  1. Hi gang. So i was banded 10/07/11 and have had slow an steady weight loss. I also have had Fibromyalgia since 2003 (28yo) an recently have been diagnosed with Secondary Raynaud's and Lupus. I have noticed that as of lately when I am in a flare up my band is Super tight! Does anyone with autoimmune disorders experience this to? And how do you deal with it? Mis73 I know you deal with something too (not trying to call you out) do you have any tips? Right now its even tough getting down my meds. I also am going with warm liquids tea, chicken broth and such. Thanks guys!!

    Newly sleeved 2.28.13

I finally feel a little better. I saw my dr yesterday and he told me that all of my weakness, dizziness....is normal. He prescribed Prilosec for my tummy gurgling (I have to crush them for 2 more weeks) and said that after a few doses my tummy will be more receptive to creamy foods & drinks. I have been moved to creamy liquids, apple sauce, Protein shakes, creamed Soups, Beans...for week 2. He told me to build up to Proteins, drink slow but steady. My weight loss included 4 lbs lost between consult & surgery (1/21 to 2/25) So I'm down 24.4 (dr office weight fully dressed) 25 lbs (at home not dressed) But a loss is a loss!! I was 331 Pre op- 227 day of and 306.6 at his office I'm working on a banana cream flavored Protein shake right now. It's 11 oz and filling. I have no appetite at all and I'm not ever hungry so it's hard to drink because I'm full. I'm walking a bit (I have several autoimmune diseases and being off med's (some can not be crushed) has increased the daily difficulties of my life) but due to balance issues my walking is limited to inside (I lose balance & fall, I get numb and lose leg functions...) my neuro & rheumy along with my doctor have all said that once I can take my medicines again after 3 weeks that I will feel better and that I can worry about doing more walking then. He doesn't want me to fall on my tummy. Anyway I'm sipping all day, it's still hard to do an oz every 15 min because I'm super full. I have protein shakes, apple juice, Gatorade, water, ice chips, applesauce & popcicles on my menu today.

    CREST Syndrome

Unfortunately you'll find a lot of myths like that online. I know if you have predisposition for it exposure to toxins can trigger it, but medical devices aren't considered a toxin. I have an autoimmune disease, btw. I have Multiple Sclerosis. That's why I know the info I do about them and I'm familiar with a lot of the hoax causes and cures floating around, too. I'll be praying you don't have CREST or Lupus. Best wishes.

    CREST Syndrome

My goodness, I'm so very sorry. Have they tested you for Lupus too? I know CREST is autoimmune, if it is what's wrong could your band cause problems?

    prednisone hunger

Prednisone among other things is what got me here....... I am having a severe flare of my autoimmune disorder and have.held off increasing my prednisone as long as possible, well increasing it and a few days I have seen my hunger increase almost by double, my calories have gone from around 400 to around 780 and I'm controlling myself. This is a concern because I can not work out very much right now due to complications and my autoimmune disorder, question any veterans encountered this prednisone use and how do you handle this how do you not give in to the increasing constant hunger, I have tried increasing fluids, adding unflavored Protein but the scale has slowed and I read someones post that their nut said we should not be consuming more than 500 calories if we are not working out post op ? I'm feeling lost so if any one has any insight please let me know Cyn-shakiraa Dos 12-17-12

  8. Hi all! I'm a self pay who will be sleeved on Monday 2/25/13 with Dr. Borland in New Iberia, Louisiana. I'm a bit nervous, but I'm really ready! Over the years I've made appt. after appt with different doctors and I canceled everyone before my consultation. I am soooooo glad I canceled all those lap band appts. I have friends who got the band and have had nothing but trouble. Anyway my rheumatologist and my family doctor both suggested the sleeve and I tossed around the idea and prayed over it. It took a few weeks but I called and made the appt with Dr Borland and I had 2 weeks til my appt day (1/21/13) and I didn't cancel, I actually went to the consultation. I liked him on the spot. He was friendly, knowledgable, he answered my questions, understands my condition (I have several autoimmune diseases) and he said he felt very comfortable with me having surgery. The date was set for 2/25/13 for surgery. I had my blood work, chest X-rays & an EKG the following week (2/28/13) and my EKG had a high heart rate (106) so I explained that I had just trekked thru the hospital parking lot, then down the halls, back & forth from X-ray, back to admitting, back to X-ray....I told him "your heart would be beating fast too if you lugged 150 extra pounds around all day" that got a chuckle from him. So anyway I passed all my Pre-op tests, I've lost 8 lbs since I saw him. I have to do a clear diet for 24 hours before surgery and at 4pm on Sunday I have to drink 10oz of magnesium citrate and then again at 6pm. Nothing to drink that is red or citrus. I'm ready to be a BIG LOSER!!!!
  9. first be warned this is detailed and graphic..... so through out this my surgery date was 12/17/12 and with all the complications have had the flu, have had flare ups of my autoimmune disorder and now a severe infection in my jp tube where I such a high fever was projectile vomiting, foamies, because there is nothing in my pouch every 5 min and lethargic , sorry for being so graphic, so I could not eat or drink anything in my plan everything was too rich , well after god love my pcp finally gives me a suppository for nausea and sleep , I broke the rules yes yes I know but I became desperate... it is the only thing I knew from before that might work crackers and ginger ale. I'm not speaking bags of crackers and bottles , just a few here and there and a few sips, than worked up to broccoli cheese Soup and toast, and diffrent teas , tried a chicken veg soup and came back up chicken is a no no for my poor pouch right now even chicken stock!! so my question to you guys what do you do on your sick days? have you gone to "old" measures and if not how do you cope? the first time I just did Water and lemon and teas that did not help calm things as fast as the crackers and ginger ale and teas and this was day two and three but I am open to suggestions thanks everyone Cyn-shakiraa-*12/17/12*Sent from my mobile Rnytalk.

