6 cc's on first fill normal?

Sorry to be so late in responding to this. IMO you did right to measure the chili in a measuring cup rather than weigh it. And you're right in the thought to weigh solid Proteins. And MOST of the time, I measure my veggies in a measuring cup (my doc says 1/2 cup lower carb veggies). I've started weighing them too, just out of curiosity, and different veggies weigh different amounts. I know some bariatric surgeons say it's really more important to go by volume than weight when managing food intake. Your doctor or nutritionist may have other ideas, but when it comes to weighing food, I don't worry if it's 2.7 or 3.2 oz.. as long as it's close to 3oz, that's fine. And if I've been working out extremely hard or if the Protein is a very low calorie one.. like fish, I will sometimes have 4oz. I try not to increase my protein very often though as it could be a slippery slope back to weight gain. It can be a very confusing thing to try to decide how to measure your food, but you, your doc and your nut or dietician should be able to come up with a method that works for you, the individual. Remember the band "rules" aren't really all that rigid.. they can be modified to work with the individual. That's why I much prefer to call them guidelines. All this is based on my experience.. others might have differing views and that's ok too.
  3. stress can even cause a weight gain - stress about weight - stress about anything - stop stressing - stop weighing yourself - and emphasize how you feel - how do you feel?
  4. I want to ask a few questions to. I am new to this site. I have Hashimotos and fibromyalgia. Autoimmune diseases are the worst. I take 200 m of thyroxine and am constantly exhausted. Plus all the other things I take for pain and reflux. My body is truely a mess..I am post menopausal and my hashimotos has gone out of control. My weight gain has been 20kg( sorry I am Australian ) about 55lbs. In 4 years... Just crazy. I have been on every diet known to man...lol...hence my name... So I have been reading what others with the same disease are saying and they do have success. My 1st appointment is next week. Do the Drs know the true answer to malabsorption of vitamins? Having autoimmune diseases I am concerned getting more such as Parkinson's because of lack of the proper vitamins to support my body? Will the vitamins I take orally be enough will they absorb? Should I get vitamin injections instead. What are the crucial questions to ask the Dr in my first visit? Looking forward to hearing back from you any thoughts will be well received.

    1 week post op

I had a different sleeve procedure (ESG), but had the same fears. I thought I was feeling hunger. So I talked to my team about it, expecting the lecture. But they told me something that really opened my eyes: I have for decades interpreted every little stomach gurgle as a hunger signal. (This was part of my problem that led to my weight gain.) Time to stop and think about it first. Is this really hunger, or could it be thirst, gas, another sort of discomfort? I mean, like you I am only weeks out, so there is really no way this could be real hunger. I was told see if it responds to a sip of water. See if a sip of protein shake helps. Change position (sit/stand/turn over if in bed) to see if that makes it go away. Try a lozenge -- I had some sugar-free lemon Ricola drops because of the sore throat typical after an endoscopy. Bingo! That worked wonders! I don't know if it's an oral fixation thing, but a tiny lozenge does the trick. Here's how I know I am not really hungry: if I am working on a work project, I can go all day without feeling hunger. I am one of those that has to set a reminder to eat on my phone. So that feeling I was interpreting as hunger was something else. ("I'm not saying it was aliens, but it could have been aliens." 😁)

    First Blog Entry :)

I started my journey December of 2011. I am currently 5'5 and 242 pounds. I was feeling even more joint pain for months by then and had gained about 50 pounds. The shortness of breath and back pain were the most bothersome, besides the weight gain itself. I have always been a yo-yoer, but to be at a weight that I have NEVER been at, even when I was 9 months pregnant (which was roughly 230), was a major blow. I had a stroke of thought for WLS and began my research to see if I could be covered for the procedure by my insurance company and then proceed from there. I fit all of the criteria to be covered, so I found a great doctor and continued. I went to my psych appt and the seminar the same day, as I was and still am quite sure about having the WLS. I am scheduled now for my first consult on 12/28/11 and I am excited. The office is so helpful and they are rushing to submit the paperwork before the end of the year so I can schedule surgery sooner. I find myself already looking at food differently. Like, "I wont be eating THAT for a while" lol While I am not using that as an excuse to eat nothing but junk, I cant help but view food as I will after surgery, which I think is great that I am already in WLS mode. I think I am going to be able to handle the changes well, but that doesnt mean I know I will still have struggles and questions. I find that I am anxious and even a little impatient to get ahead in journey. I am hoping that the consult goes well and that the insurance approves the surgery and I hope that I will be able to have a surgery date set up...the sooner the better for me! It gives me hope that this new year of 2012 will be full of great things...manageable joint pain, being able to exercise again, weight loss, and a boost in my self esteem are just a few. I am also praying that all goes well, and that I havent gotten my hopes up just to be denied the surgery. I think that insurance companies should be more self aware of how others struggle instead of just the bottom line for their employers. I wish all the sleevers and would-be sleevers "Good Luck!!" and I hope to be joined the bench soon!

