  1. Here's info from the Bariatric Surgery Association: Summary and Recommendations. Substantial comparative and long-term data are now published in the peer-reviewed literature demonstrating durable weight loss, improved medical comorbidities, long-term patient satisfaction, and improved quality of life after SG. The ASMBS therefore recognizes SG as an acceptable option as a primary bariatric procedure and as a first stage procedure in high risk patients as part of a planned staged approach. Based on the current published literature, SG has a risk/benefit profile that lies between the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band and the laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. As with any bariatric procedure, long-term weight regain can occur and, in the case of SG, this could be managed effectively with re-intervention. Informed consent for SG used as a primary procedure should be consistent with consent provided for other bariatric procedures and should include the risk of long-term weight gain. Surgeons performing SG are encouraged to continue to prospectively collect and report outcome data in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.

    June 2013 Sleevers GROUP

Anyone else doing the 2 week preop diet feeling like they are failing? And might fail after surgery? Idk if its all in my mind or what but I just feel like if I have this much trouble staying on liquids now then maybe I will after aswell :-( plus ive been on the preop diet since last Wednesday and havent lost any weight....what the H is up with that crap? This has me worried that maybe my surgeon wont trust that ive done the diet and he will cancel. Im paranoid. They have a 10 lb weight gain rule...I havent gain 10 lbs...so I think im ok....but I havent lost anything either even though ive really tried! Feeling very discouraged.
  3. Hi everyone. I'm a New York girl, transplanted to Florida's Tampa Bay in 2006. I'm 59 years old, divorced, a disabled RN. I've been obese most of my life, and even had an open "stomach stapling" back in the early 1980's, when it was still a new procedure and a very big deal. My surgery took hours. I was in ICU for almost a week afterwards, then in Progressive Care for a few weeks. Finally to a regular room and then home. I was hospitalized altogether for about a month and a half. I lost 160 lbs in just maybe 6 months, but ended up, through the years, gaining it all back. Either my stomach stretched out or the staples let go. So I found myself mostly at 340 lbs most of the time, til I ended up on Prednisone, which caused a massive weight gain; then the insulin I was prescribed to bring down my insane blood sugars caused an additional weight gain. I peaked at 402 lbs, at which time I was unable to bathe or dress myself, take more than a few steps, get out of bed myself, move myself in bed, fit into any of my chairs, fit into my car, or find any position that was not painful. It was a living nightmare. I was already half-way through the procedure to obtain insurance approval. I started a serious low-carb portion controlled diet and stopped both of those meds. I dropped 71 lbs in four months but started putting it back on when I got the call that my surgery was approved. I started the pre-surgery 2 weeks of Optifast and dropped about 35 lbs in 10 days. Then found out my PCP wouldn't give me surgical clearance due to cardiac and renal issues, plus scary anemia. I'm currently drinking over the counter Protein shakes and planning on having a little chicken now and then, waiting for my new surgery date of June 18 to arrive. I've lost 95 lbs since November 2012. Can't wait for the surgery to reach my goal weight and save what's left of my life.

    Not Eating Enough

Actually that is the one thing about which they never specifically stated a time frame... for myself, though, I'm going to hang easy and wait as long as I can... it's tough because I enjoy a drink in the summer months especially. Mrsinto, your old routine for Fridays sounds a lot like ours... we would pick some very rich gourmet recipe and cook it while drinking lots of wine. Same results as you, too... weight gain and fatigue the next day!! I love my red AND white wines but I will be cautious as I don't want to sabotage my efforts... at the same time, I will probably plan some special events like you have.
  5. Hi all, I'm having the surgery done on the 10th. I've gained 5 lbs in about a week/week 1/2. I'm worried that if it's so easy for me to gain weight (I have a friend that is too thin and can't put on weight no matter how hard she tries), will it stay the same after the surgery? Does your body chemistry completely change after? I don't plan on having a feast or anything after But I am concerned I will be able to gain easily like I am now... Has anyone else had this issue too?

