    need help with mushy foods

I started the mushy food stage today, mostly mashed potatoes, applesauce, pureed meats (no red meat) cottage cheese. But the food still needs to me really mushy. Stage 3 is when I get to have Beans and all the other goodies (1/2 cup max). Can anyone tell me what they are doing for the mushy phase that won't get me chewed out by my nut. I know she is trying to protect me but 4 to 6 weeks of mushy food is going to really suck without some variety. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Mark
  2. Hi everyone, I am super new to this forum and the process of weight loss surgery. I went to two different facilities in Atlanta, GA. True Results and Johns Creek Surgery. Both seemed great, and both are telling me that I don't have any co-morbidities. I am 5'4 and weigh 230 lbs. They said my BMI is not high enough to start the nutritional process if I use my insurance. I must wait until I get around 237 or 240 lbs. Is this right? So, in the meantime, I am exercising 5 days a week and now I'm attempting to eat healthy. Can I go on a high Protein diet while I wait to start the nutritional appointments? And, I've been exercising for 4 weeks straight and the scale is consistently going up since the end of last year. I'm a severe sweet eater and I have been working to control these urges by eating meat, eggs, Protein shakes, and fruit. Your help is appreciated...???? 4. i am assuming that it would take overeating on a regular basis to stretch the pouch..is that right? a little background... i am 1 month 1 week out from surgery. we are currently in the process of selling our house and buying another. i am a comfort eater. so i have been incredibly stressed and recognized last night i was eating more then i should. i think i probably have been a few other times. now i am freakin out that i may have stretched my pouch or ruined something. please help! suggestions? advice? oh, i have in this bad time also taken a few sips of something while eating. i know, i know, i know.... and one more thing...i find myself drinkin more then just sips. i will drink several swallows at once. i try not to, but sometimes i just dont think about it until i am done and then its "oh crap". it never hurts or anything, so i am tellin myself i am ok. yes??? no???? thanks everyone!

    Hunger hit

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes. After surgery, the Weight Loss phase is very short. I transitioned into the Maintenance phase at around 7 months. So you need to adhere to the program requirements that you were given in order to maximize your weight loss.

    Approved

Help why am I having to wait 6 weeks for a surgery Date I'm already Approved?? Sent from my Z959 using the BariatricPal App
  7. So I've been really lucky to have healed really well from my surgery with absolutely no complications. I never had gas pain, nausea or anything else that I've heard so many people suffer from after their surgeries. That being said, I DON'T HAVE ANY RESTRICTION EITHER! If I let myself, I could keep eating and eating, and I could probably guzzle as much Water as I wanted to. I am still losing about a pound a week, but I'm afraid that will stop when I go back to a normal diet. Anyway, anyone else in Bandster Hell? From these forums I've read it's pretty common, but I am wondering if there are any fellow August Bandits out there who are going through the same thing as me? I can't wait for my first fill! Hopefully I'll feel at least a little restriction.

    Officially in Bandster Hell

Today is my 1 week anniversary of getting my band. I think I'm doing OK. I find after about 60 - 90 minutes my belly begins to growl but if I have a little bit of liquid, even Water, it feels better. I'm just making sure I get at least 80g of protien every day. I don't think we're supposed to have any restriction yet. Reading through some other posts it appears that it takes many people 2-3 fills until they really feel any restriction. I find I'm getting about 600 - 700 calories a day on the liquid diet. (My doc wants me on that for 3 weeks before mushies.) Does that seem right to you folks?

    Hunger hit

You really should stick with your plan. Have you tried something savory like broth (strained soup)? You could add unflavored protein to it to help you feel better. I think 4 weeks is a long time for fluids only but before going off plan - talk to your Team. It could be head hunger or acid (be sure to take a PPI). Stay strong!

    Christmas Guilt!

I am on liquids for another 2 weeks. Christmas Eve I had about a cup of roasted red pepper soup and Christmas Day I had some very whipped mashed potatoes that I further thinned with milk. Not terribly exciting and slightly depressing but I got through it.Phew!
  11. I go to the chriropractor now, I have no problems and get everything done that I did before. I recenly had a car accident and I have to go 3 times a week to help with the whiplash. I am now back to once a few weeks and doing great! GOOD LUCK!

    Just Got Banded On Monday!

