    Update and 1st birthday since having surgery

    Keeping you eye on weight gains and then going back to logging your eating with some exercise will drop your weight back down. Congratulations and celebrate your one year with something for you!! ( not food)
  2. I had the sleeve and took omeprazole for about a year post op. I went off and had a great 3 years. This last year the pain of reflux and spasm has gone from mild to moderate to I am crying at 1 am unable to sleep. I kept my weight off (125 pounds) for 4 years but this last year I have regained about 15 or so. Is my weight gain the cause? I admit I was religiously off diet soda the first year or so but have slowly started drinking them again. Is it the soda? This last week has been unbearable. Should I try gaviscon or nexium? I have maintained my small meal small portion control. I blame weight gain to Covid, isolation, no gym and a sudden love of sandwiches (bread). Tho I eat a small half portion - is the bread doing more than weight gain?

    Rice, Pasta, Bread, etc

    I was told by my nutritionist to check out the Great Low Carb Bread Co. Wow am I glad I did! They make it all-breads, pastas, rice...whatever you want. There's no risk of dumping or weight gain. Just stick with a serving and you'll be good. It's all about portion-control when it comes to anything with our new lifestyle. I was sharing in another post on here that the other night, I mastered the art of "bariatric friendly mac and cheese" and tbh I couldn't be happier. In addition to that company, there's a whole slew of low carb and carb-free brands of pastas, breads, etc to try. I've tried several and while pricey, they're definitely worth it if you need that occasional "pasta fix." FYI if you're wondering about sauce, Ragu and Prego both make no sugar added sauces that are quite good! Good luck!

    Lean Cuisine & Healthy Choice Meals

    HealthWise is an excellent brand for microwaveable meals. The only downside is they're not sold in stores and have to be ordered online. I find I can eat their pasta-based dishes without worrying about weight gain or dumping. Their lasagna is especially delicious. As a side note if you ever do have a hankering for pasta though, I highly recommend you try out the Great Low Carb Bread Co. I mastered bariatric-friendly macaroni and cheese thanks to their macaroni and am more than pleased! Unfortunately, a lot of what we can eat as far as "quick fixes" just aren't sold in stores and/or are hard to find. It sucks. 😕
  5. I'm a sleeve to bypass revision and I've lost 40 pounds since my bypass surgery on 10/29/20 (17 weeks post-op). Since my surgery was for GERD and not officially bariatric, I didn't have as much to lose to get to my goal weight. But I want to lose a few pounds more just to give myself some "wiggle" room once I'm past the honeymoon period. I know that weight gain is possible, and very likely probable, after the 1st year. I wasn't really prepared for maintenance after my sleeve surgery in 2014 and gained almost 50 lbs. in the 6 years following surgery. I want to be better prepared to maintain a normal weight since I've been given a second chance to truly change my relationship with food!

    Low BMI and Gastric Sleeve

    Newbie here, I’m getting sleeved on the 22nd of March at a BMI of 35.1 Ive had so many people tell me I’m not “that” fat but I’m sorry, 35.1 is severely obese (even though I may not look “that fat”) and as a doctor I know the risks that come with excess weight. I also know the research around weight loss and that this is my best shot of losing the weight and maintaining it long term. I have tried every diet known to man, been to see countless dietitians, have tried all the medications, I exercise like crazy and all I’ve managed is to stall the weight gain. My hubby and I want to start a family next year and I want to give myself the best opportunity for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby- which means I need a healthy weight. I feel my weight is impacting on my chronic migraines and my asthma, and I’m really hoping that losing the weight and feeling better about myself will be that last thing I need to finally fully recover from years of severe treatment resistant depression. So yes, many reasons why I am choosing to have a sleeve at a “low” BMI. Mostly I just want to be healthy! Thanks for reading...
  7. I’m 16 months post op & 130 lbs down. At Drs goal but want to lose another 15. During my journey experienced many stalls for no reason at all. For 2 MONTHS stuck at 160-161. Back & forth. Then all of a sudden dropped to 155. Did nothing different. Just followed the course. Since this stall happened later in the journey didn’t stress as much as I had in the beginning. Remember. When you stress it raises cortisol which can create weight gain. For beginners I’ve always suggested to take measurements, try on clothes vs always jumping on scale. For me that was very hard habit to break. Used to weigh daily. Finally during losing process I was able to pick the same day each week- Wednesday- & weigh then. When you get to goal you should weigh yourself more frequently so any weight gain can be addressed immediately. I have great program were we had weekly support group meetings & we still continue now with zoom meetings. It’s so important to reach out to others like this so keep doing it. I’ve learned so much by sharing & with our therapist who leads group. Biggest lesson. Stay the course. It works!
  8. Hi all! Just needed a little encouragement. I just got denied (first time) for my VGS because I gained eight pounds during my three-month supervised weight loss. The reason I gained weight is that I was a "lightweight" at 205/5'2 and my nutritionist told me not to lose too much weight or I might be denied. Eight pounds isn't a big deal, I know, and they said I just need to come in and weigh when I have lost that. So now I think I'm going to try to practice the liquid liver-shrinking diet I'll need to do pre-surgery to drop those pounds. It's day one and only breakfast and I am starving, lol. Any tips or tricks to get yourself through the liquid diet? TIA.

