Psych Meds after Gastric Bypass
vikingbeast replied to EsojLabina's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Topiramate (long, long pre-surgery) made me absolutely ravenous, which is stupid because it was prescribed as part of a weight loss regimen. As soon as I stopped it, the hunger went away. -
Cramping with almost every sip!
Fross replied to Fross's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My wife uses a tiny spoon made for bariatric patients, they come in a set on Amazon - Mindful Eating Portion Control Flatware - for weight loss bariatric diet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B1JRZYV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_GA1ABFHC2W238H3MTQ22?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1. I would not recommend a sippy cup, it will cause you to swallow gas and cause awful cramps. We have found using a regular water bottle and just taking tiny sips is the way to go. -

Are There Any Demographic Twins Who Got The Sleeve?
Arabesque replied to lalalauvender's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don’t match either but much of what you will experience is individual anyway. We’re all different in how we recover, our pre existing medical conditions, genetics, age, gender, starting weight, length of time being overweight, etc. There will be similarities but also differences. @lizonaplane is correct. The amount of hair you lose & how long it persists is individual. Your natural hair loss cycle is accelerated from the shock of the surgery & weight loss & your initial low calorie intake. You really just have to ride it out. Keep up your protein (breaks down into the amino acids which grow hair & nails & aids skin health). Biotin only may make your new growth hair stronger not help your body grow more hair. How much loose skin you have is influenced by factors like age (skin loses elastin as you age), how much weight you lose & how long you were overweight, & genetics (luck of the gene pool). It won’t all go away. Once your skin is stretched out, & after whatever bounce back you may get has passed, that’s it. Think of an old hair band stretched out from overuse. Your skin is the same. Some say weight training can help to fill in the loose skin with muscle but depends on how much muscle you want. I carried my obese weight for about 3 or 4 years so not really that long. When I got down to my usual overweight range I had very little loose skin (little pinches) but when I got to my lowest weight I had lots more (big pinches). Still not a lot really especially considering my age & it’s easily hidden under my clothes including body con dresses. No surgery for me. You tend to lose weight in the same way you put on & carried your weight. If you carried more of your weight in your tummy it will likely be the last place you’ll lose it in comparison. I carried my weight pretty evenly: thighs, butt, tummy, breasts. Benefit of an hour glass figure I guess & I lost it much the same even way. Take regular body measurements to track your weight loss too. Sometimes it shows on a tape measure before it does on the scales. I went from a 18E to a 10E (pretty empty upper breasts now though). Remember an E cup on a size 18 is much bigger than a size 10 one so while the cup size is the same my breasts are smaller. -
Are There Any Demographic Twins Who Got The Sleeve?
lizonaplane replied to lalalauvender's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't match your demographics (I'm 5'3", 41, starting weight 280, no PCOS, and I can't imagine having a goal for my bra size LOL), but I can try to give you some general information from what I've seen on here. The amount of hair people lose varies a lot, but no lotion or potion or supplement you take is going to fix it. It will start and stop on it's own UNLESS you don't get your protein and multivitamin in on a daily basis, and then the hair loss will be worse. People will swear by biotin, but there is no evidence, and increasing your biotin can cause weird liver function test results. You are young, so you have that on your side as far as loose skin. But again, it varies a lot. Like hair loss, there is NOTHING other than plastic surgery you can do to fix loose skin. No lotions or potions or supplements will help, nor will exercises. Focus on getting healthy, wait a few years after surgery to decide if you NEED plastic surgery. One thing to do in the meantime: if you have rashes or infections from your lose skin as you lose weight, document this with pictures and have your doctor document this in your chart because there is a possibility that your skin surgery could be covered by insurance if there is a documented medical need. I'm 8 weeks out from surgery, and my stomach has gone down, but it is still larger than I'd like. However, this again will vary. I carry a lot of weight in my stomach; some people carry more weight in their thighs and butt or in their chest. I will say that for many of the people whose pictures I have seen, you can notice it in the face before anywhere else. Good luck on this journey! -
Psych Meds after Gastric Bypass
EsojLabina replied to EsojLabina's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@lizonaplane congratulations on ur weight loss, extended release medication would be a problem for people like me that did the bypass because of the anatomical changes down. You should not have any issues. I would still suggest to speak with your surgeon. -
Psych Meds after Gastric Bypass
lizonaplane replied to EsojLabina's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
8 weeks out and I am mentally stable so far. Not sure I'm thrilled about having done the surgery, since it's now really unpleasant to eat and I'm hungry all the time. But the weight loss is very good - down 25lbs since surgery. I had sleeve, none of my meds are extended release, but I take a lot of meds because I have bipolar and anxiety. The only med I've changed is that I'm stopping the topamax which I took for migraines because I haven't had any migraines since surgery. I would highly recommend working with a psychopharmacologist if you take a lot of psych meds and are thinking about WLS. There's a lot to consider. -
Originally, LapBands were marketed as permanent and life-long. They are a medical grade device so they don't have an expiration date and do not require removal after a certain period of time. That being said, as the years have gone on, long term complication rates continue to go up, and there is documented research that indicates that they can degrade over time, usually starting around the 10 year mark. That is limited though, and varies widely. As such, many LapBand patients have opted to have them removed and move on to VSG or RNY as a permanent weight loss solution. If you are no longer happy with it, not using it, and/or having complications, definitely get in touch with a bariatric surgeon in your area and see what options you have for getting it removed.

