    Protein slowing weightloss down?

If you go WAY over your Protein needs, the excess protein can be stored as fat. Here's what livestrong.com has to say about it: In the Unites States, protein intake generally exceeds requirement. After protein completes its functions, the extra protein becomes a source of energy. This is fine as long as there is energy balance and the intake of energy does not exceed energy expenditure. When carbohydrate and fat intakes meet energy requirement, then the energy from protein is not necessary. Since protein cannot be stored as such, the body converts the extra protein into fat deposits. In this indirect manner, extra protein contributes to weight gain. Read more: http://www.livestron.../#ixzz2X4g3L6az It sounds like what they're saying is that we need to balance protein intake with exercise, to make sure any excess isn't stored in our bodies as fat. Also, our bodies can't absorb more than about 15-20 grams of protein per hour--so doubling up on protein might not give us any real benefit. More about protein absorption: http://www.livestrong.com/article/480054-how-much-protein-can-we-absorb-per-meal/

    Deja Vu all over again

And I'm a happy camper too. This happens in a small % of patients. He will be using a 36 bougie this time instead of a 40. Most of my sleeve is fine. There is just a herniated bulge just under my stomach/esophagus junction (gastroesophageal sphincter). The theory is that once this gets tightened up, the tissue will not be so elastic. I'm not really a grazer (too busy) and everything was hunky dory until the weight gain started a year ago.

I was on it before surgery and continued on it after surgery. You are talking about celexa correct? That's generic drugs's name. I know it can cause weight gain so they will be monitoring me as I get further out. Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

    So frusterated!

If all you can eat is Soups (slider foods) and real food comes back up, there's a good chance you're too tight. Being tight can actually lead to weight gain because you're unable to eat a healthy, balanced diet. I would discuss it with your doctor if I were in your shoes
  6. The dr had recommended to not weigh ourselves until our first post op appt since she didn't want us freaking out over possible weight gain from the hospital so I don't know the 1st week. 2 weeks after surgery down 13lbs, 3rd week 18, I stalled for two weeks then 5 weeks down 22. I'm 11 weeks now and as of the beginning of this week I'm down almost 33lbs.

    So is SEX better now?

Been with my husband for 23 yrs, married for almost 19. We've always been known to be extremely physically attracted to each other, even with our weight gain over the yrs. my husband has no problem dropping pounds, where it was never easy for me. But sex has always been great. NOW, after the sleeve is a different incredible experience. While hubbie was very supportive during my struggle to get healthy, surgery or not, I think he's happier than I am now. I think he thinks he has a new wife. I laugh & tell him I'm new & improved. Lol... Everything has gotten smaller, not worried about that because I was a size 3/4 when I met my husband & a 5/6 when we married. So not worried about him seeing my small boobs, smaller bottom, or my very very small scars. Yes, I feel more confident that I no long look like I am pregnant. No longer have to spend hundreds of $$$$ on body magic garments to tuck stomach. Everything has shrunk to both our liking & appreciation. And still shrinking. When I say everything has shrunk, it's left one thing exposed quite often. "Not being shy, right?" So when I walk or sit, I'm turned on. Incredible!!!!!! So you can only imagine what happens by the time I meet up with my husband thoughtful the days. Funny that we do stuff now that I don't recall doing years ago when I was a size 7-8. We laugh now only saying I was still being "conservative" then, now that we really really now & respect each other, the things we do, WOW!!!! I new found attraction. Oh so happy!!!!!

  9. I was banded Thursday, and had a 1 week pre-op liquid diet prior. I did not do a " last meal" and stuck to the diet . My question is, if I literally not had a solid thing to eat in a week, protein shakes, soups and water. Is it normal to have gained weight ? I weighed in Thursday at 191, and 2 days later I am at 192. Could this just be bloat weight? I'm confused?

