    filled too tight?

Laura please be super careful. I had a fill on November 11th and kept thinking things would get better. Well they didn't, I now know that being to tight caused my aspiration pneumonia. I have had the band since May of 2004 and never had any acid reflux or heartburn. Since my fill in Nov I had it constantly. I was taking all kinds of antacids. Eating things on the mushy side lots of soups and ice cream all the stuff we really shouldn't. If our band is right we should be able to eat pretty normal, but much less. Just be really careful, I know I wanted my fill to smooth out. I had been stuck on my weight loss and was really hoping that a new fill would just kick it in again. But in reality I just needed to be a better bandster. Trust me it is not worth getting sick, I am just now since my unfil last week starting to feel better. I think you will know, I think I did I was just hoping that it would get better. Be careful!!!!!!

    Food Question

KIM, congrats on your upcoming BEING BANDED! I have no regrets.. I had lobster for the first time since being banded over the weekend! it went down fine.. although the snowcrab was easier to eat.. It sure was good.. as far as carbonated drinks-- my doc says they can stretch out the portion above the band, that's not good.. what's the point of being banded? Now, my sister has been banded for 2.5 years... She just started drinking carbonated drinks and does fine w/it... but she has already lost all of her weight (102 lbs) She looks great! She doesn't drink them every day.. just on occassion. I'm 6 mos post op and not really wanting to try them, b/c i know that I will want them more & more.. good luck w/ that and keep us posted

I go to the pool a lot and started with the classes and learned which exercises worked for me. Some instructors are better than others and you can actually do your own thing if you want to spot exercise. It feels so good and I push for a half hour and then go to the treadmill or bicycle for another half hour. Seems the more weight I lose the more my back and neck need attention and the pool execises seem to strengthen my core muscles. Works for me.

    Hi there

Hi everyone. Just stumbled upon the site today and have taken great comfort in it. I have only recently decided to have surgery and am going for my first consultation today with my surgeon - Dr Manaceau in Advanced Cosmetic Surgery, Dublin...anybody any feedback on him?? I have been putting on weight for around eight years and am now a whopping 280lbs - my ideal weight is between 160 and 170lbs so it's a big challenge but the decision has been made to tackle the problem and 2007 is going to be my year. Two of my friends have had the surgery and are very happy with the decisions they have made. While I have seen first-hand that things have not always been easy for them post-op, they have never regretted the decisions they made to go for the operation. Hopefully when 2008 rolls in I'll be one of you who is giving positive feedback to someone else who is afraid of his/her life of what lies ahead :phanvan Looking forward to checking in with you all in the coming weeks and months.

    Sleep Apnea & Anasthesia

Please don't worry about this- during surgery, you will be intubated, so there is no chance that you will stop breathing due to sleep apnea since the tube will keep your throat open. You will be asked to bring your CPAP to the hospital, and once you are recovery, with your history of severe sleep apnea, they will most likely put you on your CPAP at once. Or they might monitor your vitals and if your oxygen levels falls below a certain amount, they will put your CPAP on. I have mild sleep apnea which turns severe during REM sleep. I've been on CPAP for about 5 years now. I brought my CPAP to the hospital, but never ended up needing it, as my oxygen levels never fell below 95%. But it was right there next to me in my room in case I needed it. Also, just a heads up, pretty much immediately once I got home after surgery, I started waking up with an incredibly dry mouth. I just couldn't keep my mouth shut during sleep, when it had never been a problem before. Turns out that my CPAP pressure needed to come way down. I hadn't lost much weight at that point, so I'm not sure why it happened so suddenly, but from reading this board it seems like it happens to a lot of people.

    How much?

I've heard alot of different things. The most consistant thing I've heard is 800, but really, your doc would give you the best input here. I eat between 700 and 1200 per day... depending on the level of activity. I have started lifting weights and feel the need to "recover" some days. I think varying caloric intake can help with stalls too. Some people seem to really love the low carb route... I don't feel well when I restrict carbs so I eat some complex carbs like steel cut oatmeal and sweet potatos. I really think though... if you don't want to count every ounce.... if you just follow the rule of Protein first...then veggies, you'll do fine. good luck stacey

    Where to begin?

honeyg317 sure is overwhelming you have already started - and you are headed on the road to a healthier, happier, longer life everything you've learned so far..from your NUT/doc.............listen, listen, listen, then "obey" all the rules!!!!! practice stopping drinking about 15 minutes before you eat never drinking with your meal not drinking for about 45 minutes after you eat drinking at least 64 oz of H20 a day practice eating slowly chewing thoroughly to pieces little bites putting utensils down between bites continue to stay excited/later anxious nervous prior to WLS - good emotions do your exercises per doc lose the necessary 10 lbs really important............. realize you must be patient through your weight loss - people lose at different rates, and some/most/ALL people will have stalls do what you are supposed to do.........the weight can't help but come off good luck with pending surgery speedy recovery kathy God Grant Me Patience, Just Hurry Up About It

    I need a fill!

