  1. This is my first post here so I'm a total newbie! I wondered if anyone with Aetna can tell me their experience with getting Aetna to approve their surgery with just a 40 BMI, no co-morbidities, & not having a history of a persistent severe obesity? I currently have a BMI of 38 and haven't been to a consultation yet. I spoke with the nurse at the office I'm wanting surgery & she hinted that it might be worth it for me to gain 15lbs so that Aetna will cover the surgery & I don't have to self pay. I wouldn't have a medical history of being at a 40 BMI at all. Most of my history would have me at 35-38. Do you think that would work & be worth gaining the weight? Does the insurance just go through if you are at the 40 mark? I couldn't get many answers from Aetna when I called other than to reference their policy #0157 bulletin. Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!
  2. I think the reality is somewhat between the two scenarios. In an *ideal* world we'd all eat completely sensibly and never have pain. But all of us who have developed severe enough weight problems to warrant surgery are bound to struggle with the boundaries at times and will feel the pain of overdoing things. it will happen. Negative reinforcement is a big part of why the band worksn - but its certainly not the whole point of the band which is indeed to make you feel fuller faster. The trick is to avoid it for the most part.

Today I am at 264 I had a fill last week on Dec. 14th and have a little restriction I have not lost any weight and I went to the gym 4 times last week. My man thing is just that I want to be successful in my whole journey in a year from now I want to see a dramitic difference. I know I need to drink more water and stop eating things I am not suspose to eat I need to figure out a eating plan that works for me. I know I can do this and I am. TO GOD BE THE GLORY.

    Goal Weight

Anyone else who wants this, until I can get the calculator hosted (i.e., as soon as my lazy ass son wakes up), I need the following: 1. Current weight 2. Current body fat percentage 3. Desired body fat percentage

    Ladies Questions -

Oh, honey, I wish I could tell you 'yeah, you'll be great'.. Sadly, I can't. My periods have been ALL OVER THE BLOODY SHOW! Literally! There is no rhyme, no reason. They have lasted (3 of them in the last 6.5 months), over 17 days. I do suffer from PCOS and despite being on tablets that are supposed to stop my monthlies - they just keep on comin'! Apparently its to do with all the hormones flooding your system when you start shedding weight. (Hormones get trapped in fat cells) I would say if your monthlies are normal, prior to surgery, expect a little upset as your body adjusts. Prolly a couple of months or so. After that, you'll no doubt be groovy. What I would say though, just be a bit prepared for things to go a little haywire for a while. I, personally, feel I should buy some shares in lil-lets tampons. I've floated the bloody company single-handedly for the past 6 months

    STEROIDS....GRRRRR....