Going back to work
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to Lisa G's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 7 weeks post-op and have lost around 45lbs from my highest weight. Recently, I saw some friends I hadn't seen since well before I started losing weight and who do not know I had WLS. They immediately noticed and commented on my weight loss, which made me terribly uncomfortable. They of course asked what I was doing and I simply stated I'm focusing on high quality protein and frequent, small meals because that's what my body seems to like best (all true). Then I quickly pivoted and asked how they were doing, blah blah blah. People LOVE to talk about themselves. Give them the chance, and they will run with it. -
So glad I have this forum...it has been so helpful that last 7 months. I am 7 months post op sleeve and have been at the same weight for exactly 6 weeks. I admit I have not been tracking my intake and have been "testing" lots of different foods now that I know I am fully healed which I am sure is the issue. I too have been losing hair for the past 2-3 months but this am i only had a half of hand of hair so there is some progress. It always nice to known I am not the only one going through this :) I also have not been walking due to the amount of light outside. This am I was finally able to walk again this am before work and I started tracking my food again so fingers crossed. I have consistently had an intake of 60-80gm of proteins a day and more than 80 oz of water daily.

Are There Any Demographic Twins Who Got The Sleeve?
lalalauvender posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I wanna see if there is anyone who has similar demographics to me and what your outcomes were for the questions below the demographics. Height: 5'6 HW: 340 GW: 150 Age: Early 20's Diagnosed with PCOS Starting Cup Size: H Goal Cup Size: D or DD How much hair loss did you have after surgery? Did you have sagging skin after losing weight? If so, did it go away after a while without plastic surgery? If yes, what did you do to make it go away? Did your stomach go down with the rest of your body while losing weight or is your stomach still bigger than the rest of your body? -
I’m headed back into the office for the first time in 18 months and I am 60 pounds lighter. Not sure why I am so nervous but I guess I’m not sure what to say about my weight loss. No one at the office knows I had WLS. And you can’t really tell over zoom. Thoughts?

