    I’m ready

Welcome and Congrats on deciding to take control of your life with WLS. I went with the Bypass because, having been banded back in 2011, my surgeon (the same one that installed the band) would not do a revision to sleeve due to increased potential issues at the staple line. To tell or not to tell, that's a hot debate and it's a very personal one. I told a LOT of people, once it was official. I figured I'd control the narrative and not allow rumors to spread. So for me, by taking control of the conversation, I was able to prevent any negative issues from popping up. What you do, is going to be 100% up to you. There are LOTS of people that don't tell anyone anything. Me, I didn't see an issue with broadcasting my WLS. Fear, if you didn't have fear I'd worry you weren't human. For me, even up until I was put under, I had some fears. But, I resigned myself to the understanding that, if I didn't do anything, I would end up dying much sooner than later. I trust my surgeon and surgical team enough that I knew they would do what was best for my health and my life. I had to do 6 months of check-ins as well... even with the band in place. It sucked, but it didn't detract from my goals, outside of putting me behind the ball with my dream goal of being the same weight I was when I was 20, when I turn 40 this November. Could still happen, 58 lbs to go and only 157 days to do that in! Seems like you've got a good understanding of everything a head of you, good luck!
  2. Hi the more I read on this site the more excited I get about getting a revision from band to RNY and finally getting this weight off for the first time in my life. I’m 55 years old though. 5 foot 2 in and 240. If I lose 80 pounds or more at this age will I still look fat with all this hanging skin? Maybe I shouldn’t be worried about something so trivial?
  3. I am a sleeve to bypass revision. When I had my sleeve I went from 260 to 220 within 6 months. I followed my program to a tee. I then developed extreme GERD. At the time I had no idea what it was but it got so bad that about 2 years ago I was burping up water and feeling gross from the GERD that I asked for a revision and got it almost a month ago. i honestly don’t know why I regained my weight back. No one knew I had the sleeve but everyone knew me as the dieter: I did Atkins, Keto, you name it. You would think I would feel full from Keto cause of the heavy protein, but nope. I felt no restriction. But I felt myself slowly losing the restriction as time went on. I had my sleeve for 7 years before revising. I have also seen where some sleevers develop GERD and the only food that seems to settle is the bad food. That didn’t happen for me but I have read it on some forums.

Scared by doc will say no

If you need to make sure you add that "Family History" line to your reasoning/justification speech. I wouldn't expect them to deny you, but I can empathize with the fear, I had my revision denied at first by my insurance for some bogus reasons... took me 6 months longer than it should to finally get my surgery approved. Fingers crossed for you!
  5. I was on a two week liquid diet when I had my revision to bypass, so I am sure my team thought that was more than enough. when I had my sleeve, I was told to take the magnesium citrate I believe. I have also taken the magnesium citrate for my other abdominal surgeries to make sure my bowels weren’t full so they didn’t get in the way of the surgical procedure
  6. Back in 2011, I saw that bypass patients were being given meds to flush their systems prior to surgery, so I was surprised when I didn't have to do that for my revision to bypass. Things change, if your surgeon / surgical team doesn't require it, I'm sure there is a reason, more than likely the flush wasn't necessary and simply doing liquids for a while before hand was enough. I'd suggest not doing anything on your own without talking to your team. If you end up doing the wrong thing or taking the wrong thing... you *could* end up having your surgery canceled or delayed. Might not happen, but do you really want to risk it?
  7. My surgeon advanced my diet to soft mushies on day 10 post op. He also told me that after one month I have no restrictions which was surprising to me. I had a revision from sleeve to bypass on 5/22/2018 and I pretty much feel back to normal. I have to remind myself that my stomach is still healing and I can't eat certain things. The good thing is that I do not feel hungry at all. When I was sleeved I often felt hungry, plus I always had small snacks due to the severe reflux. I found that when I had something small in my stomach the reflux was not as severe. Well I have been reflux and pain free since surgery and as I mentioned, I am not hungry.

