Hey guys I'm getting banding tomorrow morning!! Exciting, but I'm starting to have major doubts... but I think its just anxiety about having surgery.. I've never had any surgery or anasthesia before. Anyways, I'm really freaking out over eating habits. I'm worried that after this surgery I'm going to eat less, but still eat CRAP all the time. I'm a college student and I really don't know how to cook, but I am very aware of what is healthy and what is not. How do you guys get over cravings?? How do you cook at first? What do you puree thats healthy and won't sabatoge you in the mushy phase? How do you restrict your carbs?! I'm a complete carb addict and I'm worried that even if I cook my own foods, if I have carbs all the time I will yet again be a failure at weight loss. Any tips, references, or books to get my mind prepared to not sabatoge myself?

Need Some Weight Loss Buddies!!!
Jessica43082 replied to jersgirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
[im jessie43082 on there if you want to friend mr quote name=jersgirl' timestamp='1315855687' post='1662202] Ok, I was banded on July 21st of this year and I suck. I have only lost 7 lbs. Mostly because I have been able to eat anything and everything that I was able to eat before and have not changed any of my eating habits. Remember, I am not good at dieting, that is why I had this thing put in my body!!! I have had 2 fills now, the first one was 3 cc's and the second one was 1.5 cc's. Still no restriction. Here is the good part, I started working out on Sunday August 28th and have been kickin butt!! I have done at least 25 minutes of Turbo Jam everyday since. I figure why pay 11,500 out of pocket to be the same person as I was before. I just joined myfitnesspal.com and have been logging my food which is helping a ton. I need support and some buddies to chat with though. If you are on myfitnesspal.com my user name is jersgirl060606. Please look me up and let's lend some support to one another =-) I know eventually I will have the restriction I need to get through the food issues. I am starving all the time and am looking forward to the day that my band will assist me in my weight loss journey. In the meantime, I will continue working out at least 6 days per week. -
I did like the show where he had the overweight guy imagine his favorite food covered with his least favorite food plus hair and toilet scum. I thought the guy was gonna hurl when he said "OK, take one more bite" (mentally of course).

Isn't it fun to play "What If???!! I've had a curly perm every three months like clockwork since the 80's and when I had the surgery, I said "No More!" and now I'm poker straight--but I DID learn what a flat Iron is real quick! Then, suddenly last week (I've been using blond hair coloring for years) I decided to go RED! And I did! BUT, it was so flaming orangy-red that I called my beautician immediately and put an ash brown on top of it--so now I have my God-given hair color back, reddish brown. (Blond in the morning, Redhead in the afternoon, and Brunette at night--am I an idiot???!!) And I'm debating where to go from here! Had lasik, have fake fingernails, and would like to have my boobs pulled up into an area that gravity would have a hard time finding! But first, teeth whitening!!!!!!!!!!!

Getting Frustrated!!!
Ange05 replied to skinnyjenny08's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dont worry Jen, im with ya. We have very similar circumstances. I was banded about 5 weeks ago aswell and I lost 15 pounds and no more. No weight is coming off what so ever. I have had 1 fill already but it did nothing and I am going back for my second on October 22nd. Hang in there, you just need the right restriction like I do aswell, then the weight will come off with smaller portions. Yes there will be some things you wont be able to eat once you get suitable restriction, but I see it as a small price to pay for weight loss. I have 4ml in a 10ml band and it's not enough for me as yet, but everyone is different. I am eating normal meals at the moment, doesn't feel like I have even had surgery, so I know what your going through. -
That is awesome! I'm so glad you've kept your mind to continue doing this without the band. And I have to admit I am jealous over your weight loss.

LOL! This thread is funny to me for some reason! LOL! I am sweating more but I contribute it to my weight loss and hormones just trying to regulate. I think once our bodies get stable or stop losing then our hormones will stop bouncing around and causing sweat...I HOPE!

