    knee pain WORSE after surgery????

Hi Michelle, I had the same diagnosis as you. I think they called it (and I'm going to butcher the spelling here) chondromalasia. I think that word just means generalized knee pain. But the orthopedic surgeon sent me to physical therapy first. The physical therapist showed me how my knee cap was not tracking in the right groove any more. It VERY common in women because of the angle at which the thigh bone meets the knee. Anyway, she expalined that basically, there is the quadricept (one of the biggest, toughest, strongest muscles in the body) pulling on the outside edge of your kneecap. While the only thing counter balancing it, to keep the knee cap in line, is this teeny tiny skinny little muscle called the VMO pulling on the inner edge. I went to physical therapy three times per week for six or eight weeks and they (and I) worked on strengthening my VMO. At the end of the sessions, it was like magic. Pain GONE. And I mean COMPLETELY!!! See if you can look into some physical therapy before you opt for surgery. I don't know why the weight loss would make it worse, but it can't hurt to ask. Good luck. LizzyD

    Dating after Lap Band

Hello Everyone! I have a couple of questions about dating life, after/during the band (and weight loss): 1.) Do you tell your date (probably not on the 1st date) about your band? 2.) Have you ever had a bad response from a date to the lap band (not interested after finding out)? 3.) Sorry if this one is too X-rated, but does the port get in the way during sex (uncomfortable?, feel the port?)? I'm being banded on 7/24/08 and I've been thinking of many questions! Thanks all!

    Some Days....

I was wondering if anybody else has had the same experience as I have. Most days, I can manage most foods if I eat in the right proportion and chew properly. Other days, SOUP will almost give me a hard stop! I was wondering if anybody else has had days like this, and what causes it. I am absolutely thrilled with my lap band. Even though the days I describe can be a bit annoying, I am so glad to have this tool to assist me in my weight loss.
  5. I'm excited to get my second fill this afternoon. But, I'm feeling a little anxious about it as well. My weight loss has stalled a bit - i'm ready to begin the journey of losing this weight in earnest. But, I also like having my band that restricts the food intake without the terrible side affects - pbs, getting stuck, etc. Fortunately, I haven't experienced any of these things yet but I'm afraid that this second fill may actually take me to the next level where I'll really have to confront my food issues and slow down my eating. While I know the benefit will be weight loss, the fear of losing normalcy in my life is taking over a bit right now.
  6. Hi, Pickles; Sorry you are having problems. But, it does happen. You know, it’s interesting you have been able to lose weight without restriction. It does happen, though, for several reasons. One is the Placebo effect. Just the knowledge that you have the device inside of you gives you a resolve to try a little harder. It works the other way sometimes, too. People will have the band and think IT will do all the work and they end up eating more than they did before. Also, it might be that you are getting a very subtle restriction that you cannot feel, really, but it is sending the signals to your brain that you are “full” or “fullER”. In addition, you might be one of those few that have the “Hunger abatement” mechanism in action that the band theoretically provides, but does not often materialize. AND, we certainly cannot rule out good old fashioned hard work on your part! There are people who go through their Band experience with virtually no restriction or very little restriction and lose weight. As I have said before, the band experience is VERY individual….people rarely experience it the same as anyone else. So, HOWEVER you are doing it, congratulations! As far as the leakage, well, that does happen. But I was a little confused by your comment suggesting that you will have to pay for the repair. Will your insurance Pay for it, or are you self-pay? And, because it was not your fault, I would suggest that you have a very strong case for having the Surgeon absorb some if not all of the expense of the re-install. And, if it was a faulty band then the Manufacturer might bear some of the responsibility. These things are very tricky, and there is a lot of “pass-the-buck” between doctors and the other parties involved. But, based on what you have said here, I would really push HARD for the surgeon or the Band Manufacturer to foot the bill for at least some of this. Do you have insurance? Please let us know what happens with this….I would think that this would be of great interest to those people having similar problems. And congratulations on your loss thus far…..keep up the great work! S.

    recipe book?

