    February 2020 Post-Op Thread

Great to hear from so many folks on here! I'm plugging along, I'm down a little over 50 pounds including the pre-surgery loss. I'm losing about a pound to 2 per week now. I've been walking a lot, and have started doing some more rigorous walks, although not anything that counts as "hiking"...My knees feel so much better, my stamina is up, my lung capacity is better. I try to make sure I get up and move for at least 5 to 10 minutes every hour, not so much for the calorie burn but to keep my metabolism up. It's been hard at times not to fall into grazing...We are home so much because of the pandemic, and at one point I was working from home 4 days a week. I try to keep hard boiled eggs, tuna or chicken salad ready in the fridge so if I need a snack I can have some protein. I also found I love sunflower butter, and a tablespoon of that with a half an apple, or some protein crackers is a great little snack for me. Frozen shrimp is also a new staple for me; I often have a salad with 6 shrimp for lunch, or make up a shrimp salad with reduced calorie mayo and lemon juice, red pepper, onions and celery. I am completely off the protein shakes, except I use Premier Cafe Latte in my coffee. I have a protein bar once or twice a week, but mostly because I like them. I eat between 800 and 1000 calories per day, which the nutritionist was happy with. Downsides: hair loss! Which is really bad right now, don't know why, maybe because I've lost enough weight to trigger it; Extra skin, especially on the upper arms, and boy head hunger is real. Also, I think the novelty is wearing off, I find myself thinking stupid things, like "I could eat just a quarter of the jelly donut" or "1 piece of pizza would be ok". So basically I am lusting after other people's food! I keep telling myself in maintenance I can try an indulgence once in awhile. I miss having a couple of drinks. My daughter is coming for a visit this Saturday, and we will socially distance out in the yard, and I would love to mix up some sangria (I make mine with rum and red wine....). Cucumber mint water will have to do! Stay well everyone! Nice to hear from folks!

    Going in wrong direction-Help

I started in 2010 with my sleeve. I was 54 years old. 320 pounds 5’2” - I got. To 175 at my lowest. I gained back 10 right away then another 40 in 10 years. Last summer I decided to lose 20 pounds in a year. I have lost 35. I am not even down to a normal weight by far - but I have gone from. Size plus 28 (at the start 10 years ago) to a 16 petite today. How ? Protein first. Lots of organic veggies, healthy fats, fruit. And some kind of “treat” everyday. I use complex carbs as “sprinkles” - if I am making baked potatoes for the family with dinner I might take a couple tablespoons and sprinkle it over my veggies. I do the same with pasta -chop it up and sprinkle on the veggies ! Life style changes. I garden and swim. No major exercising. And plan what I take to work. ( essential work in social services )

    Before and After Pics

It’s been 10 years .... I am healthier now and got more energy to spend with my children! With 5 kids ages from 28 to 9 is very exhausting but rewarding! Losing all the weight made me live longer for them. This is the best decision I have ever made in my life! To all of you who are in this journey.... congratulations! You are doing great!

    Going in wrong direction-Help

I will admit that I have not gone through this but some advice I hear from My Level 10 Life (youtuber) is to start today. Don't wait for tomorrow or Monday, start today. Drink half your body weight in water, start tracking your food, start building positive, everyday habits. She offers a free habit tracker you can use if you want, just find her on Youtube. I hope this is helpful and I wish you the best!
  8. HELP! I recently had gastric bypass, 6/16 to be exact. It's been 10 days and I have only lost 10 lbs [emoji35] is this normal? How much weight have you lost so far? Btw I had my 1st bowel-movement today for the first time since surgery, I feel like I should take magnesium citrate to get cleaned out..... but I'm just scared- I honestly don't want to make things worse.

    June Sleevers Post Op

Hey guys, I got sleeved on June 23rd. Whew its over. But honestly it wasn't too bad. Although, the gas pain was almost unbearable, it was in my chest, my back, my shoulders. Only way to relieve the gas was to walk. And boy did I walk, I looped the hospital halls like I was Flo Jo (in my mind). I only stayed one night in the hospital. I'm currently home trying to adjust to my new life. I'm on full liquids now. I have absolutely no appetite, I set my alarm when its time to eat. I am dealing with a bit of acid re flux or heart burn. Hopefully, this too shall subside. STATS: Total = I have lost 44lbs from my highest weight 8/31/2019 to current 2 week Pre op diet = 16lbs lost From surgery date to current = 8lbs. (two days)

