    New Jersey August Chat

Boy----lot's of prayers tonight for my Jersey Girls!!! Michaele---will be praying hard for good news for you, I know you are scared, and you can come here and unload anytime. I know when you get news like that, all sorts of emotions rear their heads! When I got my bad news, I was scared, and yet mad as hell, at EVERYONE!!! And no one had given me cancer, but I was still mad, I wanted to scream and cry, and I also wanted to hide and pretend I had never been told, so I would not have to deal with it. Last Fall I had a scare with my thyroid, I thought it too was cancerous, and I used these wonderful women to moan and cry to, and complain about my fears-----they did not let me down! They won't you either! Hang in there, many, MANY times those tests are just shadows and nothing is wrong, and that is what we are hoping for for you!!! Sherry----follow those rules girlie! Did they not mention any sort of surgery to reset the band so to say, it just has to come out? That sounds so bizarre!!! Have you thought about any sort of revision surgery? I have heard that the sleeve is having issues with reflux as well, because I thought that would be ideal if anything ever happened, but now I am guessing not!! Betty, hope you are hanging (nope no more hanging for you!!!) make that---hope you are feeling good!!! Hugs to all of you. I am exhausted, I hauled wood with my Dad today, and cleaned my house----all on about 4 hours sleep, so I am off to bed. ((((((HUGS))))))) Kat

    Surgery didn’t work?

I’m honestly not upset. I could care less about what you think or say. You aren’t far out from your surgery, you could regain too. So 🤷🏻‍♀️. Lol and just so you know, I checked out your profile, looks like you had a meltdown at 6 weeks post op because losing a pound was “bad” in your book. I’m not “crying uncontrollably” heres your post post if You forgot “ I am sobbing uncontrollably right now and really need to hear from others who have had the band to RNY (or sleeve) revision, please. I am six days post op from band to RNY and I have lost ONE POUND. I am so upset. My biggest fear going into this was failing again just like I failed with the band. And, to me, a one pound loss is 100% failing. I'm in absolute hysterics right now crying. Why did I do this? So much money, so much time from work, so much pain... to lose a pound in a week? I could've lost far more than this with some simple Slim Fast diet or something. I can't do this. I cannot do this. I can't. What kind of fat, disgusting, out of control pig am I that even two WLS's aren't helping me lose weight?? I know my hormones are raging after surgery. I know I am behaving like an emotional basket case. I know this. But in this moment, this is so real. I am so upset... so ashamed of myself. If anyone reads this, would you mind telling me if you felt this way? Would you mind sharing your weight loss progress? How slow or fast it was? I know we are all different, but I would just like to see examples. And, most of all, would you mind sharing how you dealt with the incredibly slow loss? I am not a patient person. Not even close. I know myself. I will become discouraged and give up. I need help here. I do have an upcoming appointment with a therapist who I hope can help. But in this moment, I really, really just need to hear from those who have been here. “ thought u were the WISE dr. Seems like u might need to work on yourself
  3. Hi! I have had the band for the last 6 years. I lost almost 100 but developed an esophageal pouch. Once my band was loose over the course of 2 years I put all my weight back on. I've tried everything to control my eating and lose weight. I've also tried pills etc. Also found out I have a non functioning thyroid. I am having my band removed and sleeve performed June 4th. Looking forward to having band removed! I have heard from my surgeon and other patients that you don't lose near as quickly with a revision. I'm willing to try though.

    I am going crazy

It's understandable that you may be feeling frustrated and disappointed about your weight loss stall after your recent revision surgery. It's important to remember that weight loss can vary from person to person, and the rate of weight loss can also depend on factors such as the type of surgery, the individual's starting weight, and their adherence to post-surgery dietary and exercise guidelines. It's also important to keep in mind that weight loss is not always linear and it can be normal to experience plateaus or stalls along the way. Additionally, it is important to focus on the progress you have made so far, such as losing 26lbs, and not just the stall in your weight loss. It may be helpful to consult with your surgeon or a dietitian to review your dietary intake and ensure that you are getting enough protein, staying hydrated, and not consuming too many calories. They may also be able to provide you with strategies to help break through the stall, such as increasing your physical activity level or adjusting your dietary intake. Keep in mind that weight loss journey is not a linear one, and it may take time to see progress again. But it is important to stay consistent with your healthy habits, and not to get discouraged. Remember the reason why you decided to undergo the surgery and focus on the long-term benefits for your health.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

I've read on the forum many revise to a bypass if they have hiatal hernia and acid reflux. This wouldn't be an option for me, I had colon cancer and need to have yearly colonoscopy. Makes me feel its higher stakes with the sleeve as I won't be able to revise.
  6. Hello! I am 12 weeks out from revision to bypass! I am at the regret stage, I have been sick since I had the bypass. I go in tomorrow for and EDG to see if i have an Ulcer. I started out 222, now i am at 178.7. Please lift me up in prayer,🙏 that my body heals.