Year-end wrap-up - how did you do?
pizzicato66 replied to pizzicato66's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
So Karri, What's up with that much baking? Holy cow!!!! That's a terrific loss - congratulations! I'm pondering whether another fill is in order this month. My doc gave me the option of skipping and just coming in Feb for my 6 month postop, but I do have something scheduled, in case I do want to go in. I don't think my problem is really restriction though - it's my noshing and grazing! I'm taking it easy today but tonight we're going for Indian food and I may allow a bit of flexibility before the new year begins! -
Hi Everyone! My name is Kim and I'm new here. I was looking to talk to people who have had lap band surgery that are in a similar to me in their goal. I am 5'5" tall and weigh 295lbs. I live in Southern California and have a referral for the weight loss surgery process. My medical group requires 6 months of classes (2x per month) prior to the surgery. Did anyone else have to do this? If so, was it beneficial? I have one child (almost 2 yrs old) and was really hoping to have more children. When I was pregnant I ate really well and lost 50 lbs (while pregnant) and since he was born, I have gained all of it back and another 25 lbs. One of my biggest concerns is not being to have children after the proceedure. Anyone have information on having children after the proceedure? I am terrified to have gastric bypass and feel more comfortable with the lap band proceedure but I have to do something. I really just don't want to have complications and possibly die from either proceedure, I have a child to live for. I am sure I will be posting more

cost of lap band surgery
Jodi_620 replied to erdlori's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is a huge variance. Without insurance, within the US self-pay can be anywhere from $15,000.00 to $20,000.00 or more, depending on your location. Some doctors include aftercare and others charge for fills and visits. With insurance the variance is even bigger. It really depends on what kind of coverage you have and can range from no coverage for weight loss surgery to 50%, 80%, 100%. My surgeon charges $17,500.00 for self-pay patients. Fills are not included. With insurance he charged the insurance company a lot more, around $29,000.00 (excluding anesthesia), they sqabbled back and forth for a couple of months and in the end my total out-of-pocket was around $5,000.00. Insurance has covered aftercare and fills 100% If you have insurance, the first step is to see if they cover weight loss surgery and if so how much and what the requirements are. Then find some seminars in your area and go from there. -
The lapband has changed my life. I was banded on 9/1/05. I went from 265 to 165 lbs . I dyed my hair red and I get constant attention from guys. I have even had two guys fight for me at a party I went to. Before I lost the weight, I was home reading on Friday and Saturday nights and I was the babysitter for the neighbors while they went out. I have had some conplications and had to go for a revision, but I have never regretted my decision at all.

I'm at perfect tightness--but my eating is in a rut! Some ideas, please...
do_i_remember replied to make33's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Have you tried lettuce wraps? I make mine with ground chicken, mushrooms and water chesnuts. I add a little soy, oyster sauce etc. I found the recipe by googling Pei Wei lettuce wraps. They're good and easy to eat. I also do a lot of Thai and Chinese because I can do strong flavors and I eat with chop sticks. Makes me slow down! LOL Also, I make couscous with lots of minced veggies, sometimes I add a little minced chicken for protein. I like a strong vinegar taste and this fits the bill. Good luck and I'm impressed with your weight loss. -
I will be banded on April 30th!
kathystrick replied to Bethannwd's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Beth! I am still pre-op, so really can't answer any of your questions, but wanted to say Hi and welcome you to LBT! What I can say is this: All of us here have some sort of issue with food, otherwise, we wouldn't even be considering WLS. If you aren't ready to deal with those issues, no weight loss program will be successful. The band is only a tool to help with weight loss. The work is still up to you. Yes, the thought of failing yet again is scary. As I move along through my own pre-op process, I am dealing with that fear too. But I know how terribly bad I want to be healthy, and as someone on these boards has said, "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels". Knowing how true that statement is is my ultimate goal. Good luck to you and be sure to keep us posted on your progress! -
Hi Bejeweled. I'm glad you like your bullet. I have a regular hand one by Braun and I love it too. Great if you're in a hurry in the am. Liquid protein. Don't worry about not seeing too much in the way of weight loss. It will happen as soon as you start getting your fills.

Thinking about it...
Fanny Adams replied to sldeitrus's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was never particularly successful at dieting. Sure, I tried them all and started out strong but my motivation factor rarely lasted. I just couldn't deal with being hungry all the time. I would have difficulties going to sleep because I was hungry, wake up in the middle of the night dreaming about food, get up in the morning and immediately think about what I was allowed to eat that day. After a couple of weeks I would start to cheat. Once that happened, it didn't take long before I'd throw my hands in the air and say "**** it! I don't care if I'm fat!!" and go pig out. My approach to exercise was much the same - first couple of weeks I'd go hard, but it would taper off. The weight loss ALWAYS slows after the first couple of weeks, even if you are sticking to it perfectly, because half the initial loss is only Water. That didn't stop my head from saying to me "Why bother? It's not working! What difference does it make if you don't go to the gym today?" Getting the band was a whole change of headspace. I knew I couldn't face the prospect of trying and failing at yet another diet. I knew I couldn't face the idea of struggling to live with that hunger for the 18 months I needed to lose the weight I wanted to lose. The band gave me a reason to believe that I could succeed. I don't fight hunger all the time. I don't obsess about food all the time. Believe it or not, I've even FORGOTTEN TO EAT MEALS! I was absolutely astounded the first time that happened. I eat pretty much what I would have eaten on a "balanced 1200 cal" diet plan, but it doesn't FEEL like a diet, because I'm not feeling deprived. My exercise has been sporadic - went hard at first, slacked off for a while, got back into it. Right now, I am going strong at it, because it is SO much easier when 70lb lighter and I can really feel the difference. DO IT! In a year's time, you'll be saying it's the best thing you ever did for yourself. -
Thank you Sweetgothic. I did not know why they say not to drink from a straw. I hope to be band in December but I am really moving forward quickly I might be able to be on the band wagon in November now. I hope I do just as good as you all with the weight loss. 58 lbs is wonderful.

