Sleeve at Penn in Philly?
mcgee311 replied to kimmarie_36's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm doing weight management with my primary, but the list of what they go over is in that red folder they gave out in the information session. It's behind the sample letter of recommendation for primary doctor. Sent from my HTC Desire 530 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I also had a debilitating back pain prior to surgery.. 4 pregnancies, 9 years as a gymnast, 6 years in cheer, massive weight gain after said pregnancies.. Also, my posture is terrible after the weight gain. My back didn't stop hurting when I got my RNY.. And it seems to be consistent with where it was before. If I stand up completely straight, my right side of my abdomen has a searing pain- so it's difficult to make adjustment.. Hope you figure out the problem, & you're able to fix it! Hopefully weight loss and exercise will aid.

This is my first time posting, and recently I've decided the lap band might be my best option. A year and 1/2 ago I was on my way to losing weight after having a baby. I went from 230 to 179. I tore my meniscus working out. X-rays revealed I had degenerative arthritis so my doctor did not send me to an orthopedic surgeon immediately. You can't see a torn meniscus on x-ray. He basically told me take ibuprofen. Needless to say my meniscus was torn six months before I had surgery. In any case, it's been a year since my surgery and my knee has never been the same. I was able to maintain my weight for a year but recently I gained 15 pounds a couple of months ago, and another 15 for a total of 30 pounds in 3 months. To make matters worse I am pretty sure I tore my other meniscus last month. I've been hoping it will heal, but it's not happening. Up until last year, I have always been able to work out to lose weight, although I have always had a few extra pounds after having children, but I've always been ok with that. Now I can't even work out anymore (ex. treadmill, lunges, elliptical) and I feel horribly stuck. I am going to get a referral for physical therapy to try to get my knees to as normal as I can. I think at this point, I have fought the good fight, and now I am seriously considering this surgery. Right now I weigh 214 (BMI 36) and to be considered for surgery with tricare prime I need to be at 227 (I am 5' 5".) At the rate I am going the few extra pounds is nothing. This is my question. According to tricare, one criteria is to have severe arthritis. How does one figure what severe arthritis is? I have x-rays with degenerative arthritis in my right knee, and I probably have it in my left. As I understand arthritis does not always show on x-rays. If it shows on an x-ray would this meet the severe arthritis criteria? I may be very close to being diabetic or possibly having it at this point with how much weight I have gained. I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant. Having gestational diabetes is a indicator you will have diabetes at some point in your life, does tricare take this into account? Thank you in advance

Feel off wagon need words of encouragement
Ready for the new Lay-Lay posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello everyone. I will be celebrating my one year anniversary on June 4th. So far I have lost 84 pounds. The problem is within these past 5 months, I have gained 7 pounds. I keep saying I do not know what wrong with me, but I do know. I have fallen off my new lifestyle wagon and started back doing my old habits. I stopped going to my doctor's appointment, I am back to eating starch and coffee. I tried to make excuses but the reality of it all I have gotten lazy again. My family initially started being supportive and when I let my guard down and let my husband bring the wrong food in the house. I need help with a plan to get back on track. -
Not all of us go through "bandster hell". After surgery I was on 2 weeks liquid, 2 weeks mushy, 2 weeks soft but it really wasn't that hard. With the liquid stage I was allowed as much as I wanted so if I was feeling hungry I just ate(drank) some more. I was allowed things like Soups, custard, yogurt, jelly etc. Yes it gets boring and it felt great to be able to go onto mushies but I can't say that I was ever starving. I had my first fill at 3 weeks - yes it was only a tiny 1 but every little bit helps.Again with the mushy stage I was allowed to eat enough to satisfy my hunger. The focus post surgery is about healing more than weight loss. Remember that and you will do fine. It does make a difference having the band. It may be mental, I'm not sure but I know that I have never been able to stick to a liquid diet previously. Knowing that I was getting a band and that each of the food stages including the preop(which is the worst) were finite made it far easier. You know that none of these stages are forever. You can see the end and you know that you have a tool that is going to help enormously.

