Bill Potts replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi I had gastric sleeve surgery on march 18, 2021 at Cleveland Clinic by Dr Benscath. I am doing wonderfully well. I met my goal a long time ago and I am trying to slow down my weight loss. This is my first day on this website and hope all is well with you guys. -
Am I really going to live on 1000 calories?
Butterflyeffect replied to doobie31's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi @doobie31, I also think it may depend on the type of surgery you end up having. I had the SADI and during the loss phase I was very satisfied and consistently lost each week when I consumed 700 to 800 calories per day. Now that I’m trying to maintain, I’m up around the 1600 to 1800 calories a day and if I’m very active then I need around 2000 to not lose more weight. With my restriction, I am finding it difficult to each that much at the moment but it will get easier over time. Each person is different and will have different needs but as all of the other posts have said, it becomes a new way of living and it’s definitely worth it. Good luck and I look forward to hearing about your journey!! -
Is my weight loss normal?
catwoman7 replied to ReginaH's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
P.S. Just wanted to add that some people don't even see a big drop during month 1. Most of that big initial drop is water weight - so for people that lost a lot of weight prior to surgery, that "water weight" is long gone. I lost 16 lbs the first month, 12 lbs the second, and then I averaged around 10 for a few months after that (give or take). I ended up losing over 200 lbs, so in the long run, it's how committed you are to your program rather than your rate of weight loss that matters. -
I had gastric bypass on 09/09/2021 and I have lost 39 lbs. so far after 10 1/2 weeks. Is this a normal amount of weight loss for that amount of time? People will ask me how much weight I've lost and when I tell them they ask if I've been cheating. I have been following the plan but it bothers me that I'm not losing faster.

I was also diagnosed with diabetes type 2 no meds just dieting (which was not my thing 😂) and exercise. My surgeon told me your glucose levels will start to get better. I’ve read that in most cases or about in 85% diabetes would be cured aka go into remission . I have seen my numbers come done from an average of 150-160 fasting pre-op to pre-diabetes number 100-120 which is not bad at all. And again I know all bodies are different. I would love to read from fellow members that have gone thru same experience, and theu marvelous tool of weight loss surgery and lifestyle changes their diabetes has been cured, gain better control or gone into remission.

Yes its tough! My liquid preop started and ended on 10/24 till 10/31, unfortunately im the one who cooks, hubby didn't. So yes everyday i cheated with one meal during the preop diet. Had only water, ate a very small meal, like a ham/cheese sandwich. Had chicken breast(eating clean) and lost 10lbs that week and had no problems during surgery. Now its very easy to cook, see everyone eat, doesnt bother me. But im 3 weeks post op and hair loss settled in which is frustrating. Good luck, youre gonna rock this! I had a one week pre op diet. And i did see my surgeon on the 18th and told the nurse of my weight loss stall. She said, its because im not meeting my protein/water goals, and thats true. Later that night, had a zoom meeting, with another nurse from the surgeons office, and talked about hair loss as a random topic. She also mentioned same thing(protein/water goals), and adding zinc and biotin, using baby shampoo(because of less chemicals) and washing hair one or two times per week. I started biotin and zinc yesterday. And its tough for me to make it to my 80g protein and 64oz. I just didnt expect this so soon. Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app

How much did weight loss slow down for you?
Arabesque replied to lindseylovesdogs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At two months I’d lost about 12kg (26lbs) from my surgery weight & by the end of the 3rd month I’d lost about another 5kg (11lbs) so it was slowing by then. But as @The Greater Fool said, we all lose at our own rate. There are many factors that influence your rate of loss: age, gender, starting weight, metabolic rate, genetics, etc. I’d encourage you to have a conversation with your dietician & surgeon about your progress especially if you’re concerned & as you’re still predominately getting your nutrition from protein shakes. What does your plan recommend you should be eating at this point? Personally I gave shakes up from week 3 purée stage - was always my intention. At two & three months I was eating 1/4 - 1/3 cup of food 3 times a day plus a high protein yoghurt or yoghurt drink. Also had started adding vegetables & a little fresh fruit. But we are different in what & how much we can eat eat as we progress. I hear you about the dizziness & lack of energy. Dizziness caused by drops in blood pressure is not uncommon to begin (unless you’re like me & always had a tendency to low blood pressure & then you live with it forever). Try adding an electrolyte drink to your fluids each day to give you a good boost. I carried a bottle of diluted hydralyte with me everywhere for months. -