    Revision

Welcome! Hope everything pans out well for you with the revision!
  9. Well hello, I had the Roux en Y back in 2009. Yes almost 10 years ago. Well we moved from where I initially had my surgery and finding a dr to cover me was hard and i hit many bumps in road. I initially only lost 70lbs before I hate years of same weight. Then I was blessed with twins in 2014 and gained a lot of weight. Then I couldn’t lose it. Well I started trying to lost weight again and failing every time. I saw a doctor and he really listened to my issues and that I never felt full. He decided to do an endoscopy and found my connections in my pouch were way to big. So after a small fight with insurance company I was able to get a revision done on May 25, where my awesome dr went I. And fixed all my issues. I am hoping this was the fix I need to help me start Losing yet again. Thanks. Nice to meet ya Jolyn

Perspectives on Losing Fast & Slow

Thank you for sharing that. That's really helpful. I don't have my surgery date yet but I'm in the last leg of my approval process and i know my process will be a long road too. When i attended the class for the RNY surgery i felt uncomfortable just because i felt others were wondering why are you here. I am a revision patient due to GERD and the damage it's caused internally. I need to lose at least 90lbs and to me that's a significant amount. But to others not so much. So i fully understand that we all have different journeys. I guess the important thing is to know your journey, don't get discourage when others lose weight at a faster pace than us and celebrate each accomplishment. GALS who started their journey over 300 lb+<br /> +

Hi everyone! I started at 332-336lbs before preop. I lost 20+lbs before the preop diet actually gained weight with the preop diet. At the time of surgery I weighted 311 or 314. Anesthesia memory! I was sleeved on May 22. I now weigh 295.2 lbs. my lowest weight drop has been .2 lb but hey it’s still a drop. My energy level is still in the toilet. I had a revision from the band to the sleeve. I lost weight fast with the band at the beginning but having the band slowed my metabolism incredibly low. I am working with a doctor to speed it up and not let the sleeve to the same thing. Most of my co workers noticed my 20+lbs weight loss. My mom who lives in another state did not. I have also had people comment about my weight loss since the surgery. I am smaller at the top and large at the bottom and when I lose weight it always starts at the top. Good luck everyone!!!!
  13. I had sleeve and the bypass (revision after 7 years) and I felt there was no difference in the recovery process. I felt about the same but experienced less gas pain with bypass. So neither one was easier in my opinion
  14. @Greyfaery For me, the decision was advised by my surgeon, she installed the Lap Band for me back in 2011 and when I discussed revision, she refused to do the sleeve on previously banded folks due to increased staple line complications. The sleeve has issues with reflux, and yes, you can *TOTALLY* "eat around" the sleeve, high sugar, high fat "sliders" are a real issue. Recovery between the sleeve and the bypass isn't that much different. In fact, the post-op process for the sleeve is actually harder than the bypass. Bypass patients are eating pureed food before they leave the hospital, sleeve patients are on liquids for a month afterwards. I've had the band, and now the bypass. The band and the sleeve are pretty much the same idea for surgery, restriction only. And both can be "eaten around", neither have any negative reinforcement / punishments for eating badly. So, once you start realizing you can get away with things you probably shouldn't be eating, there really isn't anything physically stopping you from doing so. Having healed both the band and the bypass now, I can say without any doubt that I really didn't notice a difference between the 2, if anything, the bypass was easier to heal, now that could have been because I knew what the process was like, or because I was thinner, but it was just easier. I'm *VERY* glad I went with the bypass this time around and not just another restriction only surgery. In fact, sitting here now, I truly wish I went with the bypass the first time I had WLS... And not after years of failing with the band. Either way, whichever you chose, understand it's ONLY a tool and will require lots of hard work and behavior modification, you *WILL* need to change everything about how you eat, your subconscious relation with food, any stress or comfort triggered eating habits will need to be adjusted or dealt with, for me, the bypass adds that extra layer of support, I can chose to eat a piece of cake if I truly wanted to, but I know it's going to really suck badly for a few hours or more if I do, so I really tend to not even risk it anymore. There are plenty of other things I can eat that are super tasty and good for me to chose from, it's harder when going out, but it's more than worth the added struggle! Good Luck in your choice!

