Bumps In The Road To The Losers Bench

I have Kaiser insurance and after getting the referral from Kaiser, the surgeon said my BMI was on the borderline and that I couldn't have the procedure. What they had done was make an assumption that I had no comorbities because I wasn't taking any kind of medications for HBP, Diabetes, etc. Well I was diabetic and was taking lisnipril to protect my kidneys but the PA thought that was for HBP. I did reschedule an appointment closer to my surgery date to check on my weight status. I was trying to gain weight but couldn't. Finally, after further discussion with the surgeon, she rechecked and told me I was good to go. Up to the AM of the surgery, I actually believed that they were going to deny the surgery at the last minute. Low and behold, I got my sleeve and I'm totally happy by 150%, Some days I do want to eat a big meal but can't. I'm still adjusting to my new eating regime.
  3. I think he most basic way to explain it is, weight loss causes horomone changes, which in turn mess with your cycle. For some, it's a good thing, for some it's bad. Personally, my cycle has gotten shorter, and my last period was a light 3 days. That is a big big difference from how it was before. Your cycle will eventually even back out again, but it may ake some time.

    Stopped Losing, Help!

You're not doing anything wrong. You aren't going to lose weight every single day. Your body has to catch up. You will go through numerous stalls. You will have times where you lose inches instead of pounds. It's normal. But, you will not see that scale drop daily. Of that, I am positive. You have to burn 3500 calories to lose a pound. Just hang in there and don't worry. It will come off. Slower is better anyway because you have less skin sagging and perhaps less hair loss.

    UGH ...

In response to the 6 flags dilemma, this makes me sad. Your husband obviously loves you - he committed to spend the rest of his life with you!!! If this is a friend of his, he will likely love you too - for making his friend happy. The fact that you might be slimmer 2-3 months from now is not the answer. You are still YOU!!! That is enough, even if you never lose the weight. Please do not stop living because the weight shames you. Weight is not the answer (not denying that that it adds dramatically to our sense of self worth, but...) you are! Go have fun with the man who loves you and his friend. Keep trying on the pre-op diet. If it's any consolation I am 3 weeks out and just gained 2 lbs!! Sucky, but not uncommon. Were you close to getting your period when you had to weigh in? that often adds a lot of weight (probably my gain). Also your profile pic- adorable!! Get out there with your bad self and live a little.

    Ketosis????

I remember that weird taste in my mouth. Nothing tasted good for weeks which helped with the initial weight loss. If you can have any protein that is not sweet that may help. But otherwise, just hold out. It will eventually go away. I was light-headed for about 4 days and then survivied the liquids without much of a problem which was a huge surprise. I was more worried about the 2 weeks on liquid than the surgery. Funny what we get fixaited on.
  8. This is exaclty where I sit now. I've lost half of my excess weight with the band. Now it's up to me to get the rest off. But a little excercise and diet adjustment and I'm back on the weightloss wagon. The best news is- odds are pretty good that you will NEVER gain back the lost weight. How many people who diet and diet and diet can say that. Megan

    Newbie

I have tried sooo many diets and think I'm ready to resort to WLS. I haven't even told my husband that I scheduled an appointment for a lap band consult on 2/8/11. I also scheduled my psych visit that morning. The insurance specialist told me I would need to have a sleep study done. I feel sooo overwhelmed with the feeling that my insurance will not pay for this. I do have lap band benefits, but my BMI is 36. I know that if I continue without surgery my weight will continue to increase. I have BCBS insurance. Has anyone had surgery with a BMI of 36...did insurance cover?...were you self pay? I am curious to know how much the procedure will cost if I decide to go the self pay route. Any info will be appreciated. Everyone is such an inspiration on here.
  10. You also must realize that a lot of people don't just come to the board to say, "Yay, I am doing great!" Many come for inspiration, help, or just to complain. I don't do much posting, just commenting, because I am having great success with my band. I know many people who have not returned to this board after surgery because they are successful and don't want to see the negativity. The nerve pain is something that I, myself, have not experienced. ElfiePoo, I think, is a good one to talk to about that. You might want to message her. Picking a band - I have the lap-band. My doctor does both and I just left it up to him to decide which was right for me. I would ask for a low profile port. The location of the port seems pretty much the same, somewhere in the belly, but mine is different. My port is located right above my left breast. I can feel it and it is easily accessed. Also, it is less likely to be visible after the weight loss. Even if it does protrude a little, a bra strap or bathing suit will keep it covered. I have never felt misled! My doctor and his staff were great in preparing me for my journey. I feel that I was well informed. My advice to you is to just be sure you are mentally ready for this journey. If you are not, you will most likely fail. There are foods that you will not be able to eat again. You have to learn to eat to live, not live to eat. Enjoy what you eat. Don't eat senslessly. And always know you limits. Good Luck!
  11. I find I lose more weight if I eat a sensible healthy diet and I like to include some fruit and a few nuts and seeds in my diet. They only way I can do this is to have it as Snacks and it hasn't slowed up my weight loss, quite the reverse as I have lost 70lbs since last August. If it works for you, then carry on as you are. As Jachut says, some people can't stop eating if they have a snack but for others it is part of your routine. Sue