    mf vs wls

Every time I joined any kind of "program" (Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, etc.) I did have short-term successes. I lost weight, thought I had fixed myself, and was depressed and saddened to find that not only would I fail to keep the weight off, but it seemed like every blessed bloody pound came back carrying three or four of its closest friends and neighbors who all wanted to take up residence wherever there was room. For me, the roller coaster of emotions and weight loss/weight gain got to be enough already. I know without a doubt--WITHOUT A SHRED OF DOUBT--that if I don't restructure my stomach with WLS, I will never get the upper hand on my weight. Not permanently. Not reliably. Am I nervous about going under the staple gun? Of course. But I've done my research and my surgeon is well-respected and has lots of experience. Am I scared I'll somehow find a way to self-sabotage and fail again? You bet your sweet patootie I am. That's why I'm going through with the sleeve. It has to be out of my hands; I have to surrender control of my food intake until I can reset my headspace to see food as a fuel rather than an emotional outlet or boredom-bandage. As it says above--when WLS is right for you, you will know it. Trust yourself to make the best possible choice. If now isn't the time for you to get sleeved, you can always try MediFast and see how it goes. For me, it would be an exercise in futility, but that doesn't mean it will be that way for you! And if MF lets you down, if the weight comes back (or comes back with friends and neighbors), the sleeve procedure will still be here. I know that once you give yourself time to think about all your options and all the pros and cons, you'll make the choice that will be right for you. Good luck!
  7. LOL! Sitting in a Dr's waiting room embarrassing my bf laughing out loud at this! My BMI is 67. I have "the perfect cocktail for weight gain so I had better get used to life over 300 lbs" as quoted by my gyno. I said ix-nay with a HELL NO!!! I begain in January and it is now June and I still don't have a date (they didn't see Snickers in the x-rays). I am expectin July but only because I developed severe osteo-arthritis jumping through their hoops!
  8. Every week (thanks to my wonderful husband) I go get a massage. It helps my stress, helps me unwind and believe it or not has helped with water weight loss. So you're thinking it's only water weight, well yes it is only water weight but weight is weight. The first day I ever got a massage, I seriously think I peed a river and that is no lie. The next morning I was 5lbs less. I thought maybe this was just something crazy I was imagining but the next time I got a massage the same thing happened. I started researching about massage and weight loss and asked my massage therapist and doctor the same thing "how does massage help with weight loss"? Metabolism is the furnace that keeps your engine running. After a certain age your metabolism can slow down. This sometimes results in weight gain. Regular massage sessions can boost your metabolic rate–jolting it to burn fat faster and help utilize your food intake turning it to energy rather than fat. If you are young, then massage can maintain your fast moving metabolism before it gets sluggish. This does not mean that you do not have to watch your diet but that a combination of healthy food, daily exercise and a weekly massage can be an excellent recipe for losing weight. So now not only is my massage helping me to feel better but its helping me with my weight loss journey also. I got a membership at massage envy which only cost me 39 a week to get a massage so I am helping myself and it helps me to feel great. Most of my pain is gone and I feel wonderful. You owe it to yourself to be your best and to feel your best. Do what makes you happy. But definitely massage has been a wonderful adventure for me.
  9. Three weeks out today and at Friday weigh in I am up 2.5 lbs! Reversing my weight loss from 10 to 7 lbs total since surgery! I have been super good about my puréed diet, protein and vitamins, plus I work on my feet 9 hrs all day. Discouraged, as I was hoping to see at least a 1lb loss/ week ????
  10. welcome, first off your are not alone and your experiences are very similar keep your head up and stay on track, if you get off track get back on track. Most of my weight gains have take place when I stay away from this board.
  11. Has anyone gained weight after a miscarriage? I lost my baby on April 3, and since then, I have gained about 12 pounds. I have been watching my food and going to the gym, but the weight is not budging! It is very frustrating. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome!

    Coffee & Weight Gain Study

Can coffee Cause Weight Gain? By The Daily Meal | Healthy Living Flickr/epSos.deGuess this means we'll be holding off on the daily cups of coffee from now on: A new study published in the Journal of Agricultural and food Chemistry has found that too muchcoffee can increase weight gain and fat cell retention. Researchers at the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research and the University of Western Australia's School of Medicine and Pharmacology examined a compound called chlorogenic acid (CGA), found in coffee. Researchers were hoping that CGAs would specifically increase insulin sensitivity, reduce blood pressure, and decrease body fat thanks to previous research showing that coffee reduced the risk of type-2 diabetes. Unfortunately, the study did just the opposite. Researchers fed CGAs to obese lab mice that were put on a high-fat diet for 12 weeks; the animals were fed enough CGAs to account for six cups of coffee a day. Instead of losing weight, however, the mice gained weight; the results were either the same as feeding mice regular food, or worse. The CGAs "had no beneficial effect on their blood sugar levels and also, a little bit more worrying, the mice on this coffee compound tended to accumulate fat in their liver," University of Western Australia's Kevin Croft told The Age. So the results? Assistant professor Vance Matthews says that three to four cups a day does still decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes, but more than five or six cups a day could reverse the process. In fact, it might actually case an "abnormal retention of fat within cells." No wonder the FDA is worried about crazy kids binging on caffeine. -Jessica Chou, The Daily Meal
  13. Sorry before had but I do need to vent. I have been noticing a 1 lb weight gain almost daily.. I eat right I walk. I drink a lot of Water. I take my Vitamins. I did move to the purred stage. I'm 3 weeks out. My protien isn't that high but its ok. The only thing I can think of is I'm super late on my monthly friend. But that doesn't really get to me cause I've never been regular. Sssso why? What am I doind wrong? The only good thing of all this is that my clothing fits bigger way bigger. So why does the scale go up. Needed to vent..

