    Antidepressants

When I went for my psych eval back in late Aug 2019 - she suggested that I go ahead and start Prozac to have it 'on board' before the post-op depression kicked in. So, I've been on 20mg Prozac since. Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday - so no clue how the med will affect me post-op - but my surgeon said the capsule is small enough for me to swallow normally - so I don't have to open it up, or switch to liquid (at least in theory - we will see if my body agrees with my surgeon ;-)) I've been seeing a therapist for about 2.5 years - but she couldn't do my bariatric eval. However, she agreed with the Prozac and has been encouraged by my response to it. Not that she diagnosed me with depression - but it's helping my anxiety, actually. Anyway, I'm rambling. I'll let you know how post-op goes!!! Good luck to you too!!!
  2. We are twins. I've gained 10 pounds these last two weeks. I will lead the way with surgery on the 9th and share as much with you as possible.
  3. @MaybeMeow this! So much this. My surgery got moved up a week and is supposed to be 6/19. I am so nervous. I started this process in January. I was gung-ho on getting healthy, started orange theory and thought I’d lose a bunch of weight before the surgery so that I’d have an easier time. Then my back issues started coming back... and then lockdown from covid and anxiety hit the roof. Instead of losing weight, I’ve gained 15lbs waiting for the surgery. I thought I had 4 more weeks to get back on track but it looks like I’m starting the liquid diet on Friday. I’m 5’2”, 230 lbs now. I thought I’d have more time. Food funerals have been frequent and I’ve been eating more - a ton more even for me. I’ve also kept this process to myself with just my spouse in the know. And I can’t believe I just wrote that.
  4. Just got the Revision from a 2013 LSG to DS 10 days ago. I'm recovering well and seeing excellent results. Everything went better than expected. Just graduated to Puree stage today after four weeks of a liquid diet. The diet was satisfying and I never went hungry. Now I'm adding some new foods to my diet for this 2 week stage. In these COVID-19 times, the hospital does not allow visitors so no family could visit during my 5 day stay. I had four other required procedures that week for a total of 3 surgeries over 4 days. I've seen a lot of great, relevant information on this forum. I look forward to getting through the journey with all of you.
  5. I was sleeved 11/15/19, so I'll be 7 months post-op soon.. ive had a longer recovery road than normal but recently felt I may be time to get into fitness...I tried CrossFit and my body definitely let me know "hey this is too much"...I almost feel like I failed simply because I wasn't able to push myself but had to listen to my body. Also wasn't aware of how intense CrossFit was. Anyways, any pointers of how to begin exercise without injuring myself? I know I'll need to ease into it for sure.. June 2020 surgeries

Oh, and I'm scheduled for 6/17. (RNY - was gonna do sleeve but I decided on the RNY after talking a lot with my nutritionist and doing research) Was supposed to be May 4th, but was postponed due to COVID-19. I was feeling pretty hopeless that entire month and a half when it was cancelled (cancelled late march..), so I gained some weight. Luckily, my surgeon said no more weight gain and we can still do the surgery. My insurance doesn't have any requirements but the 6 month weigh ins. I'm 16 days away and I"m pushing myself with eating more veggies, more protein and drinking more water. It's stuff I've done before, because I lost ~80lbs on Keto a year and some change ago, but gained it all back. I figured this time, I can do all those changes I made w/keto, and the new tool of the surgery and I should be set. 🤞
  7. Felt like crap on the last miles of my bike ride. My stomach decided to start hurting during the ride and I couldn't hydrate properly and I also couldn't eat my energy bar. Puked up the bite I took a mile later. I felt a little weird to the stomach since noon but I didn't think it would become that bad.

The last 10 km felt like hell. 😩

I feel better after coffee, a carrot-ginger soup and a protein pudding but still... wasn't fun.

