    Just banded

I was banded on Friday 10-12 and had gas for 4 days--thats it! I was so scared because I read a lot of people on here saying how bad the gas was and how long it might last--I read upto 4 weeks. Clearly this is a support group and the people that have little or no gas don't post messages saying "GUESS WHAT? I HAVE NO GAS!" probably because they would be stoned to death by a mob of bloated banders. So, you might read a lot of problems people are having because they here for help and support. Everyone is different. I walk and took gas x strips and it's gone. Good luck!

    Soup with no starch?

Well yeah, I could do that but does that count? I mean, it could still have some tiny bits of starch left in it. 10 days pre op I'm supposed to eliminate starch. UGH this is already getting hard and I have barely started!
  3. Got the sleeve 10/18. So far things are going well. Just wondering if any else has experienced or know what it means when your stomach makes crazy noises. Not hunger growls but just noises. it's hard to explain. Also, hurts a little but not bad. More just uncomfortable.

    how do i do this?

im 27 years old and 160 pounds over my ideal weight for my height. :rolleyes2: ive never seen a nutritionist but have had doctors for the last 10 years or so telling me that i NEED to lose weight. ive done what feels like every diet/program under the sun coupled with light exercise (i have TERRIBLE knees). i lost weight but gained it back and then some! what do i need to do to get approved for a band? im so confused as to what the process is! my hubby is in the Air Force and we have Tricare Prime. i only have my extra weight, no co-morbidities (that i know of!). does Tricare cover everything, including fills and the pre-surgery diet that im reading about? or only the procedure itself? or only part of the procedure? i have no idea what im doing. :hurray: any help/advice is very greatly appreciated!
  5. I don't even have a surgery date yet, but they've taken the weight they are going to submit to ins, so I can start trying to lose now. I probably won't lose much, but I've heard you can drop 10-20lbs in the 2 week pre op diet alone. I think I'm going to set a goal of 20lbs pre op weight loss. My surgery will most likely be in a month, maybe/hopefully a tiny bit less. Sound unrealistic?

    One Year Out

One year gone and took 87 pounds with it. Yupeee!!! I'm happy and sad. Happy that I feel good and have not had any complications. I feel energized with alot more self esteem and do feel like my life is in a new phase. Sad, because my goal was to loose 100 pounds in one year. It's getting much more harder now. I've caugt myself going into old bad habits. I feel like my body continues to fight me. Hunger is also against me. It's harder to loose the pounds. I stay in a range of 10 pounds. Loose 4 one week then two weeks later those same 4 or 5 are back. I have now decided to take things to another level. I enjoy walking and have put some jogging into my excercise. But feel I need the advice and encouragement of a physcial trainer. I have now looked into that and plan on starting soon. Mentally, there's been alot of confusion and alot of emotions. There's alot of ups and downs. Alot of my history has come out, for some reason. I need to continue seeing my pyschologist, who had previously warned me that many things in my head would awaken and I would have to face them. I trust that with his help and GODs presence I will work thru this. :smile2:

    Post-Op Update

I'm 10 days post op and feel better than I did 10 days pre-op. Seriously, it gets much better. As far as the shots go, I feel your pain. I was giving myself multiple injections daily for infertility. My whole body looked like a poka dot! Hang in there, you can do this!

    Welbutrion/buprion and buspiron

I take the twice a day wellbutrin, it's the only anti depressant that has worked for me and also not increased my appetite. Only side effects I have are sweating, dry mouth and if I take the second one too early insomnia, otherwise it's fine. I cannot take the once a day wellbutrin because then I can't sleep at all. I've been taking it on and off for 10 years or more. Hope this helps.
  12. Surgery went great! I felt excellent afterwards. Starting weight on surgery day was 178. Down 10 pounds. I can only take sips of Water and a tad of Protein water. It doesn't sit well if I were to gulp and if I do get too much liquid in my mouth I have to spit it out in another cup. This is something that will take time. I'm still happy I did this.
  13. I can't believe how good I feel. I was up and walking the evening after surgery and only took two doses of the heavy pain killers. I was released from the hospital yesterday and but for a bit of grogginess... I'm doing great now at home. I've been doing my walking, drinking my water and protein drinks. Tonight I liquefied some soup and had a few sips of that. But I cannot believe how good this is going so far. It's hard not to think the other shoe will drop... But has anyone else had an easy go of surgery and post op?
  14. Hi All, I've read on the board about people being on a liquid diet for 10 days or more pre-op, and am wondering if this is accurate? I am scheduled for Surgery on January 11th and my doctor is saying with my BMI I only need to be on liquids for 3-4 days. I just was wondering if anyone knows why the difference? :help: Lori

Struggling - How do you do it!?!?!