    June Sleevers Post Op

My sleeve was 6/2. One night in hospital - no issues. 2 weeks liquids, 2 weeks pureed and 1-2 weed soft foods coming up soon! At my 2 week check with surgeon I was down 18 pounds. I know we are not supposed to weigh everyday but I have some serious OCD. The weight definitely slowed after the first 2 weeks but as soon as I cut out dairy products it's coming off again. I had a very large hernia and have had to sleep in a recliner for like 5 years. I'm finally sleeping in bed, FLAT, like a baby. I can go to bed around 11 and wake up at 5:30 totally refreshed and ready to conquer the world. I'm following a scheduled of 3 shakes with 3 2 oz high protein pureed "meals" and making sure I get my water in. Every day around 5:30 or 6 I just crash. If I sit down during that time I fall asleep in like 10 seconds and sleep for about an hour. This is very unlike me -I'm not a napper. Then I wake up and I'm full of energy to go do stuff till like 10 pm. Anyone else experiencing this crash that late in the day?
  11. I have not been on here in years but don’t know where to go for help. I had the sleeve on 6-10-13 I lost 135 pounds and was extremely happy with the results over the years I was able to maintain and would go up and down a little but stayed within 10 pounds of my lowest weight of 140. Then COVID hit and now I am working from home and don’t get out much and I am weighing in at 180. I am terrified to gain my weight back and can already feel it in my joints and such just the weight I put on. I can’t seem to get back on track. I need any ideas/tips that anyone can offer. Someone that has gone though a weight gain of 40 lbs and got it back off. thanks

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

I was scheduled for July 23, but my governor just banned elective surgeries again. Now I have no idea when I'll be able to reschedule. I certainly don't want to be in a hospital with a bunch of COVID-19 patients, so I'm not really complaining. We shouldn't have opened as fast as we did. Just got my hopes up prematurely. 😞

    Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!

I meant to ask. I still can. I think on my own scale my weight before I left was 102.2 and yes there’s the Faja, drain, stockings to account for. I’m so exhausted from just small things I can’t think. I had a lot of swelling in my knees and feet in particular that thankfully has finally gotten better. Some issues with a stress point incision. I have one drain on my right hip. I don’t have the pictures, my surgeon does. But he is going to share them as part of the BariatricPal Hospital BC. I will find out when and where they share the photos. They edit them to maintain privacy. Most people don’t give permission but I chose to do so to support the Hospital which was founded by the same person that created these forums and the BariatricPal store. I find it interesting that some surgeons put patients in a binder immediately after surgery, or even Faja. I was wrapped in gauze, surgical tape etc. two days after surgery the outer bandaging was removed and everything checked and I got showered before the Faja was put on. (My brain is fuzzy on details) the thigh lift is the hardest so far to manage but I desperately needed it. I see some people’s before pictures and I think .... are you serious that’s normal compared to what mine was. the drain doesn’t bother me I know how to manage it. I’ve basically been doing the nursing doctoring whatever myself which I’ve done in my many surgeries in the past. (The difference though is my Myalgic Encephalomyelitis has grown worse over time. Life takes its toll as do all the other medical conditions.) Any questions and I will answer if I can. Not much else for me to do. Between Covid-19 and the heat/high humidity in Florida I have to avoid ... and my M.E. I’m fully homebound. I’m trying to remember to walk around but can’t do it outside. I want to even do laundry myself. Even if I could the machines are outside down a catwalk in a shared laundry room.

    Alcohol 😳

soda water..... Oh, and you asked a very open ended question 😋 The soda thing varies from Dr to Dr. I am 10 months out and dink it on occasion with no complications. But, everyone's body is different, I would not drink it until you are a few months out in order to let your body heal.

update on 10 years out regain, and weight loss

I am thinking about staying right here at the 185 mark for a while. For me, maintaining my weight, and knowing how to do that is important. So yes, I am still considered obese. My BMI is 34 unless you look at the age BMI and I get to be 33 BMI - I have lost and regained and then re lost weight. Started the journey at 320. Lost over 140 pounds Gained back 40 in 10 years Lost 35 in the past year. Just bought myself clothing in a size 16 petite. Not plus size anything. If I had wanted to hem pants, I could have bought size 14s. Not hemming pants. I walked into Kohls knowing I couldn't try on clothes. I bought 4 pr of capris and 2 pr of slacks all for work. mix and match with 10 tops and 2 light weight jackets. ALL on major sale - all guessing on sizing - needed to return 3 things that didn't look right for me. I am good for now. Will learn to maintain this weight within a few pounds either way. And feel like it is a huge success. I feel good. I am eating well. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, good proteins, some carbs, and a treat or two .... Using my tool 10 years out.
  17. Thank you all for responding. It us encouraging hearing your stories. I also have fibro so WAS taking 60 mg for that, so added tylenol arthritis extra strength for that. I have weaned myself to 10 mg a day on that. It makes me sweat soooooooo bad. It also helped my nerves though.

