This 100% I also think many people still think of the experiences of bariatric patients from a long time ago when people did not know at all that they needed to take vitamins to help avoid some of those issues. I have even met a few medical professionals (!) that are still entrenched in old ideas about dental outcomes based on ancient data and poor post surgery nutition routines. Kinda sad... Some bariatric patients will have tooth issues, some won't, and the variables in determining where one person falls are multitude. Teeth are not all created equal, bariatric patient or not. Some people will experience more issues than others simply due to what they started out with. The best a person can do is what any non- bariatric patient would do. Control the variables one can, (vitamins, checkups etc.) and get prompt care to deal with the rest. Try not to worry.

Why did I not know that bariatric patients had issues with their teeth? Is this common? Sent from my SM-G970U using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm a bit late to the party, but welcome to the site! Catching a cold or the flu before surgery has been one of my concerns too. Have you talked with your nurse? I have my bariatric nurse already assigned and she is walking me through all the stages I need to get through. She'd be the first one I'd ask about a cold, or allergies, or anything like that. Best of luck and congrats on getting your surgery date!!!!!

I’ll be moving onto my stage/phase 3 soft food diet soon I noticed a lot of “bariatric recipes” use low fat cream cheese, wanted to know if anyone eats it and doesn’t or does have a problem with it?

Congratulations on your surgery, glad you are healing well. I’m five years out and bounced back quickly with no complications. My pain was managed with medication. I had prior surgeries and experienced giving birth. I had a good reference to pain. My pain was minimal in comparison This site is not a good representation of statistics on positive/negative experiences with bariatric surgery. You don’t see the posts on positive experiences. Most don’t feel the need. You will see many posts from people with complications because they are here for support . -
I love these from Bariatric Pal Store. I slap them on a plate on the scale and weigh things into them. I still eat with a cocktail fork and a demitasse spoon on a tiny appetizer plate or saucer. https://store.bariatricpal.com/products/portionmate-meal-portion-control-rings-and-nutrition-tool

My nutritionist is part of Smart Shape weight loss centers in canada. Specifically for bariatric surgery. Vsg, mini gastric bypass, lap band, and revision surgeries. I would hope she would know.... but I am not so confident. Everyone says follow the plan your dr has you on...... what if you dont want to? I paid almost 20 grand out of pocket to have this surgery....I dont want to fail Sent from my SM-G965W using BariatricPal mobile app

Nervous about revision
JRT Mom replied to KadieEuropeBound's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
KadieEuropeBound, you look great! I can only hope to look half as good as you do after my band to bypass! You look young and that is in your favor right now for long term PPI usage. But there has been a lot of studies that suggests long term PPI usage can contribute to osteoporosis, and since many of us *ahem* more mature bariatric people have trouble getting enough calcium in their diet we might be already be prone to osteoporosis to the PPI use could be troublesome. -
Hi everyone! Just started my pre op diet today. So far it hasn't been too bad but then again I was off work since I had to get my upper endoscopy procedure. I got a bunch of boxes of bariatric soups, gelatin, pudding, unflavored protein collagen peptides, two different flavors for my protein shakes, protein drink mixes, etc. Now planning for my stock for clear liquids after the surgery. Any advice is appreciated! My surgery is next Friday the 18th... And ahhhh my birthday is tomorrow, so birthday creamy tomato soup for me!!!

Lap-Band to Bypass Revision w/Insurance
JohnnyMadison replied to Lauren87's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yes, I am in Madison and getting revision done at UW! I was scheduled 11/11 but am selling old house on 11/1 and closing on new house on 12/2 and didn't want to do it while living in in a corporate apartment, nor did I want to move into new house with possible post-op restrictions. So I rescheduled to 12/16. The code on my pre-authorization paperwork for the procedure is just for RNY. It doesn't list revision and when I look up the CPT it just describes the procedure. So perhaps revision is a modifier to the original code so that's why no language about it. With your plan if you meet the requirements it looks pretty good. My plan had a comorbidity requirement but I also didn't meet the 35 or 30 BMI so maybe that's why they did it as a non-bariatric reason, even though I am obviously a bariatric patient. Good luck! I am going through Dr. Greenberg. The facility is just a few miles from both of my houses so I am grateful for all that. I had my original VSG done in Mexico because work didn't have WLS coverage at the time. All of the pre-op nutritional sessions and all that are annoying but at least I don't have to do the supervised diet like most of the people having surgery in my groups. Being on a restricted diet with my original stomach was torture. It is much easier for me with a sleeve and ironically I don't have to do it. -
Lap-Band to Bypass Revision w/Insurance
Lauren87 replied to Lauren87's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks, JohnnyMadison and SorryNameTaken! This is going to be an interesting journey--since my last post, the certificate of medical coverage came out for our plans (local government employee, uniform benefits... a blessing and curse!) and they are covering bariatric surgery and the only requirement is to have a BMI over 35 and to be considered medically necessary. So, this is either going to be really easy or really hard, but I won't know what kind of approach we're taking until I can start the program. There is no language in there regarding revisions, which does give me a pause, but if I meet the requirements and they prior-authorize the work, then I assume we're good to go. That's what I'm hoping, anyway. P.S. JohnnyMadison, nice to see another Wisconsinite present--I presume you're also in Madison? Small world? Did you go through UW for your revision? I have only heard positive things! -
My question is how are your families reacting to your decision to have WLS? Mine is currently in the denial phase. Doesn't want me to have it, says I'm too old, too out of shape, etc. He's afraid I think of me croaking on the table. I've started pulling articles about how safe the surgery is now and that it can be done into someone's 70s now. My surgeon will only go up to age 60 and I'm 55. I've researched the surgeries for the last decade and gone back and forth and been anti'd more than once by other people. This time, I'm doing it for my own self health. I'm afraid to tell anyone else because of the anti-surgery messages I got the last time a few years ago when I started the process. That's when I found Bariatric Pal. What a great forum this is! Anyway, I got sidetracked. Any advice in how to raise your family's support of your decision?