  8. Strictly on a weight loss basis, from what I have seen over the years, I would not revise from a VSG to an RNY, simply because the two are so close metabolically that one doesn't really work any better than the other for weight loss. One may lose a bit more, maybe 10-20 lb, during the early post op stage when the diet is so limited during recovery, and the RNY malabsorption makes the loss a bit faster, but overall on winds up in the same place. In 2-3 years, you will likely be struggling to maintain your weight as you are now. If you need to keep yourself at, say, 1200 calories to maintain weight now, that will also be the case long term with the bypass. The RNY does tend to help with reflux problems (not guaranteed - some will still have it post RNY, or develop it later - but statistically better) but I wouldn't go through that unless it can't be controlled with medication. That is something to be medically evaluated, and if appropriate, that may be a good reason for such a revision. For weight struggles as the primary problem, I would look seriously at the DS as a better alternative as that is a metbolically stronger procedure than either the VSG or RNY. It is also a straightforward revision as it starts with your sleeve and adds the intestinal malabsorption to it. If appropriate, as resleeve can be done at the same time if there are any problems with your sleeve. The downside is that since the DS is more technically challenging for the surgeon, not as many surgeons offer it, so one sometimes has to look around to find one. Good luck!
  9. Yes, it definitely gets better. For a second, I was ready to tell the surgeon that something was wrong! Lol I’m officially one week post-op today and I feel 10 x better than a few days ago. I am getting my Protein in and able to swallow much more comfortably. My tummy is still freaking out at some things I try to give it, but it has calmed down for the most part. One thing that helped, that my surgeon did not actually prescribe me, was an acid blocker. In my experience as a nurse, we usually always give patients who are eating little to no food some sort of acid reduction coverage to prevent upset stomach. So, I started taking low dose Pepcid on my own a few days ago and that seemed to help also. My primary issue now is constipation!! Oy vey! 😩
  10. I had my hiatal hernia repaired too and did not know that the sharp pain was related to that... I thought it was related to the sleeve surgery. It is such a jarring feeling but luckily mine only lasts about 15 seconds each time.. I keep having good "hours" and not so great "hours" (instead of days.. it is now marked by hours). I think we just need to give it time. I am on day 10 (almost 11).
  11. Not familar with facility, but my daughter had gastric bypass 10 years ago with Dr. Gritsus. Her surgery was at Chilton in Pompton Lakes. She has kept off her 110 weight loss to date. Dr. G was helpful and kind throughout the process. She was only 21 at the time of her surgery. I would recommend him as a surgeon.
  12. At 10+ years post op I'm also battling ups and downs. My story is different from yours but the bottom line is getting rid of the excess weight. Have you considered options besides revision surgery? I'm likely covered for revision despite relatively low regain due to other health issues. You may improve your chances of approval by focusing on co morbidities caused by regain. A revision would be successful, but until I live differently I may face the same situation in another 10 years. My BEHAVIOR caused my weight gain. INTERMITTENT FASTING is helping me control this need to be full. I'm training my body and brain to understand that feeling hunger is not the same as starvation. It is helping me to drop the pounds and revise my attitude towards food. Jason Fung (search YouTube and online) and others have been my guides. My desire to be full is my eating disorder. Fasting helps me to focus on nutrition and understand when I need to eat vs when I want to eat. As an advocate of health at any size, my diet for life keeps me in good health. Periodically I tweak my program because of metabolism issues. When I stay with my program I maintainin. When I slip from my program the need to get full emerges. Diets to reset my pouch as someone already suggested work well for me. However, eventually I want to feel fullness again and I'm attempting to reset more and more often. This is why I'm working to become content with an empty belly and a well nourished body. I wish you successful weight loss and good health however you decide to accomplish your goals.

    Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!

