    Eating spicy foods

Im 12 weeks out RNY and gave away some tins of spice tuna that I was scared to try but last night I had to make some vegetarian dishes for friends who love spice. I made some very spicy things like Lebanese lentil salad and harissa falafel. I tested both and omg they were hot but no problem on the stomach just my tongue lol Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. You won't lose on carbs at 1400 calories and low bmi. How many grams of protein are you getting a day? You should be getting it all from food, with the occasional shake if you are away from home or running behind. Yogurts, cottage cheese, but you won't feel restriction with these and will need to weigh/measure and stick to that instead of the 'full feeling'. Why can't you eat meat - fish, chicken, etc? My NUT says during this losing phase it is very hard to meet goals with vegetarian eating and that you can incorporate it closer to goal. If you are vegetarian - didn't your NUT give you guidelines? The body uses carbs first because it is easy fuel and won't burn fat if you keep feeding it carbs. How many grams of carbs are you consuming in a day? List your food intake for a day. You say you record your food are you using a free app like Baritastic or myfitnesspal? You should see all your macros - this surgery is about protein goals, then veg - you mentioned NONE.

    Protein shakes

Hello I'm new here but I can give you some good advice on this. I'm vegetarian, have been having major nausea (7 weeks out of op) and my dietician thinks its protein related - we will see! I also have a lot of nausea associated with milk products and creamy consistencies. So it sent me on a field trip of sorts and I have some decent products that I've tried that you may like. This is an essay - sorry! But am passing on some advice from a professional and giving my taste buds a voice too. We have a hard time finding quality tasty food and taste is as important as quality to me. I'm Aussie so these are products over here but web search if you have a different location. Here they are: My favourite one is "Ultra Leaan Protein" (yes 2 'a's in Leaan :)) by "Cybrog" in the wild raspberry flavour. I add 3 scoops to my bottled water = 15gms of protein. This is really just like a cordial - close to a poweraid but maybe a little more artificial sweetener (I could do without some of that personally but its the best tasting overall product so far). The best thing about this is it contains the required amino acids too. It's expensive but worth it for me - 2 bottles of water with this a day = 30gms of extra protein. This was $79.95 AUD a tub of 60 scoops but I am sure I can find it cheaper elsewhere! (??) My Dietitian gave me a sample of "Formulate" Banana shake mix. Comes in a bottle - just add water (convenient). This has a whopping 35 gms of protein per small bottle. BUT don't expect a shake taste, its watery and really like a banana water flavour. It is pleasant enough though. The down side is that it took me half a day to get down with my sippy sippy status! By then the seeds it contains swelled and at the end I was swallowing expanded chia seeds. Not a big deal but for us guys something to remember. Maybe worth halving before adding water and doing in 2 lots? (this was a free sample, don't know the cost) I also took it upon myself to try the "Isopure" glass bottles of pre-made 'cordial'. These tasted really crappy but if you can get down one 600ml (actually 591mls! such an odd amount) bottle in small amounts over the day you can nab 40gms of extra protein. It's zero carb too zero sugar. $5.95 a bottle I picked all these up from the Wexford pharmacy at Murdoch St. John of God hospital complex Western Australia. They have loads of other products too. Other than this, some complete proteins was recommended so not just baked beans but baked beans on toast /muffin when able is a complete protein with protien and amino acids. Eggs are a complete protein as well. Of course if you are a meat eater, no probs. Best of luck!!

    Vegan Protein Shakes

I was vegetarian for 3 years, and always made my own protein shakes with Orgain Organic Protein Powder. 2 scoops of Orgain Chocolate Protein Powder (150 cals, 21g protein, 5g fiber, 5g net carbs) 1Tbsp of PBFit Peanut Butter Powder (25 cals, 3g protein, 2g fiber, 2g net carbs) 2Tbsp Hemp Seeds (114 cals, 7g protein, 2g fiber, 0g net carbs) 1Tbsp ground Flax Seeds (37 cals, 1g protein, 2g fiber, 0g net carbs) 2 cups of Unsweetened Almond Milk (60 cals, 2g protein, 0g fiber, 2g net carbs) 1 medium frozen banana (105 cals, 1g protein, 3g fiber, 24g net carbs) 1 cup frozen spinach (45 cals, 6g protein, 4g fiber, 2g net carbs) Ice and water to desired consistency Macros: (536 cals, 41g protein, 18g fiber, 35g net carbs) This makes approximately 32-40 ounces depending on amount of ice and water added, so if you broke this up to 2 shakes, 268 cals, 20.5g protein, 9g fiber, 17.5g net carbs.

    I'm a Picky Eater...

