  1. I had a problem with insomnia early on. I found that if I had a high-protein dairy snack before I went to bed, then I could sleep. Try cottage cheese or Greek yogurt. Something easy to digest. Also, don't exercise before bedtime. And take Calcium and magnesium before bed. They help make you sleepy. Take multi- Vitamin early in the day. If none of that works, call your primary care physician.

    Stomach stretching

Everyone is different. I'm 8 months out and I can't even consume an 80 calorie container of yogurt in one sitting. I do find if you are questioning yourself, you are probably doing that for a specific reason. Just ask your surgeon. He knows you the very best. On a side note I'm not about removing all food options from our diet. It's about being smart and mindful.

    My hair-OMG! Help

I take 5,000 mg of Biotin per day. I get it at Trader Joe's (don't know if they have stores all over the country). It helps, but I'm not certain that it helps with the reason we lose hair with WLS. So far, at about 8 weeks out, I haven't noticed any hair loss. Like you, my hair is already very fine, and I don't have an abundance of it. I can't AFFORD to lose any!! So far, so good. But I DO get in all of my Protein, and I keep my calories to 1,000/day. I think not letting calories drop below this number helps a great deal. Donna - are you eating protein rich foods at every meal? Then, maybe some Greek yogurt for a snack? I also hate the Protein shakes, and now most days I'm able to get in a good 70-80 grams of protein with real food. One of my favorite lunches is 1/2 can of Kirkland tuna (from Costco), made with Hellman's lowfat mayo. The tuna is 24 grams of protein, and is GREAT with the low fat mayo; VERY satisfying. Greek yogurt is another 13 grams of protein (I eat some most every day), and adding in some sort of meat/chicken/fish for dinner, and eggs for Breakfast.....I'm there! If you're having a difficult time meeting your protein requirements from food alone, are you using up a lot of calories with low protein carbs? The good news (if there is any) about WLS related hair loss, is that it grows back (so I hear). I hope that I don't go through it. I have a hair appointment on Friday, and my hairdresser will tell me if she sees thinning.
  4. I'm 3 weeks out and worried to, even told my surgeon I think he made my pouch too big. He just laughed, and said I should be happy my recovery is so easy. I can finish 24 oz of water in less than 30 minutes, 8 oz protein shake in 15 minutes and have no trouble eating my 1/2 cup of yogurt. Was told to try soft meats so had 4oz of tilapia and 1/4 cup of mashed cauliflower and no full feeling. Not ever hungry but when I'm supposed to eat I do and have no trouble doing it. Not sure if it's because I have carefully measured and not put more on my plate than instructed. Time will tell but so far down 30 lbs including 2 week preop so hopefully the nerves in my new stomach will wake up and provide that stop switch I never had before. Also going to try that slow eating ap, cuz I eat fast and still can do that with the sleeve
  5. I am 4 weeks and 4 days post surgery and I am also in the group that can eat more than the 1/4 cup of mushy food I should have per meal for certain items. From day one on the full liquids I was allowed yogurt (without any fruit in it) and I could eat the entire 6oz container. I could eat 4oz of cottage cheese or applesauce at a time as soon as progressed to mushy. However, meat definitely has a limit of about the 2 tablespoons they advised for the mushy phase. I have to admit I never puree anything, so it is chopped finely and has broth, gravy or salsa on it to help it go down and I chew each bite for a long time. Perhaps if I did puree it would go down easier. I had some issues in the first week or two with consuming all the Water on top of the two Protein shakes, but that is over. No issues with liquids at all. I have also been worried that my sleeve will not provide the restriction I need. Over the last 10 days I have experienced hunger most days. This is more of a problem when I am at work. I don't get as much sleep as I did before returning to work and I am still trying to figure out how to time my meals, shakes and water to avoid hunger.

    Any May Sleevers?

Hi Jen, sorry to hear you've been having pain. I didn't have a belly button incision. I have 5, 2 on the sides about an inch higher than my Belly button, then two higher than those and one right between the boobs just below where my bra hits. We move on to purée weeks 3 and 4. Week 1 is all liquid, and week two you can add yogurt, ricotta, and pudding. I been doling the ricotta watered down a bit with water and then added a tiny bit of protein powder for flavor. Found some Delish ones and have 6 flavors to choose from, which has been really nice. Im almost worried how easy it is to drink. I can take three regular swallows without any real trouble. I have my f/u tomorrow and will ask if that's ok. My one issue has really been constipation. I feel fine, but I know I'm not supposed to go 4 days without so I took some Milk of Magnesia today, which I hate. As for hunger, yes!!!! I've been feeling hunger pangs since day 2. I'm on omeprazole so it isn't acid. I've been taking some of the anti spasm meds, which helps a bit, it it definitely feels like good old fashioned hunger. Kind of a bummer.
  7. It depends what is on your plan right now. You can mix Protein powder with greek yogurt, sf pudding, Soup (not too hot), mashed potatoes (if allowed), etc. I'm on mushy foods and added it to roasted butternut squash (puree). I'm allowed veggies and fruit on my plan - but it's not as low carb as some want to be.
  8. Yes, I can see the calories adding up with fancy shakes lol Mine are 192 calories each because I use 1% milk to mix them, so 1/2 of my daily calories are coming from shakes at this point. It's all I can do ... I get the other 300-400 calories with fish/seafood of some sort and maybe some cheese & yogurt ...