    Hypothyroids & Weightloss

Don't forget about Graves Disease, which is autoimmune. That is what I had. I was very thin.

    Fat Days...

I think we all need and want a chill out day sometimes regardless of the weight issue. I have bad arthritis and take methotrexate shots for it which can often tire me out in addition to just living with pain and autoimmune conditions so I enjoy the down days sometimes even when I don't feel blah just needing rest and mental break. Seems like under normal circumstances these days now and then would be healthy as well for anyone.

    OUCH!

If you Google it you will see that this surgery is the only one for those of us with autoimmune disease because it's the only wls that you can have NSAIDS and steroids

Diabetes for more than 5 years

I've been diabetic for about 15 years and take 6 different meds!!!!!!! I take 1000 er metformin, Amaryl, Actos, victoza, Lantus and benicar! I don't have hbp, but take it to protect kidneys. I also have ankylosing spondylitis and sjogrens syndrome. I have to have sleeve because of the latter 2. I am hoping the surgery will help with the pain ans fatigue that accompany them too. I don't expect great miracles with the autoimmune diseases, but less weight can't hurt! I turned 50 this week so I've been diabetic from an early age ans have not done well on controlling the way I should. I lost 60 lbs about 5 years ago and could see a huge difference in sugar control.

    Sleeve Vs Bypass

One More reason to have the sleeve. Once you have the bypass you can never take ibuprofen or any medication at that type, no steroids. when you're young you think you're invincible but if you get older and have arthritis or any kind of inflammatory disease you will wish you could take an ibuprofen! I have an autoimmune disease. My Rheumatologist would not approve the bypass but he would approve to sleeve.
  15. My surgeon did tell me that my reflux could get worse after being sleeved and the sleeve is not the first surgery they recommend for those with severe reflux. However, I am not a candidate for bypass due to an autoimmune disease. But if he thought is should not be done at all, he wouldn't do it. You have to make an informed decision - weighing the benefits vs. the risks (as in all surgeries). My weight also contributes to my reflux so in that respect it could get somewhat better. I also may have a hernia that can be repaired. As with any surgery, it is best to discuss all the risks of surgery and come up with the best decision based on your specific needs and health issues.
  16. Yeah it scared the hell out of me too! I am on day 6 and just now starting to feel good. I was like holy crap I am going to die even though I know that isn't true. I am a smart person. I did my research. It's not like any of us just rolled out of bed one morning and said gee I think I am going to get major surgery today. I agree With SinCityGal. It is a toxic site. I have been able to get my head back on straight by posting and reading here and in the group run by my surgeons office. My husband reminded me about that commercial for insurance that says.. it has to be true if its on the internet. LOL Bonjour!! I would advise anyone to stay far far away from that site. *As far as autoimmune diseases, the only one that is listed as a direct contradiction to the band is Lupus. But, even with Lupus, there are people who have it and still do just fine with the band. * I am not sure what all is actually listed as far as the company that makes the lapband but my surgeon said it was contraindicated in people with Lupus, HIV, and Rheumatoid arthritis. He went over all of that in my preop. He was very detailed in what expectations should be. I am so glad lupus has not shown up for you yet Missy. I do hope you dodge that one. I would not wish that on anyone. I admire your strength!

Is anyone familiar with the obesity help lb forum?

I actually know rather a lot about Lupus, which is why I laughed when I read someone was told the band caused Lupus. What I am guessing is, she likely already had undiagnosed Lupus before getting the band and the band sent the disease into over-drive. As far as autoimmune diseases, the only one that is listed as a direct contradiction to the band is Lupus. But, even with Lupus, there are people who have it and still do just fine with the band. The reason I know so much on this topic is because I have Multiple Sclerosis (another autoimmune disease). But, I also tested positive for Lupus in my spinal Fluid and 1 of the possible blood markers. However, I have not been officially diagnosed with Lupus because I didn't have all the blood markers nor do I have the symptoms. I'm told it's "almost inevitable" I will be at some point in my future because of the presence in my spinal fluid, but I am hopeful to dodge that bullet. MS is enough But... I did research it and talk to my surgeon at length about it. The band was worth the risk in my case. Even if I did develop full blown Lupus I'd still be glad for my band (and it sure as heck wouldn't be caused by my band!).
  18. Thanks, I'm doing pretty good. I've been off wheat entirely for at least two months now -- and I am not even attempting to give up dairy, I love it and eat loooooads of it. I also still eat too much sugar. But just giving up grains has been great, I've lost about 2kg from that, and my husband has lost 6kg from it! He also has a few autoimmune issues and migraines, both of which have gotten SOOOO much better since he gave up wheat. It's a weird thing, I never would have guessed it would have such an impact. Yes, I also dislike clubs, points, calorie counting -- all of that. I am too easily obsessed by that sort of thing, so much better for me to stay out of it in the first place.
  19. You can do this! I have had 8 surgeries, comorbidies and an autoimmune problem but banding has saved my life! I should have done this much sooner! 19 days post op and down 26 pounds!