Unfortunately, it is time for a fill. I dont enjoy going for fills, I have to drive 7 hours to New Jersey :cursing: Ohwell, it is time. I have not lost weight in a while and I can eat much more than I used to. it will be my 3rd fill so I know what to expect, it's just a long trip. In the mean time, I have to exercise to keep the weight loss going if my band is not tight. Wish me luck!

When I started looking into surgery I just got on the internet and did a Google search for "lapband surgery", "lapband diary", "lapband blog", etc. I loved reading the online diaries and blogs of people who had the surgery. On You Tube I did a search for "lapband" and found videos of people talking about their surgery, and even videos of the surgery being performed. I learned a LOT that way. Also just read a variety of posts on this forum. Some quick answers to your questions.... It's up to your doctor what kind of pre-op testing needs to be done. It's not unusual to have to have a sleep study to test for sleep apnea, sometimes a visit to a cardiologist, a visit to a psychiatrist... bloodwork, various other tests depending on your doctor, your age, your medical history, and your general state of health. Many doctors put their patients on a liquid diet for a week or two before surgery. This is to lose weight quickly to shrink your liver, which helps make surgery go better. The length of time from your first appointment to surgery depends on your insurance company. It goes a lot faster if you are self-pay. I had my first appointment 2 weeks after I attended a lapband information seminar, and my surgery was 2 weeks later because I was self-pay. For some people, it can take 6 months or even a year. Good luck! This is a great place to come for information but also do your own research online, it helps a lot.
  13. I wanted to introduce myself - My name is Amy and I am 33 years old. I am married to a wonderful man and have been for 12 years. We have two great boys who are 5 and 7 years old. I am a labor and delivery nurse and I truly do LOVE my job. Nothing like being a part of the miracle of birth, it is such an privilage to be able to be there for the families! I have currently have the lapband unfilled inside of me. I had surgery to have to placed in Sept of 2011 so not quite a year. I had the surgery and was very hopefully it would be the tool I needed to get my weight off. It went okay for the first few months but after that nothing but problems with pain and not getting restriction. My band has been unfilled for 3 months now. I was just going to get the band out and no do the conversion to the sleeve. I had found out once the band is in insurance doesn’t really like to take it out. After much thought and researching I had decided to convert to the sleeve. My insurance has aproved the conversion to the sleeve!! My surgery will be July 16th. I have to be at the hospital at 5am for a 7:30am surgery. I will be staying 2 nights in the hospital. My band will be coming out and I will be sleeved. I would be lieing if I said I wasn’t nervous. I am but also excited. I chose the band orginnaly because it wasn’t as “permanent” as the sleeve. Once part of your stomach is gone… its gone.. ! I want to be healthier.. I need to lose about 115 lbs which seems just overwhelming. My boys deserve a mommy who has the energy to run around with them. I deserve to be healthier and have more energy for what life has in store for me. I am so thankful I have a hubby who is so supportive, a family who is always willing to help and friends who I can count on. I look forward to getting to know you all as we proceed forward on this healthy lifetsyle we are choosing!!! Amy

    Low Carb Anyone?

I only count my calories and my protien. Both of those things have been in good range for me, and I've been losing (after having been stuck for a LONG time). But you lost so fast initially, that your body may just need to take a moment and readjust. If you don't take bodily measurements, I recommend it, because so often I've seen folks that get stuck for a while after having dropped alot of weight, and they find that their body is changing shape all over the place, and then they start losing again. Good luck!

    Low Carb Anyone?