This is what my stomach looked like after the bypass
SorryNameTaken replied to chula313's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Looks yummy, like a nice bariatric buffet! My scars from my band aren't too bad anymore, but that was over 11 years ago. The only one that is still really visible is the one where they put the port in, it's about 2 to 2.5 inches long and still somewhat purple. You won't have to deal with that though! Other than that, there's one other scar still noticeable, but it's flesh-colored, it just looks like a different texture than the rest of my skin. I didn't use any scar fading cream, but a lot of people have great success with them if that's something you are worried about 😃 Thanks for sharing! -

Nervous about revision
mlbdl replied to KadieEuropeBound's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I’m interested to know what you decided and how you are doing. I’m revising sleeve to bypass in November for GERD. I am aspirating acid into my lungs, so it has to be done. I’m on 2 GERD meds, I eat tums like candy, and 4 allergy meds for allergy symptoms (for instance, coughing up acid into my lungs) that the 2 Bariatric surgeons, ENT, and allergist all have concluded are made worse, if not mostly caused by, the GERD. -

And I got one from my Bariatric Dietician at the Ohio State University- WEXNER Medical Center. Asked Roy why it was on the Reverse of his Business Card? He just chuckled and said " If the resturant or in Your case- the Handsome Dude dressed in Blue- they can call him and he will re- state it personally. I don't fear being catorgorized as DRUGGIE as much as my appearance of failure to thrive/ starvation- after all I AM one- half the size of my ID picture, even if I put down 250 I was really pushing 350 at THAT TIME- ho- hum I need to renew it the Day after Christmas, yes my Commonwealth friends -Boxing Day- the difference This Year I am the size of a Small envelope instead of the Parish PoorBox- zippety do dah for ME! -

ge junction with mucosal tear during balloon dilation?
Darktowerdream replied to Darktowerdream's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@Frustr8 thank you. I wasn’t sure if I was going to say anything else on the forum. Or if I will continue coming here. Self evaluation is hard, if I did right now I couldn’t deal with it. I’m not sure I really know even myself so I know no one else can understand. I can’t seem to say things the way people want to hear them. People say they don’t expect anything of you even when they do, but they don’t expect anything for you. What do they care as long as they have what they need for themselves? I can’t explain it. You can do things to help someone else without them saying what they need but then they expect you to detail or even beg for the smallest of things. So I basically go it alone. The only exception being a ride to the doctor or errands or help with a phone call. Im saying everything wrong. It’s not as if I expect anything from anyone but sometimes you just want things straightforward and not a convoluted mess. Sometimes you want some semblance of normalcy and not always feeling like nothing is in your control. I went for pre op testing today for surgery Monday. Separate from these issues but has to be dealt with. I tried to post about this on another subject (menopause and Bariatric surgery) but feel like it was just seen as an annoyance and I want to remove it but they don’t let you do that here. No I didn’t ask a direct question. I can’t always if ever find the words anymore. So I guess I’m better of saying nothing. -
February 2019 weight loss buds
Sheribear68 replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Okay so I had breast cancer 10 years ago and after all of my treatments (chemo and radiation for 11 months) I was approved for reduction surgery. In one day I went from a G cup down to a skinny C cup and that was when I was still in the 240’s. I think they removed over 7 pounds of boobs. It was ridiculous. Waking up from that surgery was NO JOKE. Even though it was seriously the single most pain I’ve ever been in, it was totally worth it. One reason why bariatric surgery didn’t concern me too much was that I’d survived one of the more painful surgeries you can have. For the last 9 years I’ve really enjoyed my much smaller girls, but now that I’ve lost over 100 pounds, they’re all but disappearing. Maybe I’m slightly worried that eventually I’ll have zero boobs, but I love it. I buy padded bras if an outfit needs it and that’s that. -
3 weeks post op down only 10 lbs
catwoman7 replied to Dee2938's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
P.S. just wanted to add that I lost 16 lbs the first month, and I started off at way over 300 lbs. People lose at all different rates depending on a bunch of different factors. Your relatively low BMI (low compared to most bariatric patients) is one of those factors. and I stalled weeks 2 &3 - no loss at all. It was just the infamous "three-week stall". My weight loss started up again during week 4.