I take medicine for psoriasis. I am 2 weeks post op. 1 week post op I took my new injection, Cimzia and I had a severe allergic reaction and went to the hospital. I had 3 IVs and prednisone. I gained 5 pounds over night. Only today, 6 days later have I FINALLY reached the pre-weight of the allergic incident. It sucks. Get through it and move on. You'll lose it hopefully in a week.
  7. I am desperate. I really would like advice and information from those of you who tried extensive dieting without success and then experience success with sleeve surgery. I have been on diets and restrictive eating plans for seemingly ever! I had the adjustable gastric band for about 10 years which did nothing. I eat extremely healthy foods and have been on diets with restricting grains, dairy etc. for a long time. And on average I eat around 1200 to 1600 calories per day. And I exercise a lot. But it's impossible to lose weight. Have any of you had long periods of time with moderate calories, and eating healthy without losing any weight? So, it looks like it's time for me to consider the sleeve. Have any of you had the experience of dieting with restricted calories to about the 1200 to 1600 range prior to the sleeve without weight loss, and then having the sleeve and experiencing success with weight loss? It seems that the goal for calories is around 800 calories for weight loss, with the sleeve? Is it possible to maintain good nutritional status or get all of the nutrition needed with only 800 or 1000 calories per day long term? I am just so tired of years of dieting, restriction, being hungry, watching what I am eating, and just not losing weight. There just doesn't seem to be a way that dieting can work. So maybe sleeve surgery is the only alternative. I don't feel that I over eat and I always was under the impression that surgery was for people who could not control their overeating. But maybe I am wrong. Maybe the surgery is so that it is possible to eat well under the average number of calories per day. So, just wondering how many of you were never able to lose with extensive dieting and exercise but have now lost with sleeve surgery?
  8. I just decided last week to get the sleeve. I was going in for a band removal (slippage), get GERD fixed, and removal of gallbladder; but recently was told I'm diabetic. I've been pre diabetic for a year, but the crap hit the fan a month ago! My bariatric doc told me 2 years ago that if I had not lost a significant amount of weight, I should consider the sleeve. The diabetes diagnosis threw me for a loop, and I figured since they are already in there, now is the time! I lost 49 lbs with the band, but I would have done it without. It worked great for a year, but then I busted my butt to lose more and keep it up! I've been obese my entire life! I'll be 50 next year, and I'm so tired all the time! I have IgA Nephropathy (kidney) that makes me exhausted all the time. I have to drop this weight if I am going to have a chance at life! I cannot remember the last time I was under 300lbs! When I hit the 200s, I'll be the happiest ever!!! I'm 323 now, hoping the sleeve will give me the push needed to lose weight for my health! Good Luck Everyone!
  9. I am 5 weeks post-op. @@Hertsukfem31 It sounds like from what you are saying, "I'm suddenly yo-yoing between 224-226 for the past week," that you are weighing yourself every day. I don't think you are in a stall. When you start eating solid food your weight, for some reason starts to slow down. You will probably start losing 2-3 pounds per week for a couple of weeks. I would suggest you get your Protein up to 70 mg or higher.
  10. Hello all. I'm new to the group. I stumbled across this site via a google search and knew this is just what I needed. I've thought about WLS for the past couple years but always let others talk me out of it (people who have no weight issues and certainly couldn't understand what I go through). Well I'm tired of being tired and tired of being unhappy and feeling like I have no control over my life. I'm scheduled for my 1st seminar this Saturday and hope all goes well because I am super excited to get back to me. I live in the Chicago, IL area and have Cigna insurance. So if anyone out there has any tips, suggestions, etc. I can sure use it. I have read so many encouraging remarks and stories on this site and I know this is where I need to be. Looking forward to future posts

Wow a mile! That is great. You are so far ahead of where I was at. You are really dedicated. Can't wait to see your weight progress.
  12. I had my surgery in Aug 2005 and to date I have lost only 71 lbs. I'm so disappointed.:think I honestly haven't been consistent in seeing my surgeon on a regular basis because I live far from her office but I just fiund out that one of her associates sees patients in an office closer to where I live so I do have an appt in two weeks. I have two relatives who had WLS and have lost so much more weight than me. One had Gastric Bypass before I had LapBand and the other had LapBand after I did. They both look great and here I am with still about 130 lbs. still to lose. I know that I don't always eat the right foods but sometimes I can get so little down (my fill is 3.4) that rather than try to eat and end up throwing it up I eat ice cream or cookies or some other food that isn't good for me. I knew that I would have to work at this but I honestly didn't think I would have to work so hard. I really did think that just be eating less the weight would come off. Is anyone else experiencing this problem or can anyone give me some encouragement. I would really appreciate your comments. Thanks.:help:

