    Protein Shake Ideas

I mix soy protein powder (I don't do whey unless it's organic because I'm vegetarian) with unsweetened almond milk. The unsweetened vanilla almond milk is fabulous! I think it is the key to good tasting protein shakes.
  2. .Hi Feedyoureye, can I ask what your stats are? And if you don't mind, you're age? Just curious. I love how involved you are on the sight after five years and still doing so well. Sometimes when the newness wears off so does the enthusiasm. I'm 53 and I just never want to go back to where I was. I'm pretty sure I won't but this just reaffirms this is a lifetime journey SW 260 lowest weight after surgery, 170 (took me 3 years to get there) stated goal 170-173 bad year where my mom died, my little dog died and developed bone spurs in my right knee.... current weight 195 still working on it... would love to get the weight down a bit again... I am a vegetarian, I am currently 62 years old, 5'9", large boned. I take a bellydance class twice a week, walk twice a week, and kayak or hike or something once a week. I do not do very low carbs, never did.... I do take my Vitamins, don't always drink enough Water but keep trying to, when I use fit bit and myfitnesspal I am more successfull than if I do not. I do a partial fast twice a week (the 5:2) I still want to answer the call to adventure and I'm going to try and get my motorcycle license next week. You can never fully forget that you need to keep on track. Its boring, disappointing and unpredictable.... I fall off the wagon weeks at a time, but I really try not to forget... and get back on track. I don't want to make change that I can't keep doing... that leads to yoyo. so, no fad diets. No cutting out things I like completely. I try to eat more veggies all the time, find things I really like that make me feel good and are really healthy choices. I try and drown out the crap eating with lots of good eating. This forum is my society. When I leave it, I start to forget where I am.

    Foods You Eat

I am 8 months out. At this point I am capable of eating just about anything except bread... bread hits me like a rock with anything more than a tiny bite. But I don't mind since I really was never a huge bread eater (pasta was my kryptonite...) My daily foods include -chicken -pork -ground meat (hamburger or turkey or sausage) -eggs -plain greek yogurt (with flavored syrups or splenda to sweeten, normally add Protein as well) -cheese! -tuna -shrimp -lunch meat -protein shakes I cook these in a variety of ways, but grilling (on my counter top grill) is my favorite. It is quick and since I have lots of experience with it I have no trouble timing it so that the meat comes out tender every time. With the ground meat I either eat it out of a bowl with cheese on top or I make meatballs of some sort. As you can tell... I am definitely NOT a vegetarian! LOL I also am not all that creative with it. But I like simple food the best so I'm not missing anything!

    Has Anyone Read "Skinny B--ch"

Ha ha I absolutely love it. It cuts the B.S. and just tells it like it is. While I would LOVE to be a vegetarian (as the book espouses), i have been vegetarian before and I always become severely anaemic -- so that rules that out. I absolutely need red meat, for some reason. Back to "Skinny Bitch". If you want a wake up call from some no-holds-barred authors who won't tiptoe around the issue and "nurture your feelings" then it's a great read. Definitely shocks you into submission  But I can understand it being far too confronting for some, as they do swear a lot and present you with some uncomfortable truths about the food we eat every day. So, have a flick through before you buy it, make sure that you're not offended or anything by the terminology, then buy and enjoy On another note, their cookbook "Skinny Bitch in the Kitch" has a lot of lovely recipes. Highly recommended! (obviously all vegetarian).
  7. Hey everyone, I'm exactly 3 weeks post op today! I have been feeling GREAT! No pain since 5days post op other then some soreness. I went back to week last Monday so it was 13 days post op & I did great (office work) other then feeling like I had no energy 1/2 way thru the day! I have not had any nausea since I left the hospital. At my 1 week post op appt my dr have me my new menu which consists of scrambled egg, cheese, yogurt, vegetarian refried beans, mashed potatoes, tuna, & grilled fish. I have been doing great with all the above I've tried! When I go to my 1 month post op next week I get a new menu. I can't wait. I'm getting tired of the same 7 items lol. I lost 21 lbs the first 2 weeks post op & then gained 1.5 lbs & have stayed at that weight the last 6 days. My clothes are definately getting loose on me. I have dropped 1 size. I hope everyone else is doing good & good luck to u all. I will keep u updated!

