Hello! My name is Elky and I am hopefully having bariatric surgery in July! I have "classic PCOS" with all the classic symptoms. It is very hard for me to lose weight. I only lose on a VERY strict no carb, no sugar diet, which is very very hard to keep without help. I talked with my bariatric nutritonist about this and she thought that maybe i should consider the gastric sleeve instead. What do you all think about this? My insurance doesn't cover the sleeve with someone with my BMI, but my doctor says he can try to appeal to the insurance. Anyone out there know anything about this? TIA!

loose skin? is it inevitable?
Rootman replied to bec34's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Many factors come into play here. Your age - the older you are the less elastic your skin is Your skin type - some people just have more elastic skin than others The pre and post size, before and after weight loss. Some people are just luckier and while they weigh heavily they just aren't that big, therefore the skin isn't stretched to such massive proportions. It's impossible to tell whether you will have sagging skin because of the above and other factors. But remember having saggy skin won't give you diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure or high cholesterol but being obese WILL. You can always wear compression garments with longer sleeves or pay the price and have reconstructive surgery. -
loose skin? is it inevitable?
iegal replied to bec34's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hate to say the truth, but yeah you might have some loose skin. I bear a few scars from my weight, just like I have strech marks from being pregnant. BIG DEAL. Loose skin is going to depend upon your age and condition of skin now. I have seen a couple of people on VST post pictures of what their arms looked like pre and post surgery weightloss (after loosing weight) and skin looked pretty good. Some have to get surgery if skin is overstreched. I have lost almost 75 lbs and will not need surgery and am no spring chicken. I am sure if I work out more some of the skin will look better. I notice a turkey neck when moving certain ways, but none of my "tell it like it is" girlfriends see what I see. So, don't borrow worries. Do what you can, work out those those trouble areas (youtube has great home videos too), moisturize a lot and exfoliate. My goal was not to wear a mini skirt or bikini to costco, but to be healthy and active. Good luck! No regrets. -
Well done. That's excellent weight loss. I have lost 55 lbs in 13 weeks. Only really got 35 lbs to go...although not sure if I want to lose that much. It sure is a journey lol Xxx

Cardio is always good, but if you really want to tone, then you need to weight train. And don't worry about the myth that you will get bulky. That is actually very, very difficult to do. There are good books out there, or if you can, getting a trainer is a good way to go if you can afford it. Hit the gym, or get resistance bands, or do workouts using your own body weight. There is lots of info on the Internet! Great job on your weight loss success!

Bad breath! Please help
RickM replied to TLCRC3SexyMom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, ketosis is fundamentally a result of one's diet being low in carbohydrates; it really isn't a result of losing weight as the OP's doc suggested - as you suggest, one can happily lose weight without the side effects by increasing carb intake. I never had any particular problem with these symptoms, but kept my diet relatively balanced (within our minimum protein requirements and calorie limits). When my wife was going through this, she occasionally experienced these symptoms though she wasn't specifically on a low carb diet but occasional variations in her diet would drop her below her symptomatic threshold. -
Hey there! I am a pre-sleever......going through the ropes right now - the supervised weight loss......possible surgery in June, 2017....I live in Kitsap County and would like to start a support group of pre, post sleevers in this area.....so much of this surgery is being done I think it is important to have support. If you are interested in getting something started you can contact me at 360.265.7485 or email me at Medwoman58@yahoo.com....Subway on Sedgwick has a private room that we could commune in.....I know there is one going on in Lacey.....I will attend the first one - but it's at 6 to 8 pm in the evening and as I'm getting older I don't like driving far when it is dark.....Iknow that sounds silly....however, in the summer when it is light out until 10, then that will be a different story....but something more local for Kitsap residents or Gig Harbor would be wonderful! Hope to hear from you guys! Blessings, Suzy