    No weight loss first week??

My nurse had warned me before surgery that a lot of people show weight gain between 6-10 lbs the first few days after surgery. I don't think I even weighed myself til after my 2 week post op. Also I didn't even want to bend over to take out my scale. They also recommended only weighing myself once a week. After 3 weeks I stalled for about 12 days which was frustrating. But I read a lot of people on here had the same happen at the same time. I remember for about the first month I completely regretted having surgery and thought it might not work for my but I'm still chugging along. I've been losing almost exactly 2 lbs a week since my first stall. I'm down 84lbs since my highest weight. Just keep reminding yourself of all the non scale related reasons you're doing this and it will be easier to keep focus. Measurements are another great way to see progress. I suggest taking them now if you haven't taken them since beginning the process. I didn't take mine until a month after surgery and I've lost 18 inches since then. Best of luck! It will all be worth it!

    GallBladder removal-easier than band?

One of my patients last week asked about gallbladder removal during her upcoming Lap Band so I offer some thoughts: Many people who have not had weight loss surgery end up with stones in their gallbladder, but not all of those stones are symptomatic and cause pain. Since rapid weight loss or weight gain can cause the formation of gallstones it is an area of interest to bariatric physicians and patients. There is a debate among physicians as to whether or not to perform a gallbladder removal at the time of weight-loss surgery. I recall that it was a topic of discussion at the American Society of Bariatric Surgery meeting I attended a couple of years ago, and there was no consensus as to whether or not remove the gallbladder. Some laparoscopic gastric bypass surgeons commented that the placement of the instruments for the bypass is not ideal for removal of the gallbladder, and hence that makes the surgery more difficult or makes it necessary to place more ports for instruments into the patient. I am not aware of many Lap Band surgeons that remove the gallbladder at the time of surgery for the following reasons: 1) By removing the gallbladder you introduce the possibility of having bacteria enter the bloodstream or abdominal cavity, since the bile in the gallbladder can harbor bacteria. You would prefer not to do this in the presence of a foreign body, the Lap Band. 2) The port placement for the Lap Band may not be ideal for removing the gallbladder and more ports may need to be added. 3) It is felt by some that the more gradual weight loss seen with the Lap Band compared to gastric bypass makes the likelihood of developing gallstones lower. 4) While generally a safe surgery, gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) does entail its own specific risks that are unique to that surgery, therefore adding a cholecystectomy to the Lap Band, theoretically adds to the risk of surgery. To answer Amy's original question about the recovery from the surgery: The laparoscopic cholecystectomy is generally well tolerated and most patients return to regular activity within a few days. I remember a patient who was a high school football couch and went to run practice the afternoon after his cholecystectomy. As with any surgery, everyone has a unique recovery based upon how their body responds to the surgery. Good luck!
  9. Just wondering if those of us who are already in menopause are sensing that losing weight even with VSG is more of a struggle than if we had done it at a younger age? It is so delightful to me to be past that time in my life and when I read of those who are struggling with that "TOM" and the associated Water retention/weight gain, I am grateful to not have to deal with that on top of the challenges of our new way of living. I do feel that my metabolism is slower that it used to be and I am a slow loser, but slow and steady and I feel better than I did in my 30's as I am much lighter on my feet and I feel more like my younger self. Interested to know what your take might be on this....
  10. I went to my surgeon in Feb 2013 and now I'm going back next week (post 6 month program) I don't remember how much I weighed but I think since Feb I've gained some weight. I've been battling 5-7lbs (which is actually an amazing improvement for me since I could easily gain 50lbs in a year if I'm not careful...) anyway... At this appointment I was told they will either clear me for surgery and call insurance for approval or they will require I do a few months of supervised diet. Do you think if I show a weight gain at all that I'm going to have to do more diet classes, or do you think I'll be ok? I'm so nervous.. This whole process has felt like its taken years and I'm just ready to be banded and start my new life!!! I know that it's a tool and I know how I should eat but without the tool it's so hard to feel satisfied so I eat too much. Hence the weight battle.. Nervous!!! Anxious!!

