How is weight loss for people over 50?

I haven't really had any NSV. When I first got banded and lost 22 lbs from 4 weeks of liquids, I pulled out a pair of pants that had been tight on me. I started wearing those and I can still wear them. Nobody has noticed that I have lost weight. I have only lost 5 lbs in the last 3 months, so I can see why nobody has noticed.

    Do your feet really shrink?

100 pounds down and my feet are still the same length...I've been wearing a size 10 since 6th grade so I don't think they'll get shorter at this point! My feet are a bit narrower and my instep is not as full so I can more easily fit into shoes... I used to be a "wide" width in many shoes.. I went to the shoe store last week to get fitted for some new athletic shoes.... and he came out with a MEDIUM WIDTH!!!! After I bought the shoes, I wandered over to the Dansko section and tried on a pair of danskos in medium width and they fit perfectly.... SO AWESOME because in the past, I was limited to only the plain shoes because those were the only ones that were offered in wide.. But now I can wear any cute pattern I want... I ordered a patent leather floral design... YAY for NSVs!

Gone for Good Club - April 2006

I wondered what NSVs were - read about them but never knew - thanks! and yes - I am thrilled my diabetes is well under control - now for the cholesterol - I worry about the fact that it has gone up even with my medication doubled -- my dad died of heart attack during the night all alone - and I don't want that to happen to me! the doctor thinks maybe it is just heredity and lack of ability to exercise - any suggestions anyone? the cholesterol has got to go down! thanks everyone - it is so encouraging here!

    Bras!

Congrats on your NSV!!! Sadly I'm having a hard time accepting the shrinking. Before surgery I was a 40DDD. Today I was professionally measured for the first time since surgery at a 38B or C depending on the bra. I cried. I knew they would shrink but at 5 weeks post op I wasn't thinking it would be this fast. Honestly my chest was the ONE thing I liked about myself when I was overweight. It was the one thing I knew I had that I could flaunt and made me feel sexy. Regardless of all the fat. But today felt like someone ripped my "sexy security blanket" from me. I know I'll get over it. I'm grateful for my weight loss and being healthy but it's hard to let go of the one part of me that I loved and made me feel good about myself for so long. Learning to love my new body has been a lot harder than I thought. It's so foreign to me.
  12. I think its the best NSV out of all the possible NSV's! Congratulations. Perhaps I'm biased becuase I didnt need to ditch medications, or become mobile or independent again or anything really serious as a result of my weight. WLS surgery for me was a health decision yes, but more of a preventative one and was VERY much a cosmetic surgery for me. I wanted to look better and feel better about myself. The thrill of being able to wear whatever the heck I want has never worn off, and I doubt it ever will.

Congrats on the % lost and on the absolutely wonderful NSV you had when your hubby sent you flowers with that comment. That's one to keep for the books  We know you will and Onederland will be here in no time!

    Late June Sleeve Buddies?

I finally lost a whole pound over the weekend but unfortunately, it found me again We also went to dinner at friends' home and I grazed/ate over a few hours...got in a LOT of calories and way too many carbs. They didn't know I'd had surgery so it was a teeny bit awkward. I told them about it and they were super supportive but I didn't prepare well for being in a situation where we sat and chatted, nibbling on food and drinking wine. Not as much exercise as I should get, either, so not my best weekend. I'm back on track this week! I did have a lovely NSV, I had ordered some denim capris from Talbots end of season sale in a 12 and a 10...I wore the 12s this weekend! I haven't been out of plus sizes in forever, so that was great! Focusing on THAT and getting over my food stupidity is what I'm planning for the coming week. @@magoosmom I'm so happy to hear that you're seeing good results on the scale. I don't envy you younger women who have to contend with your cycles while doing this weight loss thing...I've been menopausal for about 18 mos (although the hormone dumps have caused some bleeding ) and it's nice to not have to deal with the water weight gain. @@suzzzzz That's tragic about the popsicles...I've been eating them too and had no idea they have that many carbs. May have to reevaluate them, but they've kept me sane at times! I hear you about the shot metabolism...all those years of losing/gaining/losing have destroyed mine.

I'm thinking I need another fill too. Haven't had a fill since March - but I've been losing slowly. I love my band. Just got back from vacation and lost 1/2 pound. That NEVER happened before. For exercise, all I did was play golf, walk on the beach and play tennis (that was the biggy -And I beat my husband!!!!!) Did I say, I love my band? Starting boot camp again next week. Yeah Lovely - you rock! Congrats on being so close to goal. Oh, and I had a NSV last week. I bought a new dress for a party (pre-band I was a size 20). First of all, when I went to try on dresses, I stood in the dressing room AFRAID to try on "regular" size clothing.:w00t: I haven't been shopping in so many years, chosing to buy from catalogs where I'm annoymous. Anyway, the sales lady brought in size 16's and I thought they would never work! But it did - they all fit easily!!:sneaky: Then, because they didn't have the dress I wanted in my size, it was ordered from another store. In the meantime, the sales person had a size 14 shipped to me (I don't know why because I needed the 16). Anway the 14 arrived and it fits! I'm constantly amazed!

NSV= Non-scale victory. Like fitting into a smaller size or being able to walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded.

