    Bostonians, are you there?

@IAmGrace; I don't really get "full" either in the way that I used to; but after I eat a surprisingly small amount I start to get the hiccups or get a feeling in my chest that I am starting to recognize as "full". I am now eating between 600 and 700 a day; I was over 700 today. I find I have to be very rigid; I have breakfast, lunch, dinner and 1 or 2 "snacks" depending on where I am for protein that day. Otherwise I could eat (but certainly don't need to) 1/2 hour after I last ate. My nutritionist warned about "grazing". Certainly at 700 or 800 calories a day you will still lose weight, but once we can ingest more the grazing will lead to weight gain. I'm getting a bit more adventurous with food; I had a small amount of corned beef and cabbage, and today I had the ground beef part of some Shepard's Pie. But I do find 2 or 2.5 ounces are plenty. I am using very small plates, and I stop eating when the food is gone, and I realize I am not hungry! I hope your cold is just a cold; I hope mine is, too. I am a bit worried because I feel like my immune system is not very robust right now; I had the actual flu right before my surgery (in fact it delayed my surgery for one week), then back to back colds, and with such low calories I feel like I don't have much to fight off any virus. And I am 61, so in that respect I am "high risk", too. My work is doing 5 days out of every 10; so there are very few people in my office. I hope you are in a comfortable situation to ride this out! Wishing you health and happiness!

    Calories TOO low?

That’s really good to hear. Am very concerned about jumping out of metabolic frying pan and into a fire. Knowing that nutrition is still so very far from an exact science and same for the collective mechanisms that influence appetite and weight gain, this kind of feedback is fab to have :-) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. First off, congrats on being a new mom...second, sounds like you know what you need to do to stay at a healthy weight gain. It may sound like a lot of weight gain right now because you've been losing for so long but the reality is, your probably not going to balloon up to old weight anytime soon. Keep up a light walking workout and watch your food choices.
  4. Hey everyone! I’m new here, but have come to this site because I’m getting scared and am trying to find some help. I had a gastric bypass over 2 years ago going on 3 and had been doing really well with keeping my weight off. Then I became pregnant and had my beautiful baby boy this December, but I just cannot seem to lose my baby weight. Has anyone else had this issue? Is the pouch reset something to consider and does it really work? Any thoughts on how I can start gaining control back of my gastric bypass and lose this weight? Thanks! 🤗
  5. I had a sleeve gastrectomy on Monday and had to go through the approval process with Health Alliance. My hospital handled all of the paperwork and there were never any hitches or questions. Then again my hospital has a very good rep, so it may be as much a question of how thorough and diligent the personnel are at your hospital, as opposed to Health Alliance itself. When I first embarked on this journey late last year my doc told me up front that Health Alliance will want to see long-term weight loss during the pre-surgery program and no major weight gain at any point. They never gave me any specific numbers. I was originally scheduled for surgery in April, but of course that had to be canceled due to COVID. When elective surgeries opened back up in June, I did not have to get re-approved; everything was still in place. So no sage words of wisdom, just a singular data point.
  6. Hi there, I just joined this site looking for support and suggestions on my 1st major weight gain 16 years post a very successful gastric bypass surgery. I am 52, had the surgery at 36, and lost 198 lbs, and maintained a goal weight of 170 lbs, with a yearly fluctuation of 10 lbs, or so, post operatively. I also maintain yearly blood work that drives my nutrition and supplemental needs with my primary doctor. I gained about 20 lbs about 4 years ago after back surgery, but brought it down again within the year. Here is my problem, last January I started menopause, stopped oral contraceptive, and have experienced heavy insomnia, hot flashes, hormone shifts, and large weight gain of 50 lbs for the year. I have to add that this total change in my physical, and emotional health, has led to some depression, which of course does not help. I am still going through Menopause but I feel more emotionally stable and ready to address the weight gain. My question is, where do I start? My surgeon had always said "you have a permanent tool at your disposal, so if you feel yourself slipping from your program, then go back to the beginning" which I have always assumed he meant to start at only fluids and gradually increase intake from there, but I've never truly slipped with a significant weight gain in 15 years, so never had to go back. I would appreciate surgeon and fellow post operative patients advice and suggestions please.