    Starved!

hi stephh! i just had my baby 9-28-15. i started at 257 and was reached my goal of 150 when i was 14months out, then two weeks later i found out i was pregnant. i too was only taking in about 700-800 pre pregnancy. around 13 weeks pregnant i started getting insanely hungry, literally every two hours. for me it really didn't ease up until i was about 32weeks. my dr wanted me to take in about 1800 calories a day i ended up putting on 42lbs in total. i lost 15lbs after my c section taking me from 192 to 177. i have been stuck there for the past two minths unfortunately, the scale just doesn't want to move for me. keep taking in as much Protein as you can. keep high protein Snacks with you if you're getting hungry often! congratulations on your pregnancy, you can pm me if any questions Thank you so much for responding!!!!!! I feel like I'm in the exact same scenario you were. I feel so much better knowing that someone else is hungry too. I was afraid of it being head hunger. Congratulations on your new baby! How was your pregnancy besides being hungry? Had you been pregnant before? Was it different? Sorry, I have SO many questions!!! Your weight gain doesn't seem bad to me. It seems like a manageable weight and will probably come off. I already have argued with my Dr about gaining weight... He said I could aim for 10-20 pounds because I'm at the top end of my healthy weight range. So far, I've stayed steady, but I'm not very far along.

Just a Vent, then I'll shut up

Is there any research that states a sleeved person will gain weight faster than a non sleeved person? From this story, it would seem the answer is yes. Soda might also have caused an accelerated weight gain because of stored toxins. Fat is attracted to toxins and it needs extra water to support it. Anyways, if you know the answer to my weight gain question, please post.

Do you notice how much others eat?

Cruises .. well, there are cruises and then there are cruises. For the past five years, pre-op, hubby and I have gone on annual all-inclusive cruises. On every one of these cruises I lost 2 pounds in 2 weeks. No big weight loss, but no weight gain either. That particular cruise line does not overserve its guests. Yes, one can certainly still overeat and gain weight there. But portions served at mealtime are small (definitely not American-sized), the restaurants are open only at mealtimes, and there are no food malls with hog dog stands, donut buffets, and ice cream parlors. In contrast, most cruise lines seem to design the cruising experience as a food Bacchanalia and see their guests as Christmas gooses who must be stuffed every day.

Blood pressure med cause weight gain?

I have taken blood pressure meds for a long time, and they have never caused weight gain for me. There are so many different types out there, I would suggest talking to your doctor and trying something else. Good Luck!