To be honest most of it has nothing to do with the plastic surgery. It was put of for several months because of Covid-19 and I didn’t think it wise to wait until afterward. Some I wasn’t keen on putting it to words until I had it done. I did see my primary care physician for some CBC for the surgery, the other tests they do at hospital BC where I’m having surgery in Mexico. I had to see an ENT because of persistent nosebleeds. And will have to follow up Two days before I leave. I had to see my endocrinologist to get reauthorization for a test that was supposed to have been scheduled months ago and wasn’t. A Thyroid biopsy with an interventional radiologist at the hospital. I’m having that June 4th. Then June 10th a double balloon enteroscopy I’ve been waiting months for that, my bariatric surgeon wanted due to history of ulcers in the remnant portion of stomach and blind portion of small intestine as well as my persistent symptoms. I’m not worried about any of it should I be, it doesn’t matter whatever it is, it is. I’ll deal with it in that moment. I’m not going to let it stop me from going ahead with my plans. And I should be good to go for surgery. I have gotten through enough other surgeries despite everything my body goes through every day with lifelong chronic illness. I will do my best to do this as exhausting as it is. It’s just hard to plan to pack and to think. like what position is best to sleep in post surgery. I got a list of things to bring from the hospital but is there any special tips to keep the stitches from stretching. They recommended a boppy pillow. I got some cheap old navy jersey knit swing dresses, a robe ... a sling backpack. For all I know I’ll want to stay in a hospital gown the whole time 🤣 even in the hotel ... I’ve been there done that with surgeries. I had open hysterectomy so it will be similar except all the way around so that’s different. I’ve had long incisions in my calves but not thighs. I watched a belt lipectomy on YouTube. It’s a crazy surgery. It doesn’t scare me. Now crazy ants set off ptsd but something like that doesn’t scare me go figure ... I will have to manage my chronic pain as best I can. The hardest part is It’s ultimate impact on my medical condition M.E. But it’s something I have to deal with every day of my life. So just finding the new normal. to answer the last question. I have to get test for Covid-19 before I have the double balloon enteroscopy. But it wasn’t a requirement before the plastic surgery.

    BMI under 35 before surgery

My BMI was 34 when I had my gastric sleeve surgery December 2, 2019 - absolutely no complications and I'm thrilled with my progress. Did have a recent 4 week stall but they are to be expected; made some minor adjustments and now I'm back on track with slow, steady weight loss. My health has improved tremendously, and all my blood work is now in the normal range whereas before surgery I was pre-diabetic, labs indicated stage 1 kidney disease, and the beginning stages of fatty liver disease - no more! Good luck!

    Hungry right after sleeve

Are you sure your hungry? Or is it Head Hunger or Acid Reflux Try this trick and I agree with above .....DO NOT RUSH TO SOLID FOODS! Make yourself a good broth about 10 oz sip that over two hours. Make sure its a homemade or good broth, Not wallmart Chicken broth! I prefer to make my own. Start with a vegetable broth - Just google it easy to make. Also cut out 10% of the water they say to use. That will for sure stop any hunger pains, if you have them You will learn to love broth and soup during this phase, As you heal it tastes good and is great for you
  16. Mine was really bad. I started to have second thoughts about getting the surgery. I sat in the hospital parking lot for 10 minutes or more. I dont regret going through with it. It was a great decision.

    Day 2 Postop

Heya, I am new here. I just had mine done one 5/21, so I am 9 days out (almost 10). My worst days were the day after I came home from the hospital.... and then the next day, so days 3 & 4. I gets easier after that. But boy is the pain a shocker when you get home and no longer get morphine every 2 hours. I didn't have issues with gas... just bad constipation, which luckily I found help for on this site.. after days of horrible constipation where my waste was RIGHT at the end of my colon but just would not come out (gross, I know.. I am sorry) --- I finally read on this site about people taking miralax and that worked well for me, i got scared when someone posted they had to go to the hospital because of an impacted colon, Just take it easy. We will slowly get stronger.. Congrats on your surgery!

    Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!

That’s awesome! Mine is inching ever closer. It’s hard to think with all the doctor appointments I had to cram in beforehand that were delayed for so long due to Covid-19. I’m overthinking and under thinking at the same time. And likely not focusing on the right things either, I’m sure you are excited knowing that you will have this when you reach your goal. It doesn’t hurt to plan ahead me and planning don’t get along very well. I jumped in I kind of just exist in the moment I’m in ...

