Seeing my tool in action
mb20mom replied to Gingin33's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Funny you should say it like that, since I keep looking ahead to my surgery as a tool to make me a "normal" eater. I am so excited to just be able to look at food like normal people or skinny people do. I ate what I wanted this week and my surgery is in January. Next year I look forward to being "normal"! -
Working Out is ALL about showing up Daily

Wow. 100 pounds in 11 months. I hope I can do that. Although I think I will just be happy with 100 pounds period. OK well this just motivated me to get off of my behind shortly and go walking. I shoot for 5 days per week, but this week I am at only 4, so I will go get that 5th day. Thanks. -
Thank you so much! I found about people eating a cookie and ended up at the hospital for two weeks. My BP and pulse went sky high! I took a walk and had a nice cry now I am back to normal. I don’t think I’ll ever stray any time soon. My hospital and dietician didn’t arm me with a lot of information so I didn’t even know sugar could hurt your sleeve! I only thought it was a bad choice diet-wise.

I started at 270 and was sleeved on April 3rd. Today I am 228 and it feels unbelievable. Prior to surgery I set a "goal" of being 225 for my son's graduation. Well, that day is tomorrow and I definitely feel like the goal has been achieved. It was such an arbitrary number and to reach is it something I never thought could become my reality. I love that my three sons and daughter celebrate with me. Last weekend I wore a bathing suit and asked my seventeen year old son if he could tell I had lost weight. He looked me up and down then said "your thighs are smaller". For my teenage son to notice was a huge compliment. I have a long way to go but feel like it IS possible which is a new feeling.

I'm just about 8 weeks out from surgery, 25 lbs down, and have had one fill. I find that I do still have to take control, not so much WHAT I eat, but HOW OFTEN I eat. It's really hard to stick with 3 small meals. So yes, I diet to some extent.

what should my protein goal be 1 week post op?
Wires posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't been keeping track of protein grams and just trying to focus on my liquids, getting my meds in and trying some protein shakes. Anyone have a # goal at this stage in the game? -
The Truth Has Set Me Free, But As Gloria Steinem Said.....
Queen of Crop posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
It will piss you off first!!!! Boy was she right.....I was pissed, in denial and very defensive...... Now, after 7 months post-op, I now realize how much in denial I was.....and it feels great to admit that. Easier now than then....I wrote a piece about this in my weekly blog today (click on link below). I think it's something we all need to realize.....that it's hard to admit we have problems when we can't see a way out.....but once we've achieved success.....it all seems so clear.....if you know someone who is struggling with denial, or is coming up with every reason not to do this, please have them read this week's post. Thanks for all the support. -
I have to stress that everyone is different. But my bypass was the first operation I've ever had, and I'm 54. And it ended up being so much easier than I ever imagined. My only real pain, and it was very minimal, was from my drain. And that was well taken care of by my pain pump. I was up and walking within hours of my surgery. The drain was removed the day of discharge. I had arranged to stay with family for a week, as I live alone. I stayed there one night, slept in a bed, didn't need a recliner, and drove myself home the next morning. I honestly felt that good. Had arranged for my dogs to be cared for out of house as I was concerned they would jump on me. Got them back the very next day. Didn't need the at home pain meds. The only downside for me was I was very tired, and I did take a lot of naps. I took a full six weeks off, to heal and adjust. But if I'd been forced to, I could have gone back in a week. Sometimes I wondered if they really operated on me, I felt so good. But at 11 weeks the weight is definitely coming off, so now I'm sure! ???? Hope you both have as easy a time. Good luck!

Hello Everyone, To make a long story short....I had my Realize Band put on in Aug of 2009. Two weeks after my surgery, my husband of 20 years left me and my son. We came home to a note, and we never saw it coming. Needless to say, I filed for divorce. Fast forward, the divorce was ugly, as are most.... and due to the stress of it all, I had to have most of the Fluid in my band removed. The past couple of years have been a whirlwind....I own a business and have also gone back to school full time working on double B.A degrees. I am raising my son and have gotton my life back on track....thanks to my parents. Anyway....I feel I am ready to get back on track with my band and have a fill scheduled for Monday (Jan 2) . My question is ....even though it has been 2 years, does anyone think I can still benefit from the band. I have not lost much weight with my band mostly because I never really got started with it. I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year.....Thanks for reading my post.

