    5 months out

I'm almost 6 mths out and I've lost 95 but about two months ago I started losing a lot slower, like maybe 5 lbs a month. I started taking Zija Moringa and am losing like 4-5 a week again, I'm no longer losing my hair which is why I started taking it, I no longer am on any of my meds, and I don't have to give myself b12 injections or take vitamins, they are in moringa. I think I needed more nutrician and once I got that it put my body back on track. I was really disappointed that I wouldn't reach that 100 lb mark by 6 mths b,ut I know I'll get there. Google moringa oleifera, it's amazing! I was spending $165 on all my vitamins, supplements, etc. and now I'm spending $90 plus I've saving over $300 on the prescriptions I no longer have to take for my other health problems. If you email ninetynutrients@gmail.com or facebook.com/ninetynutrients and mention that your a bariatric patient, you can get it at wholesale

    I wish I hadn't gotten the band

Thanks for posting this, maestrita. Your thread has provoked an interesting discussion, and I'm glad no one has resorted to mud-slinging (yet). Since I revised (not very happily) to the sleeve, I've often been asked if I regret my initial choice of the band. I admit that my affection for my band colors my response to a question like that. No, I don't regret my band surgery. It's harder for me to answer 3 other common questions. One: Would I recommend the band to pre-ops as eagerly today as I did 6-7 years ago? I'm not sure. The answer depends as much on the person who's asking as it does on me, and there's no such thing as a perfect or one-size-fits-all WLS procedure. Two: Would I choose to revise again (if needed) today? No. Since most of my stomach is gone forever, there's only one other WLS option available to me now: duodenal switch. I'm having enough trouble with micro and macro-nutrient malabsorption with my sleeve. I can't imagine how I'd manage with the DS. Three: Would I recommend bariatric surgery (as a whole, not related to a particular procedure) to an obese person today? I'm just not sure. I guess I would if the person's co-morbidities were so severe that some kind of WLS could be life-saving.

    Omaha, Nebraska?

I'm so sorry you are having such a hard time with the office and staff. This is such an emotional journey, you shouldn't have to dread talking to them or going to them for help! I had my sleeve about 2 months before Dr. Cronk stopped doing surgeries. I loved Dr. Cronk and had the upmost faith in his abilities and fully trusted him and his guidance. I've had great success. The only issue I had with his office was the nutritionists. They were both somewhat rude, always disorganized and not all that helpful. Typically the office only makes you do the supervised diet that is outlined by your insurance company. So it's likely your insurance is requiring more. I had to do 6 months and 3 nutrition visits prior to approval. If you are that unhappy I would suggest moving to a different practice. Do you do monthly weigh ins and progress with your primary care doc? If so that is all documented and your new surgeon will have access to it just the same. You shouldn't have to start back from day 1. I beleive Dr. Anthone is still performing bariatric surgery here in Omaha, just at a private practice.

  7. Wow sounds delicious!! Will try thanks have been racking my brain just bought a bariatric cookbook for kindle so if i find anything good will post. Congrats on the weight loss feels great doesnt it....
  8. Perhaps the surgeon you go to will have a dietician that they recommend who understands bariatric surgery a bit better. again I am not sure how it works w insurance and if you have to use the ones they send you to.
  9. I feel your pain! I gave up my diet coke when I first started the bariatric surgery process and quit cold turkey. It sucked for about 10 days. I did great and didn't have diet coke for over 1 month, no problems. Once I found out it would be another 5-6 months before I would have surgery, I decided to enjoy my diet coke while I could. I start my pre-op diet on 10/28 and will stop my diet coke 10/23. I am not looking forward to my diet coke withdrawal and my carb withdrawal back to back. This will be an interesting 3 weeks leading up to surgery. We can both do this! Just keep your eyes on the prize and tell yourself it is for a healthy you! Hang in there and keep in touch!

    Was it worth it?

