    Slow losers

I'm in the same boat as you. I should of learned my lesson weighing myself every day when I had the sleeve, and after the revision to bypass I was doing well just once or twice a week. Now, I am into the same routine of weighing myself every day and it is so frustrating. From surgery on May 30th, to today June 26th, almost a month post op I only lost 10 pounds. I feel like so many other are losing at a faster rate. I know its not good to compare, but some days I feel helpless like this will be another failed surgery =/ so your not alone!
  2. The first thing to do is to verify whether this loss requirement is that of the insurance company, or of the surgeon's program. Six month diets are fairly common for insurance companies to require, though the specific loss requirement is less common - that is more typical of some surgical programs, irrespective insurance requirements. Check with your insurance company - call them or find their policy bulletin on their website, which will spell out the specifics of their requirements. If indeed it is an insurance requirement, you might have to continue, or the requirement may be negotiated or appealed - your surgeon's insurance coordinator can help with that. If it is a requirement of your surgeon's practice, that can also be negotiated as this is not a standard requirement within the industry (you can go to another practice that doesn't have such requirements). In either event, talk to your surgeon's team - including whatever dieticians or therapists they may have on staff or referral to see if you can get to the root of the problem. Some programs may just reject you for "not trying" or being "non-compliant" while others will help craft a solution to your problem. You may have a greater than average metabolic problem that is inhibiting your weight loss, and this may point to the need for a stronger surgery than the bypass or sleeve - the DS is a stronger metabolic tool than the others and may be worth looking into, though your doc's practice may not offer it. It's better to investigate it now and understand it than get into a bypass that may not be strong enough and have to revise to it later - that's a real complicated revision that few can perform. Good luck in working this out....

    regretting my sleeve

@Skinnygirl04 I'm getting a revision. I can tell you that my initial surgeon had tendency to push for the stages sooner than other patients. The warning signs are your body's way of telling you ENOUGH. In my case, my nose would run and my heart would beat fast...sounds strange but they are effects with some people. In regards to soup as more of a puree, the thickened ones I did the sip shots out of a medicine cup like the water after your surgery. It worked and usually after 3 to 4 sips, it was game over and my nose would run. Hope this helps.

    refilling after years

I also had my band put in in 2010. After a year (exactly a year a week) and abysmal weight loss (@25lbs) my doctor discovered my tubing had kinked. He said he needed to go back in to fix it but it happened right after the bliss insurance expired (it is only for 12 months) and I was a cash purchase becuase my insurance doesn’t cover it. He could some how massage my abdominal wall and manipulate tube and get it to fill, but it was always a chance it wouldn’t work. And he wouldn’t fill too much because he was worried he wouldn’t be able to go in and let some out if the kink got worse. Then one day I noticed I would choke/vomit up everything solid, mushy and liquid. I even tried just sucking on ice cubes to stay hydrated. Nothing worked. Ended up at emergency room, doctor was called and greatly reduced band fill. Told me to get upper gi to check for damage and see him in three weeks. He forgot to leave script, came in mail about week later. When I called to schedule my appointment for upper gi a few days later (I was in no hurry since he wouldn’t refill for at least 6 weeks) I was told there was a problem with the script and to call doctor back for correction. When I called back I found out my surgeon had left for a tour with doctors w/o borders to Sudan. WTH. Went to a new recommended doc for a fill in a couple months after and she couldn’t fill it because of the kink. so here I am 8 years later and ready to start again with fills not even knowing if it will work. I called a new surgeon to make an appointment yesterday. I of course haven’t told them about the kinks or my upper gi appointment. That never came to pass. I would prefer a revision, but Medicare will not pay for revision unless there is a problem. Best case scenario is the kink worked it’s self out, it with additional weight gain I doubt it. Or next best for me is there is a band problem and Medicare will pay for revision. It’s kind of sad that my second best option is hoping for problems. Sorry for the length. I just know this is one group of people who understand the frustration. Sorry this was so long.

    Anyone in Massachusetts????