Bummed i have only lost 25 pounds in 3 yrs

I am in a very similar situation and am hoping for some advice. I was banded in July 2007 and since then have lost 70 of the 170 of my goal. There was a lot of time in between fills as I moved to Ireland two years after being banded and then to India for six months where I lost 40 of the 70lbs and now I'm back in the US. I went in for a fill about a year ago and then around 4 months ago started having issues where I was vomiting nasty black tar in the middle of the night and had HORRIBLE reflux. Just yesterday it was determined that my band had slipped slightly. My band is now empty and will be for the next couple of months, I only had 2cc in my band in the first place and now my nurse is telling me I can NEVER be that full again :-( this news to me is basically telling me I'll be basically empty forever! I'm so discouraged and I don't really know what to do. Has anyone ever been told after a slippage that they can never be as full as they were when the slippage occurred? Also what are some opinions on why I may be stalled? I was diagnosed with hypo thyroidism and am currently not on medication. (long story short my husband doesn't really understand the culture of being medicated here and he doesn't feel I should be "wasting money" on taking medication for hypothryoidism. He thinks that me being overweight is simply my fault for not eating as well as I could be [even though in my opinion I don't eat THAT badly]) on top of that it's hard for me to get my Protein in because he is also a vegetarian and thinks that meat and cheese is bad for you and god forbid I be able to convince him otherwise. I'm at a loss, I don't understand why I'm not losing anymore and I don't know what to do about my hypothyroidism and I'm not sure what to think about never being able to go above 2cc again either! please help!

    Mediterranean Style Eating

For me, this isn't a matter of "stop liking what I don't like!" This is a matter of someone going beyond "the vegetarian path worked for me." It directly trashes the medical profession, as well as advocates for a lifestyle that is exceptionally difficult to maintain, disregards the long-standing advice of doctors/nutritionists, perpetuates pseudo-science, and takes thinly-veiled potshots and side jabs at others. Advice that has the potential to be dangerous matters, and deserves appropriate criticism. As for the sarcasm, when you are deliberately provocative and continue to refer to meat as "dead animal flesh," expect a bit of tongue-in-cheek response. I can definitely see why the language would cause offense and it's a pity because I do think there is a good point to be made and discussion to be had about the current state of our food, the standard American diet and even the nutrition guidelines given by bariatric surgeons. I think for me I am able to look past the inflammatory statements because my interest in eating a vegetarian or vegan diet does not stem from moral or ethical concerns really. So I don't get on that high horse. I mean don't get me wrong, I don't think it's okay that so many animals are kept in deplorable conditions and force fed foods/given things that are causing issues in humans like antibiotics with poultry etc. I come at it from reading scientific research that is increasingly suggesting that consumption of animal products maybe detrimental to health. Some of the people saying this are bariatric surgeons who themselves have treated thousands of patients and have data to back up their assertions. So I get the ire, but I also can see the original point being lost in the flames.

    Mediterranean Style Eating

@@VSGAnn2014 You forgot the "dead bodies of helpless, slaughtered animals". I, too, am healthier now than I ever was before. High fat, high Protein, high spice, fresh foods. I'm not sure what food that has sunshine in it is either, but I do prefer free range chickens and humanely raised beef and they lived out in the sunshine, so... I totally get why some people are vegan or vegetarian. It's kind of like religion or sexuality, it's a personal choice. What I don't understand is the inflammatory and provocative language that some choose to use regarding other's choices.

    OVER 300 lbs

In the morning I usually have either a single serving of instant oatmeal or I make a protein shake and for my lunch I'll eat something like a slice of cheese with a veggie burger and I'm not a vegetarian but those burgers are so good without bread of course????and maybe a very small salad sometimes I can't eat all the burger so I'll eat half. My meals vary from day to day and I eat 4 small meals a day and I feel good. Congrats on your new journey and if you have any questions feel fee to ask ????