People always ask how I have lost so much weight....I tell them that I have had bariatric surgery. They always ask how it is going-I tell them, great, I am only 7 months out and still have 40 lbs to go. Then they ask if I ever had trouble-I tell them that I am lucky and have no problems.
  11. I was sleeved July 2012. Forty pounds ago I past the surgeon's goal. I just said my body will decide. I follow the rules. I eat clean. I train or dance 6 days a week. Well, I just didn't stop losing weight. I feel I've probably been "at goal" for a few months but I still lose at least 2 pounds a month. The plastic surgeon (who works frequently with my bariatric surgeon) told me to stop, increase my calories and I'd be thrilled with my results. I just really have very little fat on my body. (She showing me as she's manipulating my hanging skin.) So I asked her about "how long" she wants me to be stable. She said it's not about how long before I can have surgery, it's about eating more and not losing anymore. Okay. I get it. It's not easy but I will lose a minimum of 5 pounds of skin/fat in surgery and my BMR will triple in recovery!!! Spin will lose weight, too. To triple my BMR results in a really high calorie need. Higher than I can imagine and I eat 1800 calories now. This is why consults are so important. They can really look at YOU and what you need to do.
  12. So, I called my insurance Tuesday to see if they had received the request to approve the surgery and they did not have a record of it. Ok, so I called the Bariatric Coordinator and she resent it with a note "2nd Request" and the next day she received a voicemail from the insurance that I met all criteria but I had to go through nutritional counseling. I was so frustrated! Both she and I had called and there were no pre-requsites only medical necessity. So, she called the insurance company back and they have not returned her call as of this afternoon. I have also reached out to our HR Benefits Director to check on this as both myself and the Bariatric Coordinator were told that there were no pre-requisites. I specifically asked was there anything else needed such as psych eval, nutritional counseling, etc. and they say no...just medical necessity. So, still waiting for an answer. Please keep me in your prayers that this will get cleared up quickly.

    Waiting for Insurance Approval

Well today I had a consult with a surgeon who specializes in bariatrics. I was weighed in at 229 lbs and a height of 5'4, which makes my BMI 39.3. Firstly, I've always been measured at 5'3. The surgeon stated I was a great candidate for the lapband procedure but stated my insurance would not pay because my bmi isn't 40. He stated my insurance requires my BMI to be 40 or 35 (with a co-morbidity) for the past three years. He did not see what could be done to help me qualify nor did he request to retrieve my medical records from my pcp or other physicians. I immediately contacted my insurance company and they stated they do not have to have pre authorization, but there's a possibility they may request info in the future and if they find it was not medically necessary, they would withdraw the benefit. My insurance company gave me the info for a doctor who has a 98% approval rate. I do not have any comorbidites other than asthma, very infrequent menstrual cycles, and infrequent high blood pressure. I spoke with the staff at the doctor's office my insurance company referred me to and she was very optimistic about being able to help get me approved. I prayed before I went in the doctor's office asking God to reveal the best option to me, I can't help but wonder if I'm going against God's answer to my prayer by seeking approval through another physician. Having this surgery is very important to me. It's something I have desired to do for the past three years. I really want this. I know of a lady who has the sleeve and was denied twice before she received approval. How often do people get approved after being denied. I wasn't denied by my insurance company. The doctor simply didn't try seek approval from my insurance. The moment the calculated my BMI and saw that it was 40, they were pushing me to finance the procedure. Advice anyone. What should I do? How do I get my insurance to pay?
  14. OhSoNique, I had called the insurance to see what the requirements were and was told only "medical necessity." I specifically asked during the phone call were there any requirements such as psych eval, weight counseling, nutritional counseling and was told that medical necessity was the only requirement. The Bariatric Coordinator for my surgeon had also verified (by phone) what were the requirements and she was told "medical necessity" was the only requirement. So, that was the information we started with and then they came up with the nutritionist thing. Another girl at my work who had the band had to have emergency gallbladder surgery and the surgeon unfastened her band because it had slipped. Evidently, once they slip the likelihood of the band slipping again is much greater. She is looking to do a sleeve. When she had the band surgery she only had to have a sleep study. Same insurance now wants her to go to nutritionist before they will approve the surgery. It appears the rules change at their discretion.
  15. Just found a link to this story on my google news feed. Thought it was a great read and very much agree with what it's saying. The best line is "Surgery is, by far, the most effective tool in managing or reversing Type 2 diabetes. Just as doctors wouldn't wait until a patient has advanced-stage cancer to treat their disease, patients shouldn't have to wait until they are severely obese to undergo surgery," Brethauer said. https://www.wfmz.com/features/life-lessons/scientists-want-to-change-criteria-for-bariatric-surgery-eligibility/1100520796 Thought I'd share with the group
  16. Hello, I'm 6 days post-op from the sleeve and outside of terrible pain from my big incision. Normal, from what I've read. Anyway, I'm sure that I'm not the only one who has watched people in our lives go through the dark side of WLS with unfortunate life changing experiences like transfer addiction. Seeing this happen to someone close to me really discouraged me for a long time from taking the leap. I finally got past that and while I don't regret doing it, I'm determined to not fall into that pattern. My first goal is to find a good therapist that has experience with bariatric patients. If anyone has recommendations or advice, I'd love to use this spot as a safe and productive place to discuss. Take care all! Sent from my SM-S908U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. Maybe you should consider finding another nutritionist. I have prepared to bariatric surgery three times, including this time -- I am definitely doing it this time, just have a couple insurance hoops and I jump thru the last hoop on Nov 7 and then I'll get a surgery date. But I have been to lots of nutrition classes -- required by the different surgery centers -- and met many nutritionists -- and this is the first time I heard a nutritionist tell a newly post op not to use Protein shakes. I suspesct that it a bias of your nutritionist and not a science-based piece of advice. Like DLCoggin said: you need protein and this post op period doesn't last forever. There is a wide range in quality of Protein powder and shakes. My goodness, I don't think I could get enough protein in my egg-size stomach post-op if I had to eat only eggs, meat, fish. Some proteinpowders are loaded with bad chemicals, poor sugars or sugar substitutes and many are against all protein powder. I use 100% organic usda certified whole whey protein and you can add to the natural flavor to anything and get in a lot of protein with every swallow. 100% whole whey protein organic is good for everyone. And the post op phase doesn't last. In Seattle and now in East Bay of San Francisco Bay area, every bariatric medical person I have talked to says only liquids for first couple weeks -- how the heck can you get any protein in if you are on all liquid? I expect I will want to stay on Liquid Protein longer than they advise because I will be anxious about how my stomach will handle real food. Your nutritionist has good intentions but it seems to me she has a bias about protein supplements. At least ask her for her philosophy or ask your doc. And if you are suicidal, as others have said, get some help. And hang in. It gets better. I know it because everything always does.
  18. Thank you Dave. You are very knowledgable with actual scientific fact and not "goggled" so called "facts". You are also post op (as am I almost 9 years) which makes your posts of more value for actual life after Bariatric surgery.