Unfortunately, you have to make the time .. even for 10 minutes. Instead of going to the gym, why not workout at home using your bodyweight using supersets - exercises like the squat, burpees, spiderman pushups are great for the body. Or try the outdoors. But try to get your nutrition in order first - this will account for over 80% of your fat loss. Here's an article to read up on - Natural Ways to Boost Metabolism

    Seeing is Believing

Thank you so much for understanding everybody!! I am getting ready start the travel journey that will take me home for surgery and journey it is; four planes, maybe a helicopter, buses, and four days straight of travel. Once I get there I am going to fall into my Mother's arms, take a deep breath, and focus on getting myself into the right mental, emotional, and psychological space to prepare for this leap for which I have assiduously prepared. Total weight I hope to drop from surgery to goal, 160 pounds, but I think that first 10 pounds is going to mean a whole lot.
  17. One night during my vacation it was very chilly outside and I hadn't brought along a coat, only a zip up sweater that was being laundered at the moment. My husband brought along two jackets, a lightweight one and a heavier leather one. He saw that I was freezing, and knew that I didn't have a jacket with me so he suggested that I wear his (size XL men's jacket). I told him that I was fine (because I didn't want to be embarrassed putting on his jacket only to find out that it was too tight). Finally though, I couldn't take the cold any longer and I gave in. Not expecting it to fit, I slipped my arms in, and not only did the jacket slide right on, but there was room to zip it and even cross my arms if I wanted to. This was definately not possible 74lbs ago!!! I was truely thrilled that it fit, and I could see the surprise in my husband's face as well! Also, I was very surprised to come home after my 10 day vacation to discover that I'd lost 6lbs despite the lovely Mexican pastries and quesadillas!!!

FLMA How/When to notify your employer

I requested the FMLA paperwork from HR as soon as I knew my surgery date. This gave me about 3.5 weeks to get everything approved. I am taking at least 4 weeks off. Tomorrow I will be 10 days into my leave. I can go up to 6 weeks and continue to be paid, but I would like to save some PTO time in case I need it for something fun. :-)
  19. do your research also. it all depends on your willpower and your journey. i started at 303 when i started this journey, my highest was 340. i also was told about 75% of my excess. that would have put me at 118 loss to my dr. goal of being 145. my personal goal is 135. if i make it to 150 heck i will be happy. right now i am sitting at 129.4 loss.. over 10 pounds more than my 75% goal or 82% currently. i just hit my second stall (well it broke on Sunday) so i am losing again... i had the sleeve.. I am happy with what i had and i chose the sleeve because i had no other co morbidities other than the weight. Bypass reroutes your inside, and the sleeve removes some of it, but the organs stay in the same place lol.. it is all personal choice. I wanted my organs to stay in the same place, plus lets be real. I was self pay and the sleeve is half the cost of the bypass.

  23. Some people undergo WLS and lose significant weight only to gain some or all of it back years later. I asked my nutricianist "Why". Her response was grazing. Grazing is to eat small portions of food, as appetizers or the like, in place of a full-sized meal or to snack during the course of the day in place of regular meals. A recent study by University of California, Berkeley, may have found a correlation between sleep and body mass index (BMI). Breakfast and breakfast skipping is associated with weight gain.” This study seems to go hand-in-hand with another study. Another recent study found that reducing the eating window (the hours per day that one eats) reduces weight. http://acsh.org/2015/09/picture-this-a-food-app-that-could-improve-public-health/ The results from this study published in Cell Metabolism showed that the majority eat over a 15-hour period each day. Some research suggests that limiting the “eating window” to 10-12 hours per day may contribute to weight loss. Their sample size was small, but of their volunteers interested in weight loss researchers set the smart phone app to help them restrict food intake to a 10-hour window. Without changing the types of food they were eating over 13 weeks, this volunteer group lost an average of 3.5 percent of their initial weight per person. So it appears that to maintain the weight loss after you reach the Maintenance stage, one needs to control "Grazing". This includes limiting your "eating window" to around 10-12 hours per day and getting the nominal 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
  24. I was just banded on 03-25-10, and Im still trying to get used to everything. I was very confused about what I should or should not be eating at first, and I kind of got off track by eating soft foods too early, so now Im backtracking so I can do this right. I sooo want this to work! One question I had was, do you lose a lot of weight prior to your first fill, or does the weight start coming off after the fill? I have only lost 7 pounds, and I feel like maybe thats too little? Any help would be great!:)
  25. At this point in your journey it should be just a mathematical equation to losing weight? If your body needs 2000 calories a day to maintain and you re eating 1300 calories, you should be burning 700 more than you consume. It takes 3500 calories burned to lose 1 lb of fat. If you add exercise to the equation the results should be more dramatic. Do you keep a journal? I didn't and still don't but when I was stalled for 3 months I sat down with our nutritionist and she pointed out about 300 extra calories a day I could eliminate. I kicked up my exercise program and lost 19 lbs over the next 2 months. I've plateaued for the last week and will start a journal to see where I'm going wrong? I know I'm eating too much fruit and maybe some other foods that are slowing me down so the journal can help me get back on a lower calorie track. It's easy to stray and convince myself I'm not eating around my band. Give the journal a try and be sure to enter your exercise results every day. tmf