How to Stop Grazing? Please Help!
ms.sss replied to Blueslily's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
LIke @Jaelzion, im a grazer. Its what i've got to do as I am limited as to what i can eat at one sitting...both during weight loss phase AND in maintenance (but more so in maintenance as a need to keep calories up) I'm 3 years post op (and been maintaining my current weight consistently for almost 2.5 years) and this way of eating hasn't (yet) resulted in any unintended weight gain. For ME it doesn't seem to matter how often or what I'm eating...just total calories...so it doesn't matter if eat 2000 cals in 3 meals or if its spread out in 15 small snacks throughout the the day....end result is still the same. -
How to Stop Grazing? Please Help!
Blueslily replied to Blueslily's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi there, Congrats on starting your journey. You make some good points for many folks on here to consider. I meet with a therapist once a month just to check in about how it's going. Hopefully everyone who goes through this process meets with someone during the process, not just for the initial clearance. I'm doing fine in the therapy realm. I should have clarified that I just meant when I was coming g down from the vacation high, I was feeling bored. That's not in general or why I'm grazing now. Good luck with your remodeling projects. I spent about 80% of my weekend redoing my walk-in closet. All big clothes out and smaller clothes in. I had gone "shopping in my closet" a couple times during the summer. I had smaller clothes packed in plastic totes from years ago when I was smaller. I had gone through a couple totes during the summer as I lost weight to pick out a few things to wear. But, now that it's cold out, I had to go through again because I had zero warm clothes to wear in my drawers or hanging in the closet. So, this weeknd I literally took everything out all the drawers, closet, and totes and switched everything because summer clothes that had fit now dont, I had to try on all the smaller winter clothes that were packed in totes, take summer clothes out the drawers and swap for warmer ones, and I had to buy some winter clothes. It was quite the weekend project to redo what's in drawers and hanging in closet. Totes were swapped out as well. So, no boredom for me. Quite a busy weeknd. Sadly, spent some money during the process also. I've tried to keep my clothes cost down. Luckily my smaller clothes were good quality so they are still in style and in good shape. Woohoo! All the best to you during your journey. Congrats on your weight loss so far. 😁 -
Sleeve to Bypass worried about losing hair
newsam1154 replied to Tomo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I took biotin months before my first procedure with VSG to prevent hair loss and found that my hair loss was extremely minimal compared to others in the community. I still continue to take biotin to this day yet I'm still worried about hair loss with revision surgery coming up, haha! I hope it has helped you!!! -
Any April 2021 surgeries?!
Blueslily replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Congrats on reaching Wonderland! I can relate to the hair loss issue. It started later than expected for me. I thought I had dodged that bullet, but nope. Shockingly I wasn't as mad about it as I thought I would be, but I'm not thrilled. Hoping it stops soon also. When you graze, do you feel full? What helps you stop grazing. I'm scared so I posted a question about that today. I want to stop. I had not grazed during this entire process. I don't want a bad habit like that to sabotage all this hard work. My grazing is in addition to meals so it's too much food intake. Although the scale shows me fluctuating in a one pound range. Also, congrats on your A1C levels and reducing medicine! Wooho! Feels great doesn't it! -
Hello All, I had my sleeve surgery exactly 7 months ago. Have done great with weight loss and no complications. I had my 6 month follow up last month, and surgeon said I was doing great. He asked if I was hungry, I said no. Fast forward just 2-3 days, and I started grazing. It has gone on for 3 weeks now and in scared. I'm not hungry. I can graze even after meals when I feel full. It's like a few bites of fruit or almonds or now its carrots. I weigh daily which isn't an emotional issue for me. It's just a check. I am at goal so I'm not trying to lose more, but I'm not wanting to use grazing to maintain weight either. I was going to ask at my 8 month follow up appt next month, what should I do to stop losing and just maintai. Looks like I've found it. But, I dont want grazing to be the answer. For those of you who had challenges with grazing, how did you stop it? Mine is totally mental. It started after my first true vacation in october. I did great with staying on plan during the trip. When I got back home, I felt the "back home from vacation" letdown and maybe even a little boredom. Then I started grazing. I need to stop. I'm scared because my restriction is a little less, and I don't want to trigger a bad habit. It's been 3 weeks. Please share what helped you stop. P.S. Yes, I'm alerting my dietitian today also. But, you all can share lived experience of what helped you stop. Thanks!

I’m with the give them a miss until you’re at or close to your goal team. Sticking to your plan will help you take the most advantage of your surgery. When you get closer to goal you may start to look for healthy substitutes for your traditional choices. Try air fried or oven baked not deep fried. Try vegetable based pastas (you can eat zucchini noodles & cauliflower rice from solid foods). There are keto friendly low carb high protein breads you could try later on. If your desire to eat these ‘non bariatric friendly foods’ is driven by emotions, finding a good therapist may be helpful. Recognising the causes of your emotional eating, finding ways to manage them better & identifying other means of coping with your emotional needs than eating, etc. will only help you be more successful with your weight loss & maintenance. A benefit of avoiding those foods while you’re losing is by goal you may actually reduce or lose some of your desire for pizza, pasta, & the other foods you currently want & depend on. Which will make it much easier if you chose to have the odd slice of bread or pizza, etc. now & again in the future. Personally, I don’t eat pasta (only fresh zucchini noodles), rice or bread & avoid sweet things & fried foods. They were all things I ate regularly & enjoyed but I don’t really miss them at all now. I was able to break my need for them & I was eating them for a lot longer than you’ve been alive 😉. It can be done. Exercise will only contribute to you losing a maximum of 20% of the weight you have to lose. Of course it has lots of other benefits so I’m certainly not saying exercise is a waste of time but don’t rely on it to loose your weight. But it’s really up to you & you discovering what works best for you. Good luck.

