How do I get enough protein
jaminator replied to Arthur Dent's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Agree with above, i am three months out and every morning i have a smoothie made from 2 scoops chocolate VEGA 1 protein powder (24 grams) and 6 oz skim milk with extra protein (10 grams) and 6 ounces chameleon cold brew coffee. Throw into a cup of crushed ice and blend in ninja. that makes sure i get a good protein boost in an easy way in the morning. In the puree stage put that unjury unflavored powder on everything you can. beyond puree stage order some pure protein bars (15 grams) or kind (there are some that are 12 grams) barsand have those between meals. get some of those oikos triple zeros yogurts and eat those. Go to smoothie king and get one of the high protein smoothies and tell them to sub the turbinado for non cal sweetener. There are lots of little things you can do to get the protein in over the course of the day. -
Anyone else have no nausea ever and can drink a lot one week post-surgery?

Today I move on to yogurt and pureed soups and ricotta cheese and I'm PSYCHED. For the ricotta cheese - try this - it's delicious. Take about 1/2 c of it, add a little almond extract and a splenda and mix it up. It tastes like a delicious dessert! Plus, you'll have multiple servings, so that's good. Good luck everyone! Glad I'm not the only one with no nausea. -
I just might give up caffeine for good

Dreamingsmall- the other thing I meant to say - sorry- this is getting long- is that you really need to eat breakfast and lunch- if you're skipping meals then that's probably why you're stalled. Your body will hold on to weight if it feels like it isn't going to be fed- even if it's just a yogurt or glass of milk - get your metabolism going in the morning by have something when you first get up. Your metabolism won't start up it's engine until it's challenged by food (or a liquid supplement like milk or a protein shake)- otherwise you're telling your body to only metabolize for half the day- and you want it to burn all day- it's your "fat furnace" for lack of a better term Anyway- I hope that helps- it will make a big difference if you have something every 3-4 hours - and that means protein- Keep it up! Just eat more [emoji4] -
started two days ago. Mine is two weeks... 3 carnation instant breakfast (essentials) - 1 yogurt - 2 pieces of fruit -1 cup of broth - Jelllo & sugar free popsicles. NO COFFEE - not even decaf ... My doctor told me on Tuesday that he doesn't want me to be hungry - so if I need to supplement with a scrambled egg or an occasional oatmeal or an extra yogurt that is fine with him. I have been dreading this... but on the second day it really isn't that bad... I am putting protein powder into my shakes and honestly I am not hungry - I like the cucumber idea because chewing and crunching on something is the only thing that is making me mildly crazy... I also heard ice chips... so far so good..

How do I get enough protein
GassyGurl replied to Arthur Dent's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Our pan calls for 3 meals, and 40oz of shakes. I eat yogurt, cheese, and put protein powder in my coffee. I also eat a lot of canned chicken. Buffalo chicken dip, or add canned chicken to my soup. Plus, protein water is useful. If I have a good day, I will have 1 premier protein, but in the beginning, I had to have 2. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Protein foods.. Cottage cheese, yogurt, cheese, milk, kefir, tofu, beans, lentils, nuts, peanuts, seeds, eggs, meat, fish, seafood. Oats have 5g per serving. Some of these aren't soft.. nuts and meat especially. You could make a smoothie with yogurt or cottage cheese or milk and peanut butter and banana.
-
Cereal can be soft. A question to ask yourself is whether cereal is the best choice. It has quite a few calories, but almost no protein. Protein foods include yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, beans, and soft meats like tuna salad or soft white fish. If you are getting plenty of protein and need calories, then cereal IS a good idea. It all depends on how your eating day unfolds.