Food will not be the end of me!
TD41 replied to Dinora7's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thx for the honesty.... I had my surgery Dec 28. I have lost 20lbs so far. i know it wasnt easy for you but you have accomplished a major milestone in your life!!!! I know i have a long way to go to meet my goal but once the goal has been met we are happy on one hand to be healthy but food has and will always be apart of our lives but also we have to find ways/hobbies etc to fill the void to eating unhealthy and remind ourselves of what we truly felt like in our old body which sufferered tremendously due to being over weight.... I told myself that i have to eat to live and not live to eat anymore.... This is a journey and a life-long journey which we all have to stay on course if we want to remain in control and healthy.... Best of luck reaching your 100lbs weight loss and many blessings!!! Hugs, TD41 -
It is incredible how time flies, how I'm 7 wks from from my surgiversary and I've lost 90 lbs. I started this journey at 238 and I'm currently 148. Originally I was set on getting to 120 lbs, but to be honest as my body has readjusted it is clear that 120 would make me look sickly, it been easy and tough and emotional and life changing and now I'm at the scared out of my mind point. Things seemed magical and easy the first 6 months and then the swelling and stomach/ body adjustments made it harder and not to mention the brain that can't get the cravings of fried goodness to disappear. Sure I've modified my life greatly but now the reality of life is hitting, the weight is off I feel great and I want to live normally and eternally keep the weight off! To never ever taste fried chicken in my life again or icecream or have drinks impossible I'm only human, and 30 years of feed my body the awfully bad things yet so good tasting is the hardest habit to break. Sure you would say" just grow up and deal" but this journey at the one year point is just the beginning, it's like the honey moon is coming to its end and reality of daily life and my til death do us part relationship with food is becoming soo scary! I want to reach my goal of 100lbs total loss at my surgiversary but as it nears I realize how much harder and how much more comited I must become! Til death do us part a relationship of ups and downs with food, and I just keep reminding myself how the work will never and a promise that food will not be the end of me! Sorry for the rant

Headaches and Nausea
ShrinkingPeach replied to Jay05's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
38 days post-op here. No headaches, no nausea, yes tiredness ( I had major surgery) but that is getting better all the time, and no hair thinning yet. I understand the hair thinning happens beginning month 3 or so. I am also told it is just extra shedding, I have very thick hair so not too worried about it, and it comes back so it isn't permanent. I would rather lose to my goal weight than have thick hair. lol Good luck! -
Researching the VSG...Needing reviews

A consult with a surgeon or even just an information session might address some of your concerns. I'll try to answer the questions I can. Will I be sick a lot afterwards?-throw up sick... There's no way to know in advance. I haven't thrown up once since my surgery 6 months ago. But some people have serious problems with nausea and vomiting. A woman who had her surgery the same day as me with the same surgeon was throwing up for MONTHS after surgery. So there is a real possibility, though I think it is fairly uncommon. I definitely had some moments of serious discomfort. It's a challenge to learn how your new stomach works and how much food you can safely eat without reaching the point of discomfort. It's a process and it gets easier over time. I am now over 6 months out and rarely have issues. Will I only lose in the beginning and then the weight stop? That's entirely up to you. If you stick to the plan (Protein first, getting all your Water, exercising, eating the right foods) then you will continue to lose. I have been a slow, but consistent loser. Will I have a lot of lose saggy skin? Maybe? Saggy or loose skin seems to depend a lot on age and genetics. There are a few things you can do to try to lessen the problem. Make sure you stay well hydrated. Moisturize daily. Do strength training to "fill in" loose areas with muscle where the fat used to be. And supplement with Vitamin C and Beef Gelatin. But in the grand scheme of things, what is a little loose skin compared to your health? Will I have hair loss? Probably. Most people lose at least some hair. Some people lose a LOT of hair. I started losing my hair about 3.5 months post-op, but it never got so bad that anyone besides me would notice. The hair loss slowed around 5 months post-op and now, at a little over 6 months post-op, I have lots of new hair growing back in. Again, this is a pretty trivial mater when the alternative is staying fat and risking your long-term health. Will I look older? I've seen this go either way. Some people actually look a lot younger post weight-loss. I think it's due to just taking more care in their overall appearance with their make-up and hair and what style clothing they wear. If you end up with a lot of sagging skin in your face and neck or a very thin face, it might make you look older. -

This is a new depressed feeling. I really thought I had depressed on lock down. I suppose you could be right. But the feeling is more frustrate and lost. Misunderstood. Once I'm cleared to start running again next week. I look forward to it. Perhaps that will help. I feel like I have lost friends as thy have been jealous of my weight loss. But it comes with a price a huge price and I need to find my new way. -
I completed my last weight management class last Thursday. I was told my info most likely would have been submitted on Friday. I called today to check and found out it wasn't submitted yet. The case manager said she was waiting for my clearance my my phys exam. I had this done at the end August. Feeling frustrated that this wasn't sent over yet.

