    Flying after LapBand

I flew across the country after 2 days. (Had my surgery in MX and flew home with my hubby to central Indiana on the second post-op day) I'm not a good flyer - I have extreme motion sickness. I used my Transderm SCOP patch and did fine. Then 6 weeks post-op I had to fly to New York for business and did fine.

    Aspirin

I know aspirin is not recommended for Sleeved patients, but it's the only thing that works for me in catching a headache early before it turns into a migraine. Otherwise it's Percocet and a dark room. I see my surgeon tomorrow for my 10-week check, and plan on begging then, but in the meantime, anyone still use aspirin on occasion? TIA, Lisa
  6. Yes, this. Exactly! Divorce is the word that's been rattling around in my head! I'm so happy that you're doing OK, and excited about what's ahead. You sound like you're in a really similar head-space to where I am, but my surgery is just over a week away. I was talking with a friend the other day...she is one of the few people who know my plans. She thinks my wanting a divorce from food is a bit dysfunctional, and is recommending I get counselling. I think I will do that, but I stand firm in wanting a drastic change in the way I live my life. I'm so tired of everything--from family gatherings, to work functions, religious celebrations, and even my book club for goodness sakes--being about food!
  7. I had my surgery on June 12th and i have to say i feel amazing! I was expecting the typical shoulder pain and bloat that i have experienced with other surgeries that i have had, but i surprisingly didn't have them at all. I left the hospital on day 3 with a drain that had to stay in for a week and i wasn't allowed to leave the hospital until i could get down two 8 oz shakes, which i was able to do by 4:30pm. The next day my husband and i walked through the mall (slowly) and i stayed as active as possible for the entire weekend with a short nap in the middle of the day. By monday i was feeling normal and was virtually pain free. I have only taken the anti inflammatory that i was prescribed once a day since then. Overall i can say i have had an amazing experience and love the fact that I AM NOT HUNGRY. My relationship with food has changed for the better and i am so happy that i will no longer be controlled by piles of unhealthy choices and lack of will-power. I love the unjury shakes and the chicken Soup flavor is nice for something warm and savory. Down 11 lbs since my surgery date and couldn't be happier to see that my efforts are finally showing up on the scale!

    tilted port?

So I go in for a fill next week but the fill I had 6 weeks ago was.....interesting. he had to dig around a little to hit center and I was a bit concerned and he said that I've lost so much weight that the fat around my port area has probably gone away so now its tilted and assured me it was nothing to be concerned about I was wondering though if anyone else had this happen?
  9. I am scheduled to have ankle surgery in November and my primary physician said it shouldn't interfere with my weight loss surgery. I will be in a leg cast during this time and out of work for 8 weeks. I would really like to also use the time to recover from weight loss surgery if I can get it into this time frame. has anyone ever put two surgeries like this together?
  10. I think I have almost all my ducks in a row and my surgery is booked for the first week of November. I am wondering about the in-hotel nursing care though, has anyone used the service recommended by SWLC? My husband can't travel with me (has to work/watch kids) so I will be alone in TO. I need to have someone pick me up and stay with me for the night after surgery, and SWLC included a pamphlet for Homecare that I can call. They are $20 per hour plus mileage to the hotel, which is fairly dear considering the amount of hours I will need someone ---- Did you use them? Any tips to minimize this bill? Thanks.

    June 6th!

June 6 is my surgery date as well. I plan on taking the following week off and returning to work on Monday, June 18-- thankfully I have an office job so shouldn't be a problem. I start my pre surgery liquid diet this upcoming Thursday & know its going to be tough but just telling myself that it's only for 2 weeks before & of course 2 weeks after... I can do anything for 4 weeks (I hope!! GULP). I am having some anxiety about the entire thing. I have never had surgery before so this is all foreign ground for me. But I know that this is what I need to do. Best to luck to you in the upcoming weeks!!
  13. Ok, so I am supposed to have my surgery next Wednesday, November 7th. This has been a long process from the start because the hospital doing my procedure just started doing lap bands, and they didn't really have their shit together to begin with (pardon my language). I went to my seminar at the beginning of August, and they just finally finalized the surgeon fees 2 days ago, and finalized the hospital fees last week. They also made a mistake on when I wanted my surgery, when I told them from the beginning that I wanted it the week of the 5th because that's the only time I have off work. (Did I mention I have also worked at this hospital for almost 10 years and have never seen such disorganization on their part?) Long story short, it was conveyed to me by the bariatric center that since I am self pay, I would have to put a down payment down, and would be able to pay the rest off with a payment plan. I went to see the surgeon yesterday, and they were going to make me pay their fees upfront. I was like "Whoa-that's not what has been told to me for the last few months, and I never gave the bariatric center the impression I would be able to pay you upfront. It was my impression that they had spoken with you specifically about me and it was agreed upon between the surgeons and the bariatric center that I would be able to do a payment plan." So, the financial services rep went and talked to someone, and came back, and said that was fine, since I had already gone this far and seen the doctor, that they would let me pay the remainder off over a 12 month period. I signed a contract stating as such. So, this morning, I went and had all my preop tests-chest xray, upper GI series, pulmonary testing, EKG, labs, and a meeting with the dietician. So I'm psyched, right? Then I leave the hospital, and my cell phone rings. It is the financial services girl from the surgeons office telling me that she talked my surgery over with the doctor, and that they are not going to let me do the payment plan, but are instead requiring that I pay upfront. Granted, they did offer to give a discount, but I still do not have that money lying around, and made it clear from the start that I did not. So I am extremely frustrated right now. Now I feel like I can't necessarily even trust the surgeon doing my surgery or the bariatric center. My grandma offered to loan me the required money, but I am having such mixed feelings about what transpired that I don't even know what to do. Sorry for the lengthy post, but does anyone have an opinion on this?? Thanks! :help:

    What Exercises Are Ok???