GAINED 4LBs....8 weeks post.
Berry78 replied to dreamingsmall's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The same every day! Yup. But since these are food groups, it can be mixed up. One day its hamburger patty and green beans and sweet potato and another its salmon and zucchini and a peach. Plain greek yogurt and cottage cheese are interchangeable too. It's enough variety for me and I love the freedom of not wondering what to eat. Meat is a pain.. I like it freshly cooked, but don't want to cook it several times a day. So keeping it to one meal works for me. In fact, that used to be the hardest meal to get in, but now when I'm really hungry it is the most satisfying. -
I am about 6 weeks out. I'm down about 40lbs. I'm happy with my results so far, but I have constant stomach pain. It's not excruciating, more like a big rock sitting in my stomach. Not just after I eat, all the time. I wake up with it. I don't know if I'm hungry, full, have acid issues or just crazy!! It is worse after I eat. I've tried eating less (stopping way before I am starting to feel full), eating slower, eating different foods, etc, but it's still there. Water is the worst. My doc office says it is normal and go away eventually. I was pretty emotional for a couple of weeks after surgery, but that seemed to level out. I'm getting that way again; so far the only foods that are really comfortable are yogurt and cottage cheese. I've had them every. Single. Day. For 6 weeks. Ok, that sounds like a big pity party!! I'm just tired of being uncomfortable all of the time.

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty

Yeah, honestly I knew I'd feel a little down, it I was not expecting just how much. We were never ones to go out all the time, or have elaborate dinner parties, or go crazy at social functions with food or anything- but suddenly not having food be part of your life at all, is a hard transition. No cooking on your own, or with your significant other, no trips to the grocery store and saying "this looks good" (healthy or otherwise), no sitting at the table for meals together (how long can you make 2 table spoons last...).... i didn't think it'd be that hard to just eat cottage cheese, yogurt and smoothies all the time lol ( just very very small amounts of those things)...kind of thinking "it's not forever" doesn't really seem to help....I'm thinking that as I transition to different foods and get more used to a schedule things should improve. When I feel a little stronger I can get out and do more stuff too, hopefully start being more active. -
Any Vegetarians or Vegans Who've Had the Gastric Sleeve?
Apple1 replied to Frmbandtosleeve's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have been transitioning to WFPB for about 2.5 weeks. I am still eating a little bit of dairy mostly yogurt and whey protein which is in the shake I drink every morning. I was 3 months post-op on Aug. 15th, and I feel that because I am almost at goal already, and I am completely healed, there is no reason to consume more than about 50-55g of protein a day. I make a shake for breakfast which has 20g and then I am able to get another 25-35g through eating legumes, whole grain brown rice, fruits and veggie, nuts, and seeds.. I would not be able to consume enough food to meet my protein goals without drinking the morning shake everyday. My restriction is still too much to allow me to eat much more than I am. I think some people maybe able to eat more or even less so you will have to see how you do. I am doing fine eating this way and I am still losing weight. I am not hungry and I am not worried at all about my health or progress. -
Hi Im 6 days post op and drinking any clear liquid. Broth, water, crystal light, sugar free popsicles etc. for this first week. On Friday I get to add thin yogurt and cream soup with no chunks. I have not had to sip sip sip. And temperature was never limited. I make sure I am getting at least 60oz of liquids in me a day. I don't guzzle down anything fast, but drink at a normal pace all day.