    Let the commitment begin

Hi Skip, I hear your desperation & I can clearly remember feeling desperate, w/ no choices left yet scared to do the WLS. What if it does not work, what if I gain it back, what if I wreck a perfectly good body part...... Like I said I was at my wits end, I had tried & tried over the years to diet, I'd lose some weight, gain it back & more. I am now 9 months postop & 110 lbs less. I am light on my feet, I go up stairs and am not out of breath. I put my tennis shoes on w/out dreading it. I do not worry about fitting in a chair or walking in a room. I go to support groups, work on my mental addiction, talk honestly with others. I do water aerobics 4 times a week, lift some weights, walk my dog. Summer has arrived, I am now on my bike. The exercise caused me to have consistent weight loss of 10 lbs every month, more in the beginning. The surgery made it possible for me to not give up, I ABSOLUTLY could not eat more than the 1/4 c, them up to a 1/2 cup and I stayed at a 1/2c per meal for a long time and overall I was satisfied. Now I can eat 1c & a little more. I am much much happier but I still have the same personality, I can get depressed for no good reason, I overdo it & become exhausted (but I had a lot of fun before I got exhausted). I do real well w/ my liquid & protein most of the time. Vitamins too. This is my story of commitment so far with this surgery, without this my story would be my old story, I tried, I got too hungry, I ate, I gave up. My doctor told me I was not a loser, he says we just get too hungry & it takes too long without this surgery. God Speed to YOU, your doctor & your wife. Your life is going to change, follow ALL the rules!!!!!
  15. I experience a four or five pound variation day-to-day, and that is taking my weight first thing in the morning and just before bed. Just watch the new "lows." They are a better indicator of where you are heading. So long as you see a new low weight over a period of time, you can be pretty confident that you are losing. Temporary water weight gain is common. Just taking a shower will leave me with extra weight until the skin dries out.

    Gallbladder!

There is no relationship between GB removal and weight gain. The gall bladder stores bile which helps in digestion. When removed, bile is still produced (in the liver), just the storage (and the place where stones are formed) is gone. There is a LOT of good web info on GB function and disease!

    The look

Sometimes people who are jealous or wish they were losing weight tend to say something semi-spiteful because they are not losing and so the fact that you losing, no matter how fast or slow, is still losing. Smile when you tell them how much you have lost and be proud of your success. If you are anything like me before surgery there was no weight loss or if there was there was a weight gain that went along with it.
  18. I'm a RN, I think you have been misinformed. This medication will probably help in your weight loss efforts! Untreated hypothyroidism leads to weight gain in many people and once people start the medication weight loss is likely!
  19. Go back to your doc and get renewed/reenergized. You have come so far don't let the weight come back. Let the doc check your levels there could be a reason for the weight gain. Stop the sugar. I know it's easy to say, but start removing it slowly. Go to sugar free items until you can say enough! I'm only 9 weeks and I think about it daily I have to chance the way I eat so there are just certain things I will not eat and that's just how it is. I'm sure it will get harder as I advance, but you can still do this. You have done the hard part and confessed, Now go to work!!!!
  20. Many gals on here are hopeful that breast feeding will help get the weight off. My personal experience... And this could be more due to my boobs being deformed and incapable of making enough milk... But bf made me more hungry and my ppd from not making enough milk along with my metabolism slowing down from no longer working at my active job... It was a horrible combination for me. I gained 60 of the 100 I lost by the time she was 5 months. I have NOT been sleeved so I am not speaking from this spectrum. I am lurking here cuz I'm contemplating having a baby before surgery or waiting till after goal weight post surgery. I'm having a really hard time deciding now after reading these posts. I was leaning toward surgery first but I'd hate to go through weight gain again and what I've read so far has me a lil worried... You gals are doing amazing though! Not sure I would though... Ack!