    Whole Food Plant Based Eating

I am liking it so far. I am still using up some animal based protein powders, and a few items in the freezer (like frozen salmon), but i am liking it so far. The only problem is that it really increases the VOLUME of food eaten, which is a bit hard for me at this point. I don't want to "stretch" my pouch, so I just eat real slowly, chew very well, and take my time. I use soups and sauteed veggies with tofu at work, because I can eat them within the 20-30 minute lunch break, and I eat my big raw salad at home, because it takes more than an hour to eat. I spread out the grains and legumes so they aren't all packed into huge meals that I can't finish. I have had NO problem with weight gain by eating the extra carbs. I feel good, and have lots of energy. My goal is to go 80-90% plant based, and I am pretty much there now. Next week (1 week before my bike race) I will go 100% plant based, as there is pretty impressive evidence that athletic performance improves, even in a short time, with WFPB. Inflammation in the blood vessels and muscles is reduced, allowing for increased blood flow. Guys, even bedroom performance is enhanced with increased blood flow by eliminating all animal based foods for even just 24 hours before an "event." Food for thought.......
  8. Has anyone out there, 18 most or longer post-op, seen any weight gain. I was at 365, then 330 or so day of surgery, and got down to 226. Which my physician was about dead on with (my goal was 190, he laughed and said 225 was more realistic due to my bone density). I floated between 226 and 229 for about a year. Then as if like entering the next stage or something, I've begun gaining weight. 230, 235, 240, 245... So I begin a walking regiment. I do about 3-4 miles a time 5 times a week (3mph, 3.5 incline). I dropped to 241 within a couple weeks, but today I'm up to 244 again. I'll be honest, after 2.5 years post op, my biggest issue isn't that I feel hungry, it's that I never truly feel full compare to a year ago.
  9. I use Myfitnesspal to track and report my food journal to my doctor. When I went for my 7 week check-up yesterday I was told that I am having too many carbs, not enough Protein and I shouldn't indulge in sugar free treats such as pudding and popsicles. She said that the taste of sweet items will keep my sugar addiction going and could eventually cause weight gain. She even offered putting me on Contrave to stop the addiction feeling. It is strange though because all my Protein shakes are sweet so what is the difference? I am eating for better health. not pleasure. so I need to break that habit. I am having a hard time with protein because post-op the taste of Protein drinks gag me. I have 7 different powder flavors and brands and they were all good prior to surgery. I am going to try to do a protein mug brownie to see if that will help. I have tried the clear liquid Protein drinks and they are also gross. I go to a local nutrition store and do tastings to see what I can switch, but that hasn’t helped either. Things sometimes taste good at first but then goes back to gross after a few times. I have updated my goals to match as close as I can to her recommendations. She suggested 600-800 calories, and 100-120 grams of protein. She was happy I lost fat, gained muscle and my hydration was up, but she just wasn't satisfied with what I am eating. The item she did point out was a baked potato. I know it is full of carbs but my husband stopped at Wendy's and that was the only thing I could have on the menu and I didn't think that would blow my month. I could only eat half of it, and ate the other half the next day. I'm not throwing in the towel by no means but I am aggravated because I don't think I am doing what I should be doing but I'm not sure how to correct it without just drinking protein shakes or eating Protein Bars. I may be putting too much thought and stress on myself to make this work. Sorry I feel like I am just blabbering and making no sense. For anyone that says having weight loss surgery is the easy way out, they have no clue. It takes dedication, determination, control, and much more to become a new healthy you. This is today's log and I already ate dinner and I am already hungry. gaining weight

It’s part of the band insanity to get a little panicky when you stop losing or start gaining. First thing, take a step back and look at the situation. How much are you eating? Are you exercising? Do you feel any restriction? Are you grazing throughout the day? Band slippage alone wouldn’t account for weight gain unless you are feeling no restriction and eating more food. It’s virtually impossible to gain six pounds of fat in one week unless you are seriously overeating. If your food/exercise seems reasonable, it’s very likely that there’s something else going on in your body. It could be your period, stress, bloat, or any number of other temporary conditions that your body will sort out all on its own.

    Bad Timing And Regret

Didn't you just overeat like 5 days ago per your blog? Sweetheart, you are missing your coping mechanism. Believe me, I know the feeling so pls don't think I'm posting hate messages or anything ill willed, just maybe poorly said on my part. Remember you did this surgery to save your life - remember you said previously you were glad to have this surgery or you would have gained 30 more lb.s by now? I too understand that feeling. Ok the weight gain didn't happen overnight. It's not going to come off that way either. Relax, practice patience, know that God is trying to get you to learn to work on the head while the body takes it sweet time. Some basics that I try to remind myself whenever I get to this level of frustration: Are you exercising on a consistent basis? Are you drinking your water? Are you tracking your input (calories in) vs. calorie burn (calories out)? To that, I suggest myfitnesspal.com - it's wonderful! You have a lot of stress in your life right now so that's only adding to things. Relax, find a way to 'destress' and practice THESE basics - get your water in, get your exercise in on a consistent basis and track your i's and o's (inputs and outputs) and I BET you $100 you will see the scale move. Don't revert to 'fad diets' like going back to total liquids. You cannot live on those. But I too know how easy that appeals to me too whenever I'm stuck, grr. Practice the 'basics' and know tomorrow is going to be better! Good luck!
  12. Did anyone gain a few pounds initially right after surgery? When I went in the hospital on Monday I was 256 and today I weigh 261.