Yes I did a week of the preop diet and lost only 2 pounds. Now I am 4 days post op. I misunderstood the instruction because he hand wrote days 1-4 clear liquids so I assumed I started purée today. Well I ate a bowl of cream of wheat and felt fine. I called the dietician and he said to stay on full liquids until Monday. I have minimal swelling I guess since I'm tolerating everything just fine.

    New Here, 8 Yrs Post-Op

You can ask me anything Mami, I'm not one of those that may get offended. Honesty is always best. After time, your pouch may stretch. This could be due to a number of factors. I do believe in my case that it has a lot to do with feeling comfortable, too comfortable, and not using my tool as it should be used. I love carbs as many people do and I know that I've made the wrong choices in not eating my protein FIRST. And if you begin to eat "slider foods" (foods that slide right out of your pouch and into your intestines) you don't get that full feeling you are supposed to feel, like when you eat lean protein. Also, I had completely given up soda until 2 yrs ago when I thought diet coke was okay because it was DIET. The thing that I've just learned through my reading this week is that the carbonation too can stretch your pouch. As I said, my weight was consistently stable for almost 6 yrs. I've seen so many people that have gained back more than 50% of what they lost and statistics show the average regain is 50% over a 5-10 year span. I am not going to allow myself to be in that 50%. I'm just glad I remembered that my body doesn't work like the average persons. And that weight loss plans such as Weight Watchers and the like, will not work for me. Too many fruits, veggies, carbs and just too much food in general. Another thing I'm guilty of is drinking WITH my meals. After time, you think I can take a sip here and there and then you're having a cup. When you drink with your meal, two things happen...you're either filling your pouch not leaving room for healthy foods and you get hungry sooner or you are washing the food out of your pouch...thus you eat more because you don't have the full feeling...it all depends on the food and the person. Sorry this response is so long, the things I've remembered this week just keep coming back. I guess that's actually a GOOD THING.

    Surgery date is set!

I don't know where this nurse came from I'm 3.5 months post op the pain was absolutely not horrific some discomfort for a few days kinda like a muscle pull mostly bothers when getting up and down or bending over the gas pain is worse then the surgical incisions was nauseas and bloated for about three days nothing intolerable though
  16. Erinjb, I think so because after surgery you are working your way back to solid foods. This is the hardest thing I have done I know because I have not cheated and I have five more days to go. I want this bad enough to do the right thing. This coming from a person who eats something sweet daily. Food has been my drug but these three days have given me insight that I am strong enough to say NO! to my old bad habits and know they are not worth my happiness when I reach my goal. I wish you all the best on this journey Erinjb.

    Post Op Protein Question

sip and sip and sip some more the first week or so, you will be swollen inside..and hel is 100% right, your dr is the one who should explain the post op instructions if unsure.

  20. I'd ask your physical therapist or surgeon. each program seems to be slightly different, but I see a lot of people starting to do more strenuous exercises at the 4-6 week mark.

    Normal?

It is normal to me because I recently went through it too. I actually gained weight the day after the surgery, 4lbs I think it was. I was not happy at all and then couldn't loose any for almost two weeks. Then to my surprise the last two weeks it has been coming off on a good basis. I was banded June 20th. When I had complained to the doctors office they told me I was suppose to concentrate on healing not loosing weight in the beginning. Don't sweat it, it will come off. Good luck and congrats! Colleen

    Insurance Fear?

From reading through various threads, I had come to think that having insurance cover WLS meant that they would almost for certain require a 3-6 month mandated nutrition monitoring program. Is thinking this incorrect? I am currently in the process of switching over to BCBS of Texas, and while I was planning on being self-pay with the hopes BCBS would cover part of the cost on the finding of a hiatal hernia.... Is it possible that they could cover the entire surgery without requiring a 6 month stall? I've planned the surgery with a timeline in place between school semesters and my final Pre-Op appointment is supposed to be on July 31st where I make my full payment... There have been unforseen holdups with getting the insurance switched over but they for sure have all of my paperwork now and I'm just waiting on receiving my member information so I can give it to the surgeon's office.. I'm concerned that there is just not much time left now -less than a month until the surgery date- but is there at least a chance it could be not only approved in time but not require the extra stuff? The cash price is not cheap, but as far as my health and getting my life back on track, even if insurance could cover the procedure I can't afford to wait another six months beyond what I already have. This isn't about impatience any longer. My mental and physical preparations have been made and I think I'd completely break down beyond a therapist's help if this was put off. Any hope?

Someone suggested an eye mask and earplugs so we might actually get some rest in the noisy hospital. I will be there three days so I bought some