I am following the South Beach Diet; it makes the most sense to me and allows healthy carbs in stage 2, which is the long term weight loss stage. My doctor loves the South Beach, he said most health professionals who go on a diet use it. With the band to help with portion control, it's a great way to eat healthy and stay on track with weight loss. I also read recently that plateau's are a natural part of every diet and to expect periods of 1-4 weeks when no weight is lost. The writer claims this is a period of time when the body is looking after other things, liver cleansing etc., and to just continue with your plan and eventually the weight loss will continue. She cautions that people who have a lot to lose 100+ pounds, should expect at least 4-5 plateau periods.

    I need some help!

Everyone has given you some great advice; I only have one thing to add. Make sure you do some resistance training i.e. weight training. When we try to lose weight our bodies will preferentially burn muscle because it is more metabolically active than fat. Your body is fighting to keep the weight on. But if you lose muscle your metabolism is lowered and you have to eat even less to lose fat. So get your protein and build some muscle to rev up your metabolism.

    Dietician Messed Me Up

Yep! It is frustrating. I feel like I'm trying to make up for 3 months of weight loss in 2 weeks. I agree about eating light. All I've eaten today is a 1/2 of a pickle. 3 more hours until the moment of truth.
  18. Hi everyone, My story in a nutshell is I started my process in October 2009 and everything is complete. I expected to have my surgery in May 2010 however my health insurance put up a road block to make me wait until January 2011. I have a follow up with my surgeon on January 4th and they will submit it back through insurance at that point and I should hear back within that week. I have no other road blocks they can put up so it should be a sure thing! I've been waiting and counting the days down until now and it's FINALLY HERE! I've been mentally prepared and managed to maintain my weight and drop 5 additional lbs since my last appointment in May. I've heard maintaining your goal weight is one of the hardest things after everything is said and done. I'm ready to get the show on the road!! :-)

    I'm new <3

Hi, My first formal appointment after the orientation was November 12th and I am scheduled for January 30thBe aware that some insurance companies make you be on a physician monitored 6 month weight loss journey before you can even start the process. Good luck

Good Evening, During my doctor appointment this past Monday, which lead to setting up surgery for a hernia, my doctor also set me up with an appointment with another doctor to talk about Lap Band surgery. He first mention the Gastric by-pass surgery, but I told him I did not really want to do something that could not be reversed. At least the Lap Band could be removed. At least this is my understanding at this time. The reason I now have the hernia, is due to having a urstomy (urinary by pass) over 7 years ago. I dont want to have another surgery, to 'fix' one problem that just creates another one down the road. Reducing my weight would help the hernia surgery to be more successful and to keep it from occurring again. Plus help with the other pesky health problems I have. I came to the forums to read and learn about the Lap Band surgery. Good health to us all.
  21. It truly really depends on your insurance. My insurance wouldn't even consider it without a BMI of 40 or over or BMI 35-40 with a severe co morbidity. I also had to provide them with a 2 year weight history as well as a 6 month weight management program along with all the tests and other visits. I am finally getting banded Wednesday after 9 long months of trying to get qualified. If you click on my link my story is the only blog I have done so far. I wanted this so bad I was willing to do whatever it took and just never gave up on it. Good luck to you and please keep us posted!!!

    Working It Out

OK, so I have been hitting the gym hard since a month before my surgery and loving it. About 4 weeks ago I was really sick and didn't go to the gym at all that week. The next week I hurt my foot and couldn't even wear shoes, the third week I went on vacation and the fourth week I just didn't feel like going. It is really killing me inside, how can it take 30 days to form a habit but just moments to break one! Well I finally got back into gear this week by doing weight training at home and going to Zumba. I'm just hoping I can get back that passion for hitting the gym again and putting in a hard workout!

    Tired of feeling sick!!!

This thread is 8 months old, but if you're still reading this, I'd be interested to know if you had a psychiatric evaluation before being banded. The American Institute of Gastric Banding and True Results recommends that all patients are not only mentally fit for surgery, but are capable of longterm commitment to weight-loss and the related consequences.
  24. I recently read in 1 forum that lap band is a slow and steady weight loss as compared to sleeve...is it so... some of us take long to start off..while others have amazing weight loss from the first month... age and exercise, metabolic rate and food habits of course must be playing a major part in this. I am trying my best but my weight is not moving in the last 2 months...this is my fourth month..... does anyone have a similar story.... [
  25. That sounds reasonable enough to me. It makes perfect sense! Oh, and congrats on the wonderful weight loss. I started my pre-op journey on 11/8 weighing 343 lbs. I am now at 311 lbs. and can't wait to be under 300 lbs.!!
