I'm worried about the post-surgery diet until back to normal
HarleyNana replied to Feel2Young2B40's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Laura, you sound just like me, I don't like "funny" food. During the liquid stage I did have the yogurt that's like icecream, blended with a tiny bit of milk added, just because I needed the Protein. I didn't concentrate so much on what I ate as much as I concentrated on getting protein in. My doctor told me I could have anything that would go through a straw. I had gravy, popcicles, s/f hard candy, any kind of Soup I wanted, I just strained the "food" part out. Just remember you don't want to lose your hair, so think protein. If you have a spare $60.00 consider purchasing the Bullet, it's a small compact blender type appliance. It's sold at Walgreens, Wal-Mart. I got one for Christmas, but just opened the box Friday. Since then I've made several concotions (sp) with ice or frozen yogurt and lots of frozen fruits. You can make it thick enough to eat with a spoon or thin enough to sip. Just no chunks at the beginning/healing stage. Best of luck to you and scan through the food section, you will find many many many ideas. Oh yes, I tried 1 of those protein things, I don't like milk so obviously that didn't work for me. If you like milk you can do Carnation Instant Breakfast. -
10/14/09 - Teenagers, can we shoot them?
tonya66 commented on tonya66's blog entry in Sunshine2's (Tonya's) Journal
Drama, drama, drama......story of my life these days with two teenagers in the house. My 16 year old got grounded, so I took her phone away from her, well, she thinks she is smarter than me so she sneaks around and buys herself a "trackphone" or "pay as you go phone" so I wouldn't know about it. I'm not stupid, everytime in the past I have taken her phone, she beggs me for it back, does extra chores etc. This time, she didn't say a word, I could tell it didn't even bother her so I figured she snuck around and got her a phone. Last night I found it hidden under her pillow. SCORE 1 for me! Well, being the concerned mother, I find a lot of text to this one boy that we have forbid her to see, and let me tell you, IT WAS NOT PRETTY AT OUR HOUSE LAST NIGHT! I don't think my daughter will be leaving the house until she is about 20 years old now. I've pretty much grounded her for the rest of her teenage years. Needless to say, with all this drama, I didn't make it to the gym tonight which even made me more mad! Tonight we are having a meeting with our daughter and our Elders from church to finish up our little discussion, so I doubt I will make it tonight, but I might.....depends on how long it last and how emotionally drained I am afterwards. Kids are wonderful, but teenagers........can we shoot them? lol. Tia0610 replied to BOB052212's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery 5/23 I've also been doing well .my Dr office said puréed food only and eat slow and have 6small meals a day high in protein and drink drink drink water but don't gulp I would have been starving if I only had yogurt and water . That's awesome your doing so well ! -
Had Surgery 5.22.12 & very happy to report that I feel great! Traveled 2.5 hours to Washington DC was able to walk 3.5 miles to visit the MLK, Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln Memorials. Did all of that walking in 95 degree weather on a Greek yogurt and a bottle of Dasani Water! Just made it back to NJ and had my dinner, Sabras Garlic Hummus, and Solid White Tuna, no mayo but made with french's honey mustard (10 calories) I encourage all of my co recent bandsters to get moving, allow the band to restrict your intake, and allow your excercise to burn off the pounds!

Kelli since your body is now using fat reserves for energy your fatigue is probably due to recovering from major surgery in itself or potentially dehydration vs not enough calories. * hugs* this too shall pass I get any liquids the first week after surgery: tomato soup, milk, smooth yogurt, etc. They told me creamed soups ar eok if blenderized or strained. (but of course follow your own directions). I'm sure it's good you chewed chunks really well. How did you tolerate the soup?? My understanding is it's not to prevent stomach pouch stretching, but to prevent vomiting and band slippage while the stomach heals where they've stitched the lower portion to the new pouch to secure the band. I'm in so much pain today I'm tempted to take my post op pain medication. I did something to my back overnight at work. I just took some tylenol so hopefully that'lll do the trick. Usually I take motrin but that's out being pe-op. I just have the rest of today and tomorrow left. I'll sleep on and off today then all night since I worked graveyard last night, have an all-day class tomorrow....then surgery Tuesday at 7am (Pacific Time) I'm getting rather nervous.

This is my 4th day on liquids and it is much better...I did have a frozen yogurt today...but i know I have been eating under 700 calories/day. I was never really a Soup fan to begin with....so I have been adding Tapatio to all my soup to spice it up a bit. Goto my 4 hour nutrition class on Tuesday....Still looking for other people from the Los Angeles area around here.