    Vegetarians(or Vegans!)

I'm not a vegetarian but I do have some meatless ideas for you. I enjoy a lot of yogurt and cottage cheese. I find Oikos Triple Zero gives you the best high protein/high fiber/low sugar option. My favorite way to prepare cottage cheese is with toasted walnuts and a drizzle of honey. For meals I have a fiesta black bean quinoa salad that my husband and I just love. (I'll post a link for the recipe) I also like to make wraps with hummus and black beans, spinach leaves and red pepper slices. Egg salad would also be a good idea especially if you are still early in pureed/soft stages. So would lentil soup. https://www.crunchycreamysweet.com/roasted-sweet-potato-black-bean-quinoa-salad-recipe/ https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/lemony-lentil-soup/

    Help!!

My sister who was banded last summer was hungry from the get-go and couldn't wait to get her first fill. I knew from the forum that most do not feel restriction. I think I'm blessed like Jack. I really don't feel hungry (even when my tummy growls sometimes). Last night was the first I felt tempted, but I think it was only because I was tired of the sweet stuff like Jello, popcicles, yogurt. Took care of that by making a little beef/mushroom broth. Hit the spot and took care of that craving. I was also told to watch it with things like cream Soups and puddings as they are so high calorie. Congrats Jack on doing so well. Don't think I'll hit 20 by New Years, but maybe 15? another member of the 12/21 possee
  11. If chicken makes you PB - stick to beef, pork or fish - or try the dark moist meat on a chicken - vs the stringier breast meat. Lots of people seem to have trouble with poultry - including chicken & turkey. That whole slowing down and taking tiny bites is the whole key to band success... There are a couple of things to keep in mind. 1) When you PB or get food stuck, you need to go on liquids for at least 24 hours after that time - to allow the swelling & irritation in your esophagus to go down. If you DON'T go on liquids - the next food you eat has to get past not only your tight band, but additional swelling - which makes it more likely that you will have the same problem again and again. 2) If, after taking tiny bites and avoiding "problem" foods, you still are having trouble - go back and have your doc take .1 or .2 cc's out. If you aren't taking large bites - Yogurt should NOT cause you any problems. Use a baby spoon and wait for a few seconds between each bite. If there are chunky bits in the yogurt - be sure to chew those. I envy you your restriction! I have NEVER had restriction so tight that I couldn't eat anything. I almost wish that I couldn't eat bread anymore... almost. :] Good Luck and Happy Band Trails!

    How do you stay healthy?!?!

Thanks for the advice. I usually do try to mix it up but I was just giving her a generic run down of what I was having yesterday! I do mix turkey instead of chicken and tuna. But, for me, just so that I do eat Breakfast, I stick with the yogurt or eggs. Nothing else stays down. So, that I don't skip, I change flavors of the yogurt and Protein. That's all the variety I can take right now. Any other suggestions for a breakfast that will stay down or that will go down? Bars are a no go. oatmeal made me vomit before banding, I can only imagine now. I do work and need it to be quick as I'm on the road by 6:30 am.
  13. I was allowed purée from day 2. :-) BUT: not everything felt good and the portions were tiny. Yogurt usually works well. RNY 14 April 2017 SW: 295 lb / 134 kg GW: 187 lb / 85 kg (I'll see when I get there)

    Any May Sleevers?

Hi Jen! I was thinking of you. Monday is your big day. Tuesday is mine. im doing OK though it depends on when you ask. I've been sticking to things even though sometimes I just want to pig out on a pizza or something. I don't. I know why I'm doing this and that keeps me going. I got some new protein powder that I like a lot better and I think that helps too. Night time is the harderst when I don't have the distraction of work to help take my mind off the physical and head hunger. After work is always when I I would do my biggest eating so I need some new evening habits. Been walking the dog a lot more. It's great that we are going into better weather. I live in Buffalo and definitely get seasonal depression in the winter. I'm going to the store later today for my final pre-surgical shopping for some clear broth, yogurt, and Propel water (for some reason my doc likes that). A little house cleaning and laundry, pedicure, shave my legs (LOL), and then tomorrow I pick my step mom up from the airport (she's coming to help me out). I reread my special clear liquids only diet for Monday, got my magnesium citrate for the bowel prep, and just need to pack what I want to bring to the hospital. It's getting very real. I ended up taking Monday afternoon off once I Found out about the bowel prep. good luck. Please check in and let me know how you're doing.

    Protein Ideas?!?!?!