    RA in REMISSION!

Well you know what they say...autoimmune disease, have one, collect the whole set! I am sorry about your teeth but that makes your remission all the more remarkable!! My teeth have been doing okay but I go to a salivation dysfunction clinic to be monitored. I just had my surgery 12-6 and my Sjogren's made me miserable the first 24 hours. The hospital didn't give me my Evoxac, saliva producing meds. My mouth was so dry, I had an extremely hard time speaking and the inside of my cheeks were sticking to my teeth. Fortunately my husband stayed with me. But it was so hard to swallow and I was thirsty but because of the surgery, it hurt to swallow and I was nauseated. I was sobbing and telling my husband how this was a huge mistake by 11:00 pm. Then when they would let me take the Evoxac, the nurse said because it was a capsule, I had to take it without the capsule covering. It was like trying to swallow dirt. I knew my doctor didn't instruct to do that with capsules but she insisted and I just wanted my meds. The next morning, the physician assistant for my doctor said I was right and she would clear it up. She said that there were several WLS doctors who had patients on the floor but one of them doesn't allow capsules and the nurses are just trying to be cautious. Thank God, I finally was feeling better, could get fluids down and got discharged. Then day by day, just like they said, it got better. Now I am looking forward to 2013 and getting to a healthy weight. Again, your post is going to give me a lot of inspiration! I just got my Remicade last week so in 8 weeks I will see what my CRP is like at that time. I hope each time it goes down

    RA in REMISSION!

Doxieville Lilaclass, Sounds like we have lots of junk in common on this adventure of life. I feel like autoimmune queen. Celiac disease, rosacea, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, RA, and then OA on top. It all sucks. Pain pain! I'm hoping weight loss sends pain for a long exile where I'm concerned. I am keeping it real so far though because I don't have a choice. Lost close to 40lbs since August but no good relief yet. Also, didn't know Celebrex was safe. Have to consider that. I see my rheumatologist on 1/10 for a checkup so I hope we can make some type of headway until I can take meds or injectables again. Good luck to you both with VSG and Arthur.

    RA in REMISSION!

Oh I would love a CRP that low! Yes, I have had the limit of injections in my wrist. I have been wearing a brace on it for over a year. It got so bad, I had to have a device* put on my steering wheel so I could drive. I have 2 autoimmune disorders, RA and Sjogren's so if it isn't managing one, it is the other. The doctor treating my wrist said he doesn't want to give me any more injections because he said the redness of my skin after could be signs of a problem. I just have to make it 2 more weeks till I can restart my Celebrex. Most of the time, I type with one hand or use my voice software. I was doing pretty good until this wrist stuff started Dec 2011. All of this is a big reason I had my sleeve surgery. I know how much my weight is factoring in on this. So your report is just what I needed to hear. * giant expensive hassle, evaluation, even had to get a driver's test with the device but it sure is nice to know I can drive and it doesn't hurt.
  23. I chose the sleeve rather than full gastric bypass, for several reasons...I keep saying well I must need the stomach if it was put there LOL, the full RNY scares me, the NUT said the sleeve I better for those with autoimmune diseases such as hypothyroidism especially with the stuff I have.. Good luck with your decision
  24. I became hypothyroid after the birth of my first child when I was 32. At the time, I was told it was thyroiditis and I believed that if I took medicine, eventually my body would regulate and I would stop needing medicine. A year ago an old classmate was describing her Hashimoto's and I had to ask my doctor if I had Hasimoto's. He was like, "absolutely," but he didn't think that mattered to my treatment. It mattered to me, because it's an autoimmune disorder and you can eat differently to help symptoms. When the doctor removed part of my stomach, there was an "irritated" section and I believe it was damage from gluten. Body shape wise, I would say I am more of a pear than a box or apple. Maybe the box shape is easier to see on a male frame?

    Water/food!

I understand. I have Sjogren's, dry mouth autoimmune disorder. But you can't drink with meals as it stretches your pouch and will lead to harm and undoing the whole point of the surgery. I know it is hard but you can do it. Set a timer for 30 mintures and distract yourself. Select foods that are easier to get down at this stage. If you really feel like you are about to cough or choke, you can do a massage that will make more saliva in your mouth so you can swallow easier. http://reasonablywell-julia.blogspot.com/2011/07/ssf-patient-education-sheet-how-to.html Also thinking about sour things like lemons can also make your mouth Water. Make sure to drink 30 minutes before your meal so you are well hydrated.