lindseylovesdogs replied to lindseylovesdogs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i'm not really able to eat aside from protein shakes. i can finish maybe 1oz of soft/puree foods. im not really exercising because im too weak/dizzy most of the time. i know the answer is probably just that i should be taking in more but im not sure if the loss is becoming too fast. -
Hit plateau after 4 weeks post op
NovaLuna replied to EsojLabina's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are several thousand posts about something called the 'three week stall'. It happens usually within the first month post op to the majority of people who have the surgery. Your body is simply taking time to adjust itself. Most of the time there really isn't anything you can do, but to ride it out. Stalls happen. Often times, you can change the way you eat to try and start it back up or add in exercise and nothing will change. They, on average last 1-3 weeks. It'll end when it ends. Just stick to your plan and you'll be fine. I've had multiple stalls throughout my journey, including several (3) that went into the 40-odd day range. They are incredibly frustrating and disheartening, especially when you're no where near your goal weight. You don't get used to them, even if you're like me and get them a LOT. In fact, I just got out of my longest stall yet! I thought, 'this is it, I'm in maintenance' and yet after being in a stall for 46 days I lost a pound. Then 4 days later I lost another pound. So my body just wants to lose at it's own pace. You're still in the beginning of your journey and your weight loss WILL pick up again as this stall is extremely common! Just keep to your plan and it'll break eventually! -
How much did weight loss slow down for you?
lindseylovesdogs posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So, after the first month and after the first plateau, how much did your weight loss slow down? at what rate were you losing? like around month 2-3 i'm starting to worry that i'm losing too fast -
We all react differently but for most it does tend to start around month 3. Just a thought but did you have a long pre surgical diet (months not weeks)? If you did maybe your protein levels have been low for a while already unless you were vigilant about your intake. If you also lost a considerable amount of weight during the pre surgical diet your body might have gone into shock earlier too & the surgery was the last straw so to speak. These things are what stimulate & accelerate our natural hair loss cycle & suddenly we’re losing handfuls of hair. Give your surgeon a call & see what they suggest why it’s happening earlier.

Scheduled for the sleeve on Dec 22 was put in liquid diet today by Drs MA but the paperwork she sent me says 28 days before surgery which is way out from today. Also I’m to loose 5 pounds a week or 20 pounds loss by surgery date. I’m 216 and 5’7” that seems to me like a lot of weigh to loose in that time but I’m gonna try!

A kilogram and a half per week is a lot of loss. I would have maybe lost about that much myself in my pre-op - maybe even a little less. You also weigh less than I did at my surgery weight. Relax. You'll be fine. If you stuck to your diet, your liver will have shrunk. Best advice pre AND post-op is don't obsess over the scales and don't compare your weight loss rate to others. We're all different. Hospital packing - comfy clothes to leave hospital in, toothbrush and paste, face and hands moisturisers (hospital air just sucks moisture out), phone charger. I took my Kobo e-reader but couldn't concentrate with all the painkillers etc.

Hi everyone! Monday is my surgery date and the last two weeks almost ive been super strict on my pre-op diet but ive only lost 3.3kg Start weight was 103.6kg and im 100.3kg this morning. Ive heard of people losing so much more in their pre-op and this small loss really makes me anxious that my liver hasnt shrunk enough😱 i have been told that my bipolar medication can make the weight loss slower though but omg this still makes me anxious! Only a few weeks ago my GP said i have moderate fatty liver disease(after ultrasound) and the surgeon decided a 2 week pre-op will be fine. But im still so anxious that my liver will be too large and they will need to cancel the surgery. What was your loss in pre-op? Guess i just need to feel some sort of reassurance Also, packing for hospital! Anything youd recommend as essential to take?

