    have gurgling in my esophagus

Now I gurgle all the time and today while on the phone with my nurse she heard it and said that it should not be normal after all. I was told that I need a UpperGI done and then I have to have some fill taken out becuase this is a part of being over filled which can lead to poor weight loss and other problems and I have had very poor weight loss since May of 2007 I ahve lost 103 pounds but that is it I am currently holding at 175 pounds and I look good too. I am toned and not a lot of excess skin hanging around me. I work out all the time. So now after all of this is done I should begin to lose more weight. I need to be at my goal of 145 pounds but will settle for 150.
  2. Hi-I've been reading the forum off and on but finally decided to join in. I'm almost completely new to the process, having only gone to a Mt. Carmel info sesssion earlier this year. No paperwork, but did inquire about it with my insurance carrier who told me no, no, no in no uncertain terms. I am still moving forward and building "the fund" just in case it's all on me. I just celebrated by 51st birthday and am weary of fighting the weight battle. My hubby had the bypass surgery several years ago in Cleveland and has had good success. Had I not been in denial I would have done something then as well, since our insurance carrier at the time was more agreeable. I want to have the lapband so am really interested in what people have to say about the surgery, the costs etc.. I am particularly interested in the docs at Mt. Carmel East. But am willing to consider other providers in Ohio. Thanks for this venue. It helps to know that I'm not alone.

    something that urks me

Maybe it just works better for some then it does for others? How can you judge until you have been there. I am disappointed so far and I have been trying hard. Some people lose oodles of weight on 1200-1500 calories. I maintain at that and need to go much lower more like 800-900 calories. I have always been like that all my life and it has been very frustrating. Everyone is different and has different problems.
  5. WOW, such good work!! I started the same weight as you and just had surgery sept 27th. I hope I will be as succesful as you have been. I am curious, have you followed the meal plan exactly as the surgeon gave you? Are there any things you have been doing that has made you so succesful?
  6. I had my first fill 2 weeks ago and i feel like i"m still eating more than i"m supposed to. I don't feel the weight coming off has this happened to anyone? I'm going for a 2nd fill in a week do you think it will be right then? worried...

    Lap Band Vs Gastric Bypass

I wanted to go the route of least invasive and least down time. I also thought that if there's a problem 5, 10, or 15 years down the line, they may have come out with another equally less invasive procedure to perform. I would really like to keep all of my anatomy. I also am young and plan on having a family someday, so it's important that I could still lose weight now, but have the possibility when pregnant to remove part of the saline to allow for adequate nutrition. I also considered the actual weight loss aspect. Although gastric usually loses more weight at a faster pace initially, there is a chance of regaining after 18 mths-2 years (when the body learns how to reabsorb) if you did not learn to eat properly. The band causes you to change your eating from the start and also requires less nutritional supplements.

Could my first fill be enough?

I am 2 years out, almost to my goal weight, have surgery scheduled later this month for a Tummy Tuck---and I have had 2 fills. Like you say, I could likely have done it quicker with more restriction, but I have not had any problems, and feel the spot I am at is ideal! At our seminar, he said there are very rarely people that never even need a fill! My band has eliminated my hunger----which is a godsend! I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!! Too many times, it seems an overtight band, and resulting unfill, lead to more of the same problems as time goes by. I am scared to have my fill removed for my TT. I am required to do so, and understand completely doing it, but I am scared I won't ever find this happy spot again. My Dr. is one who will not fill you more if you are losing weight, he feels being too tight is not healthy for the stomach. We got along well in that manner. He also only uses fluoro under request or if he has a problem locating of hitting a port. Never have needed it----we used it at a year out, and looked at my band---but that was a check up, not a fill. Keep up the good work!!! Kat

    a joke for you

Hi all - I have a joke for you. Having lost some weight, a middle-aged woman was admiring her "new" body in her full-length mirror. Seeing this, her husband said "What on earth are you doing?!". She told him "my doctor says I have the breasts of an 18 year old". Annoyed by this, the man then said "Well, what did he say about your 55 year-old ASS??!" To this the woman cooly replied "Your name never came up!" Have a great day! Robin
  10. If you're pushing yourself really hard at the gym, you're obviously going to need a few more calories to nourish the body. As long as you are eating healthy and within your ranges, you'll do great! Follow your NUTs advice. Currently on my full liquid diet, my NUT said any ranges my surgeon gave me I should be at the higher end (due to my structure), so for this phase it was listed 600-800 for me, so I'm trying to hit close to 800 calories a day. I found that hitting the gym everyday this week with 30 minutes of intense cardio actually slowed down my weight loss this week as I think I was pushing my body into starvation mode and i was getting those hunger pangs more in the evening this week then what I'm used too. As an example, I consumed 735 calories on Thursday, burned 630 from exercise in addition to what the body normally burns for the day and sets me up in a huge deficit. I'm going to reduce the intensity of the cardio for now until my calorie intake is back up to 1000-1200 and I think then I'll be okay. Everyone is different, so please don't use my numbers for yourself, as I'm just trying to explain whats been happening with me as it might shed some light on your own dilemma
  11. Hi Deedee, and welcome to the forum! The idea of loose, hanging skin is one that many of us fret over, and many of us have to deal with. Rapid weight loss (plus age, though I don't know how old you are) can be contributing factors to why skin loses its elasticity. I don't want to have to deal with it either, but some hanging skin is a much better alternative than a belly covered in a thick layer of fat! Many insurance companies don't cover the cost of cosmetic surgery, however, depending on your circumstances, it is possible to have skin removal covered if your doctor deems it medically necessary- for instance, if the folds of skin are causing a serious irritation and/or rash or infection that doesn't clear up. Not that I would wish that on anyone, just passing along some things I've learned. I'd also recommend keeping up with your exercise. Exercise is very important not only to helping the weight come off, but it can (depending on what you choose to do) help reduce the amount of loose skin you might have to deal with. Good luck to you!

