  1. wow oh wow oh wow I'm so glad I found this site...I have been putting off going to a 'weight loss seminar' knowing that I 'want' to do the banding but continiously missing the dates of the seminars and continuing to eat more and more food since the holidays and wondering...'what's wrong with me...what is WRONG with me??' As I read on I am recognizing the fear of letting go of the food and how I have dealt with stress, emotions, happy, glad, or sad for most of my life is the biggest roadblock I'll have to overcome. So tonight with that realization I will walk into that seminar (with the help of a friend) and begin the next journey of my life...it all starts with one step huh? Betty

    Eating puree

If it's on your plan and working for you, then it's ok. We don't lose weight because of broth (and broth isn't on the plan for weight loss purposes). We lose weight because of 2 reasons. A surgically-induced lower set-point, and reduced calories. The clear liquid phase is in place to make sure the patient is consuming enough liquids to stay hydrated. Many people would get so full on heavier foods, that they wouldn't get their fluid in (the swelling during the first 2-3 weeks is pretty significant). Plus, liquids create the least strain on the staple line, and that is important until that wound can heal over (between 6 and 9 weeks). Every patient is different. Some can tolerate purees right away, some would have trouble. Luck of the draw, I think The main thing is we are all super careful for the first 2 months, because overdoing it could become a life and death situation.

  5. I am also new to this forum. I am having the same problem as you, but the differences is that my hair is constantly falling out. I had my lap band done in 2008, this last year I am unable to hold anything down. As far as protien shakes??? NOWAY. Im not losing anymore weight, Im stuck at 242 when I was down to 212, so I know what your going thru. I went to the back surgeons, he increased my multi Vitamins and everything else that goes along with it. Im still having lots of problems, I CANNOT HOLD ANYTHING DOWN.
  6. Hi All, I have not posted here in forever. I was banded in February 2007. I have made the decision to have my Lap Band removed. I cannot handle it anymore. I am tired of the horrific side effects of vomitting and pain. I think I have vomitted everyday for the last three years. I am tired of the fill and unfill game. I also have progressive Multiple Sclerosis, and I have been struggling with the disease. I have recently been hospitalized for it. I cannot fight a battle on two fronts. The side effects of the band, and the progression of my MS, and the battle that is MS. The Lap Band. I looked gaunt and awful when I had lost 50 kilos. My hair fell out, I looked like a deflated balloon. I hated how my body looked. I have gained the weight back, and it has all filled out again, and I feel happy with how it looks. I feel very beautiful and feminine. I think the medical profession glosses over the psychological effects all the changes the Lap Band can have on your life. Disclaimer this is my experience of life with the band. I am speaking only for myself, and giving my own opinions. There is no easy answer. I now personally do not believe the Lap Band is the answer either. I also believe it to be possibly dangerous in the long term. My Aunt had hers removed in emergency surgery a month ago. I also think the band works well in the short term, say the first two years, but it becomes less effective after that. I have decided to love myself as I am, be healthy in the body that I have, and to live my life for now, and not for the magical day that I look a certain way that society perceives that I must as a woman. I am a beautiful woman, right now and as I am. I am not buying the propeganda anymore. With that said I do wish everybody else well who has the band, or is to be banded. I am seeing my surgeon this Thursday, and I will ask him to take it out. My body, my choice. I am at peace with myself and who I am. Best Wishes Susannah

    Considering Mexico...

I would not hesitate to go to Mexico for surgery. I am also a self-pay patient. I decided to stay in Illinois and pay the much higher price simply because of the availability of family members. But I have frequently used health services abroad to save money and have been very pleased. I have read frequent positive reviews of surgeons in Mexico. I would suggest taking someone with you for the surgery - for support during recovery. I wish you great success in your weight-loss journey (I am on the same journey and will have my surgery in the US in October or November).

    Goodness Gracious

This lapband is gonna drive me to drink. I had my fifth fill on April 30th and I thought I might finally be in the elusive green zone. I wasn't able to eat a lot and lost several pounds. I loved it. Here we are, June 4, and little by little I find I can eat more and more and the weight loss has slowed to nothing. I'm going back on June 25 for my next appt. But, because I lost several pounds just after the last fill, I know my Dr will hesitate to add anything. Even though I tell him I lost it all in the two weeks following the last fill and none since. I do find I have some days where I can eat normally and other days where I can't eat much and feel like I'm going to PB or vomit. It's all just so wishy washy. I almost wish now that I'd gone with the sleeve. I guess I'm not really asking particular questions here, I'm just frustrated. I wonder if this thing will ever get adjusted perfectly and I'll be in the green zone with steady weight loss occurring (slow loss is fine as long as it it steady). It is frustrating having a very conservative Dr because I'm a Kaiser Permanente patient and each time I see the WLS Dr, I need to get a referral approved by Kaiser. Of course, I'm reasonable and don't want him to add if it means I'll vomit. I realize I have to do some of the work and the band is just the tool but darn it, if I could control my eating, I wouldn't have needed the band in the first place. So, I just expect the band to do more for me than what it is doing right now. Thanks for listening.
  11. Had my three month visit yesterday. I was really trying to hit that 50 pound mark but missed it by 1 pound. Arghh!! The surgeon was very pleased with my progress. He kept asking about complications or how I've felt, like he couldn't believe my answers about feeling like a million bucks! He told me I looked great and when I said "Thanks to you", he said no, that I had done all the hard work and his part was just a small part of it all. Very nice surgeon! I told him I would be his poster child for relative lightweights and he asked me if I would be willing to post before and after pics on his website and Facebook page. I told him sure. Well, when I posted my pics on his Facebook page, I didn't realize it would post to my timeline and all my friends and family would see it. I hadn't told them all about having surgery. I got SO many positive likes and comments about my weight loss and not one negative comment about having had surgery. So, the cat's out of the bag, now!
  12. I was self-pay and the hospital based surgeons cost much more. That is, the hospitals charge a bigger cut. Cincy wt loss center uses an out patient surgery center, so it has less overhead. (it is still loaded with all the newest gadgets and the place is lovely and spotless) My DH had bypass surgery at Kettering when the unit was new and other than one nurse in the icu (who was an idiot) he had great care.
  13. I haven't read all the response, so perhaps this has already been mentioned. Yes, losing weight without the band is possible. But keeping it off is another matter altogether. So your friends/family have seen you lose weight before and they've seen you put it back on. Wouldn't they like to see you keep it off this time? That's the whole point of losing the weight. And beyond about a 35 BMI to lose weight is more difficult and next to impossible to keep off. I have dieted before. I've lost weight. I want to say the most I've lost on my own was 40 lbs and that was back in HS. Since then I've yo-yoed my way up the scale. With the band, I've not only lost more in one weight-loss endeavor than ever before, but when I've slipped in my eating habits, it hasn't been near as bad as it has been in the past. I know that this time will be for good and it is certainly a relief.