I had a band installed back in 2011. Lost about 70ish from that but then things just kinda... stopped. Revised to the Bypass March 21st and I'm down 58lbs or so since March 2nd, 117ish total.
  7. I had LapBand surgery when I was 18 years old. I only lost about 40 pounds. I had severe nausea with it the first 3 months. I had acid reflux with it. I had mine for 4 years before I HAD to have it removed. Early 2013 I found out my band slipped. I had having acid reflux so bad that month due to the slippage. I believe one thing to have ththe band to slip is when you have something stuck and then having to puke. Doing that a lot can cause it to slip. Will when I had revision surgery in 2013, I had to go back 2 days later for an emergency surgery due to an abscess in my stomach which caused me to lose my band. I think if that hadn't happened, I more than likely would have been at my goal weight. I'm at my highest weight ever. I'm 17 pounds heavier than when I started going for appointments to get the lapband surgery! The band is definitely a frustrating tool, I wouldn't get it again, but the thing I loved about it was that it is reversible. Although, I'm strongly thinking about something permanent and something that won't cause acid reflux and my surgeon told me that Gastric Bypass with be great for me. I'm so scared, but I'm going to make an appointment with my surgeon to go over it
  8. Banded in 2011... lost 70ish lbs. Lots of small issues, nothing major or caused by the band. But it just wasn't working as advertised. 2 of the largest manufacturers, no longer make them. Lots of surgeons, won't install them any longer. The band works for some, but it was by and large over hyped and under performed. Now for the caution. Outside of all the other horror stories listed... Mine was a time bomb and I didn't even know it. So, no real issues, no slippage, no erosion, all imaging, scans, and scopes were good. Zero issues. Well, until they went to remove it when I was revised to Bypass. My band was 100% completely encapsulated in scar tissue. It took my surgical team more than 3 times longer to remove than it should have and increased my surgery time from 2-3 hours... to 6+. I can't say I really "Hated" the band... but there are just far too many problems and complications that just keep coming up. I didn't want to go permanent either, nor did I want to have my guts rearranged. I can say however that I'm beyond glad I got the bypass done. Who knows what would have happened if I left the band in there. I feel so much better now, I really wish I had gotten the bypass when I originally got the band. But my fear of commitment ended up costing me 2 surgeries and years of "dealing" with band. Personally, I would take the fact that revision rates continue to climb, that installation rates continue to drop and that 2 major manufactures, both pulled out of the business as a sign that... the band, might not be the best option, even if it is the one that doesn't require things to be "changed" inside.
  9. I would not recommend the Omega Loop bypass or MGB or OAGB for someone with severe GERD and/or a Nissen as the risk of bile reflux is too high. I had MGB 14 months ago and now have bile reflux, which has accelerated esophageal damage, along with acid reflux. I will be revising to an RNY gastric bypass this summer.

    refilling after years

@Awkward customer I was banded back in 2011. I had no major *issues*, other than getting stuck on stuff, or the fact that leafy greens hurt. No slippage, no erosion, etc. I lost 70, then gained a little back here and there. I had stopped going to my surgeon, except for when I really needed an adjustment to my fill for whatever reason. But I got to a point where, I was tired of things not working right or having other issues where I shouldn't be having issues. So I dragged myself back into my surgeons office and told her I was a failure. I was surprised when I found out that not only were my outcomes normal, but that 2 of the main manufacturers of the band, no longer make them due to how over hyped and under performing the bands were. We discussed my revision options. I was revised to RYN March 21st. Best decision I've ever made... Truly wish I went bypass in 2011 and didn't mess with the band. When my surgeon was taking my band out, it was 100% completely encapsulated in scar tissue, it took them more than 3 times longer than it should have to get the band out! So glad I did!

    Sweet Drinks?

Have you tried tea with honey instead of sugar? I've noticed natural sugars are much easier on my system post revision than unnatural sugars. Have you tried any of the calorie free sweeteners? Juice is allowed, just have to watch the calories, added sugars, etc. Calorie free drinks are where you really want to be looking. There are plenty of sweet tasting calorie free drink mixes, etc that you can use.
  12. I had the option to revise from band to sleeve or bypass. I wasn't keen on having my intestines rearranged either, but to be honest, I couldn't tell you with any certainty if they have been or not... I know they have... but I have literally no sensation of them being rearranged. I wish I went bypass back in 2011.