    Sugar Free/fake sweeteners drinks

    I was always a water a drinker but I do find it harder to drink now which is weird. It’s the gas in carbonated drinks that is the main concern post bariatric surgery. That and the possibility you’ll switch to the high sugar versions. But with all things on this journey, you have to find what works for you. So if you want to have some soda all you can do is try it & see if it has any adverse affects. Your choice. I gave up sodas years ago. Mainly as the gas gave me terrible hiccups. Never went down the ‘diet’ alternative route for the same reason & because they still feed your craving & desire for sweet. Now there’s info coming out that artificial sweeteners can cause weight gain - body tastes sweet but because there’s no calories to burn it holds on to whatever calories you have eaten. It gets you whichever way you turn! Actually not drinking soda does limit your choices when you go out. I used to have to shrug & say guess I’ll have to have wine - lol!! I have a large mug of green tea every day (400ml) & will pour myself a large glass (400ml) of sparkling water in the morning & let it sit so it goes flat: no gas but the minerally taste remains. I slowly sip on it through out the day in addition to still water. I used to buy a hi protein drinking yogurt which was yummy but a lot of stores don’t stock it anymore - sigh. If I have a gin & tonic, maybe once a month, I stir it frequently to release some of the gas & sip it very slowly.

    Gaining weight

    As I understand it, this may be normal if you have metabolic issues and or use certain medications. This was the case for me. Two to three weeks post op I began gaining after being stalled from the start. My surgeon called me metabolically challenged but insisted I stick with the program. On average I lost less than half a pound weekly. Despite sticking to my program, I repeatedly had weight gain to re loose. After almost a year and a half, I made my personal goal which was about 15lbs below the medical goal. There was no wls "honeymoon" for me. No fast weight loss whatsoever. Hang in there. Try not to be discouraged. It will happen for you too although it may not be as expected.

    6 Simple Ways to Gain Your Weight Back

    Big one in my opinion: Refuse to go to therapy. If I gain, I know I need to go to therapy. I'm not ignorant about the poor choices I'm making....I know this stuff backwards and forwards and I am noticing every ounce of the gain (even if I'm ignoring it.) If I gain...I'm choosing to make poor choices. There's always a reason for being self-destructive. Gotta tackle the reason to make good choices. For me, not going to therapy when I know I really should...is the quickest way to get in trouble. I don't go all the time, but when really hard stuff happens....I'm over being proud and defensive. I just go. And feel better. And make better choices. Boom! I lose weight. For me...weight gain= out of control food addiction being used to medicate emotions. Therapy helps me sort that out. Seems like it should be obvious by now, but it's not. Addiction is sneaky.

    Newbie & 1st stall

    Msjessiruiz, did you have the sleeve? The hunger every 2 hours is common. Don’t start caving into that hunger with a snack. It’s a horrible habit that will lead to weight gain. Trust me. I had the sleeve years ago with the same issue.

    Feeling so unprepared...

    Hello, I'm incredibly new here but i've been reading people's posts. I still considering weight loss surgery and I will most likely do it due to my years of weight gain and loss and my family history of health problems associated with obesity. I just wanted to say hello and tell you that I think you are courageous. You made a really big decision for yourself and from what I understand it is normal to grieve or feel symptoms of depression as you consider the many ways your life has changed. You chose surgery for a reason. I think that finding new ways to celebrate ourselves can be a challenge to anyone. I wish you happiness and the drive to hydrate ; )

    Water intake?

