    Do you still do 6 meals a day?

    I’m one of those that DIDN’T do 6 meals a day during weight loss phase (or after). I was a grazer (still am) as i just couldn’t eat alot at one sitting. I would fix myself something and eat it throughout the day (often over multiple days). I was also not (never was, still not) a breakfast eater. I normally have my first food of the day at noon. As time goes by, you will figure out what works for you, until it doesn’t anymore and then you’ll have to figure out a new MO. Good Luck! ❤️
  2. So did I, and i turned out just fine. I too was often lightheaded the first little bit, and went through a period of food aversion. From month 3 to 7, weight loss sowed down to roughly 10lbs a month (i was eating more, as well as getting smaller, reducing my need for calories) Lost another 10+ lbs after goal and been sitting there more or less ever since. Im 3 yrs out. I assume you have shared your lack of energy and other concerns with your doc and nut? And that your labs have come back with uneventful results? Unless your team is worried, probably no need for you to either. Good Luck! ❤️
  3. Sounds like you might have a stricture. This is something your surgeon needs to address. The top portion of your stomach may have developed scar tissue which is preventing these tougher proteins from passing into your pouch. Hopefully you have a weight loss clinic or a doctor monitoring you that can order an EGD to see if there's an issue. Good luck!

    This surgery is bullshit...

    You need to get into some counseling ASAP. Its pretty clear you have some unrealistic expectations of what WLS was and how it would work, and you also might need some support on how to manage your new life and adjust post-op. I'm sorry this has been so disappointing and frustrating for you, but as others have said, weight loss surgery is a tool not a magic wand. You absolutely can overeat if you want to, it just makes it harder. But if you aren't tracking what/how much you're eating, how do you know if you're overeating? And exercise is good for you; sounds like you are really resistant to that, but the reality is you need to move your body regularly. Whether you are trying to lose weight or not, your body NEEDS it. Again, your feelings are valid, WLS is a massive life change. But some additional support for your emotional/mental health would probably be really helpful for you. You can't have the surgery and then refuse to comply with the post-op requirements and then be angry that surgery "isn't working" for you. It is, but YOU need to make it work. We are here to cheer you on, but you've got to do your part.
  5. I was sleeved Oct 2013 & lost 90lbs (gained back 20 lbs) but never got to goal weight or close. I really committed to changing my lifestyle; exercising (running & weight lifting) & used myfitness pal to log food. I felt great & looked great. Then, life unraveled. In 2016 found out my husband of 20yrs was cheating on me, I realized he was an alcoholic & we divorced, I was laid off from my job & then diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. My kids were 10 & 12 at the time & I had no family to help me (both parents deceased & brother lives 3hrs away by plane). I went through 9hr surgery to remove a foot of my colon & then 7 mos of chemo & steroids. I put on 60lbs during chemo & have not been able to lose it. I had a bad fall after last chemo treatment from neuropathy in feet. I have so much pain in my knees I can’t run. Don’t know if all due to excess weight, arthritis (I’m 54), chemo, menopause? I finished my ins requirements for a revision & scheduling revision to bypass is next. But, I am so hard on myself & questioning if it will work and if I shouldn’t be messing with my body especially surviving cancer? I have regained all my weight &depressed. I hate the way I look & struggle with trying to be happy I am alive after cancer. I have heard weight loss is slower after revision. Is that always the case? Anyone else have cancer after wls & regained and had revision? I feel lost. I miss the adrenaline I used to get from working out.
  6. Omg I wished you posted this before my surgery on 11/8. I did a week of liver shrinking diet and loss 15 lbs. Completed all the necessary procedures too and went to my surgery appointment. However….. I was on time but have been having second thoughts the night before and I even had a consultation with my therapist friend (free counseling session 😂) I spent at least 2 hours with my friend and talked about my reservations. She even advised me to cancel or reschedule because of my reservations. I had my consultation with my surgeon on 10/11 and the surgery date on 11/8 was offered. Off course I took it cos I’m overwhelmed but in reality I should have waited for more time but what’s my excuse? Food relationship and the holiday parties and meals. However, after getting my behavioral health evaluation and preop, I was ready. I was so happy with the result of the liver shrinking diet cos in my head look, I can do it without the surgery but I only did the diet because I have a goal date which is the surgery date. I even chatted with my parents about my decision. My dad didn’t want me to get the surgery but my mom was encouraging since she knows how many times I failed doing different diet and exercise program after program. So, day of surgery came. I checked in 30 minutes earlier and I was sent to pre-surgery department. My check in appointment was at 9:00 and surgery at 11:00. I changed to my hospital gown and got comfortable. It’s funny that every commercial was Taco Bell. However, each time I checked the clock I was panicking inside. My surgeon and his team was late and my surgery was pushed until 1:00 PM. In my head, it’s my chance to cancel it and the universe was telling me to cancel it. I wished I listened to the voice inside me but I’m glad I didn’t. I’m glad I did the surgery because I don’t trust myself and if I canceled, I will probably go back to my unhealthy lifestyle. Today is my day 21 post opt and I lose another 20 lbs. It’s totally life changing and tracking my intakes help. I found myself now drinking more water a day to stay hydrated and planning more my meals. I don’t see my surgery as an excuse for weight loss but a tool to help me get back to the healthy side.

    weight loss slows down a lot the further you go. Are you still following your program to a "T"? Measuring and logging your food? I didn't quit losing until I was 20 months out, but it was slow going after the first few months..