    5 years out

I have my five-year anniversary in four days!! doing well. Initially got down to into the 130s but gained 15-20 lbs in year 3 (10 of which I was OK with - with my large frame and musculature, 130s was too light for me). I stabilized at 150 for a couple of years, but last fall I was abroad for a month, then came back in time of the holidays, and then the pandemic hit, so I managed to get up to 160. I'm working on getting back down to 150 as that's where I feel best. It's happening but S-L-O-W going. Who knew how hard it would be to lose a measly 10 lbs? anyway, overall it's been a great success and I'd do it over again 1000 times... Shouldn't have waited so long to take the plunge!
  21. Since I'm about 10 days away from a bypass I'd love to hear from the Veteran Bypassers but of course Sleevers too as I know it's not THAT different. I think what keeps me awake at night is the LOSS of the joy I receive celebrating with food or splurging as a Foodie with my husband (naturally trim) or the joy of treats with my children. I don't need the speech about finding joy in other things. I get that. And I know food has been an anchor to me for many years now. A burden. But I do also get great joy from it. From looking forward to it. Even during my years of temporarily successful Weight Watchers attempts I could save points for a big treat on the weekend and felt great joy in looking forward to that bowl of ice cream or fried chicken and potatoes. In fact, it's the first thing my physician-husband (who recommends WLS to his patients) said to me when I told him I was considering the surgery ... "But... food makes you happy." So... I guess I'd like to hear from those who have found a way to still find JOY in their food. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
  22. Congrats to you! The key to managing weight gain is staying alert to it and having a workable plan. Seems like you have this in hand. I'm also 10+ years out and living through the ups and downs. My salvation has been shopping with a tape measure to ensure I never buy a larger size. Vanity also helps. I prefer the best quality I can afford over quantity. When the pounds pile on I cringe in the mirror and deal with it. Looking like all hell is breaking loose and having limited use of my wardrobe is motivating.

    June 2020 surgeries

Good luck to the Class of June 2020. I had mine in July 2019 and it was the best decision I've ever made! I was almost 73 at the time and now 100 pounds down, no C-Pap, and knees are all better. Just go into this with an open heart, and I approached it as if my life depended on this, which it did and never looked back. Good luck on your journey.
  24. I was trying to remember a few details on my weight loss timeline so I started reading my old posts. I had such fun reading it, A handful of posters are still active here from when I started and have really been a source of encouragement and support for me. I honestly don’t think I would have been as successful if I hadn’t jumped in and started posting. So thank you all, It’s comforting to log on and recognize people and meet new people. The people that are no longer posting were also a huge help, I hope they are all doing well. I tend to check the same threads when I log on so I probably miss a lot of what’s going on! It is kind of like having a journal, I’m so glad I kept active. If you are a newer poster stick with it, it really helps. I also had a good laugh reading through old threads! I kind of miss the monthly challenges that @GreenTealael used to host. If anyone feels up to it post any old posts, I found it very therapeutic and fun. Ps. @sillykitty I forgot you got me hooked on statement necklaces! I was a lurker on this forum for months before I posted. Here is my first post, March 29, 2019:

    Coronavirus / COVID - 19

Hi Lisa, When you wrote that in March yes it was the end of our Summer and we did not shut down as a country until around the 22nd of March...I was stood down from my job along with most of the country on the 31st of March. I am not quite sure what constitutes "walloped" where you are, but just to clarify, we in Australia have had a very lucky and "best case" scenario when it comes to Covid, whilst the lock down has been difficult and economically challenging, our death rate had been truly astounding considering that we travel the world a lot and have a very large international tourism industry. As of today May 30, we have only lost 103 people due to Covid-19 and only 7,200 total cases in the country since the pandemic hit, currently there are only 2 people on ventilators due to Covid in the whole country. We have moved from level 4 lockdown and are at level 2 or even 1 in some states now and the country is starting to return to normal, although travel especially any international travel to or from will be off the cards for a long time I think. Was it due to the fact it hit in Summer?... The distance we are from the rest of the world?.. Quick, decisive and thorough lock down as soon as the scale of the problem was identified? or Just sheer good luck? No doubt analyists will be studying, conjecting and analysing for years to come. I hope and pray the rest of the world can get some better outcomes from this in the very near future, the death rate has been truly appalling in so many developed nations. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_pandemic_by_country_and_territory
