To tell or not to tell
BriarRose replied to Michael2428's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I told only a couple closest friends. My adult daughter who lived with me at the time knew. I took time off work for some surgery. HIPPA NO one needs to know at work. I am a therapist. I do not think you need to declare - if you are normally a private person why would you decide to "tell" people - It is a medical procedure. And you ARE ALREADY dieting, and you are making life-style changes In no way was I or am I, 10 years later embarrassed about it or anything else. It is a decision my doctors and I made. I continue to live that same lifestyle - I eat healthfully. I eat intentionally. When I see people who knew me 130 pounds ago, and they say something, I tell them that I made some drastic lifestyle changes. And I have. I don't lie. If someone asks me directly, I will tell them. (well, most the time - there are just some humans who do not need that information or any personal information !) I completely OWN the decision I made. the surgery was a one day thing. It gave me an important tool. Tell who you want to. Or don't. Everyone at work assumed I had a hysterectomy - I had that a few years before and didn't announce that either. Your body. Your life. Take control of all of it. -
Low BMR after bariatric surgery
Prestonandme replied to over65's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm just over 60 and was told several times by both my nutritionist and surgeon that the best way to boost BMR is to build muscle. AARP currently is hosting a "Get Moving" video series for strengthening the body, something that we older people need to do. Here's a link to the first videos: https://campaigns.aarp.org/getmovingLP1/?cmp=IM-HEALTH-HL-LPTWO-2020-Previous It requires a time investment of as little as 10 minutes a day. -

Hello welcome to the forum! I’m new as well I made an account after google searching older topics out of curiosity and yes I’d like to have a team that is there for me but I realized he was only in it for the money he’s commercialized in my city I never noticed it until after I consulted with him. But I’m here on day 10 kinda of improving just not eating or drinking in fear of damage that could happen. I hope that you are ready and research this! I researched everything from top to toe and I still have some reservations after having the surgery. Good luck! -
MAY-JUNE-JULY 2020 BYPASSERS UNITE!! Veterans Welcome too!
LizzieMmmkay replied to MaybeMeow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I finally have my surgery date scheduled for July 16! I started doing the WLM and the long list of insurance requirements back in September 2019. Due to Covid getting my surgery date was delayed right as I had completed everything I needed to have done. Yet, now that I have a date I have been a ball of emotions today. I’ve been reading everyone’s posts and am happy to be able to connect with other people that have gone through or will be going through with gastric bypass. I have to admit I did the Covid slide to the dang fridge from being cooped up with 3 kids that I suddenly was responsible for teaching, along with balancing everything else during these crazy times. I had to do my meetings over the phone with my nutritionist since our group could no longer meet. I felt like it was never going to happen given the circumstances in the world right now. Thankfully before I received the call that I had been approved by my insurance and received an official surgery date today I had already started the pre-op diet to get on track a couple days ago. Good luck to everyone out there on this journey! I am so happy that I’m about to join you all on the losers bench! 5’6” HW- 319 CW-288 Goal- Anything under 200 and healthy! -
July 2020 Surgery anyone?
LizzieMmmkay replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I finally received the call today that my surgery was approved and will be on July 16 for Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. I’m a ball of emotions! I started this journey back in September 2019 to complete the long list of insurance requirements with different doctor’s & specialists, and attended WLM each month. Then Covid hit right as I had completed everything on my checklist. I have been in limbo land waiting to see what would shake out. Honestly, even though it’s overdue I was still surprised that they’re getting me in as soon as they are. I just hope nothing goes sideways from here to there with my date, because that would just be my luck at this point lol! I’m excited to get more active on here with a great group of knowledgeable people! Good luck to all you fellow July surgery patients! See you all on the losers bench! -

Starting my PS journey-first consults today
kristieshannon posted a topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I’m now 18 lbs from goal, which if I continue on my trend I should hit in October. I want a lower body lift, arm lift, and breast lift done. I met with two surgeons today, and have a third consult next week. I was very surprised in the different opinions/approaches of the two doctors today. Both were very nice, personable, and professional and per their photos have good results and good reviews online. Here’s what they had to say: Arm lift: Doc #1 said he could do all three procedures on the same day. He said my arms would have a great outcome, would require a compression garment for 2-4 weeks, each would have a drain in for the first 7 days. Doc #2 does arm lifts as an in office procedure under local anesthesia only! Internal sutures only with minimal steri strips, NO compression garment, said he often has people return to work after just a day or two off! Breast lift: Doc #1 pushed hard for implants, which I don’t want and don’t think I need. I’m a 36DD right now and wouldn’t mind if the tissue removed from the lift dropped me a cup size. He would do the lift/implant same surgery as the other procedures. Doc #2 agreed my breast size is fine, and would look great with just a lift. He would do the lift along with the LBL. Lower body lift: Doc #1 said he’d do a belt lipectomy and would leave in a drain on each side. Doc #2 said I don’t need a belt lipectomy, just a extended hip-to-hip incision. Again, NO drains. He uses a quilted internal stitching technique which he said reduces drainage to nearly none. Doc #2 is who I am leaning towards. He has about 10 years more experience. Sounds like his recoveries are quicker and easier. I’d say their photo results and reviews are on par with each other. The quote for Doc #2 was about $6000 less ($40,000 vs $34,000). Both doctors agreed a December/January planned surgery time frame is reasonable. I’m so excited to be starting down this road! Hopefully after my third consultation on Thursday I come away with a clear preference. I’ll update this thread as I go along. Bat wing photo for reference, I’ve lost about 10 more pounds since this was taken. -