How much can you eat?
dashofsunshine replied to DropWt4Life's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do six small "meals" per day - snacks and meals are all basically the same size, usually 5-6 bites. Sample menu is usually something like: Breakfast - One egg poached or scrambled and one link turkey sausage (this morning I managed 3 bites of scrambled egg, and that's it. It just varies on how tight my sleeve is that day) "Snack" 1 - handful of almonds or 1/3 cup of cottage cheese Lunch - half a fresh pack of starkist tuna over a few pieces of romaine lettuce, or a deli turkey/cheese roll up (no bread or wrap or anything) and a couple olives "Snack" 2 - usually a protein shake - I run half marathons and lift heavy, so I like to have a shake after my daily run/workout. Mixed with 6 oz unsweetened almond milk, and I just sip on it for a while. Dinner - whatever I cook for that night. I cook every night for myself and my husband - I have what I call an "arsenal" of high protein, low carb meals that I've been cooking for 3 years, and we rotate weekly menus. I add new ones as I experiment in the kitchen or find them on Pinterest. Last night dinner was low carb pesto chicken bake and my famous roasted broccoli. I managed 3 bites of chicken and 2 of broccoli. After dinner snack - usually something like 1/3 cup light & fit yogurt, or a few baby carrots with Greek yogurt ranch. Depends on what I'm feeling like! Sometimes I skip the after dinner snack, if I'm not hungry. -
Federal Fep BC/BS Delaware - Approval in less than 6 hours!
Tat19808 replied to Tat19808's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was in the same boat. I had a 7 Lb window that I HAD to maintain - that was the hardest thing to do. I was lucky that Federal BC/BS only required 3 months of Nutrition and what not opposed to other company's 6 months. But we've made it! Trying to stay in my window, I really tried to watch what I ate, which I always try to do. Since I was approved, I was now told that I can relax - just don't go crazy. I another night of all you can eat crabs, a steak dinner with all the sides, another night at a Fondue restaurant, another visit to a winery, and then to a brewery. That's it - Not that I won't have these again, well not anytime soon , nor in this quantity. Just in case my taste buds change and don't like these things anymore, I want one last taste. Did you have to track what you were eating for a week to see how much protein you were eating? I could not believe how little I consuming! What an eye-opener! Someone had told me to freeze Protein drinks - Like Muscle Milk/ Premier Protein to have high protein popsicle snacks. I guess you could do that with Greek Yogurt too. I think tonight it will really hit me..... What is your Pre-Op Diet? Mine is something called Robard - it's 4 meal replacement "Things" a day. Shakes/drinks/soups/pudding.... and can drink Gatorade, low sodium broth as fillers -
I am no longer eating eggs, dairy, or any animal products with a few exceptions 1. Yogurt- I am still eating this 2-3 times a week. 2. Wild Salmon- I ate 2oz of this last weekend, but most likely will not eat it again. I will continue to cook it for my hubby though. 3. The whey protein in my Chike protein coffee shake. I am not stopping this anytime soon. Thank you for posting the recipe though as I am sure there are still some vegetarians reading this thread that are still eating eggs. I just can't do it anymore after all I have learned.