    October 2019 surgery peeps?

I had my sleeve done 10/7/19 and just found out I might be getting a bypass done. Acid reflux has been horrible, my hilated hernia came back even worse than before and i have severve esophagitis.
  20. Y’all I finally got there this morning!!! Exactly 199.0 pounds. I have not been here in over 10 pounds! I’m so happy, excited, and looking forward to the rest of the way. However, I wonder if I’m the only one who also kind of gets this feeling of horror. Like I’ve already lost 77.6 pounds since surgery 4 months ago and I feel like that’s a lot of weight but I’m just getting to onederland????! I weighed a lot! Of course I knew that but it just kind of confirms it I guess in my mind. I don’t know how to explain it. People will ask me how much weight I’ve lost and when I tell them they’re like omg that’s a lot!!! And then I’m thinking but I still have a long way to go!! but anyways, all that aside, thank all of y’all for your encouragement, advice, listening ears (eyes). This community is awesome!
  21. Yeah, not eating much at all. I lost the first 10 pounds on my 2-week pre-op diet, and the last 10 pounds in just the week since my surgery. It does not feel good. Fast weight loss is the goal, but I feel like I'm dying. My post-op diet is 2 weeks of full liquid. I'm supposed to aim for 48-64 ounces of water a day, and 70g of protein. I'm lucky if I can get halfway on the protein. I wish I could eat cottage cheese, or scrambled eggs, or SOMETHING, but it's liquids only. So I basically make a protein shake in the morning and drink half of it for breakfast, and the other half for lunch. I supplement with jello or sometimes a sugar-free popsicle as snacks. I also drink water with Nectar protein powder in it, as much as I can stand. For dinner I have broth or miso soup. I just checked my log and I've had 260 calories today, 34 grams of protein, and about 40 oz of water. I could not eat another thing, I'm not hungry. And I'm not dehydrated yet. However, I'm exhausted, and feel light-headed and awful if I try to do more than walk to the mailbox and back. I guess theoretically I should try to force myself to sip on a protein shake during the day, but I can barely get down the one I drink now. I have a follow-up appointment tomorrow and I'll surely be discussing this with them. I also ordered some high-protein soup mixes to try. It just sucks when you're stuck on liquids only. I mean there's only so many things you can consume.

    Hello Everyone

Welcome! I also debated this surgery for years before pulling the trigger and I definitely regret not doing it sooner. My stats: 40 yo F, 5’3” SW 205. CW 144, sleeved 8/27/19, so I am almost 10 months out. I lost most of my weight in the first 6 months, around 50 lbs, then my weight loss slowed. I am currently at 144 lbs and feel great, but I am still pushing to lose another 10-15 lbs. While this forum can be very informative and a great source of support and motivation, I do recommend trying not to compare your weight loss with others. We all lose at different rates and may have stalls at different times, but if you stick to your program you will be successful! Best of luck with your journey!!!!

    Weight gain 5 years out

yes. I gained 10 lbs between last summer and the end of the year (after the holidays). So far I have taken off five of it, but it has been an absolute BEAR. I have no idea if I'll be able to take off the remaining five. I look fine as I am and don't really need to lose it, but it's a mental thing with me. But to answer your question, yes - pretty much universally, it's WAY harder to lose weight the second time around (or third...or fourth...). I've vowed just to never let myself gain weight again - it's way too hard to get it off!

    EGD procedure

I've lost count of how many EGD's I've had done (probably close to 10 now) because I have EOS (eosinophilic esophagitis) so I usually get 1-3 of those a year (I'm overdue for my next one and, oh joy, I will have to get my throat stretched the next time I have one -_-"). The EGD's don't hurt. They give you something to put you out and the next thing you know, you're waking up in recovery and 10 minutes later they let you go home. You'll probably be a little dizzy from the meds they used to put you under so my advice is don't watch your feet lol. Also, depending on the meds, you might be nauseous afterward as well...