Eating the same meals
Inner Surfer Girl replied to Lisa_85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What do you like? Try fish, tuna, turkey, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, etc. My Breakfast this morning was Greek yogurt with fresh raspberries. Yesterday for dinner I cut up some tomato, and added some tzatziki sauce, a little feta, Kalamata olives and mixed it into cottage cheese. -

Anyone else have May 27 surgery date?
jajmj replied to wilbskinny's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, day 3 post surgery. I have never taken so many naps in my life although I am NOT complaining! Having to remember to eat/drink 4 oz of liquid every hour is interesting. I know I get a little more tired after I have something besides water - like jello or yogurt. Same routine til my follow up appointment with my surgeon on Tuesday and my PCP on Wednesday. We shall see what the next phase brings. Anyone else have a post-op update? -
paulinamdiaz welcome newbie 3 weeks PO?? since you didn't say otherwise, hope things are going smoothly with your recovery you are probably still in the clear liquid phase???? not supposed to "treat" yourself to yogurt, cottage cheese til the "soft" stage i was lucky - i llllloved the popsicle!!!! no prob eating lots!!!! have you tried chicken broth??? unless your doc/nut tells you differently - you have to wait on the yogurt sorry bud

I'm 7 weeks post-op & I can tolerate most foods. Salads are fine as long as the veggies are not super crunchy (raw carrots) & I omit celery (too fiberous), even though celery is one of my fave foods! I stay away from mashed potatoes because I LOOOOOVE them but they do not love me anymore Unjury products are great! I use the cheese sauce over steamed broccoli. Greek yogurt is my hero! I can always get that down no matter what. I have to admit that I have given in to temptations a handful of times. My boyfriend made pancakes the other day & I ate half of one. But I paid for it for about 45 mins with pain & discomfort! I also ordered a toasted bagel with light cream cheese without even thinking on my way to work one morning and after my second bite that horrible feeling happened & I had to suffer at work for almost an hour! Also, the other day & started to get a horrible headache at work & my coworker poured a small cup of regular caffinated soda for me & I sipped it slowly. My headache went away but my tummy was quite upset with me for a while! Deli meats are fine, a small 4-6 oz glass of milk works wonders for any tummy upset & trouble sleeping, hard boiled eggs, tuna salad, chicken, fish, etc. I also love GNC Total Lean protein shakes: 25 grams of protein & they taste great. I miss things like an English muffin with my egg whites or a comforting PB&J sandwich with a glass of milk, but the scale numbers keep me very focus, motivated, & happy! It really comes down to trying things to see how you handle them. I was never a big fish eater, but with all the great recipes out there, I have fish 2-3 times a week! And plain, non-fat Greek yogurt can be used in place of mayo & sour cream in evreything! Oh also, I was always a guzzler of natural fruit juices (OJ, apple), but they make me feel horrible for a super long time! Too much suger, even though it's natural sugar from the fruit, it's just too much and I feel sick to my stomach & dizzy for the rest of the day even after one sip! Plain water, G2, diet Snapple, tea, Crystal Light: the only way to go for liquids!

Every protein shake I have tried tastes terrible to me. I am almost a week out. Anyone have any good suggestions? I have been eating cottage cheese, Greek yogurt and soups that are all liquified down, but really struggling to get my proteins and water in. My mid-back aches and I just don't feel hungry. I am starting to feel a little weak. I have only urinated twice today. Anyone have any good advice?

You need to be extremely careful! Ice cream, is on my no way list. My surgeon said it was a slider food & could impede my weight loss. Plus, the magical period of the sleeve will not last forever...use this time to retrain yourself to enjoy healthy foods! I'm amazed that I actually like yogurt & veggies!

Gain weight....on purpose.
shiftymcgee replied to shiftymcgee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm allergic to whey and since it seems to be in everything I don't handle shakes so well. I do make a shake with blended cottage cheese and yogurt tho and it's quite good. I can eat great or like a trashcan and it doesn't seem to matter. I fluctuate up and down two or three pounds. I need to gain back quite a bit of fat as I'm having the fat sucked out and put into my bum. I don't want bum implants so I gotta get some fat on the go. -
I have been using the car master brand at my local store Krogers I get the car master protein milk for my protein shakes and then I get the carbmaster key lime pie and cinnamon roll flavor yogurts. Yogurts are 9g protein in a 1/2 cup portion.