    October Surgery Date

Thought I would check in now that I am functioning. I had my surgery last Wednesday. Was in the hospital for six days. Because of other medical problems they used NO paralytics. I had a revision from a Nissan. I feel like I am doing GREAT. Not really needing pain medicine now. Hate cruising my pills and taking them it is so gross. Have my fist follow up appt tomorrow. I gained twenty pounds upon release. That IS a lot of fluid to retain. It is taking its sweet time leaving the system. If I rested more maybe that would help it leave. For the first six days I thought I had made the biggest mistake. Over that hump and feel I made the right choice. Thanks for letting me ramble.
  8. I was banded several years ago and my doctor said he can't do anything else for me. I have severe esophageal spasms and it is causing stomach acid to stay in my throat, causing me to choke at night, etc. He said what I should consider is revision to gastric bypass, but I have to see a specialist first to make sure I don't have some disorder where my esophagus does not open and close correctly. The biggest hurdle is my BMI is 37 and I have no co-morbidities - he said having pcos will not be enough - and he says insurance is going to give me trouble about that. I will likely have to appeal. And revision surgery scares me a bit. I am not going to purposely gain weight - my psychiatrist will never write a letter if I do that. I am so bummed out. He had been doing fluoro fills and it looked like the band was way to tight so he was shocked when he did a transnasal endoscopy how lose the band actually is. I have put so much work into this. This just sucks.
  9. Got another technical question. How can you change your tagline...the phrase that appears below your user name on your profile? I joined this forum as "Natasha" back in 2008 with the tagline "Post Op Lapband Newbie" I just changed my Display name to Nologoz...but am unable to change the tagline. I want to change it because I no longer have a lap band. It has been revised to RnY. Is there a way to change or delete the old tagline? ................................................................................................................................................................. EDIT: OK.......never mind. Somehow the tagline just defaulted to "Senior Member". I dunno how or why....just glad it's fixed...ask and you shall receive. Many thanks to the gods of the internet.

    October Sleevers! Announce Yourselves

Hey everybody! I'm scheduled for a revision on October 3 with Dr. Chris Sanborn. I initially lost 75 pounds with the band, and started having problems and gained it all back plus some. I'm in my pre-op diet now, and yes I'm starving. lol I think it's interesting that every doctor is different with what they require on their pre-op diets. I'm very excited for my revision that I can hardly contain myself. lol

    Long Term effective sleevers

I was sleeved in 2012, and am currently working on getting revision to gastric bypass [emoji17] I was initially very successful and hit goal after 2 years. However... I had a baby in July 2015 and not only gained back my weight but went into such a deep depression I gained almost 100+pounds. Not typical of most sleevers but just sharing my personal story. I had my tubes tied and this time around I will be doing things BY THE BOOK! Good luck to you!

How bad is Gerd after Sleeve?

We're very similar, except I never had issues before the surgery. I could eat virtually anything and my stomach was fine. I am 4 months post-op. Now the acid churns whenever I eat anything. Some days my voice is hoarse by 10am. I used to love spicy foods. Now they burn all the way down because my esophagus is irritated. I am now on prescription Prilosec 2x/day plus Tums as needed. My surgeon is already considering a revision to bypass, but the insurance company wants to try to control the acid with medication for 6 months first. One thing to be aware of - when PPIs first came out, they were considered safe for long-term use. Now the recommendation is for 6 months or less. So, those of you who are on PPIs might want to research this.

How bad is Gerd after Sleeve?

