  1. HW 271.5 SW 246.9 CW 205.8 Goal 150. Surgeon's goal (70% of excess weight) 179. So I'm 26 pounds from my surgeon's goal. Surgery was August 23. That 179 puts me about where I was when my hubby and I got married 19 years ago. My main goal right now is to be in onederland by New Year's. I've lost 65.7 pounds. I am sometimes disappointed with myself, but I need to cut myself some slack and just stay with the program.

    Firecrackers...how we doing?

Hey Tracy! I think a lot of people have stalls, and then there are a few of us that just keep on trucking. I am super glad I am in the latter group, except, I'm having skin issues already, and I still have 80 pounds to goal. I started out at 310, and hit 250 on Saturday! I'm thrilled with my weight loss, but not so much about the loose skin. Keep your chin up, you're doing great!!!

    New To The Forum

I'm new here too..... just had my first visit to the surgeon. My insurance doesn't require the 6 month precertification, but I am certain it will be a journey! My surgeon is out of Wellseley Newton hospital in the Boston area and he has a good strong background in sleeve surgery. I met with a nutritionist and psychiatrist as well as the surgeon. They asked me to lose 5 pounds (that seemed like a small amount of weight to lose) in the next month, keep a food journal, cut out soda completely, exercise 20-30 minutes a day and attend at least 2 more group meetings. I have another appointment on June 1st and I was told that if I do well, they will set a date. Very excited!!
  4. Welcome, Josh, to both you and your anonymous wife. Congratulations on your decision to get things in control. I'm retired Navy, and didn't really start gaining weight till I left the military, so I can relate to your situation. There is a wealth of information here from people at all levels on this journey. Don't hesitate to ask questions. The more educated you are about the process, the better time of it you'll be able to make. It takes effort and planning to be successful, but there are many who have gone before you. Have a seat, and keep reading. Good luck! Dave
  5. He hubby is two weeks and two days from surgery. He has lost 40.9 lbs since may 31. That is including the pre op weight loss. He is feeling amazing. Mowed the lawn yesterday. Has no more back pain! I am so damn proud of him!!
  6. Hi I am 1 and 1/2 years out from surgery and mostly get compliments and good stuff my way. Last week a good friend said, "geesh, you look so thin!" He doesn't want me to lose more weight -- that actually made me feel good, and I took it as motivation actually. Even if people say I don't need to lose weight, I told them I need to get to goal, which was a healthy BMI and that usually ended the conversation. On the other hand, almost all of us know of people who had WLS and regained weight. Take it as a challenge for yourself NOT to do that. It scares me to no end to gain back weight. That can be a GOOD thing actually. I say to myself, "ok you've been given this new body, NOW what are you going to do with it? We've been given a gift, and I look at it that way and not many people are given a second chance at a body. So take it as a scary challenge for something you vow not to do. It's not always a bad thing to hear of those who regain weight. Apparently it is a possibility (not sure of stats with the sleeve though). Ok, so let's do all we can to put practices into place for us to succeed and not fail! I admit there are days I eat badly and I yell at myself. I made a deal with a coworker that I would let her know everytime I was one ounce above goal weight, and so far I have had to confess one time only. This is a good thing knowing I need to fess up. Good luck with your continued weight loss and getting to that healthy BMI!

Why can't they just say congratulations???

Sorry you didn't get the support or reaction you had hoped, Mini. You can see you weight loss is amazing and I'd say most people were just jealous or perhaps uncomfortable. We are here for you and I think you are doing amazing!
  8. You have done a great thing for yourself. If your mom is like mine, maybe she did something like tell everyone to not mention it. People just do the weirdest things sometimes. But you have done a great thing for yourself, and I guess people don't know how to react. It is like they are waiting for the regain....I get a lot of those lap band stories b/c people do not know the difference between surgeries. At least we grow up and get to have husbands that appreciate it, heh? I had a funeral to go to yesterday and it was awkward b/c there were a lot of people that haven't seen me in years and they didn't know what to say. They knew I had surgery I'd imagine. But I just said that I'd been fat for 20 years and figured it was time for a change. Or I said I decided to lose my pregnancy weight gain after 12 years - kind of made a joke. The worst part was b/c my clothes are all falling off I had nothing cute in black so had to wear a bright pink suit so I really stuck out at the funeral. Simply b/c I had nothing to wear like a skirt or dress. It was sorta funny b/c I hadn't thought no one else would wear a summer color, and they didn't. I was like a light bulb. I laughed it off. They probably thought I planned that, but I just didn't have any dressy clothes in my size. haha
  9. it's hard to understand, but don't take it personally....it's just the way people are....you keep on with your weight loss, that's what is most important for the moment. keep up the good work and if people don't congratulate, you be happy and proud!!! cause you definitely deserve it. CONGRATS CONGRATS!!!!:001_tt2:

    just dont know.