No weight loss weeks 5-9 post op

Revision patients may lose weight a at a slightly slower rate than those who have virgin first-time sleeves. However, bariatric surgeons don't always inform prospective patients of this potential reality to avoid discouraging them. Slower weight loss often happens to revision patients because they've already experienced the metabolic shock of a previous bariatric surgical procedure. Per the Texas Bariatric Specialists website: http://texasbariatricspecialists.com/failed-weight-loss-surgery-revisions/
  14. I had my band to sleeve revision on June 22nd. I lost 23 pounds as of July19th, but for 4 weeks now I have lost and gained the same 4 pounds. I walk more than I did before and I am down 45 pounds since June 1 when I started the preppy diet. I upped my calories to about 900-1100 per day from 500 or so a few weeks ago hoping it would help. I eat 65ish grams of protein 30-50 carbs and drink lots of water. I know it just under 3 months I am still down 45 pounds, but a month with no weight lost is concerning me. I feel like I didn't pay nearly $20,000 to lose 45 pounds, especially when I paid $13,000 for my band 5 years ago. My insurance won't cover anything, labs, nutritionalist or anything considered related to my surgery, so I have only been twice to the nutritionalist. But I feel like I am following the guidelines. Anyone else have an experience like This? How can o start losing again?

  16. Hello everyone - I have my first appointment with the surgeon (Prof. Lansberg) on the 6th of October. Things are a little diffrent here, once your GP refers you to the surgeon you are pretty much done. So, I could be having surgery sometime in the very near future. I am very nervous about some of the procedures. I am wanting the lap band, but he will tell me what he thinks is best for me. I have been over weight most of my life and am ready for a big change. Just wondering what are good questions for the surgeon? Thanks, Heather

    Question for sleevers

That is unfortunate , sorry so many obstacles are in your path. If I was in your place I would keep it bare bones because you've got enough going on. Go right back to basics, advance slowly through the stages Minimum of 60g protein, 64 oz water, minimum of 30 minutes between eating and drinking, drinking and eating Avoid all added sugars and minimalize the consumption simple carbs (less than 50g daily) Strive to always eat proteins first then vegetables Hydration is crucial to weight loss Fiber is crucial to weight loss Vitamins are crucial to your lifestyle Track and stay accountable (pulled these tips from a handouts from support group, the topic was battling regain) Safe journey PS bug the temp NUT anyway. You are important too and the squeaky wheel gets the oil...
  21. Hi everyone. I am behind on getting myself involved with the forums but I figure doing it now is better than after my surgery. I guess I'll just go into my story. I have been big most of my life. I'm 6'3" tall, have been since I was 15. Back then I weighed around 200 lbs and was one of the bigger people in my hometown. I joined the Army after high school, actually put on 25 pounds of muscle, but I was in great shape. Got out of the Army, got lazy and the weight ballooned. I am currently at 415lbs, when I first starting meeting with my surgeon and nutritionist I was at 458, he made me lose 40 lbs before giving me a surgery date. I'm getting sleeved on Feb. 18 and I'm nervously excited about it. I have a tremendous support system consisting of my wife (who is the reason I'm on the forum, she's a research nut and thought this might help me with questions) and kids. So that's me, all set to start the next stage of my weight loss journey. Thanks for taking the time to read this and sorry for typing your eyes crossed.

    BCBS "blue hospital cert" ??

Hi Dee, I also have BCBS and I went though True Results but the insurance would not pay if i had it done at the clinic. They require me to stay over night. So True Results found one of their doctors that was on my network and assigned me to him. And one of the hospitals that was also on my network was one that they use, so it all worked out to my benefit b/c the ins. payed 90% of the doctor, 90% of the anesthesiologist, and 80% of the doctor. I payed pennies compared to other people. I still did my monthly weigh in's and eveything else at the True Results clinic. And don't worry about the 6 months of dieting. I actually gained a little weight. I didn't do a thing. I ate normal, sometimes a little more , walked a little, and did all the stuff they told me to do, like see the nutrionalist, weight history from family doctor, mental exam, etc.. I thought it was going to take forever, but it was over before i knew it and the ins. only took a week and a half to approve me. I am now 4 days post-op(May 29th) and glad i had the time to prepare. It helped having the time to set my mind to the changes that would happen and how my eating habits would change. Now that it is all done, I don't feel like i rushed into it. It will all work out, just be patient and do what they tell you to do and it will all pay off. Keep us posted. Stephanie