How are you paying for your surgery?

bitteroldhag, sounds like we have the same payment plan. it will take years but like you, I feel it's already been worth the $. I feel great! And I have the energy to bake those cakes.I stayed up around the clock the week before Christmas..catching little 20 minute catnaps for 3 days. No way could I have done this before losing this 46 pounds. The nice thing too is that I have absolutely no desire to cheat while I'm cooking all these sweets. not even a taste. Margon9, I wish I had known about your doc. I could have saved about 6K. Does he do free fills? Mine does for a year. And enterprise01..I applaud you for taking care of three of Gods' creatures. Your cats and YOURSELF!!! I'm glad that you have that heart. So many would just put the cat down and be free of it.And you deserve this surgery. We all do. No-one wants to be overweight and we deserve to feel good. I had a NSV this morning. I bought some boots the week before Christmas and they wouldn't zip all the way up. This morning they did!!! yeah!!! I've wanted to wear nice boots for years!!!

    Two More NSV's

I had a really good day today. It's not often I sincerely feel like saying that but the days are coming closer and closer together now that I can walk without pain and I don't get so fatigued and my general health is just 100% better. My two new NSV's??? Well, this morning I saw that we were gonna have high 70's today, so I decided to wear a dress and guess what!! I could put on my smallest pantyhose WITHOUT having to sit down to put them on and I DIDN'T need a tow-truck to help pull them over my hips OR pick me up off the floor. I did not suffer any over-exertion either. Used to, it was aerobic activity to put on pantyhose IF I would attempt it all. Secondly, I wore my 'real people' shoes today, with 3.5 inch heels. The shoes are the MUDD brand with a pretty wide, solid heel and a funky square toe, so no danger of really falling off or hurting myself, but when I first bought them it hurt me to try to wear them very long (I have no arch). Today, no pain. It felt SO good to wear something besides flats. I felt very professional and attractive. My boss even commented on how great I looked!

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

NSV - went shopping last night for some cool weather clothes..Heading up NORTH, Rochester, NY for the weekend.. I amazed myself. I was able to buy a size "M" for my sweat pants... I can't remember the last time I could say that.. and a size "L" for my tops.. I have lots of trouble with my midsection and getting things to fit..too much excess skin. but thiis shopping trip was a big ego lift for me!!

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Denise - It's so hard to dress our age  some stuff is too young - some stuff too old but with the weight loss we still want to look cute. I tend to dress really classic traditional - assessorising(sp) I have a nice gold & diamond heart necklace that I were 24/7 and my earrings (3 holes 2 have diamonds and I wear gold hoops in the bottom) and I wear a tennis bracelet & gold rope like bracelet - but here is the non traditional side I have my nose pierced and wear a little diamond and a sun tattoo on my ankle - but I won't wear legging and a long top - i just think it's too young for a 53 yr Cathy I LOVE absolutely LOVE being able to cross my legs - i do it 24/7 now - that was the BEST NSV I'm 5'4 and my pants were 18's - tops 22/24 (hate tight clothes - well that has changed too - I no longer have the rolls of back fat) - the smallest I had in my closet was 14's - now I have 10's 1 pair of 8's and even a 6 (total fluke but they say 6 so i bought them) Truly I am a solid 10 in pants - Large tops - I am very aware of the bra fat...

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Hi, gang. I read posts, but don't post much myself. But I wanted to share a NSV! My hubby and I just returned from a week long vacation to Colorado. We flew and I was anxious to see if I could fit in the seat and seat belt. Some of you may have experienced the embarrassment of the seat belt not fastening and having to summon the flight attendant and ask for an extender. I hated to fly for that reason, plus I would always have to lift the arm rest so that I could spread out into the seat of the passenger next to me. Well, my NSV is that I didn't have to lift the arm rest and was able to buckle the seat belt and even pull it in an inch or so. Also, the tray table came down without resting at an angle on my stomach. My hubby is large too, so we never sit next to each other, we gamble on having a smaller person next to us. So I had to jump up and go tell him about my NSV and of course explain what a non-scale victory means. He was happy for me. I had lost 58 pounds when we left for vacation and only gained a half pound or so which is good for not being able to eat at regular times and always having to eat out! :tt1:

    June 2007 Bandsters

missy GREAT NSV!! Don't focus on how big you are but that you are losing every day!! We are all at a different spot, but all working at the same goal!! Keep up the great work!! portion control I agree with all your posts. this week I have been eating over the 1 cup or 1/2 cup. I am worried that I am stretching my pouch. In most cases I don't feel full, but there are times I do feel restriction. Sometimes I stop eating others I don't. Now, I am still eating less than before and do stop, but I feel that I should feel full sooner. I have a doc appointment on Monday. I am on the fence for a fill, the reason being is I do feel restriction, should I just feel that and stop eating, regardless if I feel full! But that is so hard. the band is to tell me I am full. I am confused about it. I read so many that get a fill and can't eat anything and PB. I dont' want that either. sorry for rambling!!! stef I wish I had a suggestion for you! I have not been on the scale since I reached 199. I am afraid I gained:paranoid. I will wait until Monday!!
  25. i'm getting my second fill tomorrow. i am expecting to get 1cc but hoping it will be more because i cant even tell if i have had surgery. the only time i feel restricted/stuck is when i take a big bite of rice or fry bread. My portions are close to what i was eating pre-op. i'm making better choices now, but around Xmas and traveling was much harder. have had some NSVs but in terms of weight loss i am stuck at where i was 2 wks post op.
