a couple days of gatorade when i wasn't able to get enough calories. It was a rough couple of weeks especially the 2nd week but once i got my routine down it wasn't bad. A variety of soups helped.

@@choosehope I have the exact same problem and was very worried about what to do when I started this process. I was able to eat yo plait light yogurt as it does not contain aspartame. I was told by my nut that I should not worry and avoid any foods, drinks with aspartame. For example I was told to eat yogurt with sugar in it or pudding with real sugar in it. Leverage honey or agave nectar instead. this because you eat so little of it if you follow the food plan. Yogurts and puddings for me is where I eat sugar. I do use sugar free syrup but it is very very rare that I even eat anything where I need syrup. It does become more difficult for you when you think about what to drink. I don't use any sugar free products at all with the exception of yo plait light. I drink water only. I sometimes will infuse it with real fruit if I get sick of plain water but for me that is not a problem. This can be done without artificial sweeteners of any kind. Prior to having bariatric surgery I suffered from migraines 5 out of 7 days per week. I use Dihydroergotamine rescue shots to relieve them when I get them which makes them go away within the first hour. Now I probably get them 2 or 3 times a month if that! The high protein low carb diet has really helped me with headaches. I used to get them so bad that I developed arthritis in my jaw from clenching due to the pain. My neurologist told me this is common for people who suffer long term. I am 52. My son and 11 year old granddaughter get them as well. It is probably the worst pain and is intolerable and trust me, I have had 5 spinal surgeries. I know pain! I hope that WLS helps you with your migraines as well. I was not expecting it to and was quite surprised! Good luck!

During the liquid phase I used pre made shakes by premier Protein. I did not have any Popsicles what so ever and i ate regular Yoplait yogurt which was recommended by my nut. Because you eat so little of it at any one time the sugar did not bother me at all nor did the fat. I cannot tolerate any sugar substitutes so I just tried to choose things without sugar. I lived on homemade chicken broth, 1percent cottage cheese, yogurt and creamed Soups through the liquid phase and then ended up living on it through the puréed stage as well. I did not do well with puréed meats and I don't eat Beans. If you do that is a very good source of protein. I could not and still cannot tolerate eggs after trying them puréed. That is the only thing that made me vomit. I am still bummed about that because I used to love eggs. Every few weeks I will try eggs again to see if I can handle it but they weigh very heavy in my pouch and make me uncomfortable. Also, in the first few months after I even found myself lactose intolerant from the sugar in milk. That finally did go away. I also did not even like the taste of anything sweet or greasy. I ended up buying Kozy Shack chocolate pudding at about 4 months because it is not overly sweet. Prior to that I did not even touch pudding. That is about the only sweet thing I actually eat at this point and I do eat it fairly often. I never had full on dumping syndrome. I am not sure why but I am very happy about it. I am down 114lbs in 10 months with 31 to go until goal.

This meal issue post op is puzzling to me, but I guess it's because every doctor is different. My post-op diet is to have clear liquids for 10 days, and another 10 of liquids along with protein shakes, milk, yogurt, and jello... I cannot eat mushies till day 21... It's interesting to see that everyone starts food at different times post-op.

I've been crazy busy the last few days and haven't gotten anything done. My fill...hmm it works if I eat ONLY solid food, and until about 4pm...then I can eat anything. Problem, I'm scared of solid food now. LOL So I'm eating yogurt and protien shakes and other mushies in the morning. Kinda kinda defeats the purpose of the fill I guess. I did decide I'm not going back to 800 calories. I think that is just too low for me. I've lost 2lbs and I'm on my period...so hoping that will drop lower when that is over. I can't eat all of a mcdonalds yogurt now at one sitting...so thats restriction?

1. As far as pills- I was on Zoloft myself along with prescription stomach meds (much larger) and it was not a problem at all. The good news is that I am no longer on anything! Feels so great!!! 2. soda- both myself and my husband have tried soda. It isn't a problem; however, since the pre-op diet and surgery, it tastes TERRIBLE!! I never thought I would give up my Dr Pepper, but once you are away from it for awhile, your tastes changes. they taste like medicine to me. So, soda cravings are no longer a problem. 3.surgeon's experience- the main thing I wanted to know was how many procedures, any deaths due to complications and how accessible would he be after surgery 4. sugar free- not sure about the reason, however, it does help in kicking the sugar addiction. For me, it is like the soda, it just doesn't have the same appeal anymore. Instead of ice cream, I crave frozen grapes now. LOL! 5. yogurt- I won't be much help here. I guess you could dilute it with skim milk to make it more drinkable. However, you will be able to eat yogurt, so I don't see why you would have to make it drinkable. 6. Insurance- For my insurance I had to maintain above a 40 BMI since I had no comorbidities ( insurance accepted ones). They went back three years for BMI. I actually had to redo my 6 month supervised diet. In 2009, my BMI had dropped to 39. My doctor was great about the 6 month diet. I could not drop below the 40 or else the insurance would deny my claim for the reason " you are successful without WLS". AS IF!!!! Anyways, I would lose a couple of pounds, then have a "set back' and gain a pound. I know it sounds awful, but it showed that I was "trying" to lose but not being particularly successful. It is like a game of jumping through hoops. From my experience, don't let your BMI fall below the required min for your insurance. -