    Weight Regain - Need advice

As always I love kathy's @proud grammy perspective The work does not end after goal. Many of us have experienced the emotions that come along with a weight gain. Shame, guilt, depression and feeling we have failed. Self-esteem can take a big hit. This is one of the many mental battles with weight loss surgery. Recovering can be counseling or reading books on manage stress/emotional eating and self-esteem. Topics on whatever issue you are working on...Would love to see a book club because most of us have these issues in common.

    Post op 3yrs HELP MEEEE

Sorry I don't have any helpful advice on losing the weight, but I just wanted to say your bariatric team is there to help you. It is really common for pregnancy to cause weight gain, so you shouldn't be embarrassed about that! Especially since you've worked so hard to get back to your goal weight (but even if that wasn't the case, you have a new baby! cut yourself a break). I'm sure they've seen other people with similar issues, so I hope they are helpful.
  15. Hi all! I am 13 months post op and 8 weeks pregnant. I am really struggling dealing with the food cravings and being hungry all the time! I am still king mostly healthy choices but if I don’t eat like every two hours I feel sick. I have gained a few pounds already and was hoping for some diet help. I can’t eat cold meats or deli meats which made up most of my diet before. Does anyone have a diet plan they follow during pregnancy? I understand I will gain weight but I want it to be a healthy weight gain. Thanks!
  16. Like I said above: Weight gain, yea, it's real! I'm 3 yrs out (next week) - band to sleeve revision. I had done a pretty good job staying focused & losing weight. My start weight was around 245 pounds & my average weight was around 138 to 140 pds. My lowest was 135, but that didn't last long. I'm about 5'2. I know, a giant. So, my struggle started slowly but surely, a few months ago. So, most sleevers can't really eat a lot, which is good, because our tool is working. HOWEVER, it's up to you to eat the right foods. Well, I'm married to a BIG snacker! Hubby eat crap all the time. We're talking things like chips, crackers, chocolate, etc... I used to be able to ignore his snacking, but due to work related stress (hey, that's my excuse), I started to munch. Then, it happened. I was laid-off mid November. Yup, right before the holidays. Guess what happens when you're searching for a job, while sitting on your butt, day in / day out, for hours & hours..... You eat anything because you're frustrated / stressed / bored.... you name it. I know these are only "excuses" but I genuinely feel over-whelmed. We've been able to sustain ourselves, and should be able to hold on for another month or so, but after that.... shits going down. I only got 5 weeks severance as I was only there for 1 1/2 yrs. Thankfully, I had around 150 hours PTO that I never used. But, I did have to cash out some 401K funds to sustain us a little longer. The stress, yea, it's real!!! OK, what's the point of my post? IDK, I guess I'm looking for support. For anyone that's several years out, how do you keep your focus going, and avoid the stress eating? Yea, I know, being fat is NOT an option... but I am. I feel it. I'm almost 150 pounds. How did I let this happen? How on Earth do I get my mojo back? I was doing so well... Now what?
  17. Hey guys, I was sleeved on 5/16, and I lost 10 lbs in the first 10 days, and since I started purees I have stopped losing weight and actually have gained 3 lbs. I know they say you can stall at week 2 or 3, but this is so beyond frustrating. How in the world have I GAINED weight? I haven't eaten more than 800 calories in a day. I know I just need to keep at it, it is just so upsetting that I went through all of this and I'm not getting any results. (Not losing inches either, I checked). Carbonated Water?

No way honey!!! No way. It will stretch your pouch. Maybe not all at once but over time. Diet coke causes weight gain. Research it. There have been many studies to support it. It's terrible for you, very hard on your stomach and could give you an ulcer. It has a ton of chemicals in it which are awful for you and your new lifestyle. http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20739512,00.html Must read this. Start exploring new things. Perhaps iced decaf tea? Decaf coffee chilled with a little cream? Crystal light.

    Lapband or Bypass?