I had my RYN on Nov 1st, recovered well, and just washed my hair and noticed bunch of hair came out, and i was in disbelief, brushed my hair and a string of hair came out! I cannot believe that i am in hair loss? At 18 days? I am supposed to be on the puree stage, but i like only light and fit greek yogurts by Dannon and chicken broth with carrots. But i do struggle to get in the 80g of protein and water because of the chest pain when drinking/eating as jt passes down. I have to go very slow. Is this "normal" to have hair loss before 3 weeks? I agree. If your body isn't getting enough nutrients it literally hold on to every calorie. Take a look at this article. https://www.womenshealthmag.com/weight-loss/a19998301/what-is-starvation-mode/

I had a chat with my dietitian about hair loss after my 1 week post op. She said that if your protein intake is low, regardless if you are taking biotin, it will not work. I’m finishing the liquid stage and I am relying to protein shakes and paleo/keto broths for my protein intake. Idk how will I force myself to eat puréed meat. Maybe holding my nose while chewing it. Eekkkk.

Im not a slow eater either and at 16 weeks surgery hasnt changed that but i try. I can drink a reasonable amount of water now and i rarely take my vitamins i think as long as i am are eating a varied diet its ok.all my bloods have come back good so far although I am experiencing hair loss at the moment so i am trying not to stress about that but thats normal so see how it goes.

Post op.... Taste in my mouth... Its it normal?
Tony B - NJ replied to Lou51's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
The taste is that you are in ketosis. You are eating low fat and low carb so your body goes into Ketosis and you get that weird taste in your mouth. during Ketosis you burn fat like crazy so keep the carbs low and let it happen. Make sure you are getting your protein and taking your vitamins. It will get better as you get on a normal diet but enjoy the rapid weight loss now. -
Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first
ms.sss replied to chiquitatummy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Oh that wasn’t my first drinking with a post-wls bod. im 3 years out now and drink quite regularly (bring on the concerned comments, I’m ready!) my fIrst attempt at alcohol was 3-4 weeks post. I had maybe two sips of red wine and it slightly burned a little and I swear I could feel it travel down my intestines. With so little drank, it had no effect on me. second attempt was closer to 2 months post had a few sips of a sugary soju drink and I had a several hour long dumping episode. Not pretty. I probably had 5 or so PARTIAL drinks my ENTIRE weight loss phase. It got me tipsy quickly even with small amounts of less than 1/3 a drink, and I could tell I wouldn’t be able to drive….but I also sobered up really quickly. fast forward to now and i can drink maybe 2 drinks in succession (like in under an hour) and be pretty toasted…if I nurse the drinks over a period of time I can keep from getting too drunk. And I still sober up really quick. oh and I mostly stay away from sugary mixers if I can help it… -
I was always hungry since the day I got out of surgery. I had been on metformin for weight loss (I don't have diabetes) and it made me less hungry, so after I couldn't stand being hungry all the time, they put me back on it, and it has really helped a lot. Some people get nausea or diarrhea from it. I also would talk to your nutritionist about how much you SHOULD be eating. It could be that you're eating too little and actually need to increase your calories. I haven't tried contrave but make sure your insurance will cover it because it's going to be very expensive most likely.

How much weight did you lose in the first 3 months?
Losefly replied to ac0181's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Couldn’t agree more with all the advice above. The goal is a future healthy life style. The first weeks weight loss is not a predictor of that. It’s hard in the first month or so to see the light, but if you work the process you’re going to succeed. We all seem to use the scale to measure success so I get it. I did the same thing and did experience the three week post op stall. I too was frustrated and concerned, but I held steady, it passed and I continued to see success. I’m three months out and have surpassed my original expectations. -
I am 6 months post op from sleeve surgery. I've lost 73 pounds from my highest weight, but only 58 pounds since surgery. I'm eating 800-1000 calories a day, getting my protein and liquids, taking all my vitamins and exercising 5 or 6 days a week. The weight loss has stalled over the last 2 months, and I am so frustrated. I feel great physically, but am discouraged and disappointed. My primary care doctor spoke to me yesterday about trying Contrave. Have any of you tried it after surgery? What was your experience?