Slight weight gain between very 1st appt w surgeon and 1st class
Robyn young posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone, I had a slight weight gain (6lbs) between my very first visit with the clinic and surgeon ( I had my period and I was weighed at different times of the day) and I was told you can possibly be denied for that. I did call the clinic and they told me it was ok, you are allowed some fluctuation. I’m the same now. I am waiting for insurance approval at this point. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance! -
Believe it or not he wasn't saying it in a discouraging way-he was just logically thinking that if I can do 6 weeks maybe I can do it without surgery? He is overweight at 6'4 he's 280 -mostly belly weight. You are absolutely right I know I can do 6 weeks because a fill is in the future. When I met my hubby I wasn't fat (not totally skinny but was 185 at 5'6-now I am 248) The weight has got to go-no doubt about it. I am a teacher so I keep thinking when I go back to school in September I should be a lot thinner and people who haven't seen me over the summer will be really suprised! I'll have fun shopping for new clothes too!

Hey everyone!!! I hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving!!! Quick question about MFP. Is there any way to put past weights in? I'm playing catch up. I log my weight on my weight logger and forgot to put it in MFP. Thanks a million!!!!

That's great that you are feeling good. Each person looses weight differently. You will loose the weight according to how you work at the plan that the surgeon and nutritionist gave you. Follow their instructions and you will be very successful. You are healing and it takes awhile to heal internally from this surgery so pace yourself according to what you are instructed by your surgeon. The best to you.

This may be simplistic but I think I broke my stall
MissLiss replied to MissLiss's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@@wascott ...good thing to wonder...so I did some Googling and came up with this: How Many Carbs Do I Need to Spare Protein Loss? Early research into the topic of starvation and low-carbohydrate dieting found that as few as 15 grams of carbohydrates per day can limit nitrogen loss in the body. And raising carbohydrate intake to 50 grams per day severely limits the need for the body to use amino acids for gluoconeogenesis (which is why I suggested setting daily carbs on the low-carb days of The Ultimate Diet 2.0 at 50 grams). This occurs via at least two mechanisms: The increased carb intake maintains blood glucose and insulin at a higher level (inhibiting cortisol release). The carbohydrate provides glucose for the brain, limiting the need to break down body protein. Basically, in the context of dieting, dieters can either jack up dietary protein to cover the increased carbohydrate requirements of dieting or simply eat slightly more carbohydrates to provide them directly. Both have the same end-result. 15-50 grams per day limits the body’s need to break down protein and will allow protein requirements to be set lower than a diet providing essentially zero carbohydrates per day. It was at this web address: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/nutrition/how-many-carbohydrates-do-you-need.html/ Of course, this is only one source...But I'm feeling pretty good about the carb range listed here. I know when I was on Medifast which prompted a light ketosis required carbs to be under 100 per day and mine were often closer to 80. I may not have been able to stick to Medifast for long enough to keep the weight off, but I did lose weight and it really has set me up with some good habits for success with this. I hope the Atkins is doing the same for you. -
This may be simplistic but I think I broke my stall
wascott replied to MissLiss's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Great information. Thanks for sharing! The nutritionist only wants me to be on Atkins for about 5 weeks total. (The weeks before I go on a two week liquid diet prior to surgery). It was a little rough as my body switched over to ketosis mode. I believe I was exercising too much at the time. I took a two day break from exercise. Now I'm back to an hour plus a day on the treadmill and adding weights to my walking workouts. So far my weight has been dropping nicely. I've already lost the bare minimum required before surgery (5%). My goal is to lose the ideal amount of 10%. I don't expect to lose the next 15 pounds as easily but I'll do my best. If I meet this goal early I think I'll up my carbs a little bit per Atkins phase 2. The induction phase is very restricted on food choices. Good luck with your weight loss journey! -
During surgery, they have you on oxygen. This is through a mask or a nasal cannula. Both administer oxygen in the same way that your Cpap works. Thus, it keeps your airway open in the same way. You are told to bring it to the hospital to use during your stay. BTW, I am a little more than 3 months out, and haven't used my Cpap in about 2 months. My doc is scheduling another sleep study, but believe the apnea has resolved with my weight loss.

Thanks Sherri, Thats encouraging news. I just started my journey to lapland. I went to a seminar at Beth Isreal hospital in Boston Ma on thursday night. Congrats on your weightloss, I saw your weight tracker....WOW! I hope to be were you are soon! Was the whole start up process a drag or did it go pretty smoothly? Do I need to have my primary care physician refer me for the surgery? I have an apointment with her on the 7th. Thanks so much for your reply, this site is really just the encouragment I was looking for. Nicole