    The 6-8 cups of water a day actually is a recommendation for everyone not just Bariatric patients. We’re pushed to drink water to get us off calorie laden carbonated drinks (there’s research about now that say artificial sweeteners cause weight gain as your body’s response to tasting sweet but not being able to gain the energy benefits so it holds on to any calories you eat.) Because it’s difficult to measure how much fluid we get from water rich fruit & vegetables (& I real on those to meet my goals now too) check the colour of your pee. Look for light straw coloured urine. The darker it is the more concentrated the toxins that are being excreted.
  16. My BMI is lower than 40 but higher than 30. After yo-yo dieting all my life and menopause wreaking more havoc, I have decided to make a permanent change. I tried the gastric balloon and while initially successful, the weight returned. Change of life has meant even more weight gain. My sleeve is scheduled for 2/23. Looking for some similar life experiences for encouragement or lessons learned. Thanks in advance!

    I take Benadryl fairly often (at least once a week) and no side effect of weight gain for me.
  18. Hello sleevers. it has been a while since I have posted anything, I think since my sleeve in 2019. I have been busy with life as i am sure as everyone else has. to make a long story short, being busy with life and the latest life change for everyone in our great world....the pandemic, God willing this passes quickly and we will see the sun shine once again....i have gained weight this passed year after a steady weight, i have gained about 20 lbs but have lost 2 lbs after stopping benadryl and other antihistimine for allergies. I also take anti depresents and have switched due to assuming they were causing weight gain....buprorion which is to have less affect on weight and cymbalta for chronic pain which did decrease appetite decreased my appetite. All of a sudden at the beginning of 2020 my appetite for sweets not food increased, mid you i also started taking anti histimines, not thinking of the hisitmines for the year and after switching medications assuming weight gain increased sweet tooth, it dawned on me about anti hiistimines causing weight gain , i realized this going over my sons medications in which he took cyproheptidine to manage migraines and to increase his appetite due to adhd meds decreasing his appetite. I looked up benadryl as well other antihistamines to see if they cause weight gain, and low and behold they cause an increase in weight gain if taken regulary/ daily for long time use. Has anyone else experienced weight gain by being on antihistamines? BY KNOW MEANS AM I DOCTOR/ MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL, OR ADVISING ANYONE TO STOP TAKING MEDICATIONS. I am just curious to know if anyone has experienced this or even aware. When going to see my provider, this is one medication i forget to tell them about, but will be sure to mention it at my next appointment. I have lost 2 lbs since stopping them last week and switched to nasal as needed. please excuse typos..

    Sleeve to Bypass & hungry?

    I'm seeing my surgeon next week and expecting him to recommend revision to bypass for my weight gain and Gerd. I'm concerned about the hunger some of you are describing, but I'm really concerned about not feeling the restriction. Does that feeling go away after the bypass revision?     Maintenance anxiety

    Same. I have a acceptable 5 lb range. I also weigh myself every day. If I am over the upper limit for 3-4 consecutive days, I cut calories/watch what I eat until I hit my lower limit. I've done this 3 times already in the past 1.5 years. Each time took progressively longer (1 week, 3-4 weeks, 3 months). Mind you, I was also progressively less dedicated each time, lol. This is one of the reasons why I am a daily/regular weigh-er. I have read too many times how others "suddenly", gained weight, that I don't want to not keep an eye on it myself, so I'm not surprised at "sudden" weight gain. P.S. This is not to say that your "acceptable" weight range is permanent...this can change as things change ❤️ (i.e., if I get over my upper limit again too soon, I may up my range by 5 lbs...its not worth it to me to have to keep watching my calories...i'll take the 5lb hit. But so far so good.)

    Losing too much

    If you reeeeaaaaalllllly want to up your calories/gain weight now beyond what are currently able (I personally wouldn't until you are further out and/or in the "Underweight" BMI category", but that's just me), you can look into weight-gain products that body-builders or the elderly use....lots of healthy calories and and very little volume (ie., Creatine or Ensure Plus).