Vegetables are a super important part of our new lifestyle. This is where you are going to get a lot of your nourishment from after surgery. I was a vegetarian for three years, and love almost all vegetables now. I started with meatless Monday. I did all vegetables, fruits and grains on that day. I then did a two week juice fast after watching Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. That changed my taste buds for sure. I was so happy to eat after the two weeks that I actually ate a raw beet on my first day of eating food after the fast. I have been eating lots of veggies ever since. Oven roasting and grilling are great for adding flavor to veggies. Roasted carrots, green beans, asparagus, beets, sweet potatoes, onions, and squash of all types are good. Try adding spinach, onion and tomato to egg white omelets. Ease yourself into other veggies by first starting with mixed veggies at lunch and/or dinner. Look up good recipes for thing like cabbage and collard greens. A pot of these can be spread over many meals. Stuffed bell peppers and/or poblano peppers are really good. There are tons of recipes on line of that as well. You have some time. Start now though. You do not want to go into your post-op diet not liking vegetables. Meat, cheese and eggs are great, but they will not be enough to nourish your body long-term.

    Diner ideas

Just look up recipes, and make them your own. You can make virtually anything low carb, low fat, vegetarian, or whatever you want by switching ingredients. I like to use staples over and over in different meals to save time and waste. Taco Salad (Spinach, Tomato, black beans, cheese, cilantro, red onion, avocado slices, seasoned turkey or veggie crumbles) Asparagus Enchilada Burrito (leftover seasoned turkey or veggie crumbles, cheese, roasted asparagus, black beans wrapped in Flatout Multigrain w/ Flax flatbread with Las Palmas enchilada sauce (1/4 cup - can eat 1/2 in a sitting) Roasted poblanos stuffed with leftover seasoned veggie crumbles, spinach, cheese, mushrooms and Las Palmas enchilada sauce ( 1/4 cup) Trident Wild Caught Salmon Patty w/sautéed spinach and quinoa Spinach Salad w/leftover Trident Wild Caught Salmon (spinach, tomato, red onion, cheese, chopped roasted asparagus, Olive Garden light Italian salad dressing) Chicken and Shrimp Skewers (Chicken pieces, shrimp, tri-colored bell peppers, red onion in pieces) fajita style leftover Chicken and shrimp fajita taco on Flatout flatbread with avocado, spinach and fat free refried black beans leftover fajita Chicken Caesar Salad (spinach, shredded parmesan cheese, caesar dressing, chopped red onion, chicken)
  8. I have always had a love of food, which many will say was unhealthy, and I agree...I did go overboard. I just ate too much, pure and simple. I don't think that my food choices were necessarily the culprit though. I loved to make great tasting foods healthier...Still do. I just don't go out to eat that much, and don't snack on crap. My little gift from the surgeon also allows me to eat a lot less. I believe that those three things were the culprit. So, I love to meal prep and make staples on Saturdays and Sundays. I make a lot...Enough for probably 8-12 meals. I end up freezing some of it for another time, so I tend to have a huge selection of healthier TV dinners in my freezer. It is just easier for me that way. I actually made a Vegetarian King Ranch Chicken casserole last week. I pretty much followed the Ro-Tel instructions, but replaced the chicken with half chopped up Quorn chicken strips, and half chopped up mushrooms. I then also added in two pounds of fresh spinach to the recipe along with Light Cream of Mushroom instead of regular Cream of Chicken and Cream of Mushroom . It turned out great. The calories and fat were cut in half, and the fiber and protein were increased at the same time. I only allowed myself four ounces of the stuff per sitting, and that is it. I would normally have six or seven times that. I enjoy food today just as much as I always have. I just make it healthier, eat way less of it, and find a way to fit it into my diet in a way that doesn't destroy my progress. I eat a lower fat, lower calorie diet, focusing on getting a mix of different nutrients. I feel that I need fiber, polyphenols and antioxidants almost as much as I need protein and healthy fats, so I try to eat lots of vegetables, fruit, and ancient grains as well. I don't have room to eat as much of those things as I would like, but I'm working on it.

Can I puree anything and would it be acceptable?

I find that unless one is a strict vegan/vegetarian, almost anything can be obliterated to tiny particles in an excellent blender then mixed with 25mL, 50mL, 75mL, 100mL or 125mL of pourable raw egg whites. These amounts of egg whites offer an extra 15g, 29g, 44g, 58g or 73g of extra dietary protein respectively. Egg whites blended into anything else are near to neutral. Makes swallowing anything else easy for most people. My dietitian and surgeon applauded this idea for protein building. Each 55g (2oz) egg only adds 7g protein plus a whack of fat and may kick your cholesterol count way out. Egg whites are negligible to zero cholesterol depending on brand or processing.

    August Sleevers-How are you doing??

Clif bars taste pretty decent, but they do look like someone chewed them once already right before they went into the package. Pretty high in carbs, too. Though, if I remember correctly, you're vegetarian, so I gather you have to approach the carbs/protein thing very differently than I do.