    Appetite Suppressants

I asked for phentermine a couple of weeks after my band was deflated because I could not control the weight gain. Doc was only willing to give me the lowest possible dosage and it wasn't doing anything except making me act bitchy. So I didn't use it. I've done well on higher dosages in the past. I know how you feel. Right now your stomach is stretched from the band. I was so hungry! The good news is every pound I gained feel off within two weeks post op. I had no pre op diet. Now just under five weeks out I am less than I was when they unfilled me.

    regreting this whole thing

Oh Janice5/32, did you start gaining weight in the first place and become overweight because you were feeling insecure about what you felt was a boylike figure? Maybe just subconsciously? If so, that might explain your intense discontent. You think you are heading to your worst fear, one that you had already "fixed" by the weight gain. (Our brains don't "fix" things very well, do they?!) That must be tough, knowing you did the right thing for health but still feeling it was so wrong. It's a definite disconnect, for sure, but I think you just weren't prepared to deal with that part. Especially at 23! It's a tough age of self discovery. And I think I understand, as at one of my more successful weight loss program schemes (I've tried them all!), I did a hypnosis course/support group thing. It was rather enlightening to learn that some of us gain some of this weight without realizing it as a form of protection. I myself have always had difficulty dealing the right way with attention from men, so after a failed engagement (wherein my fiance jerkface slept with his coworker's super skinny girlfriend, how cliche!), I ballooned well past my usual safety plumpness as I NEVER wanted to feel that betrayal pain again...so I was "protecting myself" by ensuring that I was the one ignored at the bar with my thinner friends, and feeling like I was in control by having taken myself out of the game completely. Which lead to never leaving my house, which lead to more weight gain, rinse, repeat. Of course, there are many reasons I'm overweight (all of which I take responsibility for), but that was an aspect of it that has been "working" for me. But now five years of this with a brand new high blood pressure diagnosis and and some intense latent loneliness later, I believe I'm ready to change all that and not be afraid of what happens if I'm not invisible anymore, or to not have the overweight thing be something I can point to as THE REASON WHY NOTHING WORKS IN MY LIFE. Yes, it's a scapegoat, and I'm ready to see what it's like without it. It will be tough, I know, without my tubby suit of armor. I'll probably be all "THE REASON NOTHING WORKS IN MY LIFE NOW ARE THESE FLAPPY BAT WING ARMS AND THIS SAGGY PANNIS I HAVE TO TUCK INTO MY PANTS", hehe. But you only live once, and I'm ready to hurtle into that unknown, as the other rare times I've taken a chance in my life usually turn out pretty good. Although I think that my view may be opposite of the way you are seeing; as maybe you are afraid of becoming more invisible in a way you intensely fear or somesuch, but it's a similar thought process, no? A twisted protection or fear of the unknown and the change. Anyhow, wow, did I just make this all about me? Yes, yes I did. Sorry. I hope you can make a breakthrough in the mental side soon and enjoy your rockin' new bod! We are all pulling for you and hope to see a glorious celebratory post in the future. If not, you can gain it all back by eating little bad things all day long, right?
  12. My introduction. My name is Dana and I am 40 years old. I am on my second marriage (this one going much better than the first...lol). I had two daughters my first marriage and my current husband and I had a daughter together. He also had two children to his first wife. His two are older than my two and he had the only boy. his son is 17 his daughter 15 then my two are 14 and 13 and the youngest is 8. (yea, not a big fan of teenage girls right now). I began to have problems with my weight after I had my second child and began to have back problems as well. then several years ago I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and of course the side effect of my meds was weight gain. I am 5'5'' and my highest was 258. It was all I could do to get through the day and would go straight to bed as soon as I got home from work. I have worked for a Head Start program for 12 years as a Family Engagement Manager. I really missed spending time with my kids and family. I began the process last October then in February I started having problems with my gall bladder. when I finally had my surgery 4/22, the dr told me that my gallbladder was one of the worst he had ever seen and it should have been out a long time ago. I never had any of the norman symptoms but was sick all the time for at least the last 2-3 years. I knew as soon as i woke from surgery that it was gone. my entire body felt so much better all over (even with the pain, it felt better). I have had no problems since surgery, thank goodness, and I have felt so much better. 1.5weeks after surgery I went to the shore for my 13yr olds twirling championships and was able to walk the boardwalk the entire week (last year couldn't even do two blocks). I am now down to 216 and can finally start going to a gym (also had two hernias repaired that I didn't know I had). Hoping to start toning some of the wiggle & jiggle. I usually try to at least catch up every evening but with work and the kids having activities in the evening, its hard. I will say, when I am having a rough day it is great to check in and see how good most everyone else is doing. Hope all continues to go well for us! Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk

You can't change your body shape through weight loss or weight gain and pics don't lie. You appear to have great legs (jealous!) and carry more weight in your middle. I'm not seeing a big booty or a big chest and you look like you will slim down beautifully. I consider this kind of like getting my hair cut. It looks awkward at first, it grows out kind of funky until I get used to it, and then it will all fall into place.
  16. Lynda, you are TINY! And you don't look 5'6" either! Your goal weight is really low and by the chart I looked at 1 lb below ideal! You go, girl! Makes me wonder if I had "stuck" to losing instead of going to "maintenance" (and I say that tongue in cheeck!) at 150 what I could have gotten down to. ha! Quote: Typically, adults tend to gain weight in their mid-twenties, and this trend further continues with increase in age, due to reduction in the metabolic rate and physical activity. In contrast, the height remains constant during this period. In fact, according to the Gerontology Research Center (National Institutes of Health), some weight gain after 35 years of age is essential for good bone health. Well, I accomplished that! ha!