    Biggest challenge in your journey

I'm on dexilant, carafate, zantac, and prevacid (OTC) and still have chronic reflux. I sleep sitting straight up. No alcohol, tobacco, spicy/greasy foods, caffeine, carbonation, etc. Currently waiting for revision to bypass
  18. so 10 weeks post op and I'm still wearing the same bras I did before my lift, they just fit better. However, I am going to need a revision of the lift, so with a second lift I would imagine that it is probable I will lose another size.
  19. Hi All, I'm new to this site. I was banded in 2008 at 220 pounds (5 feet, 2 in) and did not have much weight loss success. Then got terrible acid reflux and had to have it all unfilled. Gained weight and am now 30 pounds more than when I got banded. Now I'm considering a revision from the Band to Bypass. My surgeon advises me to get the Bypass due to issues with reflux with the sleeve. I am reasonably comfortable with the bypass except that I have a mesh inside of me from a previous hernia repair. The surgeon doesn't seem too concerned about it because the incision is below the belly button. Still I'm a little nervous. What if he can't do the bypass and I end up with the sleeve? How bad can the acid reflux get with the sleeve? Is it relieved by Nexium? Since he's not too concerned, should I just go with it? He's very experienced. Also, how have other peoples' revisions from band to bypass gone? Are you happy you did it?

    Kratom, anyone?

Hello Marci, I don't have much advice to give you, except maybe try different things with the Kratom powder.... powerade zero? Crystal Light? Hmmmm.....maybe different 0 cal drinks. I definitely know what you are talking about with the pills, you won't be able to take them after the bypass. Your post caught my eye.... had never heard of Kratom before, and I am going to look into it for myself. It may not be right for me, but I am always interested in safer alternatives than the meds I am currently taking. I am on 1800 mg of Gabapentin for nerve pain, and it works some. I do not want to go up on my current dosage. I've been on the Gabapentin for about 8 months. In addition to that, I have been taking the maximium daily dosage of tramadol for over 3 years. YUCK. Also, I want to tell you that I had my revision because of major probs with GERD. Couldn't eat solid food without severe pain.... so I had been doing pureed soups since February, and towards the end (right before my revision), even those were giving me pain. I had my revision on Tues, the 29th. My doctor cleared me for "mushies" on day 5. Had my first scrambled egg yesterday morning.... lo and behold..... NO PAIN! Wow! I couldn't be happier with getting the revision done, even though I am only a week out. Things are finally looking up. I had met my goal weight prior to getting the bypass surgery. I am in the 150's, so not far off from you. I hope your revision goes well. I imagine that it will really help you a lot. Sorry that I can't be of much help with how to take the Kratom.

I'm back again after a few years

Congrats on having a band that still works! I had to revise to RNY due to mine just not working any longer.
  22. Banded in 2011, revised to RNY March 21st 2018, wish I had done so sooner and glad I didn't revise from the Band to the Sleeve.

    Thinking of Revision Surgery

@Bryn910 Thank you for your response. But I am looking for revision of Sleeve, I mean I was thinking of getting done sleeve again as I feel my stomach pouch is almost back to its normal size. However you don’t worry, I am sure you will get you desired results. All The Best!
  24. @Kimber628I just had my revision to bypass because of awful GERD as well. One week ago tomorrow..... surgeon has cleared me for "mushies" already, today was my first time in 5 months to be able to "eat" something that wasn't a full liquid without severe pain caused by GERD (and hiatal hernia). Looking forward to my life again. Sounds dramatic, but pretty true. I hope you get awesome results/relief from the GERD probs as well.
  25. Yes! I just had yet... another scope, (my 14th. in less than 6 yrs.) due to urping, puking my food and constant nausea. My Dr. expected to stretch a stricture again and to take a peek at my ulcer... possibly schedule for a joint revision... (re-do surgery.) Ulcer has healed, no strictures... BUT I now have an, "extended, candy cane limb." So I'll be having a barium swallow, (again!) soon so he can decide if that's causing my nausea, small food consumption, puking and urping. So I guess it's likely for a surgical procedure for that as well. Geeze!