Something to get me back on track...

Thanks for sharing! In Feb and March I gained 8 pounds because I wasn't be honest with myself. I had those same thoughts your are having in April and since lost 13 pounds once I realized that it was really up to me to track my calories and stop eating sweets too much. I still have some but in moderation and I add them in my calorie tracker for the day instead of leaving them out.
  13. Hang in there...we CAN do it. I am feeling like a total failure at the moment..but telling myself I didn't go through all this to not have it work...and I know that the biggest part of this working is ME with the help of my band. I need the right positive mental attitude coz I really don't want to fail at weight loss...yet again. I have not seen the good weight loss some of you have at 3 weeks out like me..but I am trying to stay positive and let this be a life changing experience. Some days its easier than others. You can message me anytime...I think you are doing awesome.

    What am I doing wrong?

I was almost the same, not quite as tight as you describe (no pbing but a bit of sliming) but I figured if I wasnt even losing any weight for my discomfort, why live with it? I had some out, could eat huge amounts, regained 4 lb and have worked my way back to the same restriction again which is nowhere NEAR as tight this time. I put up with it for about a month, there's really little to be gained by being too tight.

  17. Personally I think we all should be fearful, it is too easy to gain weight back, we all know this we all have done it before. I don't think you need counselling, just keep doing what you are doing and be fearful!!
  18. Just wondering if you had cellulite before weight loss, and if the cellulite dissappered after the weight loss:
  19. There are a lot of us in this forum who are around your age. I am 61. We all want the same thing....better health and a bigger bucket for our bucket list. It's all I can do now to walk through the drug store with a cane. I want to go to my ancient homeland of the Scotland, but won't be able to do it without losing weight. I am sure we all have goals that can't be realized in our present condition. If you feel you need the surgery, then go for it. We're all rooting for you.
  20. Hello all! This is a wonderful forum. So many questions answered and others popping up for me. I have Cigna insurance and I am not sure if it will be three or six months of prep but I am willing to jump through the hoops as long as I can see a VSG at the end of the tunnel. I am 57 year old female. I have struggled with anorexia and binge eating, both ends of the spectrum. I have been able to lose weight in the past, but have never been able to keep my weight down. The last five years, what worked for me before is no longer working and I get nowhere. Last year I saw a dietician for four months and lost three pounds and I exercised like a fiend. 90 minutes, five days a week. Three pounds in 16 weeks. It becomes very discouraging. And my company did not cover ANY weight loss services. Last year I hit rock bottom. This year I petitioned the CEO at my company and she immediately agreed that Bariatric surgery is something that a healthcare organization should offer as a benefit to its employees. Starting July 1 this benefit will be added to our coverage. So July 1 I am applying to start the process. Wish me luck! I will be here a lot looking for, and offering, encouragement, validation and support.

    Just Getting Started

Welcome to the forum KensingtonWalk and good luck with your journey. I think for many of us WLS is a last resort after many years of problems controlling weight. It's not a magic wand but it helps enormously if you have the determination to succeed. It's great that you've got funding now and can start the process.

After the storm there is a rainbow

Thanks When I did my sleep test 2 years ago I was pregnant at the time I gained a lot of weight, (past 300lbs) I snored a lot, my breathing was out of wack along with my asthma and the Dr wanted to make sure me and the baby were both ok because I would pause during my sleep. The weight had a lot to do with it, now since I am loosing my breathing has been better so I no longer use it.

    Food Diary Time

Since the day I was banded, I have been journaling. I do it the old fashioned way, with a pen and notebook. I write down what I ate, calories, grams of protien, what time I finished (helps for drinking and the 30 minute rule) and to gauge times between eating! I also mark Vitamins taking, cause I tend to forget, and minutes exercised! It really does keep everything in check, and becomes second nature after a while....if your working and don't really want people to know, just carry a small note pad in your purse, and transfer it when you get home. It really is a great way to keep track of your journey! I also write my beg. weight , todays weight, pounds lost, pounds to go, and goal. Good luck, and what ever way you do it, computer or notebook it will benifit you!
  24. 5 year weight history/approval question

I had to show all the diets I was on and the weight I was. I typed up a sheet and gave it to my doctor and she signed it. This was good enough for the insurance company. Rae