    refilling after years

Dear all, I had a lapband in 2010, and it did massively kickstart my weightloss and I did get all the way from 364 lbs to 180 lbs. I remember that I was not really explained the refill process and did not know I would have no restriction following the operation, and it took about 5 fills to have restriction. At one point, even yoghurts were difficult to drink quickly. At some points I had to unfill slightly when waterbrash (like reflux, but just water) stopped me sleeping, but I think that was due to too much fluid in the band. I didn't enjoy the process last time - I didn't like vomiting so much, and maybe the band only did half my weightloss and then I started having things to eat I knew would not be caught by the band, i.e. less solid food (ice cream, soup, etc) and calorie-counting. So the second half of my weightloss was pure diet -- but the band did get me over the hump. Now after years of being unfilled, I have allowed myself to go back up to 280 lbs. There are reasons/excuses for this. I had a broken arm all last year and couldn't go to the gym. Finally today I've got an appointment for a refill. As long as it works, I can take the parts of the process I don't like (like vomiting or like suddenly realising you've eaten too much or having a problem when visiting people in their house and finding you're having to spew up in the toilet and the hosts know). And at least this time I know what to expect. So I've read a lot of posts by people who have had to revise the surgery, but I'm looking forward to my refill today and hoping it will work for at least a year to put me right. I can hardly believe what has happened to this forum. I remember before it was bariatricpal and most people were on LapBands and there was a generally positive vibe.

4 days out from band to ds and feeling down

Your tummy went through major surgery. Of course your're going to feel sore and tight. Allow yourself time to mend. This is not a lapband. Your doctor must have explained how you would be feeling post-op?? It takes at least a week to be able to sip water. The first few days are hard. Surgery is never easy. I'm one year post-op revision from the lap band to a DS and have lost 86 percent of my weight and still working on it, but I knew it wouldn't be easy from the start.
  15. I’m 6days postop of of gastric sleeve revision to bypass. Tolerating fluids and protein shakes. Since yesterday I have had this weird sharp pain on lower left abdomen. It’s morr pronounced when standing and especially walking. Anyone else having pain? My postop is Tuesday

    What length is your bypass?

How long since your surgery that you’re below goal weight? I had surgery 10wks ago with the 7ft Bypass and dwn 30lbs plus the 11lbs from pre-op so 40lb also I was a sleeve to mgb revision so not a 1st wls surgery. I’m very content with the results though I can say I’ve dumped 4 times and was miserable, it takes 2 hours for me to throw up each time. I ate too fast but not bad greasy or sugary food. My stomach is finicky some days I know I’ll be on liquids because I’m nauseated all day. Learning each day

    June RNY buddies?

Scheduled for my revision from lap band to RNY June 26. Started my liquid diet June 5. 2 more days!
  18. Well, if you have a lap band, you can always have revision surgery in the future, IF needed. 80% of the failed lap bands are due to folks not following correct eating habits, or not doing follow up visits. I personally know two folks who had revisions because they were not losing weight, and they are still failing after having a sleeve. I work hard to ensure my band works like the tool it was intended to be. At my age, the doctor felt the band was the best solution for me. And, they have be go back for follow ups at least once every six months to make sure there are no problems. If you don't have insurance, that can be costly. Few doctors want to deal with past patients, and that is another reason they avoid the band. I'd opt for a sleeve today, but I am happy with the band.

    Endoscopy- is it a must-do?

My EGD was nothing. I’d never had surgery before so I was terrified of being put under. Ha! I was in and out in 15 minutes! I remember NOTHING after they said something about we’re giving you something that will relax you. I was clean so I was good for the sleeve which I was sooo glad about. I absolutely did not want the bypass. Yes, my surgeon requires it. Plus, when I went in for surgery, he simply uses the endoscope as the bougie. So my tummy is quite a bit smaller than most surgeons create. It’s a 32. A pretty tight 32. Here’s a nifty little comparison of bougie sizes. After I had such an amazing and easy time with the EGD, I never panicked about surgery. Not one bit! I have terrible anxiety so I guess knowing I would be ok being put under made the actual surgery a breeze. I’d say if your insurance covers it, go for it. Even though I did not want the bypass, I’d rather have had the EGD come back with the results that told my team I needed the bypass than have to go through a revision surgery later on.