My doctor said that cardio was ok after 1 week and lifting weight should wait at least 1 mo post op. I would assume that after about 6-8 wks you should be ok to do what you would like.
  15. I had my surgery last Tuesday. A little disappointed that I have not lost more weight. Gained coming out of the hospital because of the IV's, I am sure. Guess I wanted it to just fall off...guess that won't happen since it didn't come on over night. Still on liquids for another week before I get to puree my food. My doctor was Dr. Monte Schwartz, Tucson, AZ.
  16. I went to my first support group last week, and i was the only one there that was getting the band, they were trying to convince me to get the sleeve, but im sticking with the band
  17. That is awesome. I am ready to start some exercise, I am tired of just walking. I just bought a couple of bikes for me and my wife but I have to wait for the 6th week to ride. How do your incisions and stomach feel after raquetball?

    Banded 24.4.2012

Hi JessRess, Thanks for saying Hi. How are you feeling being Day 6? I hear this is the hardest part of the journey. My back is aching a little and feel a little winded but apart from that im feeling great. Also just brought a great multi for women and some probiotics for the tummy seeing i will be lacking nutrients over the coming weeks!
  19. Hi! I was banded on March 2nd 2005. I have done pretty well so far, I started out at 185 and am now at 169. I had my first fill last Wed. (6 days ago) without flouro. In the few weeks before the fill I could eat anything I wanted. I did fine and felt restriction for the 1st 3 or 4 days after my fill, but sure enough yesterday and today I'm back to being able to eat like pre-band times!! He put 1.6cc's in my 4cc band, and said that should give me good restriction for a few months!! Needless to say I'm bummed about it being only a few days and I feel like its gone. I'm wondering since Im a lower BMI patient if I should expect to not feel the restriction as much as others?? I know my weight loss has been good up to this point and I shouldnt complain, but I've had to use as much willpower as before the band..... Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Monica
  20. Hi Monica - Your initial restriction from your fill was undoubtedly due to your stomach swelling after the adjustment. I would give it a few weeks to settle in before you decide this current fill is too little - you will probably find (like most of us) that your restriction can vary from day to day, and you may feel wide open one day and slammed shut the next. My fills didn't really kick in until 4-6 weeks afterwards (no idea why). I am not a lower BMI patient, but fills seem to be fills. Your fill level may tend to be a little higher than higher BMI patients (at first, anyway), but that would most likely be due to less fat around your stomach. So the real answer is - this is not happening to you because you are a low BMI patient. This is a typical response to fills.
  21. I am super excited to be posting this and I made this thread to not only see everyone's nsv's but for people who aren't loosing to come to this thread to get encouragement! Lately my weight loss has slowed down I loose about 1-2 lbs a week here lately before I was loosing anywhere between 5-6 lbs a week.....anyways to make a long story short I've been in a size 16 for over a month now and I went and bought a size 13 before I was even in the 16's because I knew eventually I would get there well 2 days ago I was able to put on those 13's, granted they were tight and made my flabby stomach poke out at the top I was still able to get them on and button and zip them!!! I won't be wearing them out in public for awhile until I can more comfortably fit in them but I just had to share this experience with all of you!
  22. I am needing some advice, but need it from someone who has their port in their shoulder area. I was banded on March 12th and my port is located in my shoulder area- between my breast and my arm pit. I am 5 weeks postop but it still hurts at night when I lay on it and I needed to know if this is normal. If nobody has had it placed there, I will have to call my surgeon and ask them, but I just thought if I could have the question answered on here, it would save time and I wouldn't bother them. Thanks!

    Quitting Smoking..

I just quit cold turkey and it has been a week for me. Just one day when I ran out of cigarettes I decided I didn't want to screw with it anymore. I quit before twice and picked it back up for varying reasons. This time I hope it's for good but I live with 2 smokers so it is going to be tough.

    Doctor Confusion

I noticed that you were thinking about going to Mexico for your band. I know lots of people have a great experience there and save lots of money. If there are no complications, it is a great deal. But have you thought about what happens if there is a complication? Do you think that an insurance company would cover the expenses for complications of a foreign installed medical device? From my experience from working at a weight loss clinic, I would say most likely not. I’m all for going to Mexico. God knows I am crazy about Tijuana tacos! My dad had major dental surgery there and so forth and it was satisfactory I guess. The thing is that if you want to save money somewhere, why go el cheapo (if you will) with your body? Take the time to save up the extra money so you have the insurance that someone will be able to take care of you that isn’t a three hour drive across the boarder. By the way, I work at a place that sees patients that does work on people with foreign bands and they come in at least every couple weeks. Granted I only hear about the bad examples and not the people that have had good experiences in Mexico. Nevertheless, based on the examples that I’ve seen, there is no way I would allow anyone in my family to get their band outside of the US.

    Doctor Confusion

Well, Clay, since my insurance paid for my band in Mexico, yes, i would expect them to cover complications. I really don't have any fears for that. I would probably go to Dr Ortiz for any problems I have anyway. I could have had the surgery in the US and my insurance would have paid for it, but after seeing Dr Ortiz and his clinic when my daughter went there in 2006, my husband and I felt that was definitely the right choice for us. None of the three of us has had any problem or complication whatsoever.