~ how big of pills can you take or have you switched over everything to liquids? (I'm on Zoloft, a tiny pill) I am currently on what seems like horse-pill sized antibiotics, and I am getting them down without issue, 4 times a day. In the first 3 weeks after surgery, I had everything in liquid form, but I started out with quick dissolve tylenol when I ran out of the expensive liquid stuff, and I haven't looked back. I have 6ccs in a 10cc band, and I think I'm reasonably close to the green zone. ~ Do you ever drink soda? I'm worried I will miss the bubbles of my diet Dr. Pepper. How does drinking carbonated drinks feel with a lapband? I have the odd diet coke now (sometimes even mixed with vanilla vodka!) and as long as I'm not eating at the same time, I'm fine. I burp a lot, but I haven't exploded yet It makes me feel full, but only for about half an hour. And I'm not having more than one can, spread out over an hour. However, I waited until one month after surgery, before I even tried it. You really need to master burping again, as silly as it sounds, before you try anything carbonated again. ~ what specific questions about my surgeon's experience should I ask? I asked how many lap bands he had put in, and what his rates of complication where, for infection, band slippage, and erosion. ~ Why is it so critical that everything be sugar free? It seems many of the sf foods are higher in carbs to fill in flavor. I think it's all about limiting our overall calories. Carbs aren't the end-all, be all. But if you are talking about things like sugar-free yoghurt/chocolate, where they've filled it with something else full of calories, it might be best to avoid it all together, or really limit the portion and how often you eat it. ~ my go-to yogurt is Dannon Light and fit toasted coconut. Is there something I can add to it to make it "drinkable"? Can you mix it up with milk? We don't get coconut yoghurt here in these parts (Canada) so I'm not sure if you mean that it's just flavoured like coconut, or if it actually has chunks in it. I wouldn't be eating anything with chunks until you are at the approved stage in your doctor's post-op diet. But, I can't see why you couldn't thin out any yoghurt you wanted, and drink it, provided that it's within your doctor's recommended diet. I can't answer the insurance questions at all though, since I'm in Canada, and I was self-pay. -
Help! Stuck In A Rut After Being Banded 5 Years Ago
fericito replied to lharper's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I like the ideas she just gave above. When I knew I was doing this journey I started to change my life so it wouldn't be quite as hard once it was here haha so I don't honestly know what I'll do when I'm back to solids (1 week postop). However I eat a paleo diet (anything you can hunt or gather) so I'd do omlettes in this baggies you can boil, eggs, onions, veggies, etc. and then you throw them in the micro and poof omlette. You can reuse them over and over even though ziploc or whatever says 1 use . I'd boil at least a dozen eggs every week so there was always a go to protein. I'd make almond meal pancakes or sizzle up some sausage and put them in the plastic reusable things so mornings which are always rushed we could just micro stuff and eat in 30 seconds flat. Also got a magic bullet and would do baggies of spinach smoothies which had fruits, spinach, protein powder, etc. all mixed and then just add some greek yogurt or 1/2 c juice in blender at time of making - super easy so yummy. Most of the stuff would last about a week in a baggie since I used fresh so never tried to do more than 1 week. As for lunches sometimes sandwiches but I don't eat grains so for me it was usually turkey roll ups, cucumber slices, chicken salad, etc. or pull all the meat off rotis. chicken and divvy it up, etc. and then I'd make a trail mix once a week and have it all bagged up in 4 oz packages, etc. so that there is always *something* I can take. I'm the queen of running out of time and not knowing what to eat so either fast food or starving neither of which is good for me. -
Food Stuck No Discomfort How Do I Move It
James Marusek replied to harmonyherb's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have heard that meat tenderizer can help clear up blockages but I have never tried that. Generally I force myself to vomit. According to the internet: The most common meat tenderizer used in India is raw (un-ripened) papaya The leaves, and green skin of raw papaya contain an enzyme called Papain. The connective tissue in the meat breaks down when it comes in contact with Papain. Papaya is preferred tenderizer for red meat (Lamb, Mutton, Goat, Beef). It can be used for fowl. The preferred tenderizer for fowl is Yogurt. Glad you are better. -
I make my own and use plain greek yogurt to increase the Protein and cut the sweet. During my all liquid phase I did 2 sweet shakes I made in the nutra bullet and then added unflavored Protein Powder into broth for dinner. That savory made made things bearable. I have no problems blending it into hot beverage. You can't add it over direct heat or it will clump. I either add the powder while whisking after it's in the bowl/cup, or I dissolve the powder with a tiny bit of warmer water and then temper the hot liquids into it. Either way it's completely dissolved and smooth every time. Pretty much any store bought smoothie is going to be high in carbs and sugar and low in protein. I'm on there as Milaxx