Well let me chime in here- I am 4 years post op!!!! I had pretty significant GERD way BEFORE my surgery, and in fact it was a huge mitigating factor in my surgery. my surgeon told me that the reduction we both expected in weight would easily eliminate my GERD, so either surgery was an option. I chose VSG in 2014. I lost about 70 lbs total and felt great. I took the occasional PPI for the first 4-6 months during that huge weight loss. Then...well about 2 years post op I regained a lot of my weight and GERD returned. I went back on a PPI. last fall I made an appointment with my surgeon who said that I REALLY had to lose all of the regain, and that if the GERD didn't resolve, I would probably face a revision. Around the same time I had an EGD and got some ugly news from my GI doc. That sparked a huge drive in me, I went full on Keto and have re-lost all of my regain!!! BUT...my GERD is still present and not getting any better. I know that I DO have a sliding hiatal hernia that may be reacting to the fat in Keto, so I just keep pushing and hope that by the time I see my GI doc in fall, it will be gone.. So yes, reflux after surgery can be and IS a real issue. for me, I honestly wish I would have just had the bypass 4 years ago, because I STILL face that option, even 4 years out!! EDITED TO ADD: I was formally diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus in 2012 but thankfully, no other positive screens since that year.

You know who the surgeon is that refers to it as stomach mutiliation, don't you? He's one that just happens to only do easy banding... nothing difficult for him! No sleeves, no bypass, only band revisions, and only those under a 50BMI. No wonder his stats are decent, he only does easy no risk surgery.

If my band erodes and I have to have it removed, I doubt very much that I'll be seeking support here afterwards, because it would be too depressing for me to come here and read about it. And if I had a revision, I'd be seeking support for that. As far as any friendships I've made here, there are other ways to communicate with them if I so choose.

Anyone wanna see a surgery war? This one will likely end up being just that. We'll see, but in the meantime a future DSer justifies the smell: Scheduled for Lap-Band over RNY Revision! Now I have Q's! People... I guess it really does take all kinds.

Ok, I will "come out of the closet". My first year with the band was a breeze. I lost about 80 pounds. Since then, I have had nothing but problems. I am either overfilled to the point of not being able to swallow my own spit, or not filled enough. There is no "sweet spot" for me anymore. I still have another 80 pounds to lose, and fear I will never get there with my band. I avoid fills now because of all the problems I have had with overfills. I have slipped my band three times. You almost never see me post in any threads anymore that are outside of the lounge because it is hard for me to encourage newbies and say wonderful things about the band when the actual truth is, I just want mine out. I hate it. If I could get the damn thing to work without making my life miserable like it did the first year, that would be great. But, I am sick of choking on my food, my spit, not being able to dine out with coworkers, pretending not to be hungry at lunch meetings to avoid the inevitable PB, etc. If my insurance would cover it, I would revise to the sleeve in a heartbeat. I have watched and read with interest every post that WasA and Mac make about it. Unfortunately, I was private pay on my band and used up all my resources to get it. I am constantly checking my insurance to see if they will cover the sleeve and if they ever do, I will revise immediately.

My taste is as good as ever, too. That means your disapproval of me continues to be very reassuring. Just know that a a GOOD percentage of the posters here--your buddies--will be revising to another surgery. It's good of you to let them know how you will feel about them when that time comes. Sue
  19. 1) depends on your policy....I had a total exclusion on any WLS so I had to pay out of pocket for my revision 2) I would have done it again in a heart beat! I'm 7 months post-revision and my life has been great! with the lapband I only lost 40 pounds, then gained it back and then some...with the sleeve I have restriction, I'm doing the right things and it is paying off....love it!

  22. Hello Angel2018 how is it going since the MGB? I am due to have my sleeve revised to MGB in 2 days and I'm excited!
  23. Hi all. I am 4 weeks post op from a band to sleeve revision. I have heard of people using stomach binders after surgery to protect their incisions but I am wondering if anyone has used them after healing? I am not so much losing pounds but inches for sure and my stomach is becoming saggy and the skin is loose. Any insight?

    August 2013 Roll Call

Day 8 post-op update, band to sleeve revision on 8/19. Feeling better every day. The first 5 days were so hard. I knew they would be hard, but it was so much worse than I anticipated. Not at all like my band surgery, more like my bad c-section 13 years ago. One thing I had not expected was the anxiety, I was terrified the whole first week that I was going to have a bad complication and have to go back into the hospital for months. Surgery was Monday, Friday afternoon I turned a corner and started feeling better. Now every day is noticeably better, drinking more, walking further and easier, moving better, less pain and less anxiety. I finally have some hope for the future! Keeping all my fellow August sleeve buddies in my thoughts and prayers for successfull surgeries and recoveries!