    I am stuck.

Really I think you need to see a qualified Bariatric nutritionist. Congratulations on losing the 102 lbs. that is fantastic! We can all tell you what we do, or don't do but we all have different stats. Like heights, exercise regimes, jobs, even where we live can make a difference etc. There are a lot of threads about plateaus and you can search for them and read it all but none of it will be as succinct as a nutritionist that you get on with and trust. I personally have not read about any sleeve patient that can get in 1500 cals per day in the first year or so, but that is not to say there are none around. There are also a lot of books, many of which you can download, which will help with post surgery dietary requirements. I am a bit concerned about the sugar question, do you mean carbs found in fruit and veges or do you mean sugar added? If you mean sugar added the answer is none full stop. I am sure you will get more answers but I hope this helps in the meantime.
  20. Have you seriously considered getting some counseling / therapy around your impulsive eating? This is clearly a behavior you want to gain control over. That doesn't generally happen because people "encourage" you to do better. You should find new ways to recognize and respond to eating triggers in your life. Based on my counseling experience (since June 2014) with a counselor who works with bariatric patients a lot, this could be helpful to you. Very best to you.

    Calcium Citrate

Before I could swallow whole pills I was using Bariatric Advantage Calcium Citrate Lozenges. Now I just bought a two pack bottle from Costco for dirt cheap! Comparable to Citracal. One pill 2x per day should work, maybe 3 sometimes if I'm getting those darn leg cramps.
  22. Sleeved 6-4. Two day hospitalization surrounded by NICE folks with lots of experience in bariatrics. I am a lucky one, no nausea at all. Some discomfort and will continue to take pain Rx. Working to get fluids and proteins up in the next 2 weeks. All in all doing well!
  23. Hi.....I'm in Alsip on the South side. On 12/23/2013, had my surgery done at the Loyola University Medical Center on maywood, over by Brookfield Zoo. My surgeon was Dr. Bipan Chand. He was at the Cleveland Clinic from 2003-2012, being instrumental in the development of their bariatric program. He came to Loyola in 2012 and developed their bariatric program. He also teaches bariatric, gastro-intestinal, and robotic surgery at Loyola and performs some services for Edward Hines V A Hospital as well. I was totally pleased with his staff and kind manner and had a textbook recovery. Wishing you an uncomplicated surgery and quick recovery.
  24. If you started out with a not-so-good bariatric surgeon who somehow deceived you into choosing the band (I'd like to hear more about how he did that), there's no guarantee that you'd have better success with the bypass. It's great that you've found a better surgeon. I hope the rest of your WLS journey goes more smoohly now.

    Question For You Bandsters!!

Depends on which BCBS plan you have and in what state the plan is administered. My BCBS is DC based and so I had to do a six month diet, which I had already been working on. Decided to get banded in April 2011. First appointment with bariatric surgeon May 2011. Banded July 5. Took that long between insurance approval process, finishing 6 month diet and going through my doctor's rigorous pre-op testing process.
