  1. Be mindful that all bariatric surgeons aren't skilled in every type of bariatric surgery. There are surgeons out there that will discourage you from having a surgery that they don't perform. I would try to find a surgeon that is skilled in both surgeries so that you can get an unbiased assessment of the best surgery for you.
  2. I've heard elsewhere that some insurance companies do not require the 6 month supervised diet if you go to a bariatric center of excellence. Does anyone know anything about this? I have BCBS of Tx- TRS Active Care (teacher insurance). I do know that they have centers of excellence, but I don't know if this applies. I call them almost every day with more questions. I just thought I'd put it out here and see if anyone knew anything.

    Kaiser in MD

Have your friend call the bariatric department at Kaiser. That's what I did in northern California because I got so tired of all the different information.

    surgery/weight loss books

I found some titles on Amazon: The Emotional First Aid Kit: A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery (ordering this) recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You (this one too) WLS for Dummy's (I have heard great things about this)
  6. I am in my 5th month before surgery( hopefully) and have lost 12 pounds. I am try tall and original weight of 262 pounds. My bariatric doctor told me that my weight loss goal pre-surgery was minimum of 5% my original weight. Which is about 14 pounds. My primary has been behind all his requirements. Only suggestion was more water and exercising, preferably walking. I was also told that the liquid pre-op diet can make you lose up to 10 pounds. The main goal I was told was to set up your routine and learn better habits. And shrink your liver for surgery. Long story short, PvP needs to be more supportive or replaced. Just saying. Sent from my VS501 using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. Here are the ones I use, from the Bariatric Pal store itself: https://store.bariatricpal.com/collections/soft-chew-bariatric-vitamins/products/bariatric-advantage-multivitamin-chewy-bites-flavors I like the strawberry/watermelon flavor.

Need letter from Primary Care doctor, and I don't have one

Why won't you OB/GYN write the letter? My endocrinologist wrote mine but honestly I see him more than PCP. Cigna approved right away (thank goodness). Otherwise I would consider setting up a physical with a new PCP. Would agree getting a recommendation from your bariatric surgeon is a good idea.

    Waiting for insurance to approve!?

My file was sent to the insurance company Sept. 5th. I actually just called my insurance company this morning and was on hold for 30 min. I got tired of waiting and hung up. I'll probably try again this afternoon. The bariatric nurse said that my file goes to the hospital before the insurance company and I should expect to wait 4-6 weeks. I purposely put myself in a lower income bracket so that I could obtain insurance that would cover this surgery. Not only is the pre-op process hard, but so is learning to live on such a low income now. I even have to wait another 4-6 weeks after insurance approval for something called "chart review". They have had the past 8 months to review my chart, so I have no idea what this last phase in the waiting game is all about. Like you, I'm getting anxious with all this waiting around. I decided last week that maybe this is a good time as any to put my weight loss efforts in triple gear (without surgery). Good luck on your mission!
  13. Friday I will meet with the nurse clinician, have blood drawn, EKG MMPI etc. I am excited and apprehensive at the same time. Bariatrics at the clinic/hospital I go to have started doing lapband in 1 day surgery (you go home same day). Has anyone out there had this experience and would you recommend it? Also, I am a RN in a very busy unit. Can you give me guidelines on when I could anticipate returning to work. It can be a physically and mentally demanding job. Thanks:unsure:

    Self Pay

Phillip- You need to call your insurance company. Speak to a supervisor if you have to. I have bariatric coverage on my policy. However, the benefits aren't very good so I too am doing cash pay. Because baratric surgery isn't an excluded condition, complications would be covered. If your policy has a bariatric exclusion, it could only exclude the surgery itself or it could exclude the surgery itself and and resulting complications. Best of luck to you!

Lisa Lampanelli On Inside Edition Rant!