Please Don't Tell me your Horror Story

I had surgery April 2014. At 5'7", my highest weight was 245 and I was 226 on the day I was sleeved. My surgeon's goal weight for me was 160 and today i am around 150-152. I started in a size 20 and I'm now in a size 6/8. My recovery was a breeze! I didn't have one single complication after my surgery. Trapped gas pain? Nope. Acid reflux? 14 months out, never had it or a reason to ever take the prescription medications. Heart burn? Nope. Throwing up? Nope. Dumping? Nope. Aversions to food? Nope. The only "real" issues were things you really can't avoid which are hair thinning between months 3-8 BUT by one year it all grew back in. I also had a hard time with vitamins, but found some awesome melt away kind and the problem was quickly resolved. The first 24 hours in the hospital I was cursing the BP community for not warning me. Coming out of surgery wasn't fun as I was nauseous from the medicine. Once it was out of my system, I was fine. I didn't need much in the hospital except my cell phone, charger, long extension cord, my own pillow and toiletries. The first 3 days at home were the hardest and after that I didn't feel like I had surgery at all. I was back at work by the end of two weeks. I could have gone back earlier (I sit for a living, it's not very active.) and honestly, I found the process harder having so much unstructured time at home and the ability to wander into the kitchen. The supplies you will need post-op are minimal. I went overboard and bought stuff I still have never used 14 months post-op (example: those sugar free torani syrups.) Don't laugh, but one of the most handy things I found to have was Dixie paper cups. They are the perfect size to measure a few ounces of cottage cheese and other food and then you don't have to wash endless dishes! Keep in mind that everyone's process is different. The scary thing for me is I couldn't imagine what it would feel like to have my stomach removed post surgery. You just feel full quicker at first after you eat. Some people get into trouble when they push their new tummies limits. I'm not sure why, but adjusting to a new lifestyle was easy for me. It's not to say it didn't have challenges. I didn't go out much to eat in public at first. Now 14 months out I can eat whatever I want. It's both a blessing and a curse. I was able to reach my goal weight within a year without issue and am now maintaining. For the first time in my life, I'm not really worried about weight gain. I love the fact that I never feel hungry. I love that I feel satisfied after a small amount of food. 14 months out I still have a great amount of restriction. I've never pushed this. I know my tummies capacity and stop eating well before then. It probably helped that I ate a pretty clean diet pre-surgery. I wasn't one to binge on Big Macs and never drank regular soda or any drinks with calories in them. Many of the "rules" this surgery requires I was already doing. Other rules I couldn't do before surgery, but after surgery it's really easy to do. For example, I had difficulty not eating/drinking at the same time before surgery. Now my tummy is so tiny that I can't drink while eating! I do still take tiny sips though! Do I follow the rules 100%? No way! I log everything into my lositapp on my phone and for me, having that accountability has been key. I pretty much eat whatever I want (in smaller quantity) BUT I find myself typically making healthy choices. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy dessert on occasion or other treat that I want. For me that's what makes this a lifestyle change vs. a diet. Good luck!

    VSG & autoimmune diseases?

Hi, I have a neurological disorder called CRPS and I have been really hit hard with pain since 2011. The pain in my feet had doctors increase medications which resulted in a 50+ pound weight gain. I know I am so lucky to be in a position to slow down, not work and focus on aggressive treatments but the extra pounds were really causing the pain in my feet worse. I had elevated blood pressure and sleep apnea. Happy to say that after my surgery on Mar 29, Mt apnea and blood pressure have normalized. Too soon to tell how much of my chronic pain will be affected but just loosing weight alone will be a huge start! Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App
  17. The consequences for the caffine and liquor, other than the addiction factor, is an increase in the likelihood of getting an ulcer. Drinking after you eat will push the food through your sleeve faster, meaning you will be hungry again sonner...which leads to more calories and weight gain. Also depending on what you put in yr coffee, if anything, that and the liquor are just non-nutritional calories.

    Post Op Eating before Fills

Yep, no restriction yet. I cannot wait until my first fill! I just called the doc's office today to see if I can have it at 6 weeks instead of 7. I hope he says yes. I still have another 3 weeks before that - I am just 3 weeks post op today and hungry a lot. There is a reason they call this time 'bandster hell'. LOL My doc says DO NOT focus on weight loss right now although he doesn't want to see a weight gain either.

    What About Your Friends?

I feel sad for you losing your lifelong friend. I have been on both sides of this coin. I have one friend who lost 200+ pounds, by cutting out all carbs. Every single time we ran in to people we knew, she had to go through the story of the weight loss transformation..... All the while my 327 pound self stood there to hear it yet again. I WAS JEALOUS..... Didn't want to be, but I was. But, nonetheless, I was supportive and encouraged her all the way. I mean, she is my friend. That's what friends do....... Now, I've lost a little over 100 pounds and I was worried about my relationship with my two BEST friends who are overweight. One of them has joined the gym with me and has been by my side on a daily basis. She is doing fabulous as well bc of all the exercise. The other friend stated out loud that she is jealous, but she can handle it too. So, I am lucky. The three of us have been like sisters since elementary school ( and we are 53)..... So a very long time. We have supported each other when one of us is down and we gave been the rock for each other when there have been deaths in the families, and we are true friends..... No weight gain or weight loss could break that friendship. It just makes me think that your friend is perhaps weak. She doesn't know how to be supportive and happy for you. She doesn't know how to work through the jealousy. Sorry for your loss of your friend.
  20. Refresher............ I was banded on the 22nd,..(not that long ago I realize) I dont weigh often at all...in fact 2 times total since surgery with today being my 2nd time..... but decided I was feeling good about myself and decided to weigh at home to see how it was going...I GAINED 3 lbs...yes gained. Now...I track my food on "lose it" am staying around 900-1000 calories a day and no cheating what so ever. HOW IN THE WORLD is it possible to gain weight on a restricted amt of food...I want to cry! I feel like a MORON....gaining weight after having weight loss surgery..... I mean what is the point. I can gain weight easily on my own with out having had surgery???!! I guess it is so frustrating as I am following exact what I am to do, eating the proper amts and nothing more. HOw is it possible to eat 1/4 of what I used to eat, cutting out all sweets and pop etc only to gain weight. BUMMED BIG TIME