    This surgery is bullshit...

    I had a chat with my preop team about the LSG I had on 11/8. My preop provider says if patients are using the surgery as an excuse to lose weight faster, they will fail. It’s a process, a tool to help with weight loss. Even with my behavioral health evaluation for the surgery, I expressed that this is a tool for me and not a magic wand to lose weight in a blink of an eye. So far, I’m 20 lbs lighter after 21 days. My post opt week 4 starts tomorrow and it’s a learning process. I don’t count my calorie intake but I record all my intakes including water and clear liquids. I wish you the best of luck and maybe get a weight loss therapist.

    This surgery is bullshit...

    Yes. My surgeon is with a teaching hospital and indicated up front that research shows this is the best proven way to keep weight off long-term for people who have been unable to maintain weight loss in the past. I figured this is my best chance of success, if I follow their recommendations. My program did not recommend tracking calories, although that may work for some people.
  10. I have PCOS and had bariatric surgery 2nd september, from 125kg im now 98 and have just found out im pregnant! Any ladies on here experienced the same thing? ive had alot of sickness since my op and i think this has counteracted my contraception pill with everything else going on i didnt even think about that til i missed my period. Anyone got any good advice or stories? Im so terrified that its too soon. I lost a baby in 2019 but i was at my highest weight and unhealthy, surely the loss of 4 stone is a more positive situation to be in? Thanks Guys i dont know where else to turn 😭

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    Checking in. I will be 2 weeks post op tomorrow. On Wednesday my surgeon cleared me to start soft food. I have been eating fish that I grill and I have been using my Instapot to pressure cook some things. I am not interested in puréed. I can live on apple sauce and fish for a long time. Weight loss has stopped at 30 pounds in 3 weeks which I am fine with. I haven’t lost much post op but I lost so much Pre-op I am not surprised. The Dermabond is finally starting to come off my incisions. No problems so far tolerating food. I am slowing sampling different things. I am avoiding sugar. I so far have nothing but positives to say about my experience. For me this isn’t about a number on a scale. This is about my health and I already feel more energetic and am not longer using my CPAP.

    This surgery is bullshit...

    Sorry to hear things have been rough. Tracking calories does not work for me, I’ve learned from other eating plans that it makes me obsessive, and is not sustainable for me. Perhaps talking with a nutritionist about what you are eating each day might help? I follow the rules of 60 or more grams of protein each day, no added sugar, 5 g or less fat per serving, and eat until I am satisfied. No more. During the work week, I eat the same thing every day from breakfast until afternoon snack. Dinners are healthy and usually involve some form of chicken or turkey. I know this might not work for everyone, but it makes it easy for me and my weight loss has been great. Ultimately, each person is different, and what works for me and my program may not work best for you. I hope you find something that works for you, and allows you to use your new tool to the fullest!

    This surgery is bullshit...

    With all kindness, your doctor knows what to do. They are they experts. Follow their plan to a T. That is how you’ll lose the weight. I followed EXACTLY what my doctor told me to do 99% of the time. I’m over two years out, down 146 lbs, and easily maintaining my loss. I did it by developing new habits guided by my physician and her team.
  15. I had gastric sleeve surgery on July 21st. Over the first six weeks I lost 30lbs. I haven't lost a single pound since then..... My doctor keeps saying I need to keep my daily calorie intake to 800 or less to lose weight. I haven't been logging everything but I think I'm staying around that number... I'm not a very disciplined person so keeping track of that every day usually doesn't happen. I'm super frustrated and getting depressed over this. If I was able to lose weight by sticking to a very strict diet and exercise program I would have done that a long time ago and never had the surgery. I had a big part of my stomach removed for nothing.... Anybody else out there who can't lose weight even after weight loss surgery? I don't know what to do....

    Anyone for October 2020?

    Hi Orchidlover Hopefully by now you've figured out how to get and stay back on track. How was Thanksgiving for you? I am also struggling and stopped losing, as a matter of fact I've gained a few pounds. I was in a really bad car accident in July which caused me to be home and not doing any exercising other than physical therapy. I have now restarted as of last week doing a little walking. I actually pushed myself yesterday to do a little more than walk slowly and I felt OK. I have been home since my accident. Prior to the accident I was losing but very slowly, I mean extremely slow. I still took it as a win cuz at least I want gaining. We have to take all our victory laps regardless. I especially do this because, I have been and still am dealing with back issues and being on steroids all the time didn't help me. I also have not been eating right lately. I find myself ALWAYS hungry and always snacking and not always on healthy stuff that'll be conducive to weightloss. We know what we're doing wrong, we have the tools to do what's right but we are so much in our heads when we get off track, it blocks us from clearly seeing those said tools that'll help us to get back where we know we can abs want to be. Let's start today by not doing the things we have been doing lately, whether it's eating badly or not exercising and making excuses why we're doing these things. Once we put our minds to doing it we can. you've done it before to be able to lose 100 pounds.. which is a huge deal, congrats on that. I have only lost a total of 58 pounds and that's over two surgeries. I have had major setbacks but I'm not giving up and I'm going to stop letting those things get in the way of my success to get to a 100lb loss. Fight for this, you got it and you know how to.     Water and Protein Intake

    Yep, sipping all day long is the only way I could do it too. I used to dilute my protein shake to make it more palatable & for extra fluid. I’d sip on it for 3 or 4 hours. Same with the soup I’d eat. (Popped the soup in the microwave to reheat it as it cooled.) You’ll find it does get easier as you progress. And yes all liquids count to your fluid goal. Congrats on your loss so far.