    I’ve been approved for a revision

    I had GERD, Gastritis, Esophagitis and Hiatal Hernia. All GI issues had to be diagnosed by a gastroenterologist. I had an endoscopy with Bravo (pH testing), esophageal manometry, and barium swallow tests completed before Aetna approved my surgery. I had weight gain, but wasn't in the Obese range, so that didn't factor in.

    @SanDiego Girl : Ok, first the disclaimers: Disclaimer 1: I am not a medical professional/nutritionist...just an avid reader/googler. Disclaimer 2: The values below are very generalized and assumes that you have more or less an average metabolism, average functioning insulin regulation, average body fat percentage for your stats, etc. etc. TL;DR: If you want to skip my very long-winded dissertation below, the gist of my message is this: you may want re-evaluate your calorie consumption-activity level combo, cut the sugar, and manage your expectations. Now, your weight today is pretty much what it was when you had your metabolism study, so let's assume you still have a BMR of 1486. This means that if you all you did all day was sit like a statue and breathe, then you would burn 1486 cals for just existing. Your reported exercise can be classified as "Moderately Active" (30-60 mins of sustained elevated heart rate sessions 4-6 times a week). Add this to the regular activity of every day living (i.e., just moving), and your daily caloric needs would be approximately 2150 cals a day to MAINTAIN YOUR WEIGHT. To lose weight, you will need to consume under this amount (or up your activity levels) CALORIES Without knowing exactly what's in your lunch salad, nor what consists of your meat/veggies dinner, nor what amount of each, I calculated the you are probably consuming about 1750 calories (I arbitrarily assigned 300 & 400 for each of lunch and dinner). This means, using the oft-used statistic that a deficit (or gain) of 3500 cal results in a 1lb loss (or gain) of body weight, you theoretically should be losing on average 0.8 lbs a week. This assumes that you NEVER go over 1750 cals a day, and you sustain your current activity level. Based on your original post, it sounds like you aren't. **Note that this is not an exact science, and I personally think 3500=1lb is an overly simplistic assumption, but for the purposes of this post, lets just keep it simple. I digress...** Soooo....if you would like to lose a bit more, a bit faster, try cutting your current cals by a couple hundred (your teams suggestion to aiming for 1200 is sound in this case). Your reported typical daily menu above includes 880 cals of JUST SNACKS. Perhaps try cutting out the Starbucks and 1/2 the nightly Dove chocolates. Doing this alone will save you 245 calories a day. SUGAR Another more controversial suggestion would be to cut all (or drastically reduce) sugar/sweeteners. Not only is sugar poor nutritionally, excess amounts causes spikes in glucose levels, which may to lead insulin resistance: which means the cells in your body aren't as efficient at removing glucose in the blood, so it will store it as fat. Which is weight gain. Further, it is theorized that sugar begets sugar. When you are eating it, you want more. So if you can white knuckle it for a few days and get it out of your system, it is suggested that you will find that your sugar cravings will subside. EXPECTATIONS Lets say you keep your cal level at 1750 & moderate activity levels (and do not deviate from it). This still means you would theoretically still be losing 0.8 lbs a week. This also means you would reach your 180 goal in 50 weeks. Are you ok with this timeline? Can you sustain at most 1750 cals a day for 50 weeks? If you go above this level you will extend that timeline accordingly. Edited to add: remember that this 1750 max cal level will reduce as YOU reduce! You are quite a ways out of surgery and unfortunately don't have the extra tailwind that recently sleeved people have. Its very easy to get frustrated and give up when your hard effort results in what is perceived as slow weight loss. The typical manifestation of this frustration is to eat (and usually its like pizza or cookies and NOT carrots and yogourt). If you can figure out how to deal with the frustration for just longer periods of time (I mean no one actually expects this to be completely solved immediately by sheer will), you will already be a couple steps up in the game.   25. Thanks for the reply. So to clarify, you also GAINED weight for about the first week but beyond the week you ended up losing? It's just something I haven't read anywhere - I've read stagnant/ no change or minimal loss at first. But continuous weight GAIN is not something I've read in anyone else's experiences. If that happened to you and others and then you ended up beginning to lose despite increasing food intake over time, then I would feel a lot more 'normal' about myself right now.