Need some help with stats, please?

Hi everyone.... I've been trying since I signed up to change my stats that show here in my profile... the highest weight, current weight, etc... and I just can't tell where to change that info. On 'edit my profile' I only can edit certain things, but not those. Can someone help? The stats are wrong, including my HW (which shows an incorrect weight)... just frustrated. Any help with this would be awesome. Thanks so much in advance.
  13. You won't be weaker, you'll be stronger. Your body is still adjusting from major surgery and your body is changing daily due to weight loss. Are you taking your vitamins? Getting in 60-70g protein daily? That'll help.

What kind of exercise is "moderate"?

congrats on your weight loss... i use the elliptical trainer for 30-minutes a day - 4-days a week... I was doing an hour prior to being banded.. I don't want to over do it.. but i would ask the Dr. to see what they say for you... But what u are doing as far as walking is fine.. i would not try running yet.. just my opinion...
  15. So my doctor's written post-op instructions state that "you may begin moderate exercise 7-10 days after surgery". What do you think is "moderate"? I've been walking on my treadmill -- not real fast, and not for more than 15-20 minutes at a time so far. I should mention that I need a hip replacement and I have pain in my hip that makes it challenging for me to walk for very long. The hip surgeon doesn't want to do surgery until I lose some weight. So anyway..... I'm trying to start out fairly slow in hopes that I don't wake up one of these days to find that I over-did it and the hip pain is so bad that I can't exercise at all. So last week I got a Wii Fit. Wow I love that thing! Again, I'm starting out slow with it. It has step aerobics which I always wanted to do but I never joined any classes in a gym, because I knew I couldn't keep up with everyone. I'm a real klutz but I'm getting better at the step aerobics and have advanced from the really brief easy beginner level to a slightly faster paced, longer lasting level. The other thing I did was an exercise where you run in place. It shows your little Mii (your own little character on the TV) running along, and the idea is to keep up with but not pass the pace setting Mii in front of you. I stopped running 20 years ago but this is really pretty slow paced and lasts about 3-4 minutes and it isn't nearly as high impact as actually running on the street. I really am looking forward to the day when I'm not feeling winded at the end of that little run. But suddenly today it occurred to me (don't ask me why I didn't think about this sooner)..... should I even be doing gentle running in place 14 days after surgery? Could I dislodge the port? I'll go to a support group meeting at my doctor's office next week and I can ask these questions but it's Friday night and I just wonder what you all think.

    Port Concerns

I am by no means an expert, but I would imagine that as the swelling in your stomach goes down you will find that your port does "move". As I have lost weight, my port is in a slightly different postion than when I started.
  17. I commend you on your research and hope you come to a decision you feel comfortable with. As for me...I am approximately 1 & 1/2 months out of surgery. I have had 0 issues, problems, etc. (including no PBing, stuck, or probs with food). I have not experienced any nerve pain, port pain, etc. I never got the horrible gas in the shoulders after surgery like some got, mine stayed around the abdomen area & was not bad. I have the Lap Band brand and my surgeon made that decision. I read lots of information before my surgery and talked with a fellow bander who gave me even more information. I feel like between my surgeon, his staff, my research, & the nutritionists, I had a great deal of knowledge going into this journey. This forum was amazing in letting me hear the good and the bad from people who already had the band. I know I am not far in this journey and have a LONG way to go, but I am so much further than I was 2 years ago when I first began my documentation with insurance. I know there may be a time when a certain food may not agree with me or I may get stuck or sick or something, but when I imagine myself without the band getting bigger and bigger and missing out on things with my family, I'll gladly take a little potential inconvenience down the road. I think one thing that has helped me is to track what I eat on my phone. I was successful with weight loss several years ago, but without the band to help curtail hunger, I slipped back into my old ways and regained all my weight plus. At least now, I have something to help keep me satisfied with less, plus a team of nurses, nutritionists, a surgeon, etc. to help keep me on track. Good luck in your decision. I wish you the best.
  18. How fast did you go through sizes after your surgery? I tended to wear most of my clothes pretty fitted already but so far everything still fits exactly the same even though I'm down almost 30lbs. (I know like half of that was Water weight) I kind of carry my weight weird, so I think that probably has something to do it with but I was just curious what everyone else's experiences were.