    Anyone else?

Thank god I'm not alone on this one! My husband and I had both agreed we didn't want our son to be an only child but since the surgery all I can think about is all the pregnancy weight I would gain if I got pregnant again.i feel bad for my husband because he really wants a second child. My husband just keeps saying to get off my birth control ( depo) and if we get pregnant we get pregnant. Part of me freaks out about that because I've only been post op for a few months and second the weight gain... Urg

    JULY 2nd !

Hi Megan, my date is July 2nd too! I got my date about three weeks ago. I'm going through many of the same emotions that you are. I'm actually having a revision from the lapband. I was very successful with the band and lost from 275 down to 155 pounds in 4 1/2 years, then started having issues with the band. I've gained 30 pounds over the past 7 months, but am happy that I'm able to get this revision done before I have more weight gain. My life has been so much better since losing so much weight. I guess I have gotten through alot of the emotional eating issues, learning to eat small bites and chew really good, and the fact that you just can't eat much. But I am scared about what the surgeon will find once he gets in there. I have had some tests done and we don't think I have any erosion, just mainly scar tissue. So, things should be fine. It is just scary. Good luck to you, and I hope we can stay connected.
  19. I guess I will start off by saying that I had rny surgery in January of this year and the last couple months my husband has been talking about wanting to have a baby. We already have a 2 year old son. Since starting this wls journey in November 2012 I have lost a total of 81 pounds. Just this week I finally hit 199 pounds ( first time being under 200 in years). Part of me doesn't want to have another pregnancy because I'm afraid of the weight gain and that I won't lose the baby weight and I've worked so hard to get where I am now and want to continue until I get to my goal weight and part of me feels guilty for not wanting another child because I don't wanna gain any weight. Anyone else feel this way or am I just being selfish. I'm so afraid to go back to the way I was before this journey started.
  20. How did you gain? I know it sounds silly, but I've been eating crap for two days and I guess you are what you eat because I feel like crap! Ive only gained 3 lbs. usually i can just look at bad food and gain weight. I usually eat very healthy, just too much, thus the weight gain. I know I'll gain it eventually, but this sucks! I've never purposely gaîned weight!

Let's Check In November 2012 Sleevers!

I was a 36DD before my kids and crazy weight gain...They got as big as a 40FF while breast feeding and were a 38F before surgery now I am back to a very saggy 36DD

  23. Every body and skin is different don't rely on these pics for what your gonna look like. Start exercise early on and don't stop!!! Cardio AND lifting weights. My chest ,stomach definitely need surgery from pregnancy and weight gain . My arms might be OK I'm working then at the gym!!! My lower body looks ok so far. My highest weight was 300 I have lost 94 so far and still have 46 more to loose. So I'm not sure how im gonna look by then . My plan is to be happy with the weight-loss and ride it out till I get enough money to get surgery to fix my body. I would trade being fat and depressed for the skin in a heart beat. stay positive

    Fruity advice?

Every one seems to be different and every nutrtitionist seems to have a different opinion on this. I choose to eat fruit; one because it is natural and non-processed. I eat fresh fruit only! Fruit has lots of fiber and Water. The thing is a lot of people add "stuff" to their fruit like sugar, salt, that will increase weight gain. I eat straight fruit/veggies raw with nothing added. Many times when I eat fruit I will mix it with a Protein for a snack- like apples and Peanut Butter, cucumber sticks and hummas, cheese and grapes. Thus far as long as I chew well I have had no problems with any type of fruit. Each person has to do what works for them.
  25. Post is getting a little old, but have to say this has been my experience. B-52 nailed it. All the tearing of muscle creates inflammation which, I believe, is mostly Water retention. My weight always jumps for a few days after starting a workout. I jumped 3 pounds almost overnight this last time. This initial weight gain though falls off within a week then I usually see a huge weight drop.