I think most people just don't know the difference between gastric bypass and gastric sleeve. I feel like most of the world thinks bariatric surgery is a big huge terrible horrifying thing you do to lose weight because you give up. People are just not informed and even the media screws up the message. Ugh!
  16. has anyone had to deal with the whole sexual harrassment issue at work. a man from the uppermost management has made it perfectly clear that he would like to ADVANCE my career....... he stopped by my office last nite. after hours for him...... came on so strong, telling me how smart and sexy i am. blah blah blah. i was so uncomfortable. im not sure how to respond. i have a good job and he is really popular. no one would believe me if i said he was coming on to me. i cant believe that im the first women he has done this too. i dont want any trouble or to even deal with this situation. im so tired of married old men coming on to me, but this one is my boss and he is very insistant........... i told him last nite that i wasnt interested in ADVANCING MY CAREER. he said he would give me more time to think about it. i am worried about retaliation. i already had trouble before with a coworker and he doesnt work here anymore. i did not report him but people saw how he was treating me and the did not renew his contract. so i got lucky that time. but now im freaking out. i dont need this now . i have too much on my plate already. i keep thinking " what am i doing to deserve this" i dont dress sexy at work. i wear scrubs. i dont flirt with men at work. so why me. im not weak or passive......... anyone else have to deal with this.........
  17. Kinda new to this forum. My surg date is Feb 27 also. A little nervous as I have no family living near me, they are all about 1300 miles away. Have 2 good friends who will be looking in on me once I get home. The hospital I will be at is 40 miles from my home because that is where my Dr practices as he runs the Bariatric Division at that hospital. My friends are going to drive me there and back. I purposely selected this particular Dr. because of his experience and that particular hospital is one of excellence. I have been on the Pre-Surg for 9 days and just weighed myself for the first time. I actually lost 10 pounds. I was thrilled. I plan to return to this forum and swap info, recipes that help, etc. I was always height/weight proportionate until I was injured in a fall Oct 21, 1998 (I'll never forget that date) but now have gained more than I am comfortable with and now I have Osteoarthritis which has resulted in the need for a hip and knee replacement, and back surgery may also be needed later if the hip and knee surgery doesn't help enough. My goal is to lose 100 lbs. Impossible for me to work out because of the hip, knee and back pain, but they just repaired our pool where I live (it's been down) but once my incisions heal, I plan to make good use of it.

    B12 supplementation

Laura-ven is right in her statement about the B12 being more of a necessity in gastric bypass patients. There is a certain part of our stomach that absorbs the Vitamin, and having a lot of our stomach removed can make it possible for us to become deficient in B12. sublingual B12 bypasses the stomach absorption and gets absorbed directly into the bloodstream, which is why we are prescribed that kind, specifically. I've heard of many bariatric patients that do not maintain an ideal diet with a variety of foods, and become dependent on daily Vitamins. At the same time, I myself have a much healthier diet now than I ever did before, and only take vitamins as a precaution. The last time I had my labs done, my B12 was higher than necessary, so I cut down my tablet to twice a week. Long story short, it is out of the norm that you were not prescribed B12. If your labs look good, however, no worries! Yay for you!

    Take 2

I have had to wait almost a year, due to having a stent put in last August. I was put on a blood thinner called Plavix for a year. My doc at that point asked me if I had ever considered weight loss surgery and I said I had thought about it, but figured it would be too costly for me. She told me that it wouldn't be as much as I had imagined due to my Insurance paying most of it. I got interested and said I would like to hear more. She put me in touch with the Bariatric Dept at Kaiser South San Francisco, and I went to a couple of meetings which I enjoyed. Cut a long story short, I started my 1,000 calorie diet last January. I have always been a very slow loser and had told my surgeon this. He wanted me to lose 25lbs by August, when I would be able to come off my Plavix tablet and be considered for my bypass. So, a date was set two weeks ago for me to have my surgery on 9/22/17 and today I went to see the Dr for my pre-op appointment. I have lost 34lbs and he is delighted. I am so eager to start this next part of my journey. I am fully motivated, and raring to go. The waiting for a year has not been easy, but believe me, it will come around faster than you might think. It's just a mindset thing, and once you realize you have to wait, (in your case 90 days), it's not going to be do hard. The best advice I can give you is....during this year I have exercised more than I have my entire life. Gym 3 times a week, I bought a bicycle and can go with my husband on short bike rides now, and can now walk 2-3 miles pretty easily. Back in January, when I started this program, I couldn't walk 1/2 mile. Good luck Erin...I hope my message helps you.

    Lost all motivation

I'm so sorry that happened. And I know how much hurtful words from your spouse can really shake one at their core. Could you find a marriage counselor who does online video calls? I think therapy is the only viable option to get to the root of what's going on. Or maybe a bariatric surgery support group for partners. Someone had mentioned that he may feel threatened by your weight loss. That is not an uncommon problem; especially if the partner is insecure. Maybe try to build up his security. Men normally respond to verbal praise. For example, in the first few weeks after my surgery, my husband was a very grumpy person to be around. When I commented on it, he blew up and said how overwhelmed he felt with work, taking care of a large portion of the home responsibilities, that it's been all about me and my recovery, and a few other things. I took some time to process, and in the right timing, I thanked him for all he's doing and told him that it did not go unnoticed. I reassured him and built him back up. Since then, things have been going really well. Your therapist may have some other ideas.

    Band Date July 5th! Hooray!

Yes it was BCBS I had. BCBS covers the surgery it depends on what coverage employers select. My employer did not select Bariatrics under their plan.

    Meal Replacements

I've tried both the Strawberry and Chocolate Bariatric Advantage Protein Shakes and really like them. Pre-op I used a blender, added ice and they were delicious! I'm only 3 days post-op so today I tried my first one, not blended. Not as good as that big frothy drink from the blender but I know I wouldn't be able to drink it all now. It took me over an hour to finish the 6 oz version.