    Arm "wings", anyone?

I hear ya,,, me too. I have been lifting weights in hopes. My girlfriend had her arms and belly done after a year, so I think I will probably be doing the same.

    Honeymoon Period...

Well, you will see with the more posts you read that there definately is a honeymoon period. It varies somewhat for each person, but in general, expect to see your weight loss drop off anywhere from 3 to 6 months. It kind of depends on what your starting weight is and how closely you follow the recommended eating plans. If you have a higher starting weight and you stay on plan, you will likely have a little longer honeymoon period. There are some people who struggle with staying away from poor food choices early on and it will affect weight loss. I know someone personally who actually had surgery the same day as me and approximately the same starting weight as me (see my signature/ ticker line) and I think she may be down about 50# but I also know she has not been following the guidelines consistently- yet she struggles to understand why she hasn't lost more weight. She complains about all the bad temptations around her, why she can't do this or do that... I have tried to remain a support person in her life, but she has started to pull back in the last month or so which I attribute to the fact that I am just a reminder of how much she hasn't lost. It's ok to be a "slow looser", but if its because we aren't compliant with the guidelines, then we do jeopardize our long term success.

    Honeymoon Period...

I don't believe that there is a honey moon period. I believe that we are able to work our sleeve and lose weight. In the beginning, we had a tendency to loose at a llittle faster rate due to very low calorie intake. Our stomachs are so swollen. Can't wait until you join us on the BIG LOSER'S BENCH!

    Help Please.

I did the Medifast diet in the summer of 07. I did well with it and lost about 55 pounds in about 3.5 months. Of course, it all came back once I stopped the diet. My suggestion is to make sure that you are doing your 5 MF meals + your 1 lean & green. Make sure you are also getting enough calories. I would always try to get between 850 and 1000 calories a day. If I fell anywhere below that, I would not lose weight. Drink plenty of water also. I hope these couple of tips helped. I wish you well on your journey.

    Gastric Bypass VS Sleeve

Jenna: I wound up having an RNY because I am on Medicare, and in California, Medicare will pay only for the Lap/Band or the RNY. Before that, I thought I would want the Sleeve because it would be easier. In the end only you can decide. I did to want the Lap/Band. I am now so glad that I had the RNY. It is, perhaps, the hardest adjustment. But I am losing a lot of weight. Your surgeon should have an opinion this. You weigh 260 and are 5 ft 3. There are a lot of questions when figuring out your qualification. Do you have any co-morbidities like diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure? Along with your BMI, all of those issues are factored in to the plan. If a doctor has referred you, you can probably qualify.
  25. Thanks for the info! I realize that there is often a desire to tighten everything up - especially after kids and all, nevermind with weight loss. What I am trying to figure out is if I will legitimately NEED the plastic surgery. I have to lose 178 lbs. and I have seen people with that type of weight loss where the skin just hangs off them in huge folds. Which of course leads to rashes, sores, etc beyond just the issue of wanting to get rid of all the excess skin. So I am just trying to see if anyone else has lost that type of weight and not had such a severe problem. That's why I tried to specify between the actual NEED and just wanting to tighten it all up. Should I edit the poll? I tried to make it simple but still get the info I was looking for - I had hoped that between the poll and the first post, it would be clear what I was looking for, but now I'm not sure! Anyway, thanks for the helpful information it is always great to hear from people further down the road on this and so successful - it is so inspiring and gives me confidence that I can really do this and make it work for me. So thanks again!!