Have you tried making smoothies with Protein powder? I dont like it by its self but some skim milk, 1 scoop of body fortress vanilla and some frozen fruit. I put it in my magic bullet. I also eat Quaker oatmeal with cranberry and almonds that has a nice chunk of protein in it. Greek yogurt, Canteloupe with cottage cheese. Soft scrambled eggs. Tofu sauteed with some peppers and onions. You can buy sugar free syrups also and make protein smoothies. The possibilities are endless

The Big Fat Truth about Low Fat Foods

I think tracking is important, I do that too. I am just always getting mad about those foods. Yesterday, my husband brought a bag of "baked" chips. They had 10 calories less for a serving but a lot more ingredients than regular chips. Add to that they don't even remotely taste as nice as normal chips - no good crunch, not as satisfying - and the calorie savings are really not worth mentioning. That said, I think it is perfectly fine to use less butter, use a cut of meat with less fat or use ground turkey instead of ground pork, but I think the problem starts when fat (sugar/carbs) are replaced with artificial stuff. I noticed from tracking, that I seem to not even get the recommended amount of fat even though I am eating 2% yogurt, drinking 2% milk and am cooking with olive oil...but I also don't want to eat a spoon full of Peanut Butter just to up the fat...but maybe I should? Or almond butter?
  17. 2nd day home I'm feeling pretty good! Gas started passing this morning when I woke up! Been walking around the house, walking outside, and only had to take pain meds twice! Having a hard time getting my fluids in also after I drink my tummy gets a little hurt... Tomorrow I start milk, yogurt, etc! Hopefully, I can tolerate it well.
  18. Hello Everyone on PREOP DIET..... My name is Yvette. WOW.....2 weeks? That is hard! I thought 7 days was hard for me! Well, This is day #4 for me and although I have not been perfect I've already lost 4 pounds. I'm excited about it and looking forward to my band on 12/30. I do want to mention for those of you who are curious as to what others are doing as far as what they eat or should I say drink. I'm not allowed any meals that aren't liquid. Breakfast - EAS Advantage Protein Drink or whey Protein shake, then a yogurt lunch - another protein shake, cream Soup, sometimes cream of chicken, tomato, or other cream based Soups, then I can have a Jello pudding. dinner - cream soup, then I can have jello, and if I want something later before bed and ice pop. I know it doesn't sound too exciting. Trust me, not having Christmas Eve dinner with my family (who is Cuban/Puerto Rican) was SUPER tough! I did survive though!!! Hope this gets better. Not having carbs is the hardest part for me!

    Whats for dinner tonight?

Gen, it went well! 2 small shrimp and a bite of the yogurt I was full and happy lol
  20. I think that's a great idea! You can have a closed group so no one outside the group can see what you are posting. I just had my second post-op visit with the doc yesterday. Everything is looking good. I'm a week and a half out from surgery and get to start mushies, i.e. mashed potatoes, hummus, Greek yogurt, etc. I feel really good. From the two-week liver shrink diet to now, I've lost 21 lbs.

    greek yogurt

I'm not a fan of Greek yogurt, but there are so many varietes now that I'd just go into a grocery store and look on the labels. Our local grocery has varieties I've never heard of.

    greek yogurt

I absolutely love Chobani's Pineapple flavor. It took me a while to get used to the texture of Greek yogurt, but now that I have, I enjoy it. I like all of the Chobani flavors and I also like the Fage brand.
  23. Someone help me!! My NUT won't allow me to eat a tablespoon of coconut oil to help me go..... I take 4 tablespoons Fiber daily, I take magnesium citrate, I drink 100-120oz Water a day, I eat two yogurts a day, I have 1oz fiber food a day with dinner (all my NUT allows at this point) and i liter had the mkst excruciating poop of my life. My pouch hurt for three days bc i couldn't poop and then I pooped a the biggest I have ever done....and now one day later I have more impacted Stool. I am trying fleet enemas and the nasty ole glove and finger but I can't take going through this again. The pain is horrific.
  24. Hello Team, I thought I was finally over the 4 days of massive runs. I did mostly Clear liquids on Wednesday and yesterday felt good. This morning I had a Chike Protein shake and it sent me straight back to the bathroom. The same thing happened this afternoon after a sugar free fudgesicle. Have any of you become lactose intolerant post op? Does it go away? How long until it does? Any suggestions on things to eat while on Full Liquids? I have another week on full and I don't want to get weak. I may try Greek Yogurt again tomorrow without any other dairy to see if stays in ok. I could live on Greek Yogurt but would love some variety. I haven't made Cream of Wheat or applesauce because I don't want the carbs. What would you do if you were me?
  25. you might take a lot of crap for asking this, but a lot more people do this than there are people willing to admit it. It's obviously not the best choice, but we are all just trying to live our lives and have some normalcy. I say be very careful. I have fro-yo about twice a month now but the very first time I had it the yogurt sat in my stomach like a brick and then I got pretty dizzy.
