I had my RNY at a CENTER OF EXCELLENCE also. I traveled 2 hours from home. I had to stay 1 week in a Hotel and went home after my 1 week check up. Not all CENTER'S OF EXCELLENCE live up to their names. My Surgeon did mine and my hubby's WLS. He was a good surgeon but really lacked at bedside manners. He called me a PROBLEM CHILD because I had Strictures and he had to do follow up care on me. 2 months after my RNY he did a failed revision from a lap band to a RNY on my husband. Who developed abscesses also was labeled as a Problem child!! Come to find out our MEDICARE and other insurance paid a certain amount for our surgery and aftercare. So he made his money doing the surgery not so much for the aftercare. So we ended up firing him and going to another BARIATRIC CENTER also an EXCELLENCE CENTER which is 4 hours away. So happy with our decision. But our blood test are faxed to our Bariatric Center. I am far enough out that I don't need to see them only if I have a problem. Better care, which helps with our confidence in them. Well worth the move!!

Great story, I guess my worst fear is that my liver won't have shrunk enough. I've lost 11 lbs in the first week of pre op. One more week to go.

Amber, You are not alone. My surgery is October 15 and have Been on a liquid diet for one week. I haven't lost but 2 pounds but I feel as if I am hungry all the time. Gets worst just before bed. I'm gonna just stick to it and hope everything works out. This pre-op is the WORST, but as I understand it is well worth it in the end. My surgeon did remind me that the purpose of the liquid protein diet is to shrink the liver, thus making surgery easier. Right now I don't know what to think. I'm just ready for the next week to go by!

This is my first post, although I have been lurking on this site since the beginning of the year. Today I flew from Orange County to Chicago for a week-long business trip. In the past, I have been close to the maximum seat belt span and have been dreading asking for an extension. I even checked the Southwest website and read the rules for "Persons of Size". Yep, that is really the term they use. You should read it; it is an odd combination of insulting and humorous. So I am down about 30 pounds now and was so happy to buckle the belt with plenty of room to spare. Even better, I was not the fat girl no one wants to squish next to in the next seat. The arm rest was not inching up because of me. Going down in clothing sizes is an incredible feeling, but this was even better than that. I love the little differences that show how far I have come!

I was able to drive three days after the pain pills were out of my system. That is about four or five days after surgery.

Pre-Op diet mistakes
DayOne Health replied to NYDani's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The reason for the pre-op liquid diet is to help shrink your liver. Your liver and stomach are close together so making your liver nice and thin will allow your surgeon better access to place the band around your stomach. When you follow a calorie restricted, low sugar, liquid diet, your liver will shrink enough to allow for a safer and quicker surgery. The purpose of the diet is not to make you lose weight, although that is often a side effect. In regards to cheating preventing you from getting the surgery - your surgeon will cancel the surgery only if you you will still have solid food in your stomach just before the surgery. In other words, if you feel like you need to cheat, stop 3 days before the surgery and you should be fine. Words of caution: Liquid diet is hard, but its additional benefit is to upstart your diet and lifestyle change. Following the surgery, you will need to stay one more week on a liquid diet, and then slowly progress toward solid foods (week 4). Without the prior prep in dieting, you may find it even harder after the procedure. Diet following the lap-band surgery is intended to get your stomach used to the band and slowly ease you into a new lifestyle. Good luck! -
I finished my last class on Friday, and I now have a tentative surgery date of July 28!! Only 5 weeks away. The past 6 months have flown by, and I can't believe I finally have my date! We're just waiting on approval from insurance now, but that's in Gods hands, and being as though I met their requirements, I'm not too worried. The reality of it all is really sinking in, but I am so ready and excited to start this next chapter of my life!!!

Colonoscopy next week .... oh joy ....
Dawnakers replied to ChristyAZ's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had mine and it was a breeze ... yes the prep sucked... but on a side note they did remove three benign polyps. TMI? Probably - but we are talking colonoscopies here... :-) -
I only have to do the diet one week before. I started Sunday with modified liquids. I'm allowed only veggies and plain warm cereals, protein drinks, jello/ Popsicles and plain yogurt. It's very boring but I've come to realize I don't need tht much food to function. What's the sugar buster diet?

Hi all! I'm on day three of my pre op diet. Surgery is the 30th!