Wanting to talk with someone that's had this done
SydSyd replied to KikiSue🙋🏼's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
I emailed them to set up a consult, and was able to schedule one within a week of initially contacting them. The consult consisted of visiting with the doctor performing the surgery and a nurse, and filling out their intake forms about prior history. Within a couple days of the consult visit I was able to schedule a date for the procedure, also through email, and had to put an initial payment down to hold the date. The cost is $16,000 total- if you need to split it into payments it is one payment of $6,000 and another of $10,000 due no later than a week before the procedure (I think, I don't remember specific instructions). Hopefully after submitting the claim to insurance I will be reimbursed, but I know that I cannot be guaranteed this. So initial consult was in June or July, date of procedure was scheduled for about 5-6 weeks after. The cost includes 12 visits with the weight loss clinic, which consists of nutritionist, therapist and doctors you can visit (each person you see counts as one "visit"). There was no prep work before hand, I did not need any tests done or to visit my primary care or anything. I had to visit with the weight-loss "team" for the initial visits prior to the procedure - they conducted metabolic testing and a body composition estimate, the doctor did blood work but that was after I asked if they could to check my blood sugar (which I wasn't sure about), I don't think it was standard. So the intake visit with 4 people counted as 4 of my 12 included visits. I have a follow up in 2 weeks with the therapist, it's up to you to choose who to visit for the best results for you. They really stress that this is about reprogramming how you eat and your attitude about food - yes the medical part of forcing your stomach smaller is going to have an effect on how much you eat, and therefore your initial loss, but it's really about you continuing to apply these smaller portions on your own afterwards. The procedure itself is so very minimally invasive, there was never any concern about dangers during the procedure other than the anesthesia. Pain was never really bad, and has gone by now. They prescribed me pain meds (a liquid Tylenol-codeine), but honestly the pain level was never really high. Very sore throat the first 2/3 days, some discomfort with stomach cramps/spasms (but they give you something for that too). My stomach hurt initially- but nothing like I had expected. I took the pain meds the first day and second to help me just sleep through the discomfort. Honestly I didn't feel any pain at all after 2 days and haven't needed the pain meds since the second or third day. (I had my gall bladder removed last year, and even that hurt worse than this, and that was a very easy procedure to get over after a couple days) So within 4/5 days afterwards, no pain, hardly any nausea (depends on what you eat- you have to pay very close attention to how your body reacts to everything now, before during and after eating anything). My biggest issue is trying to get enough fluids and to eat anything at all- even several small sips makes me feel full, and food just doesn't seem to sit well. At one of my visits the nutritionist gave me a 3oz cup (the paper kind that you would have in the bathroom or at the dentist to brush your teeth and rinse your mouth)- this is the approximate size of what you can eat. A sample menu from he nutritionist includes drinking fluids, then na hour later eating 2 tablespoons of something like yogurt or a smoothie - 2 tablespoons is considered a "meal" at this point. You are to alternate liquids and puréed food over the course of the day, waiting an hour in between each. The doctor said I should expect to lose 40-50% of the excess weight over the course of a year. There are no staples - The sutures are expected to dissolve around 9-12 months, after which your stomach can return to normal size over time- again they stress this is about relearning how and what to eat, so that you do not fall back into the same patterns as before. I did not tell anyone other than my SO and parents (although I believe my mother may have taken it upon herself to tell other extended family, which I am not thrilled about - under the guise of "how happy they are bc they were so worried about my(my) size" which I do not believe, it's just gossip for them), but there is no way I could've hidden that I was in the hospital or had something done if anyone had seen me that day or the next. The procedure was on a Friday - on Sunday I skipped my friends wedding shower, even though I probably could've gone and just hung out for a hour or 2 just sitting around, I would not have felt up to participating or socializing much so I skipped it. I was back to work Monday and so far this week, but in short periods so I can go back and be around home in case I have a bathroom emergency..... All in all, super easy physical recovery as far as pain/nausea - but very very difficult to figure out how to eat, even with their instructions and guidelines and availability to help...shopping ahead of time didn't help much, as I can't tolerate the broths that I got (the only one I could get through was the blandest ramen broth possible, without the noodles), and I'm not ready yet for the protein drinks...right now it's a couple small bites of baby food, pudding, or yogurt ( which I just tried today) hours apart and forcing yourself to sip on Gatorade/liquids. -
Help, Please.

I am now keeping a food journal of what I eat. I am eating around 1000 calories a day, about 54 protein, 66 carbs, 23 fat. I've cut out the banana and yogurt. Oh my goodness. I AM prepared for rough patches. I know and have experienced rough patches. Not losing weight after two weeks has NEVER happened to me before. I was down and needed encouragement and advice, not criticism. -

Help, Please.
Lovergurl replied to Deleted Account's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You should try without the yogurt and the banana and the protein bar if it has high carbs. My Dr has me on the Atkins phase 1 and it's working. I did have one last "weekend" of splurging but then got to business at the two month point. My attitude is this is my new life. I better get used to it. I do drink a lot of water. Still having a morning coffee with just cream. And, I'm having lots of veggies if I'm craving a bit less protein. Cravings are gone. I'm staying at about 1200 cal a day. YES that tired feeling is there, its the lack of carbs. But it seems to be just in the morning. By the end of the day, I have plenty of energy. But bed time comes and I am out like a light, getting plenty of sleep. There could be a dozen different things to cause you to not lose. Try more protein, more movement, more water. But the one guy is right. Read what he is saying not how he is saying it. You have to get through this rough patch to prepare yourself for surgery. It's important to lower your risks and that needs to be your focus. One step at a time. -

Anyone have a hard time eating breakfast?
Sullie06 replied to dreamingsmall's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 8 months post op and I cannot eat first thing in the am. I typically wake up about 6 am and eat breakfast, which usually just consists of greek yogurt, around 8 am. I then have a mid morning snack and will eat lunch around 1 pm. -
If you have reached goal and kept the weight off....
Introversion replied to Katie Loesch-Meyer's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I probably go through 20+ packets of Equal and Sweet-N-Low per day. I add it to my coffee, iced tea, herbal teas, and plain yogurt. I don't get intense cravings and have maintained my body weight with precision since entering maintenance one year ago.