    30 lbs....Should I be happy??

Of course you should be happy! It's 30 pounds less than what you had when you started and typically at that 25-30 pound mark is where people really begin to notice you're losing weight, which give us additional motivation to lose more. Keep your protein up, carbs down and exercise. Don't skip meals and drink you daily amount of water. You should have no problem with steady weight loss. Congrats on your success.
  15. Hi all - I was banded on the 19th Dec and have had 2 fills, one of 4cc's and one of 1.5cc's and I'm scheduled for another fill next week. Here's what I want to know... what does restriction - the sweet spot - feel like when you eat?? I've had a couple of minor 'stuck' episodes when I eat something too quickly or without chewing properly, but each time, I just wait a couple of minutes, and it goes down. I'm finding that I'm a little bit less hungry than I used to be, but I can still eat a big meal - I've had big huge salads, I've had sushi dinners with rice, I've eaten a 1/2 bagel with lots of tuna salad on it. My weight loss is slow - and only happens when I really focus on exercise and restricting my own food. Can you tell me what the sweet spot really feels like? What's the sensation you get when you eat? Does it stop you from eating a big meal?? Thanks in advance, I just need help deciding how much of a fill to get next week.
  16. Hi. I have a BMI 37.9. Does anyone know if everyone has to do the pre liquid diet? And I've read that it's possible of loosing hair. I already have very fine hair. Has anybody experienced this? Sent from my SM-G920I using BariatricPal mobile app

    Why am I hungry?

I am 3 weeks post op and I have lost 12 kilos so far, but I am hungry. I am eating less than before, but my weight loss has stopped and I am worried I have lost focus:sad: I have had a hard couple of weeks. My son was in hospital for 2 weeks and I stayed with him. he seems on the mend, but its been so hard seeing him so sick. I was only 7 days post op when he got sick, so in some way all my plans went out the window. I have an appointment on Feb 26th for my first fill, does that help? Help

    24 hours post banding

I thought you had to wait six weeks as well, but the doc said that it was ok to do it right away so the weight loss can begin. It was not a large fill.

    1st fill a bust!

I had surgery on 9/11. My first fill on 10/13 and it didn't do a thing for me! I've only lost about 12 pounds total and it's really depressing. Does anyone know if it takes longer to lose if you start out around the 215 range? I know this sounds crazy but sometimes I wonder if my body thinks I'm starving it and the weight doesn't come off. On:confused: the days I eat a little more, I will see a small weight loss. How insane is that?

    Hi New member

Good job on weight loss! Yes it is the toughest part of the whole process.

    Highlights and waiting post sleeve

You can do whatever you want to your hair. If you're going to lose some, then you're going to lose some and it doesn't matter what you do. It's not a vitamin issue, nor even a weightloss issue. It's surgery and the anesthesia. It will come back as long as you keep you're protein and vitamins up. Losing our hair isn't related to our weightloss, but growing it back is related to how healthy we keep ourselves in the process.

    Hi I'm new !

I'm not in Canada, but I think I'm about in the same stage as you are. I've been researching Sleeve and RNY for a year, and finally started the process a couple of months ago. I've had my first full work-up visit lasting several hours, met with the nut, exercise therapist, surgeon, had my psych eval, and am working through my 6 month supervised weight loss (in month 2 right now). Hoping for surgery in May/June. Good luck to you!
  23. I went through a long stall right after losing the first 2 weeks, but finally starting to lose again. I did measure and have lost between 2" and 2.5" off of each area. That's exciting at least. Anyone else going through that ? Slow loss, but inches going away?

    Long time bandsters

Four years out here and never had a problem. My weight loss averaged about 1.5 lb a week for the first year, although I tended to not lose for weeks and then suddenly lose 5lb. I started out with a BMI of 36 so I didnt expect the fast weight loss some had and I also refuse to EVER diet again, so no protein or calorie counting for me either. The second year I lost the other 25lb or so very gradually. I exercised very vigorously all the way through and still do so I never needed to be very tight or dip down below 1500 calories a day or so. Consequently, I have pb'd probably 10 times in 4 years and have never been overfilled or had any issues at all. My band simply makes it easy to eat proper portions and i can eat any food. I didnt get fast loss and I worked darn hard for it exercise wise, but I found the eating side of the equation quite simple - I ate less and lost weight.