Well I have found the past week and a half incredibly difficult. I have not been able to stop thinking about food. I feel like an addict trying, and failing, to detox. I have cheated every day except today! I just couldn't get control of myself. I didn't realise just how much pleasure I got from food and eating. I felt like my best friend had been taken from me never to be seen again! I know this is irrational but the 'need' to eat was so overpowering I just gave in. I truely admire people with will power! Luckily I seem to have gotten over this difficult time and I haven't cheated, or wanted to cheat, at all today! YAY! It is such a relief! I can only put the sudden change of heart and mind down to the support of my lovely boyfriend and the lapband site. I had been avoiding it during my 'cheating' stage as I think I just didn't want to NOT cheat. If that makes sense. I finally got back on it today and I'm really pleased I did. It is very supportive and I just feel so much better and sort of 'at peace' with the diet now. Gosh, what a head case! I also weighed myself today and I'm really pleased that dispite my best efforts to sabatage my progress I have lost 2.6kg/5.72pounds. I'm really hoping I will have lost a bit more before my op. The last thing I want is for my surgeon to tell me I haven't done enough!! I have really tried, really struggled, and now I'm finally suceeding! MUST KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!!!!

Just Starting The Lap Band Journey
JustWatchMe replied to Makinchanges4me's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck and keep posting here. My experience was five days of pre-op Clear Liquids diet, followed by six, yes, six weeks of post op full liquid diet. Again, every doctor is different. Keep in mind, that when you hear the term "gas pains" here, they are not talking about abdominal digestive gas pains. People here are talking about a pain that is up in your left shoulder area, sometimes your neck, as I had. For me, it was relieved by someone karate chopping the back of my neck in rapid succession. They did this for me a few times a day. That, and much, much, much walking. Those will help the pain go away from the gas that is trapped inside your body cavity. Gas-X tablets did nothing for me, because it was not digestive gas. That said, I did not have enough pain to make me regret the surgery, by any means. I am extremely thrilled with my progress so far, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I am now 11 weeks post op, I have dropped 55 pounds since my pre op regimen until now, I can walk without pain, and the list goes on and on. In my opinion, the medical staff explains what it can, which are basically the medical procedures that they perform, and the presentations that come through their office. However, if you wish to get real life experiences, and advice, keep coming to this forum, because here is where you will hear the day to day questions and answers and experiences of real people living with the band. One last piece of advice from me. Alex Brecher, the founder of this website, wrote a book called The Big Book of the Lap-Band. Look for it on Amazon or anywhere. I actually saw and read that book before I found this site. It will give you so much helpful and detailed information. Welcome! -
I have decided to take the plunge and post after reading this great site for a few weeks! I was just wondering if anyone has had a hard time focusing since they got their surgery date? That might sound weird, but I'm a little over two weeks out and it's hard to get things done because I'm so preoccupied with this impending change! I'm excited and nervous, but I also feel like I should be able to get more done in my life outside of surgery. I have a big final on Monday (I'm finishing grad school) and I'm not as prepared as I should be. Anyone else having this issue?

I was nervous/excited/scared for a few days pre-op, but then I started pretending that it was just another day of the week and I didn't have surgery coming up. It worked for me! Right up till the wheeled me into the O.R. I woke up and asked, "Am I skinny yet?" -
Preop Newbie - Food Processers and Shakers & Preop Emotions
Mariew24 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I am on the journey to preparing for surgery. I've had dietician visits, psychiatrist visit and attended support groups. I will see the surgeon in a couple weeks and hope to set my surgery date for November 3rd, or somewhere around there. I am exploring food processers and small blenders etc for shakes and purees. What brands/types would you recommend? Also, I am extremely excited about the possibilities ahead of me and at the same time I am pretty anxious and nervious. How are you all managing your emotions as you lead up to surgery? Thanks, MarieW -
I'm 6 weeks out and my NUT said I was cleared for all foods. I have to say I feel horrible today. My stomach just feels sick and sour feeling... I got worried and started reading my notebook from Dr. And it says no raw veggies or beef til 3 months. -__- I had meat (pepperoni slices) and small baby carrots yesterday. I'm worried.

scared to remove 60% of my stomach forever.
zoftig replied to inmatchesout's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think most of us feel guilt and shame, but fact of the matter is that 95% of people who lose, gain it back...plus some. I finally realized I was not in that 5% so it was either make peace with my size or surgery, (which is the one thing shown to make inroads into battling obesity). Also, it's not like you get surgery and get to do whatever you want. Trust us there is still lots of work to do, but the sleeve is a tool making the motivation and work so much easier (I'm hoping, only one week out). You can still take pride afterwards in watching what you are eating. -
Hi everyone! I am just starting my surgery journey and need all the help I can get. I've gained and lost the 160 lb monster that's attached to me so many times it's insane. However, now with the threat of needing new hips it's just time for "her" to die. I have certain health problems but managed to dodge diabetes and cholesterol issues. I have high BP, now the hip thing, and sleep apnea. I am fairly active still for 330lbs doing hair about 50 hrs a week. I've been as high as 400lbz and as low as 189 in the past 10 years. I'm at the end of my rope. I need advice on how to get insurance to help pay. I have. BCBS of Louisiana. Has anyone here hD success with them? Any help is sincerely appreciated.