    Mediterranean Style Eating

I was a vegan for about 2 years and vegetarian for a year after that, all leading up to my WLS. (Btw-- I am not a moral veg-eater. I used to eat meat, then got sick, and couldn't eat it anymore.) In getting my sleeve done, my nutritionist and I devised a plan on how I'd be able to get my Protein in / keep the carbs low. I stuck vegetarian. I get my protein from Protein shakes , meatless ground beef (I swear this actually tastes pretty good), Beans, eggs, cheese and Greek yogurt (which I had to build up a tolerance to). I'm getting about 70-80g of protein in daily right now. My nutritionist also has me taking B12 and Vitamin D every other day (so I'm not missing nutrients with my intake). Oddly enough I was willing to attempt red meat / whatever to get my protein in, because I want to be very successful post-op, but when I tried it still made me really sick. ????

    Mediterranean Style Eating

Friends, thanks for all the feedback. It wasn't my intent to spark a heated debate. For the record, I'm not a vegetarian. I went Veg a few years back and at times felt I would collapse and was always a big meat eater but my surgery changed the game, obviously. I still eat meat but much less of it. Not several times a day most days, but only when I crave it. Mostly I have been craving nuts, fruits, and raw chocolate and coconut oil based foods. I supplement with non-gmo Collegen protein. I just hear the bariatric gospel of high protein, low carbs so much that I started to worry, but I did Atkins 20 years ago and I don't think it's healthy and that is basically what many surgeons' offices advocate.

    B12 advice

I’m hoping they’re basing this on your blood tests & you are lacking in B12. That rigorous of an injection regime does seems extreme. But your blood tests could be showing you are very low & need a more intensive regime. But I’d still quiz your GP further about what your levels actually are & what they should be if only for your own information. Out of curiosity, are you a vegetarian or vegan? B12 is found in animal products (meat, seafood, poultry, dairy) so if you don’t eat much of these foods it could be contributing. @catwoman7 is correct. Sleevers don’t tend to have the absorption issues those with a bypass can. I only had to take a multivitamin & no other supplements while losing. I gave them up at 8 months post surgery & haven’t taken any vitamins since then. Don’t need to as my 3 monthly blood tests show I absorb enough from what I eat.

    Food Journal Thread

Wow, this is a great idea!!! I was so hard on myself when I wasn't losing weight. Looking at the posts here, I wasn't really as bad as I thought. My food was healthier probably even, but, my portions were probably too large. I admit, now that I am doing Nutrisystem with the band, I don't have to count calories as much (they do it for me) Do most of you have to eat at the same time? I do, or I get off track. I wake up around 8:30am I have to take thyroid medicine, so, I can't eat for 2 hours. I have my Calcium bar (90 calories) around 10:30am 11:30 today, I had my Cranberry granola bar-120 calories 2:30p I had lunch chicken salad and melba toast-approx 170 calories 4:30p Lite yogurt-110 calories-no fat 6:30p I have a salad with just lettuce and parmesan cheese and low fat dressing-approx 170 calories? I don't know the calorie content of lettuce. It was a small tupperware type bowl. 8:30p I had vegetarian lasagne (210 calories) 10:30p I have soy sour cream and onion chips (110 calories) If I counted right, 980 calories. I eat basically every two hours. I feel like I am constantly eating, but, since I started this, it jumpstarted my weightloss again. I have lost 15 pounds in less than a month. Before this, I had plateaued for about 8 months. I haven't even started back excercising yet. I had been really lazy in that dept. I know with the lapband, you are suppose to only have 3 meals, but, I found I was hungrier and would eat more when I did eat.
  17. So even my own literature from my dr, the Nut and the bariatric dept contradicted each other. My surgeon is a but radical. He basically said go vegetarian (not happening). He told me drinking and eating should be completely separate and you should not drink for an hour and a half after eating. The paper work from the clinic 1 hour. The nut 30 minutes, the hospital 30 minutes. So I wait at least 30 minutes. If I waited an hour and a half, I would never get all my water in. I try to stick in the 30 - 45 minute range.