"surgery on August 26??? Maybe you meant July 26th.....so I'm guessing you're 3 weeks post surgery. What kind of pain are you having? As far as eating, what have you tried and how much?.....If you're in the soft food stage most folks do well with a scrambled egg....just make it very soft, and you won't be able to eat the whole egg. Most of the time throwing up is caused by eating too much, too fast or the food is not soft enough.....and then there may also be foods that don't agree with you......going back to liquids for a day or two is good, but when you try something again make sure it's just a very small amount. Everyday will get better. Good luck and keep us informed on how you're doing. Lol.. Yes i actually meant July 26 i was half sleep when i wrote it. I've actually was on phase 2 when the throwing up and the pain started I as of yet haven't eaten any soft foods i was still on puree. Hopefully with time all this will go away , i guess it will be all worth it at the end a healthy me... Thanks for your response. Sent from my LGLS770 using the BariatricPal App

Another pair of dress pants bite the dust...
sickofrollercoaster posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Ok folks, I have just had a revelation. I totally misbudgetted for this procedure... I never figured just how much I would be spending in CLOTHING every couple of months!!! BUT AM I COMPLAINING...... NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It truly feels great to have clothing actually fit my body instead of stretching/clinging onto my body for dear life and hoping that no seams rip. I am wearing a pair of size 6 pants that stayed in my closet for well over a year, I had purchased them the last time I started losing weight pre-sleeve in hopes of wearing them one day. Well that day has come and gone and NOT because I put the weight back on!!! I showed the ladies in the office how lose they were and it frightened them, thought I was gonna lose my pants (mental note: do the "too lose for work" check each morning). I still have 13 pounds to lose but I simply do not stress about it anymore. I had a few extra bites of sweets over the weekend and started to beat myself up about it but quickly realized that it was OK to do that, I am in full control finally and I was able to put it down and walk away when I had enough. And today, I am not obsessed about all the candy still lingering in the office. I work out about 2-3 times a week and I enjoy wearing my tight workout clothes. I feel comfortable in the gym now!!! If you are on the fence about this procedure, if you are one that has TRULY TRIED to lose weight, if you are at your breaking point I can tell you that this is the BEST decision I ever made for myself AND my children. HAPPY NEW YEAR AND HAPPY NEW YOU!!!! PS Target has their bathing suits out in the stores now... YIPPEE!!!!! Cancun in 16 days!!! -
I am 2 weeks post op today, and can start pureed foods. I can't even think about it without practically gagging. Has anyone else had this problem? I have to admit that last night I had a small slice of turkey (chewed it until it was pureed in my mouth), and it was fine. This morning I made myself an egg and did the same thing. Is this ok? I just can't stand the thought of pureed stuff. I would almost rather remain on liquids. Am I doing something wrong by eating turkey? I kind of thought it was soft, so it would be easy to chew into a paste. Now I'm wondering if I am doing the wrong thing. Help!

It takes about 6 weeks or so for things to heal up. What I do is measure everything putting only the 2 or 4 ounces on my plate - and then eat with a baby spoon so that I don't eat too fast. This way I know how much I am eating so I can journal it (my dietician wants me to journal daily). I eat until I feel full (most of the time that means I eat until I belch, but tonight it was until I got a tight feeling). If I haven't eaten my entire portion, then I put it in the fridge until my next meal time. I have found some 1/2 cup containers that for storage, as well as some 1ounce and 2 ounce containers too (those are "baby food dishes" - but they don't look like they are for babies - just the outer packaging was). It really helps.

I am just over two weeks out and I have the same issues. I really don't want to measure everything and eat with a baby spoon unless I absolutely have to. I would rather be able to just tell when enough is enough. So, we will see.

Watch the fine print on all loans for your surgery!!!! I had the option of a refinance, home equity loan or capitalonehealthcare. My doc. gave me info on capitalone......you go online and select "cosmetic" to apply. They offer (through some doctors) a temporary 0% = 18 months are 0% if paid off...you have 48 months to pay BUT...if you are not paid off in the first 18 months...you owe 19.99% for ALL/EVERY BIT of the original loan amount!!!!!!! A home equity (if you have a home and equity) is a higher intest rate than a refinance--but usually is shorter term. I hope to pay off the 0% interst loan in the first 18 months...and if I think I can't.......before the 18 months, I'll then do home equityloan to pay the rest of it off!!! That means...I get ZERO INTEREST for probably 17 months, and then pay off anything left from that first loan, with home equity at less than 10% for however much longer I need (don't cut the 18 month deadline too close or it may cost you a bundle). I would rather pay another 18 -19 months at 10%, than all a full 36 months at 19.99% if it takes three years to pay!! YOU may be able to pay it sooner or later than my example?????? If it will take a long time for you to pay, and you don't want the hassel-capitalone also offers a plain " low" interest plan.........they can let you know in minutes if you are accepted. These are only a few ideas...the possibilities are endless...depending on your circumstances.