    Mini Gastric Bypass

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Have you had an EGD endoscopy to see if you’re experiencing bile reflux, which is a complication risk of MGB and could result in unintended weight loss? Your weight is still in the normal BMI range. Do you not feel well, are your labs suboptimal, or is it just you don’t like how you look? I had an MGB in April 2017 and am on the low side of the normal BMI range for my height. I’m not as concerned as you with my lower weight because my arthritis and debilitating joint pain is MUCH improved, I feel great (energy-wise), and my lab work is all normal. HOWEVER, over the last 6 months I have developed bile reflux and now suffer from stomach pain and nausea, as well as Barrett’s esophagus. Due to this, I will be revising to an RNY this summer to correct the bile reflux issue.

Checking in with all the february peeps

I am coming up on 4 months Post op and I am so happy. The Scale this morning said 200.5 I am so excited to think I will be under 200 pounds again. It has been 16 years since I was under 200 pounds. I am not there yet but so confident in the sleeve surgery, after a failed lap band. I had a rough day the other day, was picking at food all day long and made a spaghetti bolognese for dinner. My baby 4 ounce stomach had just about enough of my bad behavior and let me know. for all you lap band to sleeve revisions who had no problem vomiting daily like I did. This was so different. It was torture. and I am so Happy it was. With the lap band if something got stuck, just vomit. I feel like I will never do that again after what it was like to puke up spaghetti bolognese. lesson learned. Would love to hear from the February peeps the good bad and ugly. 53.2 pounds down. Not even 4 months out.

    June RNY buddies?

Hey we had surgery same day! I was a sleeve revision to bypass. Hope you are feeling well!
  23. I had an MGB in Tijuana with low BMI and am now below goal weight. Yeah! But I recently developed bile reflux, which is quite serious, so I will be revising to an RNY next month. If I had to do it all over again, I would go to Dr. Esquerra at Mexicali Bariatric Center for an RNY. I encourage you to contact him for a consult to hear what he recommends for you post-ESG. Even if you chose another MX surgeon, it is helpful to talk to 2-3 to ensure you make the right choice of procedure for you and your situation. Please remember that WLS is just a tool. It is a great way to reset your metabolic rate but all of the surgeries can be eaten around, leading to regain. You need to get your head on straight for long term success; you may find therapy a useful tool to help you address your emotional eating tendencies. Good luck.

    Another surgery?

I'm going for a revision @polican. I had my VSG October of 2012. Surgery morning weigh in was 253. I lost 98 lbs. I kept it off for the latter part of 4 years. I had my son July of 2016 and only gained about 20 lbs during the pregnancy. But then I was switched on 3 different medications for anxiety and depression. Effexor ER before pregnancy, Wellbutrin during pregnancy and then Prozac and finally Lexapro after. Sadly, the Prozac made me gain almost 70 lbs. within 10 months time. I decided it was time to get a revision with the consent of my surgeon and my primary care physician. July 25th is my surgery date. I'm currently enrolled in my 3 month program with the weight management center and my hospital. Sometimes life challenges us and we fail but there is always light at the end of the tunnel. If you think having a revision is right for you, do it! Make sure you have the support and reach out to them when you are having a tough time. It's something I didn't do the first time around. Talk to the patients and doctors. I'm the type of person that thinks I can handle my problems on my own but that's exactly what got me to where I am today! Whatever decision you make, know that you are not alone! Good luck!

    Another surgery?

Everyone will about regain about 20% of their weight back after 2 years regardless gastric sleeve or RNY... However RNY has better weight loss results and longer lasting results as the food travels shorter and doesnt stays within your body long enough. RNY is considered the mecca of weight loss procedures. It also says in your link "Most patients report 50 to 60 percent EWL within two years and then subsequent weight regain. These are the patients who seem to benefit most from a revision procedure to eliminate the weight regain" Now for the poster, her potential end result is 189 lb per gastric sleeve calculator and this is with a 20% chance, a 50% chance is 210 after 18 months. If she has another procedure, her starting point will be at her present weight and she will be able to break into the 150's, and hopefully maintain it with some work and dedication. I hands down agree with you that forever dieting is something we will need. Its a must. It's unavoidable for us. I also know from sitting in nutrition class with people over 325 + that weight loss surgery sometimes requires 2 surgeries.