    Acid Reflux or GERD post surgery

    I was told there's a 20% chance of getting GERD after surgery, worse than that if you already have it. But, I, for example, also have a hiatal hernia which can cause GERD. The plan is to fix the hernia, then that, plus weight loss, can possibly alleviate GERD. It's 6 one way, half a dozen the other. But I'm with you--it doesn't sound very likely there's a great outcome.

    Everything crossed for you this time LadyVan - six months is a long time to be ready and not taken - must have been so hard. I don't think it would do any harm to start it early - all the more loss and mentally it might help you feel you're getting things moving! Could you check with your nutritionist/dietician?

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    Hi everyone - how are you all getting along? I'm day 10 today - got my staples out so totally lost horror/goth status with my family. I am just starting thicker fluids - yoghurt, runny mousse type consistency - and it feels good. I have lost *no weight at all* since I came home on day 2 - hoping this is just some sort of adjustment because I really need to see a loss soon. Managing about 50g protein a day - maybe 60 yesterday. I did suck a tiny lump of cheese yesterday and I've never tasted anything as good. Pain is improving a little every day. I have my 2 week checkup next Wednesday and I hope to go back to work after that. I'm walking 1000 quick steps several times a day now. How is everyone else? Just jogging along?
  22. Someone asked about long-term complications in the elderly who had surgery decades ago. You can't really compare, because weight loss surgeries back in the 60s and 70s were very different than they are today. They were very risky and some people (including a former co-worker of mine) had them reversed - and some people died from them. But again, there's no comparison to the surgeries they do today. Plus the ones they do now are much safer and much less likely to have severe complications. you should be fine as long as you follow your plan, keep on top of your supplements, and have regular blood work done to check for deficiencies. Most deficiencies can be reversed if they're caught early. I do have osteoporosis, but I have no idea if that's due to my weight loss surgery or not, since we didn't do a baseline before my surgery. But I'm also in my 60s and osteoporosis runs rampant on both sides of my family, so it could have been that as well. I'm on a drug now that maintains bone, though - and there are other drugs that actually build bone. Honestly, at my starting weight (almost 400 lbs), I was much more concerned about complications from being severely obese (like premature death, for one) than I was about complications from my RNY.

You are right to have concerns & to ask questions about possible long term side effects as you should after any surgery or medication regime, etc. You should be fully informed before making any decision. The unfortunate thing today is that our chances for cancer, osteoporosis, etc. are Increasing regardless of having weight loss surgery or not. A combination of many factors including poor diet, genetics, lifestyle, environment all increase our chances for developing serious health issues as we age. Being obese increases our likelihood even more. Most of these we have no control over. You may have the surgery & develop an issue but you may have developed it without the surgery & vice versa. There are some things we can’t control or predict. As @Sunnyway said if you ensure you eat a balanced, nutritionally dense diet & follow the vitamin regime you are prescribed you will actively be working to avoid any possible side effects. I’d also suggest you continue to have regular blood tests to ensure you’re never lacking in anything & have bone density tests to check for early signs of osteoporosis. Make them a regular event to keep ahead of things just like having a regular Pap smear & your teeth checked. All the best.
  24. If you eat a well balanced diet and take the prescribed vitamins and minerals you should have no deficiency as you age. My plan calls for 1500 mg calcium citrate which protects from bone loss. It is important to take calcium citrate, not other forms of calcium. I had my RNY 30 years ago, and while it was not entirely successful (so I'm leading up to revision at age 73), the surgery had no long term negative effects on me. Indeed, I credit it for avoiding Type II Diabetes, which many of my overweight friends now have.
  25. It has been 5 months and I am so surprised at what a 5 months it has been. I have learned more about my body in the last few months that I ever knew in my previous 40+ years. I have learned the best foods for me, which ones keep me satisfied longer, which ones disagree with me and the ones that hinder weight loss. I am also learning how to leave food on my plate. Some things are easier to learn (portion sizes) while others are still an issue (remembering to eat slowly). I have lost 84.6 overall….61.4 pounds since surgery…. and a combined total of 46 inches. As of today I am also officially in the overweight category. I am off my blood pressure and cholesterol medicine and my thyroid meds have been reduced. My knees and back feel better and I have so much energy! I have a lot to be thankful for but today I am most thankful that my husband has taken over the thanksgiving meal duty! HW: 275 SW: 251.8 CW: 190.4 GW: 140