Loosing the pre op weight.
FailureIsntAnOption replied to heyred1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My liver shrinking diet consisted of a Muscle Milk for Breakfast, low fat cheese between lunch and bfast. For lunch I had two In-n-out Protein style burgers (wrapped in lettuce instead of bun or another Muscle Milk. Lowfat yogurt or another low fat cheese stick for snack and for dinner a grilled chicken breast and some broccoli. I lost 11 pounds in 10 days doing this. Also, be sure to get out for at least a 30 minute walk each day. Good luck to you! Banded 4/17/09 w/.08 cc First fill 5/30/09 1.6 cc -
I went thru this as well. My dr. said I wasn't eating the right food for dinner if I was still hungry. I know that when I eat salmon or tuna for dinner I am so full I feel like I could bust. I have had 4 fills, the last one was in Sept. If I do get the urge to have a snack I have a cheese stick or yogurt. Good luck with that battle! I had fallen back into the snack habit bad. I am trying to avoid it as much as possible! It is a Daily battle for me.

did you feel any resistance when on full liquids?
GoddessNar replied to rabbitt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I have a bit of resistance right now. My doctor told me I could have yogurt so I had some last night and I think I took too big of a spoonful. I swallowed and felt pain. I had some soup yesterday and felt rather full for a while after that too. It might just be swelling, though. -
Yogurt and water. I only use two of them. It will help your skin better. You can add fruit mask.
-
I have a few. Fruit skin, such as apple skins. Sometimes it's ok, sometimes not. Tortillas. Greasy food. It's either spaghetti sauce with meat or the Pasta, not sure which. Still can't tolerate much dairy other than hard cheeses and Greek yogurt. Margaritas. I think it's the sweet and sour mix. Lynda

Banded 9/24, some questions about the pain and eating
isaviolinist replied to xemi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My port incision hurt the most and I had signifigant discomfort for probably 2 or 2.5 weeks (maybe longer? Cant remember now) after surgery. Sometimes I held a pillow over my tummy when I was lying down. You should try reclining instead of sitting up right. I think reclining helps. When I was post op, for the first 2 days I was drinking about an ounce of Water every hour. I had a few spoons of clear broth Soup too. I did Clear Liquids (so water, clear broth, crystal light, etc) for 3 days. Then I did full liquids for 2 weeks (Protein shakes, thicker Soups sometimes, slim fast...kind of like the pre-op diet). I don't think I had yogurt during that time. After that I did mushies, which is when I think I incorporated thicker things like yogurt in. Then soft solids and solids after that. But its really different from doctor to doctor. Did your doctor say you could have yogurt at this point post op? If he didn't, I would just REALLY stick to what he said. You are giving your stomach time to heal. You don't want it to start churning (which is what happens when you eat, even a little) because it could cause the band to slip. Good luck! -
No more shakes!
Miss Impala replied to Polarbearwifey's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

How Many People Eat How Their Nutritionists Want?
Newfoundlove replied to pandabear's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with gmanbat - I've never heard of a NUT that is against Protein shakes! That being said, pre-op, she didn't want me doing Protein shakes, instead I was on a very low-carb diet (no more than 40 grams a day). So, I didn't eat yogurt or fruit because of the carb content. My NUT didn't care about calories, only carbs. But, I did eat lots of salads, meats, and cheeses. Stayed away from rice, potatoes, etc. My pre-op diet was for two weeks, but I did three and I lost 14 pounds during that three weeks. Now, post-op, I do eat fruit. In fact, once I was cleared for it, I added apples, etc., because I was having constipation which was no fun. I also added in some oatmeal occasionally for breakfast as that helped the stopped up problem as well. -
It is kind of a long story. Shortened version is I was contemplating having my band removed due to complications. I kind of freaked out at the thought of actually losing my band so I recommitted HARD CORE. I have PCOS, so sugar and carbs are a HUGE no no. So I radicaly changed my diet... and started following the band rules best I could with a wonky band. (I just had surgery last week to repair a hiatal hernia and reposition it). I measure measure measure. I stop when my portion is done. I cut out carbs and sugar as best I could. I eat real food, and stay away from processed as much as possible. I went back to a Protein shakes for Breakfast. I started swimming for exercise since a foot injury restricted my options. Typical day: Breakfast: Either Protein Drink, or Chobani yogurt w/Kashi Go Lean Crunch mixed in. Lunch: Left overs usually from dinner. Taco salad is my favorite lunch. (chopped spinach, seasoned ground turkey, mango salsa, cheese) Dinner: 4 oz of protein (Salmon & scallops are favorites) with 1/2 cup green veggies. Asparagus is my favorite. I try and avoid snacking... but if i do get a little hunger I snack on string cheese, or a skinned apple with Peanut Butter, or a few almonds or pistachios. I have been on liquids for almost 2 weeks since I just had surgery last week... so that has helped too. My best advice is really stick to the rules! It is hard. Head hunger is a nasty nasty b***h. I hate her. I fight head hunger A LOT. I just keep living day by day and hoping that if I can string enough good days together I will get there. My journey has been long with a lot of ups and downs. I am looking forward to getting fills and restriction back. I can get my first fill in 3 more weeks. I hope I can keep losing during this restriction free time.

Cottage cheese, refried beans with a little melted cheese and yogurt are great for something quick when you are already very hungry and need something fast. There are definitely a lot of great recipes as well.