Can't seem to get back on track
James Marusek replied to Swhitton85's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
There are two phases to weight loss surgery. These are the "Weight Loss" phase and the "Maintenance" phase. The strategy for each of these phase is very different. During the weight loss phase, weight loss is achieved through meal volume control. During the maintenance phase, weight is maintained through hunger control. I am 3 years post-op RNY and I am doing well in the maintenance phase. This short article describes my experience with the Maintenance phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf -

My Insurance letter has been sent.....how many....
Alexandra replied to Kimber-lilly's topic in The Lounge
What's your BMI currently? If it's over 40 you may not "need" any co-morbidities at all. However, I didn't think I had any either except for borderline high blood pressure, but my PCP's letter had a list of things that would be improved by weight loss. I didn't know I was that sick! Good luck!! -
Newbie-Still deciding which way to go....
LilMissDiva Irene replied to Copjock's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hello copjock! You're not likely to get many differing opinions since this is a lap band forum - so maybe just to get more of an idea, you can also visit other forums where you can hear from patients with GBS. For myself, I DO NOT regret getting the lap band. So far my band has not had any major issues. The only major issue I have come accross is myself. My head - and you will hear this many times, "They don't band your brain!". This is so true! For the Gastric Banding you have to be willing to completely change your lifestyle. You have to be committed to exercise, eating right and you must be accepting of taking the good with the bad. It's not easy living with the band, you have to chew extremely well, take tiny bites and you won't be able to tolerate some of your favorite foods. Some you will likely never be able to eat to some extent. You won't lose nearly as fast as if you got the GBS, and you will have to work twice as hard for every pound lost. The only things it will help you with is eating less. Some even claim it helps with hunger, but I have yet to experience this myself... LOL!! Not saying it isn't true, just not for me. It won't wake you up early to get a good workout in, it won't help you keep those ice-creams out of your mouth and it surely won't help you tackle those mental issues that got your where you are now. All that said, I am grateful to my band, because before it - I could out eat any man (truly) and now I eat "like a bird" as I've been told. I never thought I'd ever hear that being said but it's true now! Just a side note too, there are other Gastric Weight Loss Surgeries out there besides these two. You might want to look into those as well. There is no perfect one, only the right one for you. Good luck! Let us know how you do! -
What vitamins do you guys take? My hair loss has been depressing me lately and I want to ensure I'm getting all my nutrients in. Thanks in advance!

Going back and forth with bariatric surgery....
annieM replied to nymoosic's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Moosictchr, Welcome! Please check out all of the band vs. bypass threads in this forum before you go to see your doc. The lapband is the easiest to recover from (the actual surgery) and doesn't have all of the wierd long-term malabsorption complications of the bypass or RNY. Doctors like fast results, often at the cost of your overall health at times (except for band docs!) so don't be surprised if the consult you are seeking pushes for bypass or RNY. The weight loss with the band is slow. 1-2 lbs/ week. Waiting for the numbers to drop gets boring, but it happens! The slow weight loss is so much healthier for you and leaves less hanging skin and you have less muscle waisting. Not to mention bone loss... Good luck, and I hope you choose the band! -
I'm going nuts here!!!!!
010308 replied to Sherry L.'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So here are the things I've heard. Don't know for sure what's true and what's not: The carbonation will cause the pouch to expand. Once you have good restriction if you drink carbonation it will deaden the nerves at the top of your stomach that make you feel full. If these are true, then neither of them can benefit weight loss. One suggestion that I heard somewhere and I cannot imagine that it would be tolerable because I think the thing that most of us love about our soda is the carbonation.... but, someone suggested pouring it in the magic bullet (blender) and giving it a whirl until all the fizz is gone and then drink it.