Where are all my May Sleevers?

I finally stopped throwing up 3 weeks ago. Feel bad for you that you had to endure not feeling that well on your vacation. The weight gain could be Fluid retention from flying too. I usually swell up like a balloon on flights over 3 hours! I too am suffering from quite a bit of a queazy feelings after drinking anything. And for first time in my life I have been experiencing heart burn but mostly when I drink plain Water?!? Odd Overall though, I feel GREAT. Down 26lbs since surgery, now that my calories are between 800-1000 /day the weight is moving much quicker. Started up with my Pilates instructor for the first time since surgery and she was shocked. Said I looked like I lost half of me! I love her! She's probably exaggerating - but it was sure nice to hear. I have a brand new wardrobe weekly it seems. All of the beautiful clothes that I have bought over the past few years only to never wear them or rarely wear them do to my ever increasing size. Only now, I can wear them and some I've only worn once or twice and they are falling off now - what a tremendous journey. I hope everyone is doing well too!

    Question about last fill, etc.

I have had both Inamed LapBands. The VG 10cc band is usually filled to 3-5cc's at the time of surgery. I presently have 9.5 cc's in my VG and only PB occasionally when I try to eat steak which just doesn't work or am stressed while eating. Are you sure that you have a 10cc band and the 4cc?? Many people get confused with the length of their band and not the fill capacity. If you can't eat and it hurts no matter what band you have I recommend that you get some saline removed before you get side effects like reflux or soft food syndrome which will lead to poor eating choices and a weight gain. My surgeon will fill me beyond capacity but I am doing it the old fashioned way to get off the last 20 pounds and still be able to eat a variety of foods in different parts of the globe. BTW, I can wear size 8 jeans (J. Jill "Tried and True Fit") which are loose at the waist now. I may just stay where I am and just maintain this weight. Each surgeon seems to do fills very differently and each of our bodies react differently to fill levels. That being said, if you are in pain and it hurts when you eat time, it is time to contact your surgeon to discuss the situation. Being too tight leads to a prolapse (slipped band) which often has to be replaced. I hope that my "wisdom" of being band for 3 years with the 4cc band for 14 months and the VG band for 25 months helps you.

    Help

I has the sleeve in Sept 2015, its been 1 year 8 months and I was maintaining for a while. I noticed my weight at 155lbs last June to April this year 139.4lbs. I weighed my self today and I am 143.0lbs.. that is the 1st time I have seen a weight gain and it makes me nervous, I know its only 4lbs but just seeing the weight go up is freaking me out.... I need to get back down and I know I have been eating not all the healthy lately due to being busy. I have fell off track for the last year or so.. what I do : I eat anything I want or crave just not big amounts I eat protein 1st all the time carbs last I eat every 3 to 4 hours depending on what I eat, sometimes every 2hrs. I can only no matter how hard I try drink 36oz of water, during the week 16oz of coffee and here and there 20 oz of life water. I have been super tired I take vit d, b12 complex, b 12 sublingual, a hair and nail collagen pill and estroven. I drink socially( always with people I trust) I never have problems. I do not have a exercise routine nor a gym membership, just do squats and walk and punches. I do have a sweet tooth nibble here and there but not whole candy bars or anything. Please no rude comments this is for support and I know no one is perfect. I knew this day would come and it could be just because I am older and in menopause. But 4lbs to me is 100 Thanks

    pregnant and afraid

Chittick24 thanks for the information, it's really helpful to read about your experience. I am very concerned about weight gain, so I'm glad to hear you didn't have any issues. Did you experience the nausea prior to your pregnancy?