    Hope For Second Year Sleevers

5'9" 1200-1600 cals a day. I eat anything, not low carb, I do keep track of everything I eat though... just to stay conscious...I just got back from New Orleans where I ate french fries and beignets everyday (because I am a vegetarian, and they put meat in EVERYTHING) gained 3 pounds in 11 days. Lost it again in two after I got back. I wanted to get back to eating my regular way... I was tired of all the carbs without fresh veggies and protein. Now theres a switch!

    Need help

I am active duty wanting desperately to get lap band. I have done a lot of research and each doctor is different with the bmi requirements. I am just under 34% bmi. I went to my PCM on Wednesday, he said he would put in my referral but today said he needed to talk to me. Don't know about what, but hoping its not to pop my bubble. I have high cholesterol and triglycerides. I got my blood work back today and found out that my cholesterol went up 20 points since Jan. I became a vegetarian 3 months ago. I have been dieting for the past 7 years with no luck, every time I get 10lbs off then I gain 15 more. I haven't been able to run for 2 and a half years. I NEED to lose about 75lbs to get back in shape. I might be facing a MEB and I only have 8 yrs till retirement. If anyone has any advice on getting TriCare to pay it would be very much appreciated.:rolleyes2:

    Per-op Day 1

Oh nooo! It will get easier, I promise! Especially if you can eat some real foods, not just liquids. I went vegetarian for two years; I started because I wanted to impress a boyfriend (lolol) and so it was initially really hard to start and ignore all the delicious foods I was used to eating. Eventually as I got rid of all the stuff I couldn't eat in my house and only bought the right foods/frequented the right restaurants, it got so easy I never had to think about it. Even smelling meat didn't make me want it, and I bet it gets like that with non-doctor-diet foods for you. It's gonna be okay!
  24. Just a quick response since I am not pescatarian or vegetarian. There are vegetarians on this site who can help you. You might get more responses if you post in the food and Nutrition Forum. I THINK there is a vegetarians subforum. As to how much fish is safe to eat I think it varies depending on the fish and where it comes from. The Environmental Defense Fund has some good information on their website. Also, I live in Kentucky and our Department of Fish and Wildlife has info on their website about locally caught fish. If you eat local fish you might want to see if your state has something similar. Best of luck.

    Week 6: May 27-31st Sleevers

I've lost 40lb overall, including the two week preop diet. It seems like I'm a slow loser compared to the others, but I think it's because of my PCOS. I'm meticulous about weighing and tracking what I eat. I hope I don't have to do it forever, but for the time being, it's keeping me on track and accountable, and it's teaching me what's the right amount of what sorts of things to eat. @@tattoogirl233, if I were you, I'd be careful about just eating what you want, even if it's only a little bit. That might not be why you're losing slowly now (everyone's body is different), but it could be the thing that keeps you from being as successful as you could be long term. Do you have any idea how much protein you eat vs. carbs? Or even how many calories? What about your water? These are important things to know. Also, there's no reason you can't eat what you want, as long as what you want is healthy food. I've been pretty lucky, because even though I ate some junk food in the old days, I've also always loved good, healthy whole foods (I just used to eat waaay to much of even them). Yeah, there are some things I miss, but I'm certainly not feeling deprived now or forcing myself to eat things I don't like (with the exception of my morning protein shake perhaps). I realize already liking "healthy" food gives me an edge up in this, you'll feel so much better without all the processed stuff. To give you an idea of what my high protein (vegetarian) diet looks like, here's today: Breakfast: 1 slice of protein bread, mustard, 2 slices of Tofurky deli slice, half a slice of cheddar cheese, lettuce (I ate half) Lunch: second half of the above sandwich Dinner: I made a yummy curried chickpea yogurt dip and I'll have a couple tablespoons of that with some veggies Snacks: I have some Babybells and blueberries in the fridge. I'll probably have one Babybell and some point and maybe 1/3 cup blueberries. Also, dry roasted soybeans (they basically taste like peanuts and are like high protein crack!). I'll also intersperse two protein shakes throughout the day. This is what works for me. You need to find what works for you, but it should be something that will set you up for long term success. The extreme restriction won't work forever, so my bet would be that eating a little of whatever you want, isn't going to do that.