Hey everyone- im 10 days post op and lost quickly in the first week. Seems to be slow now and Im kinda getting discouraged. Im happy with the weight I did lose but Im starving all the time and I yet to find my filler. Today I made chicken riggies for my family and i mashed up some chicken and im eating that now. I havent felt nausea or sick yet so is it too early to start eating. I have been on liquids and had mashed pot yesterday- does anyone know why I shouldnt be eating this or is it going to harm me. I need help starting to have doubts and my struggle is just yet to begin. Please help...thanks guys
  11. I went to a play tonight with my sister and found myself sitting between her and another gal who was also a large lady. If I hadn't lost all the weight, I would have never fit between them...and all three of us would have been very uncomfortable. Even with my sister and this other lady spilling over into 'my space', I was fine. How many times can I say thank you for this band? How about every single time I fit somewhere that I used to not be able to.

    Bruises - 3 months out

I can say I bruise easier than I used to after losing the weight. Less cushion, I guess. My labs are fine, so it's not that. You should probably talk to your doc and maybe get some labs as bruising can be caused by Vitamin deficiencies. Think they did 3 month and 6 month labs on me anyway. Maybe a part of your follow up appointments?
  13. So many of us got this surgery because we were parents who wanted to do right by our kids. As you lose the weight, is it changing things for your kids? What do they think about it? At our house: -no more junk food anywhere in the house -my son has to eat Protein first (he would have lived on just bread if you let him) -we went to the state fair where I was able to walk all over and was less tired than him -my kids are our biggest supporters and they're seeing us succeed. That makes me happy. Cute NSV. I've been slopping around in 2xl pjs. Loose, unsexy, old. My husband gently reminded me that I could now buy sexy lingerie if I wanted? (If I wanted, not he. Sneaky!) I bought some L sizes pjs. I feel they cling to me too much. I asked my 13-year old if they were too tight. Here's his answer: "Wow! (Waves hands in hourglass shape) They look just fine to me!" Hahahahaha!

What are you working on Pre-op?

First thing I did was ween myself off coffee. I knew I had to give up caffeine and from past experience, I didn't want to go through it on top of recovering from the surgery and all the other adjustments. Sounds silly, but I suffer from at least two weeks of a bad head ache when I quit coffee. Next, I started researching for a good nutrition supplement plan for post surgery. I have a lot of food allergies with artificial sweeteners being a big one. I wanted to find high quality vitamins in powder or liquid form that didn't have additives that I could mix into protein smoothies I will make myself. I finally found a great multi, a calcium complex and plain whey all in powder form. They have no added sweeteners or flavors. I have made smoothies with them and they are delicious. Now, my pre op diet doesn't begin until Dec. 10th, so I have been making the most of my last few weeks of diet freedom and been enjoying whatever I want (except coffee)....my last hurrah, guilt free! Crazy, huh? Yes, I have gained a couple more pounds...Dec. 17th will be the real beginning of my new life!
  15. These are all great tips and will hopefully motivate me! I'm pre-op as well- I've got my 3rd of 6 monthly check-ins next week and am just starting to tackle the other pre-op appointments. I'm very out of shape now but just last year I was in fantastic shape from frequent barre classes. I'm at that place where I haven't worked out in so long and have gained so much I'm scared to go back but I do really want to be more physically fit by the time I go for surgery (likely March or April.) This is my first post!

Any help getting over a plateau?

I had my surgery 6 months ago and I have lost 86 pounds so far. I am excited about this but I have also been at the 86 pound weight loss for about a month. I know that doesn't seem like a long time but when you get used to seeing it come off at about 3-5 pounds a week and then nothing for a month...well, its discouraging. I have found that when I go back on liquids for a few days it starts to come off again but I am tired of the same old Unjury protein powder:confused_smile:. Anyone out there have any suggestions? I tried the Muscle Milk and I think it made me gain weight:sad:.
  18. I was banded last Friday and am surprised by the amount of pain I am in - I decided to weigh myself today and found that I had gained 1 1/2 pounds even though I am eating at the most 3 Protein shakes a day and Water. I decided today to stop using the pain medication prescribed by my Dr. I(in case it was increasing my constipation) even though I still feel very sore, especially when I lie down or get up from a lie-down position. I haven't been able to have a bowel movement and am wondering if that is increasing the soreness I am feeling. I started to take Colase (stool softener) and today I took Correctol but still no luck. I'm sort of ranting today - feeling uncertain about what to expect and whether this is normal. All I know is that I hurt, am constipated, have no hunger, but am gaining weight. Oh yeah! The other thing is that I am on an Insulin Pump and I haven't needed to add any insulin since this started which means the pump is giving me about 70 units a day spread out over 24 hours. Prior to getting the banding, I was using about 300 units a day and still had uncontrollable blood sugar levels.