Hey Nicole, I'm 5'4 and was 277 pounds. I had aches and pains as well and that definately counts towards the requirements for the surgery. I have to honestly say I don't regret this surgery not even a bit. Its the best decision I've made for myself in a long long time. I'm finally taking time for me. It is work....you can't expect the band to do it all but, you know that's what I like about it. I still have to make the choices it just helps keep me on track. Before...during the holidays I would of gained 10 pounds easy eating all the fudge, Cookies, cakes etc. This year I had some of those things but, I can't eat much of it because of the band plus....I've worked hard so far that I'm not willing to give it back hahaha. It's not always easy and I do go up a few pounds sometimes but, the band keeps me going in the right direction it won't let me give up. I do wish you the best in your journey and please feel free to PM me anytime with any questions you have. I too didn't meet with Dr. Jones or the Bariatric center until I had the referral. What I suggest is that you print out the information located on Beth Israels website for your doctor. Make sure to print out all the info about the surgery, results etc. My doc had no idea the about the surgery and spoke with surgeons at the hospital she is affiliated with. Those surgeons told her to refer me to BIDMC. If your doc knows you well and knows the struggles you've had she/he will help you with this. My doc asked me if I was sure this is what I wanted I told her I've been researching this for a long time, I know it's a tool not a miracle and that I have to work with it in order for it to work. I told her the Bariatric center will make me have a Psych eval, physical, ultrasounds etc to make sure this is for me. She was satisfied with that and gave me the referal. So prepare yourself, educate yourself with all the info and show the doc how excited you are about it. How can he/she say no after that? If he/She does then get another doctor Best of luck! Sherry

Getting pretty nervous..any advice?
Inner Surfer Girl replied to KMichelle88's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Being nervous is very understandable and very common. The pre-op anxiety and uncertainty was the worst part of the whole process for me. The best advice I can give you is to do everything your team asks you to do, even if you think you can't. Be committed to try. Getting up and walking right after surgery will help you feel better sooner. And, sip, sip, sip. Getting in all of your Fluid and Protein will help you heal and lose weight. -

I always found comfort by reading through this section...http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/195065-you-know-you-lost-weight-when/ I could really relate and it reminded me why I was doing this. It is about you, your health and living life abundently. Others can't do that for you, you have to do it yourself. It has been and continues to be a great journey for me. Good luck. -

I am getting my sleeve on Nov 1 and even though I sometimes feel like I should not go thru with it. I am so ready to lose this weight once and for all. I also felt I could do it on my own but how many years have you been trying that?? Way too many!!!! If you made a commitment to do it then obviously you felt that it was what you wanted. I don't think you or I will regret it. Please read thru all of these different posts because you will hear some amazing stories that will give you more confidence in getting it done. Good luck!!! -
I had my surgery in April 06. At that time I had United Healthcare for insurance. They covered my procedure. In September, I started a new job and my new insurance is through Regence. The big issue is.......it looks like I will have to have my port put into my abdominal muscle. Where the port is now is risking erosion because there is no fat to cushion between the port and the abdominal wall. I was looking through my benefits book and it states, in the exclusion section "surgery (including reversals), treatment, programs or supplies intended to result in weight reduction, regardless of diagnosis." What to do? I can't get a straight answer from Regence. And I thought that since my other insurance company did the surgery deed, this wasn't considered a pre-existing condition prior to the new insurance. Regence has covered my office visits for the past two months, so I guess I am really confused. Anyone else have this happen? I suppose I am just gathering information before I really buckle down and figure out what I am going to do. Any insight would really be appreciated.

Are you writing down everything you eat? I am surprised sometimes as to the amount of calories I eat. When I see it on paper it helps me get things in hand. Are you eating the right things. I have to cut my carbs very low and up my Protein to lose weight. And finally, do you exercise? I have to walk an hour EVERYDAY to lose. I have the metabolism of a snail. If I don't exercise I don't lose. My Doc set a goal of 5 pounds a month for me. I wish I could lose more but I think considering my metabolism, it's probably the right number. I've also heard that it's not good to weigh every day but I admit that I do. And do you drink enough Fluid? I think that helps too. Good luck and hang in there. -

so difficult to loose weight
Cocoabean replied to hopeful2 be slim's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One thing with weight loss, your calorie deficit of yesterday does not always equate a loss today. My weight went down in fits and starts. The body seems to want to hold on as much as possible, then will let it go all at once. I'd stay the same for 3 or 4 weeks then drop 4 pounds. I'd go up 1 then down 2, stay the same for 2 weeks then drop 1. It was not steady at all. But over the course of time, the trend was DOWN. That's all that mattered in the long run. Try to only get on the scale once a week. This is really about long-term life style habits. Get used to eating proper portions, the weight loss and better health will come.