After Surgery Taste Issues
Berry78 replied to shellyv0120's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, lets think about this objectively. First off, you are going to be OK. Even if you can't tolerate milk or protein shakes/powders, you aren't going to starve to death in a couple weeks. You need to call your surgeon and get suggestions. Here are some things you can discuss: You do need to get calories on board, so what is liquid and has calories? Broth! Bone broth and homemade broth has about 8g of protein per 8oz. If you can drink 2 quarts of that a day you'll meet your fluid and protein goals. (Homemade should be made with meat and bones, and simmer for at least 8 hours. I like using a big package of chicken legs.) Fruit juice, vegetable juice (early for tomatoes, but other types may work) Thin, runny cream of wheat (not technically a liquid, so do not try without your surgeons permission) Chocolate milk (might go down easier than white. Sugar free flavorings would be better, but even regular sugar is better than nothing). Coconut water Liquid yogurt (thinned) has sugar and fruit, but if you can tolerate it...and you'll get some protein to boot. Once you get to purees you can start blending up real food and should really start meeting your goals. Hope this helps.. -
I had my band put in over 2 yrs ago. My doctor was very strict - liquids only for the first 4 weeks, but he included Protein drinks in with the liquids. In fact, I had a Protein Drink the day after my surgery while still in the hospital. I just recently read thru my post op instructions again (for the heck of it!) and I'm so mad at myself! I thought he wrote that I was to be on clear liquids + Protein Drinks for 4 weeks. After a week or so, I was starving so I added cream Soups to the mix. I thought I was cheating the whole time. It read "clear liquids, yogurt, pudding and creamy soups". I would ask your doctor to verify the info. That seems like a long time to go without any protein. Altho you can get protein in Isopur (you can get it from GNC online) and it's a clear liquid. You can also get powdered flavorless protein that you can add to any clear liquid if necessary. I drank ONE of the Isopures I bought (a $100 worth) after my surgery. My nurse said they tasted like Jolly Ranchers. They don't. I think they're nasty. But if it's true that s/he wants you on only clear liquids, it's nice to know there's a choice. Good luck. Hope they let you eat creamy stuff too - it's nice to know you haven't cheated when you start starving! Marci

This is the one I've used, and found when trying to find something without rice or noodles. I added some creole seasoning to the chicken when I was pan searing it in some EVOO before adding it to the casserole dish. I'm a big fan of changing flavor profiles, and change this recipe by using different spices on the chicken breasts. Seasonings/spices I've used have been lemon pepper, creole and cajun seasoning, garlic pepper, and even some of the italian seasonings (thyme, basil, oregano). . . http://www.freequickrecipes.com/recipes/cream-cheese-broccoli-chicken.php I sub nonfat, plain Greek yogurt for the mayo, and only use 4 chicken breast halves, and use broccoli florets instead of spears because I hated chewing the "stems".

Eleven days post op and if I was on Iron Chef, my battle would be ...
LipstickLady posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Protein vs. liquid Cuz it sure as heck can't be both. I got in a record amount of fluids today at the pool! I figured that was more important after spending an entire day in the sun. For the first time, I got down 40 oz of Water, but I had to force myself to eat 2oz of yogurt and 2 oz of creamed Soup and I am paying for it now. My youngest can't stop herself from giggling at the ferocious noises that are coming from my throat. Fortunately, before I drank all that, I got in one entire Protein shake so I got some protein in, but when I opened the second, it went back in the fridge after a few sips. Ugh... One day at a time, right? Still no complaints but it sure is weird having the FULL feeling up so high instead on in a thanksgiving tummy. I really wouldn't be unhappy staying this way IF I could figure out how to work out a belch faster. Ideas? (And if one more person goes to burp me like an infant, they will be gagging on their own teeth, for real!) -
Smoothies - off limits?
Clementine Sky replied to swinglifeaway's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I never order smoothies when I'm out and about like I used to because they're often low in Protein and high in sugar, but I have them at home all the time. Trader Joe's Greek yogurt and Fage have around 22 grams of protein per cup and make a good base for a smoothie. Siggi's is also low in carbs and high in protein. I add a cup of frozen berries or nectarines that have 20 carbs or less, fresh berries, or something like Del Monte's natural peach cups (sugar free is 12 carbs). I top it with a couple of tablespoons of Trader Joe's chia seeds for protein and fiber, and then some ice. I also enjoy smoothies I make using Fair Life milk and Trader Joe's frozen sweet potatoes (which are relatively low in carbs) with a little sugar free Torani pumpkin pie syrup or pumpkin pie spice. I'll sometimes make smoothies using protein powder, milk, Pic's Peanut Butter (delicious and 1 gram of carb) or PB2. -
I still have them occasionally - but I make them differently than I did pre-surgery. Now I use less fruit and add Protein powder (if you use a fruit-flavored protein powder, it makes up for some the loss of flavor you'd get from the extra (real) fruit). I also use unsweetened almond or cashew milk now instead of juice. I usually add plain Greek yogurt to boot - but I did that before surgery as well. and of course I don't drink a giant size amount anymore, either.