February 2020 Post-Op Thread
lisafrommassachusetts replied to ResaRoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Great to hear from so many folks on here! I'm plugging along, I'm down a little over 50 pounds including the pre-surgery loss. I'm losing about a pound to 2 per week now. I've been walking a lot, and have started doing some more rigorous walks, although not anything that counts as "hiking"...My knees feel so much better, my stamina is up, my lung capacity is better. I try to make sure I get up and move for at least 5 to 10 minutes every hour, not so much for the calorie burn but to keep my metabolism up. It's been hard at times not to fall into grazing...We are home so much because of the pandemic, and at one point I was working from home 4 days a week. I try to keep hard boiled eggs, tuna or chicken salad ready in the fridge so if I need a snack I can have some protein. I also found I love sunflower butter, and a tablespoon of that with a half an apple, or some protein crackers is a great little snack for me. Frozen shrimp is also a new staple for me; I often have a salad with 6 shrimp for lunch, or make up a shrimp salad with reduced calorie mayo and lemon juice, red pepper, onions and celery. I am completely off the protein shakes, except I use Premier Cafe Latte in my coffee. I have a protein bar once or twice a week, but mostly because I like them. I eat between 800 and 1000 calories per day, which the nutritionist was happy with. Downsides: hair loss! Which is really bad right now, don't know why, maybe because I've lost enough weight to trigger it; Extra skin, especially on the upper arms, and boy head hunger is real. Also, I think the novelty is wearing off, I find myself thinking stupid things, like "I could eat just a quarter of the jelly donut" or "1 piece of pizza would be ok". So basically I am lusting after other people's food! I keep telling myself in maintenance I can try an indulgence once in awhile. I miss having a couple of drinks. My daughter is coming for a visit this Saturday, and we will socially distance out in the yard, and I would love to mix up some sangria (I make mine with rum and red wine....). Cucumber mint water will have to do! Stay well everyone! Nice to hear from folks! -
I started in 2010 with my sleeve. I was 54 years old. 320 pounds 5’2” - I got. To 175 at my lowest. I gained back 10 right away then another 40 in 10 years. Last summer I decided to lose 20 pounds in a year. I have lost 35. I am not even down to a normal weight by far - but I have gone from. Size plus 28 (at the start 10 years ago) to a 16 petite today. How ? Protein first. Lots of organic veggies, healthy fats, fruit. And some kind of “treat” everyday. I use complex carbs as “sprinkles” - if I am making baked potatoes for the family with dinner I might take a couple tablespoons and sprinkle it over my veggies. I do the same with pasta -chop it up and sprinkle on the veggies ! Life style changes. I garden and swim. No major exercising. And plan what I take to work. ( essential work in social services )

It’s been 10 years .... I am healthier now and got more energy to spend with my children! With 5 kids ages from 28 to 9 is very exhausting but rewarding! Losing all the weight made me live longer for them. This is the best decision I have ever made in my life! To all of you who are in this journey.... congratulations! You are doing great! -
18-month difference between these two photos. I was sleeved on 10/30 at 268 lbs. I’m now 160...down from a sz 20 to a 6/8 and feel amazing! Best decision ever!

I will admit that I have not gone through this but some advice I hear from My Level 10 Life (youtuber) is to start today. Don't wait for tomorrow or Monday, start today. Drink half your body weight in water, start tracking your food, start building positive, everyday habits. She offers a free habit tracker you can use if you want, just find her on Youtube. I hope this is helpful and I wish you the best!

HELP! I recently had gastric bypass, 6/16 to be exact. It's been 10 days and I have only lost 10 lbs [emoji35] is this normal? How much weight have you lost so far? Btw I had my 1st bowel-movement today for the first time since surgery, I feel like I should take magnesium citrate to get cleaned out..... but I'm just scared- I honestly don't want to make things worse. -
June Sleevers Post Op
futurefinemama replied to srgrl08's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey guys, I got sleeved on June 23rd. Whew its over. But honestly it wasn't too bad. Although, the gas pain was almost unbearable, it was in my chest, my back, my shoulders. Only way to relieve the gas was to walk. And boy did I walk, I looped the hospital halls like I was Flo Jo (in my mind). I only stayed one night in the hospital. I'm currently home trying to adjust to my new life. I'm on full liquids now. I have absolutely no appetite, I set my alarm when its time to eat. I am dealing with a bit of acid re flux or heart burn. Hopefully, this too shall subside. STATS: Total = I have lost 44lbs from my highest weight 8/31/2019 to current 2 week Pre op diet = 16lbs lost From surgery date to current = 8lbs. (two days) -
My sleeve was 6/2. One night in hospital - no issues. 2 weeks liquids, 2 weeks pureed and 1-2 weed soft foods coming up soon! At my 2 week check with surgeon I was down 18 pounds. I know we are not supposed to weigh everyday but I have some serious OCD. The weight definitely slowed after the first 2 weeks but as soon as I cut out dairy products it's coming off again. I had a very large hernia and have had to sleep in a recliner for like 5 years. I'm finally sleeping in bed, FLAT, like a baby. I can go to bed around 11 and wake up at 5:30 totally refreshed and ready to conquer the world. I'm following a scheduled of 3 shakes with 3 2 oz high protein pureed "meals" and making sure I get my water in. Every day around 5:30 or 6 I just crash. If I sit down during that time I fall asleep in like 10 seconds and sleep for about an hour. This is very unlike me -I'm not a napper. Then I wake up and I'm full of energy to go do stuff till like 10 pm. Anyone else experiencing this crash that late in the day?