Congratulations on your progress to date. What is your date? I'm assuming your on day 3 of the pre-op diet, if so I can confirm that today will be the worst. I did 2 weeks of pre-op liquids and day 3 was the worst, day 4 was the turning point for me. You'll do great, keep up a positive attitude and always look forward. Life is soooo awesome for me at a year out. It's truly amazing.

Cross post: Will biotin make my facial hair grow?
Swanton_Bomb replied to Oct517's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am only 2 weeks out, so I have no idea how the post-op hair loss will hit me, but in my previous experience with biotin, it helps your hair grow faster but not thicker. So I have been taking it in the hopes that when I do start to thin the hair lost will grow back more quickly. It will make all hair grow quicker: head hair, facial hair, leg and arm hair, but if you don't have facial hair now it won't start growing and it won't grow faster, but if you remove your hair you may have to do it more often. -
Soft proteins at 3 weeks after surgery, canned tuna or chicken, cottage cheese, low fat cheeses, fat free re-fried beans, 5 weeks, chili, etc. where the beef has been cooked more. I do well with Wendy's but it's enough for 4 meals for me as I still can't eat a lot at a time.

Type "week 3 stall" into the search box in the top right-hand corner. You will have a better idea of why you're not losing right now........ As for milk, there are many different opinions. For myself, I prefer not to have the carbs from milk in my diet as a beverage. I drink coconut milk and almond milk (both unsweeneted). There's not much taste to them, but it does a good job of substituting for milk, and they are both low calorie and low carb. Protein powders mixed well for me with both coconut and almond milk when I was using powders (I drink ready to drink (RTD) shakes now, or eat protein bars). I still eat many dairy products (yum.....cheese and yogurt), so it's not milk that I'm avoiding, as much as the carbs in regular milk (whether it's skim, 1%, 2% or whole).

Ok I have two questions........Do you need to take in a certain amount of calories for continued weight loss? I am 3 weeks out today and haven't lost in about 5 days, in fact I've gained. Figured I've been getting around 400-500 calories a day. My second question is.....Is it ok to mix the protein powder with milk or does it make you take in too many carbs and calories? Thanks for your input!

Why No Water For 1 Hr Before Or After Meals?
sirensiren posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It's my transition week into real food (yay!) and per my surgeons instructions, no Fluid intake 1 hour prior to eating, and no fluid 1 hour after. Why? What is the purpose of this? Is this rule forever? I have my work holiday party coming up, and I find myself negotiating "do I want to eat? Or do I want fluids?", I have Breakfast with a friend every Friday and I'm also worried I'll have a lifetime of choosing between coffee or the eggs each week. Im guessing there's a direct reason why, but I'd love to know why I'm spending hours a day avoiding hydration. -
Just curious!! When I finally got my date I was sooooo excited but, as it gets closer I'm getting really nervous!! I have to have an EGD on Friday!! Then start the 2 week pre op diet on June 15th!! I've been reading all of these threads and some make me even more nervous!! Most make me even more excited!! I'm just a huge ball of emotions!! Lol

Overwhelmed!
notime replied to Changing B4YourEyes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It certainly seems to take up a lot of time and effort. I'm hoping some of it will soon become a routine. One small suggestion--if you aren't already doing this, get a pill case, the kind that has compartments marked with the different days of the week, and use it for your vitamins. I use two of them so I only have to refill once every two weeks. That will help with the question of whether you have taken your vitamins. -
OB wants me to eat 2200 calories a day?!?!
CCCross posted a topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I'm 7 months post-op, lost 90 pounds and about 8 weeks pregnant. My ob requested my calories go up to 2200 a day...I'm barely at 1200 and have gained 10lbs as I'm usually at 900. I'm terrified that I'm going to be right back where I was. I had surgery in Mexico and my surgeon and I don't exactly get along, I prefer not to contact him ever again lol. My pregnancy was a total surprise, actually found out on our honeymoon.