    First full day home

I'm writing this entry a bit early today. It's my first full day at home. I attached a screenshot of my MyFitnessPal progress for the day. I'm using MFP to ensure I'm getting all the protein I need while staying under the sugars and fats for the day. I didn't sleep well at all last night. I'm hoping that the sleep gets better. I was able to get a few hours of sleep in from 2 to 5 am this morning before I finally got up. I didn't end up following the food schedule I wanted to today. Mainly because my sleep was all messed up. I'll try again tomorrow. I took all the meds and my multi-vitamin I was supposed to take and had a BM finally. I was worried about not having one. I had a little bit of help though, because I took a suppository. One of the food suggestions during this phase for me is cream of wheat with a scoop of protein powder. I use chocolate light muscle milk to mix in and it tastes so good! My worry is that I don't have the ability to feel full yet so I'm eating it very slowly. Cream of wheat changes its texture very quickly to hard and dry once it's out too long. So I got two good bites in before it got hard and I couldn't eat anymore. Anyone with any suggestions would be nice. It's one only thicker consistency things I can eat right now and the taste is so lovely. For dinner I decided to try some fat-free yogurt with the unflavored Unjury protein powder. I found is that once I mix the powder in to the yogurt, the yogurt is a little too watery. Probably the temperature causing that. And though it says it's unflavored, I could still taste there was something different about the yogurt. It's sort of the same reason I don't do those unflavored mix ins for fiber or drink miralax in water. I can always taste the change and it makes me not want to finish whatever it is I'm eating. I decided to try out one of the trazodones that I had left over from last year when I stopped taking them to see if I could sleep this afternoon. I took a 50 mg tablet and it worked almost instantly. I slept for a little over 3.5 hours. Waking back up felt so nice. My best friend made dinner for the family today. Spaghetti with italian sausage and some garlic bread. I snuck a small bit of the garlic bread and immediately felt icky. I chewed it up until the point where there was hardly anything in my mouth and swallowed. Then for about 10 minutes I felt like it was lodged inside my esophagus. That was a stupid move, one I won't make again. I had 76 grams of protein today from the small amount of muscle milk I had in my cream of wheat, premium protein chocolate shakes - I had two to make up for not eating much at breakfast, and the unjury protein packet for dinner with my yogurt. I'm getting tired of the current set of meal choices. I'll have to change some things up tomorrow to keep things interesting. My mood today started on the sad side. But after waking up from my nap this afternoon I felt a little better. I need to get a little bit of walking in tonight before it gets much darker. I weighed myself and I'm close to losing all of the water weight gain from my time in the hospital. I peed so frequently yesterday that I dropped 6 pounds from morning until about 5pm. By tomorrow morning I should be back to my weight I was at before going into surgery.
  22. So...I was on vacation last week and was so happy to not just fit into the seat on the plane, but I didn't need the belt extender and I had no problem buckling the belt (I even had to tighten it a little!). Then, I had no problem putting down the armrest. For the first time in years, It wasn't tight, it wasn't riding up on my hip, it just went down...and stayed there. Oh glory!! I didn't eat or drink anything other than Water but I just had to bring the tray down...and again...it went down and stayed there. I didn't have to move my belly out of the way, I didn't have to worry it wouldn't go down... Oh the happiness of the ordinary!! I'm even OK with the 1/2 lb. weight gain. I was very aware of portions and did well in that regard but we ate out alot and I know I ate items that were higher in sodium than I usually eat at home so I expect it's probably water weight. I don't care right now...I was like a regular person on the flight and that is so satisfying.
  23. I would say, what finally did it for me, was having added two new medications, or constantly switching the medications I was on. I had always been a big guy. My freshman year in high school, I weighed 315. I had some issues that happened before then, that I am told is probably what really caused my weight gain, but the final thing that did it for me, was getting put on diabetes medication. Being told I was borderline diabetic. My mom is a diabetic, and has infections all the time because of it, and has been in the hospital several times. That is not something I want to go through. I also had a fatty liver, sleep apnea, High BP, and so on. So, I just got tired of sleeping at night, and waking up tired, and do not feel like taking a whole bunch of medications. Once I was told I needed pills for diabetes, I decided, that was enough. So far, only 6 weeks post op, I no longer snore, my sleep apnea is gone, and I am off almost all my medications. Most of my goals are accompished. I am not signed up for 2 5k runs in October and a Mud run in December. Something I would have never thought I would do.
  24. Never been a big eater. Once a day. Which is where my weight gain comes into play. I haven't eaten a thing and I know if I was told I could I wouldn't be able to. I DO however have hunger pains and its annoying me. I know my body has calories stored and I'm not dying.