I kept telling myself that I wasn't going to be that person that freaks out if i had a weight loss stall. But here I am.. Only 5 days out and freaking out about only losing 1 pound!!!!!!!!!! In my peop diet class they said that there is a small percentage of people ( 1% or something like that) that WLS doesn't work for them! What if I'm that 1%?? I mean.. 5 days ago I had this surgery and I've only lose 1 lb?!? I know I'm being stupid.. Sorry, but I'm just a little scared of it not working for me. :/

I'm debating about the sleeved
CowgirlJane replied to Aspire2inspire's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do not agree that all obese people are primarily "emotional eaters". however, since you know that about yourself, consider addressing it first. the thing with the sleeve, once you are say a year out... it is possible to graze, snack and stuff yourself back to your pre surgery weight. Most people DON'T do that, but it is a pretty big step to have part of your stomach removed and you want to maximize your chance of success! I personally found becoming thin wonderful joyeous, a dream come true, but also... stressful at times. i am not primarily an emotional eater, however, it was a pretty nerve wracking experience. Just becoming slim can be an emotional trigger... sounds crazy but it is true for some. -

What's your averag weight loss?
Mini Me Wanna~Be replied to Sdonovan78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@Leeann71, its frustrating me because I am eating 700 calories a day, I know for sure my b4 surgery calories were way higher and the week after surgery I gained weight. I cant even wrap my head around how thats even possible to gain. I see all these stories of people losing 10, 15, 20 the 1st month after surgery and I gain. just a little frustrating to me but I will get thru it im sure. -
SummerMarie 5 months - down 80 lbs?? thats terrific since you haven't posted your ticker, or profile (hint, hint) i don't know where your weight # stands how much more you have to loose??? i can see that you are working hard, trying to change things up also to try and solve your problem not loosing, going up and then down again a lb or 2???? what a bummer easier said than done but..........you gotta be patient don't get discouraged - sometimes people then might go back to old bad habits don't let that happen to you!!!! don't watch the scale have you taken your measurements - do your clothes maybe feel a little bigger???? i'm sure things will work out good luck "God Grant Me Patience, Just Hurry Up about It!!!"

Get insurance to approve without requirement?
VSG148Sz6 replied to oklafarmgal's topic in Insurance & Financing
Ok here goes...I just joined this forum to get answers as well but I feel unless I say something someone else won't get answers.....I had the lapband inserted march 2008....started at 237...5'8" (recorded but incorrect) so I met the guidelines. After a baby I went up to 259 then down to 193...lowest with band....I started having complications with the band....leaking....didn't feel Anything until three months in when started having severe pains. In and out of hospital resulted in the removal of my band.....we were waiting first for the insurance comp to approve fixing the band but they denied..."not medically necessary" since I was now not "morbidly obese"anymore..... Then tried for the sleeve...denied again..."experimental bc my bmi was below 35.....I had the band removed to find out the tube cracked.....the band was literally cutting up my insides. Since surgery on October 2, I have gained 17lbs and now meet the 35 bmi but the insurance company wants a letter of medical necessity. Normal you would have to go under supervised weight loss program monitoring for 3 months but my internal medical doctor is hopeful that his letter showing my past six year struggle will suffice. If I don't get approve under my insurance I will try my husbands and if denied under his ill end up paying for it.....I find it ironic that they knew I had a weight problem approved the first device, then when it became defective I'm no longer a candidate. Nothing within my control.....I'll be patient and wait my turn. Hopefully all goes well by the summer. -

Exercise after Surgery (worries!)
lauraellen80 replied to DojiGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have problems with my lower back, S/I joint, and hip, which was one of the reasons I decided to get surgery. I was caught in this cycle of not being able to exercise (or even take a short walk), and then gaining more weight, which made the pain worse. Like you, I was also concerned about being able to walk after surgery like they wanted me to. But since surgery (just 1 week ago) I've actually been able to walk better than I have in a couple years without pain. I lost about 25 lbs under the dietitian's monitoring for a couple months prior and on the pre-op diet, so maybe that was enough to get some of the pressure off my back. I only took pain meds in the hospital and before bed for a few days after, so I don't think that's it. The recumbent bike may be a good way to get exercise in, but part of the reason that they emphasize walking right off the bat is to help work out the gas that's pumped into you during surgery, so I don't know if the bike would help with that or not. Good luck! Here's to no more (okay, less) pain! Edited to add: Like @@kimby1029 said, Water aerobics is great for joint pain. I cannot wait to get back to my classes at the Y. If you can find some deep-water classes, even better, because you won't be pushing off the floor of the pool, so it's even less stress on your knee. -
I am scheduled to have surgery July 6th...and I have been reading these boards for tips and hints. One thing that I read in the frequently asked questions is about exercise. It's recommended you start walking ASAP. Last year I tore the meniscus on my right knee, had surgery....but it is still very painful. My doctor told me weight loss would definitely help it! So my question is this....what are some other ways to exercise for anyone that walking isn't an immediate option? I have a recumbent stationary bike. I guess I'm pre-worrying, because I am SO ready to do this! I'm very excited/anxious, and the one thing that I see over and over that seems to help people be successful is walking. My doctor told me that even losing 40 pounds will diminish the pain and make long walks a realistic goal! I just want to make sure I can get to a 40 pound loss!!! Thanks in advance! Doji