    Right Amount Of Protein

It depends on what your surgeon has advised you to do...I was advised to measure protein portions by volume, after cooking; 3 oz lean protein per meal... It makes the most sense to me, as your pouch can hold only so much volume...so a weight measurement is fairly useless in this case. Yet another example of the differences surgeons have in advising their patients...

    My Menu Blog

Menu Blog I do push the limits of the food budget 1300-1500 calories per day vs. the typical 800-1200 quoted by most doctors. I do this for 4 reasons: 1) I think that they (the doctors) under estimate the amount of protein people need. The higher I keep my protein the better weight comes off. 2) I lift weights and feel I need the extra protein 3) I want to keep my metabolism in as high a gear as I can 4) based on my target weight 190 lbs. I won’t have to make many changes when I get there. Key for my Menu First, one of my key tools is Vitol Egg protein powder. Second is packing all my meal in 8oz plastic containers so I don’t have to guess. Third, we make most of the items below in a big batch on Sunday and uses them during the week. Fourth, sometimes you have to eat out, when I do I stick to fish or soups/stews they are easier to digest. Fifth, I avoid directly adding carbs because they make my hungry between meals. Breakfast (5 am) Option 1: 1 whole egg and 3 egg whites, 1oz low fat cheese and sliced peppers and mushrooms Option 2: 1 Cup Oatmeal with Vitol Egg powder 2 Tablespoons (adds 24Grams of Protein) Option 3: 1Cup fat free yogurt with Vitol Egg powder 2 Tablespoons (adds 24Grams of Protein) Mid-Morning (9 am) Option 1: 1Cup fat free yogurt with Vitol Egg powder 2 Tablespoons (adds 24Grams of Protein) Option 2: 8oz Diced Chicken Salad Option 3: 2 String cheese and 1oz. Almonds Option 4: MuscleMilk Protein Shake Lunch (Noon) Option 1: 1 cup Turkey Chili with 1 oz of Cheese Option 2: 1 cup fat free fried beans with diced, onions, peppers and salsa Option 3: 8oz Diced Chicken or Tuna Salad Pre Work Out Meal Late Afternoon (4 pm) Supplements – Nitric Oxide Drink with Creatine, Gummy Vitamins, Gummy Omegas Option 1: ½ Cup fat free yogurt with Vitol Egg powder 2 Tablespoons (adds 24Grams of Protein) Option 2: 4oz Diced Chicken Salad Option 3: 1 String cheese and 1oz. Almonds Option 4: MuscleMilk Protein Shake Post Work Out Dinner Option 1: 6 oz Ahi Tuna Steak in olive oil and lemon pepper Option 2: 1 cup chipotle chicken crock pot stew with carrots, onion, mushrooms, peppers Option 3: 8oz Chicken Brest Happy Eating

From the album: Here we go

This is me from our most recent cruise w my family in 2012 May. Weight about 250.
  23. I was sleeved 4/23, highest weight 237 lbs, weight day of surgery 227 lbs. 1 month check in I weight 208 lbs. Happy with my progress thus far. I've been using 100% pure Argan oil and A&D first aid ointment with vitamins 2x a day - my incisions are healing nicely - my surgeon even made a comment about how good they look! I started weight training and Pilates to attempt to tone any developing excess skin, so far I've been lucky but it's still very early in. Still struggling to get all of my protein in, I'm just not hungry! Happy to answer any questions - Hope everyone is progressing well - Nikki

    Thinking about getting the surgery!

winnk I would do it again. I am almost 4 mos post op and i have lost 43 lbs. I still eat pretty much what i want. I do try to make healthier meal choices but if i want a cookie for dessert or a snack i will allow myself to have one. Notice i said one and not 5 (that would have been the old me) And i don't do it regularly. i'm sure my weight loss would be faster if i cut out all the carbs but i don't want to feel like i'm on a "diet" because we all know diets don't really work long term. I do try to work out at least 3x a week for at least 1 hour.

I have this scale: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/SALTER-9007BK3REF-BLK-GLSS-SCALE/dp/B0018BOMGS/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1223162059&sr=8-23]Amazon.com: SALTER 9007BK3REF BLK MRR GLSS SCALE: Electronics[/ame] It's reasonably priced and the weight is accurate up to 400lbs. I compare it with the doctor's office and it's always been spot on.