Post op day 5 after sleeping most of the day yesterday I woke up early with my 5.5 year old and let my husband sleep in. I ready to get up anyways because I guess of maybe reflux. I’ve never had it before but something in my sternum area was bothering me. my belly button incision is still pretty sore while getting up, bending over, and to the touch. It doesn’t, and never did require anything more than Tylenol (which thankfully I have the dissolvable). I had little meltdown involving some tears over trying to stomach yet again another protein shake I hate. Everyone’s beloved fairlife can go straight to hell. So I haven’t even reached 10g of protein yet people, imma die. Also I need to find another multi vitamin. so I pick myself up and brush my tank teeth (all this fake sweet stuff in protein waters/shakes/vitamins/chewable gas x/dissolvable Tylenol/sugar jello/sugar free popsicles is giving the worse taste in my mouth). i did manage with no problem 32 oz of water, 1/2 ounce at time using a med cup, spaced 3 min apart sometimes longer if was doing something. My goal tomorrow is to increase that by another 16 oz, we’ll see. Ok so after feeling like I was being a major baby about the cussing protein shakes I decided to white knuckle it and do 1/2 oz shots with 5 min in between. I had a cup of water for rinsing my mouth out and an empty cup to spit the rinse into between shots. And I managed 2 oz. and the after taste was STILL after the rinse. I had a sugar free popsicle for the first time, and even though I am totally over artificial sweeteners, it felt nice to bite into something. hungry and desperate for something that was palatable, I sent my husband to Panera to get 4 cups of different soups. I chose to strain the broccoli and cheese soup and water it down to slide off of spoon. I ate 1/4 cup by toddler spoonfuls every 3 min. I had to reheat 3 times for 19 sec. I wanted to eat the entire cup, but atlas I did not. I was satisfied and then passed out for a nap. I will be having that for dinner as well. Healthy? Not really, but I need some motherfarten calories, ANYTHING that doesn’t make me gag. today was better than yesterday. I took a lovely shower and did my hair. the end.

November Surgery Buddies!!!
Happymouse13 replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello from 2 days post op. I just wanted to make a small list of things that helped me while in hospital. 1) lip ointment ( Aquaphor or anything thick & goopy) lips were really chapped. 2) Dry mouth swish...(I used Biotene) just make sure to spit it out! 3) Neck pillow 4) Ear buds & phone charger 5) Sleep mask 6) Air freshener 7) Hair tie 😎 Face wash & lotion helped too. I was very dry coming out of surgery. ***I also wore very loose, high waisted thin yoga type pants w/ oversize shirt. I almost wore a large maxi dress, but realized that they would need to lift the full dress up to check my wounds. -
well I'm 6 weeks post OP, lost 41 pounds so far, and I feel great, i thought about retiring early, because i had spinal stenosis, and couldn't walk but 50 yards with out having to sit, because the pain was so bad, but now I'm walking 5 miles per day, not at one time though, i feel like a new man, everyone notices but me, I cant see the weight loss, but i can feel the difference,

HELP! Pre-op, Almost at Finish Line... Thoughts of Bailing
learn2cook replied to You Are My Sunshine's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m three months post op and feel absolutely great now. You will feel so much better too after your body heals. Likely you will surprise yourself each day with another activity you couldn’t do before. Like doing a lunge in yoga or walking up the stairs without getting winded. Focus on your goals. I kept in mind that during the actual surgery I was going to be asleep. I wasn’t in charge of doing the actual surgery. It’s silly but it calmed me down. All I had to do was go to sleep and wake up, and I did. I was still me and felt like me afterward too. You will too. I also use a piece of jewelry as an anchor to remind myself to keep my focus on weight loss and self care. (WW idea) I have a ring. I couldn’t wear jewelry into the hospital but tapped my finger to remind myself of self care when I got scared. My old WW leader had a charm bracelet from her MIL who had died from diabetes complications. I still use my ring to refocus after missteps like Halloween candy lol. -
Last Friday I had weight loss surgery, I had somewhat a restless night after surgery so I'm little bit Tired. My pain is bearable when I'm in different positions i have different levels of comfort, my thoart is sore, swollen and dry but small sips of water is help me. My diet is drink clear liquid like broth,Unsweetened juice , and sugar free jello. Also I was surprise I was not hungry, I'm just dehydrated and thirsty. My mental stage was full of a variety of emotions I just undergone a complete change in my life forever, and Food has always been a lifelong friend, a companion, a stress reliever, and my addiction.I still ask myself "Did I do the right thing" or "What did I do to myself?" I will keep you post on how I'm doing with my surgery.