I have not been on here in years but don’t know where to go for help. I had the sleeve on 6-10-13 I lost 135 pounds and was extremely happy with the results over the years I was able to maintain and would go up and down a little but stayed within 10 pounds of my lowest weight of 140. Then COVID hit and now I am working from home and don’t get out much and I am weighing in at 180. I am terrified to gain my weight back and can already feel it in my joints and such just the weight I put on. I can’t seem to get back on track. I need any ideas/tips that anyone can offer. Someone that has gone though a weight gain of 40 lbs and got it back off. thanks

July 2020 Surgery anyone?
locura79 replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was scheduled for July 23, but my governor just banned elective surgeries again. Now I have no idea when I'll be able to reschedule. I certainly don't want to be in a hospital with a bunch of COVID-19 patients, so I'm not really complaining. We shouldn't have opened as fast as we did. Just got my hopes up prematurely. 😞 -

Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!
Darktowerdream replied to ChubRub's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I meant to ask. I still can. I think on my own scale my weight before I left was 102.2 and yes there’s the Faja, drain, stockings to account for. I’m so exhausted from just small things I can’t think. I had a lot of swelling in my knees and feet in particular that thankfully has finally gotten better. Some issues with a stress point incision. I have one drain on my right hip. I don’t have the pictures, my surgeon does. But he is going to share them as part of the BariatricPal Hospital BC. I will find out when and where they share the photos. They edit them to maintain privacy. Most people don’t give permission but I chose to do so to support the Hospital which was founded by the same person that created these forums and the BariatricPal store. I find it interesting that some surgeons put patients in a binder immediately after surgery, or even Faja. I was wrapped in gauze, surgical tape etc. two days after surgery the outer bandaging was removed and everything checked and I got showered before the Faja was put on. (My brain is fuzzy on details) the thigh lift is the hardest so far to manage but I desperately needed it. I see some people’s before pictures and I think .... are you serious that’s normal compared to what mine was. the drain doesn’t bother me I know how to manage it. I’ve basically been doing the nursing doctoring whatever myself which I’ve done in my many surgeries in the past. (The difference though is my Myalgic Encephalomyelitis has grown worse over time. Life takes its toll as do all the other medical conditions.) Any questions and I will answer if I can. Not much else for me to do. Between Covid-19 and the heat/high humidity in Florida I have to avoid ... and my M.E. I’m fully homebound. I’m trying to remember to walk around but can’t do it outside. I want to even do laundry myself. Even if I could the machines are outside down a catwalk in a shared laundry room. -
soda water..... Oh, and you asked a very open ended question 😋 The soda thing varies from Dr to Dr. I am 10 months out and dink it on occasion with no complications. But, everyone's body is different, I would not drink it until you are a few months out in order to let your body heal.

update on 10 years out regain, and weight loss
BriarRose replied to BriarRose's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I am thinking about staying right here at the 185 mark for a while. For me, maintaining my weight, and knowing how to do that is important. So yes, I am still considered obese. My BMI is 34 unless you look at the age BMI and I get to be 33 BMI - I have lost and regained and then re lost weight. Started the journey at 320. Lost over 140 pounds Gained back 40 in 10 years Lost 35 in the past year. Just bought myself clothing in a size 16 petite. Not plus size anything. If I had wanted to hem pants, I could have bought size 14s. Not hemming pants. I walked into Kohls knowing I couldn't try on clothes. I bought 4 pr of capris and 2 pr of slacks all for work. mix and match with 10 tops and 2 light weight jackets. ALL on major sale - all guessing on sizing - needed to return 3 things that didn't look right for me. I am good for now. Will learn to maintain this weight within a few pounds either way. And feel like it is a huge success. I feel good. I am eating well. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, good proteins, some carbs, and a treat or two .... Using my tool 10 years out. -

Thank you all for responding. It us encouraging hearing your stories. I also have fibro so WAS taking 60 mg for that, so added tylenol arthritis extra strength for that. I have weaned myself to 10 mg a day on that. It makes me sweat soooooooo bad. It also helped my nerves though.