MintyMew, I'm one of those that have had some problems in the weight department, meaning I gained back what I lost prior to surgery, 25 lbs. It's been a very frustrating road for me trying to get things working right. I chose this surgery over RNY because I was afraid and have had issues eating around the band ever since because I had been too tight or not tight enough. I can't say I definitely would have been more successful with the RNY because I don't know for sure but my GP wanted me to have it and I kind of convinced all my docs that I could do the lap band even though I didn't know what I was in for. I thought the only difference was that I would lose weight at a slower pace and I was fine with that but what I didn't realize is that the foods that were considered "junk foods" went right through the band and the healthy ones were the ones you had to work on to chew and could only eat so much of like proteins and veg and fruit. So if I was frustrated from only being able to eat a tbs of protein I knew I could eat a cookie I would. It's not like the band kept me from changing any bad behaviors I had before I was banded. They tell you to avoid those foods but really only tell you that the high caloric drinks are the ones that will make you gain weight. My 19 year old daughter is having the RNY this coming Tuesday and I'm really proud of her because she's done so well so far and has lost about 35+ in the past 6 weeks on her liquid diet. I am nervous because because she is my baby and because I wish she didn't have to go through all of this in the first place but for her own happiness and sanity it's a choice she has made and I'm supporting her decision. At my age and with yo yo dieting for years and a bad sweet tooth anyway it probably wasn't the right choice for me. I may never get down to a healthy weight again, it's just something I may have to accept because of my struggles. There maybe some other contributing factors to this failure of mine but for now it's neither here nor there and I have to deal with what I've chosen and how I behave. Anyway take everything into consideration before you make such a life changing decision. I'm not very popular because I have somewhat regretted my banding and this is a place where people want to support each others success with the band and that's understandable. No one wants to hear something bad about something they really are passionate about and has changed their lives for the better! There could be problems with weight gains with any of the surgeries so don't think only one type has those issues, read as much as you can. There's a good book out there that I bought for my daughter called "Weight Loss For Dummies" and she read it and enjoyed it and learned a lot from it. It doesn't cover much on the lap band though so take that into consideration. Anyway good luck with your decision I know it's not an easy one but if someone could stopped me and told me I'd totally screw this up prior to surgery I may have thought twice. Take care brandyII:smile:
  20. I have had this problem, it can be from water weight gain, regular weight gain or irritation of the band area due to reflux - or at least this is what I was told by my physician.
  21. I just ran across this article that references some recent studies. http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/study-diet-soda-increases-risk-diabetes-why-still-192600358.html Yet another study confirms what people have been saying for ages: Stop drinking diet soda. Like, right now. Drinking just one 12-ounce can of an artificially sweetened fizzy drink per week can increase your risk of Type 2 diabetes by 33 percent, French researchers found. And given that most people don't stop at a single weekly serving, your real risk for diabetes could actually be much higher. Diet Soda May Increase Risk of Depression The study, which was announced Thursday and will be published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, was conducted by France's National Institute of Health and Medical Research and covered 66,118 middle-aged women whose dietary habits and health were tracked from 1993 to 2007. Diet Soda May Be Making You Fat The results were unexpected. Though it's well-known that people who consume a lot of sugar are more likely to develop diabetes, the researchers found that participants who drank "light" or "diet" soft drinks had a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than those who drank regular, sugar-filled sodas. Those who drank 100 percent natural squeezed fruit juices instead had no additional risk. Read more about the study.
  22. I was on Prilosec for 6 months post-op; no weight gain. I am also on Prilosec again because I need to take an NSAID for something so they gave it to me to help prevent issues - no weight gain.

    How ofter do you weigh

Losing weight and losing fat are two completely different things. It's nice to see the scale go down of course but usually quick weight gain or loss is simply the body ridding or absorbing fluids. It's nearly impossible to lose more than 1/2 lb of fat in one day unless you're a marathon runner or ride a century bike ride. Some types of food or sodium can cause the body to eliminate fluids or absorb fluids. Carbs and sodium can cause these wild weight fluctuations. If you're hyper-sensitive to seeing the scale jump around on a daily or weekly basis maybe you shouldn't look. But if you understand the reasons for these fluctuations and don't take them personally, weigh yourself daily like many of us do. I weigh morning and night. Just remember that you need to consume 3500 more calories than you burn to gain one lb/fat. Or, you need to burn 3500 calories more than you consume to lose one lb/fat. If you eat 1000 calories a day and burn 2000, you could be losing approximately 1/3 lb/fat a day. But, if it's your TOM or you consume a snickers bar or a bowl of cheerios or 2000mg of sodium, your body could retain 1-3 lbs of extra fluids. It's not fat weight but your scale can't tell the diff. Hope this wasn't too lengthy and helps?