    Any New York City Sleevers?

Sorry about the delay in response.....West Indian and Native American. What do I eat? Well this surgery has made me somewhat of a vegetarian. Meat does not settle too well. I do have to watch my calorie intake as well as water. I do try to make smoothies. I have one protein shake (Premier Protein). I still only can eat small amounts at a time. I get acid reflux at times really badly. Sent from my LG-US996 using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. I think the ricotta bake is vegetarian. If you do a google search you should find the recipe. Also the tofu Parmesan is vegitarian and soft. Welcome !!!
  14. Hi all, I am new here From what I have read everyone seems very supportive and wonderful! I am 20 days post op from the DS Loop and I am a vegetarian. Anyone have any good recipes to share that is still "Soft foods" I am sick of soup haha Thanks in advance!
  15. I really like the website veganricha.com for vegan recipes and many of them are Indian food. She has 2 cookbooks. The first is vegan Indian food. Her flavors are great and many are simple. I also like cookieandkate.com for vegetarian and vegan recipes and isachandra.com for vegan recipes.
  16. I don’t consider myself one or the other. I don’t care for labels, but I do tend to say whether the dish is a vegan or vegetarian one, as my dear friend @Apple1 mentioned. But it’s ultimately up to the person to figure out a recipe if I decide not to mention it. Also keep in mind this thread is specifically labeled Vegan/Vegetarian.
  17. I do believe @Newme17 has always identified all of her recipes as vegan or vegetarian depending on what it is so people will know, if it matters to them. I'm not sure why the warning is necessary?? Just really wondering.
  18. Be careful, though-it looks like Newme17 is vegetarian, not vegan. Not judging or calling her out, just letting you know.
  19. I did use the milk. I teeter totter between vegan and vegetarian meals. This one was awesome, but I’m wondering if I decided to substitute with maybe some almond milk and to thicken it up with a tad bit of cornstarch might do. ???? Not exactly sure what evaporated milk is made of or how it’s made. I guess I’ll look it up!

    Intermittent Fasting

Dr. Fung is kinda "late" to the fasting show and based his work on that of previous doctors such as Dr. Walter Longo and Dr. Krista Varady. But before Dr. Varady came Dr. Johnson who wrote the original Alternate Day Diet book. I've actually spoken to him through emails when I was doing ADF with caloric restriction. We discussed the disruption of circadian rhythms that can occur especially in women as a result of fasting/caloric restrictions. I did ADF with caloric control/low carb while I was undergoing chemo/radiation/surgery. I had an over 60% reduction in tumor size (very atypical for my kind of cancer). The onc could not believe it. I also had fewer side effects than some of the women who went through treatment at the same time. Here is Dr. Varady's book. Here is Dr. Johnson's book. You might find them interesting to read. Dr. Longo's work is really very very compelling. Also, he's a long distance runner and vegetarian (or vegan) if I remember correctly? I have planned to do the 5:2 or maybe ADF after reaching maintenance as a way of controlling insulin and regain. I used to blog about, but haven't updated it in a long time. There are some good articles there. It's called Fast Days/Healing Days. I'd started doing JUDDD about 4 months before cancer dx and had started this blog. (Johnson's Up Day Down Day Diet), coincidentally, a few months later 5:2 hit the UK and went crazy. That's a good book too btw--as is Dr. Moseley's 800cal diet for diabetes (new book).
  21. Thank you! It’s not very organized, but I’ve got all my Vegan/vegetarian recipes in it. 😁
  22. Hey everyone. Sorry, it’s been a while. I made an Indian dish called Chana Saag. First time making it. It’s vegetarian and smells so good. I’ll be serving it over rice for my hubby. No rice for me—still makes me too full too fast. Super easy recipe too, hope y’all can try t out sometime. I added extra curry.
  23. I have little one too. We eat alot of chicken now. I didn't really freeze much. But I've got cheese sticks, yogurt, shaved black forest ham, Whisps, and vegetarian vegtable soup on hand all of the time.
  24. Hello all! I'm 4 days post gastric bypass surgery and wondering if anyone has any ideas for VEGAN (not vegetarian) foods to include in my diet. Preferably something I can buy at a 'regular' store like Meijer and requires very little prep. I have the Cream of Wheat, oatmeal, grits, veggie broth, and a very nice carrot ginger soup. (SO disappointed I can't find sugar free vegan pudding...) Thanks!

    Post Op Diet Hell

9/25 was my same surgery date. I added canned chicken to cream soups. Some other things I'm eating now: tuna salad, egg salad, mashed avocado on liquid egg whites, vegetarian refried beans, cream of wheat with skim milk and protein power, sugar free jello with protein powder, chicken salad (canned not just cooked), I've blended vegetable beef soup, mashed sweet potato, cottage cheese, pureed baked eggplant with marinara.