My nutritionist recommended "Eating Well after Weight loss Surgery" by Patt Levine & Michele Bontempo-Saray. I really like it - recipes are tasty and show exactly what you should eat for each procedure (RNY, Sleeve etc) and for each week post-op.

    Worked Up

Have you already decided on lapband or are you still doing research? I think it's impossible to totally control those fears of surgery, but you can help minimize their effect by not letting yourself ruminate on every disconcerting circumstance. Everyone has a different surgery experience, but mine was that after I got onto the table, they put some merciful drug in my IV and I was out. So relaxed just before as well. I don't even remember any breathing tubes, etc. coming near me. If you do go through with this, ask your doctor about the exact process and share your fears so they might be able to make you as comfy as possible. As for the skin issue, this is also going to vary per individual. Some of the factors are age and how quickly the pounds come off. But, ask most people around here and I think you'll find that they'd much rather have floppy skin and opt for another surgery rather than have the weight. Good luck and I hope you can get all your questions answered!
  9. Hi everyone! I'm 22 and ready for this change. My mom is actually one week post op and so I'm getting to see what it might be like for me even though I know it's different for everyone. Even though it's nice to get to see what it is like post op, it's kind of frustrating because I feel like I've been through the whole process with her but she's the one getting the benefits right now and I have to "repeat" the process. We were trying to do it together but it was difficult because I lived out of town for school. I'm worried that insurance struggles will postpone my surgery even more because besides the excessive weight I don't have any other medical issues and I'm not quite heavy enough to qualify for coverage without another medical condition. Basically - I was wondering if you could give me advice for the first steps of this process. Clearly I've been waiting for awhile to get this done and do need to be patient but I'm just so ready to be on the other side! Any advice you can give me through any step would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Is Bariatric Marketing Out of Control?

You know, you are 100% right. When I started researching this, I ran across ad after ad that showed some lovely model frolicking somewhere with nary a scar or stretchmark over her entire 110 lb body. They all made me roll my eyes. It took a lot to dig through the crap ads to get to the information I needed. I also got a lot of media about lap banding and one thing I really appreciated was Realize obviously had people who either had lost a lot of weight (one girl playing tenis in the brochure obviously has saggy skin) or larger people (of course, as I say this, there is a man in a swimsuit in the brochure that they forgot to photoshop his bellybutton back on, LOL). That was nice to see. I knew the model was fake and I was never going to look like her.

    Anyone else cold?

Me too, I've felt the cold more intensely since losing weight. The first areas I lost fat in were my arms and legs. Now the cold feels like it just cuts right through the skin on my arms. I have to wear long johns when the temp drops down into the 50's. Pre-surgery, my problem was staying cool enough, now it's almost the opposite. The upside is, I'm going to have lower utility bills since I won't need the AC as much to survive the Texas summer!

    Too skinny anyone?

I also had this same concern. Having done plenty of research, speaking with my surgeon, and reading on these boards, I became comfortable that it wouldn't be an issue. I have a fair way to go to goal yet, only sleeved 12 days ago, but I was aneorexic as a teenager and initially my family were terrified I am going to go too far again. Knowing that this was a HEALTHY option for me and not just a super quick method of weight loss was just as important as anything else. Some people do go below their target, but I am sure that given time to adjust the amount which is eaten and the type of calories consumed, this can be rectified. I have already warned my family that I may go a little underweight until I get used to how much I should be eating to maintain my goal. A little bit of trial and error. I would also try to sway you away from the band, having read plenty of complications and seeing how many revisions there are here. I just don't believe it is a good option for anyone. Best of luck with whatever you decide. xx
  13. I've been looking through the forum and have not found the answer to my question. HAs anyone expierenced losing too much weight from the VSG? I'm weighing between the band and the sleeve. With the band I feel I will have control over my weight loss, But with the VSG I'm scared I might not, even though it's probaly the best option for me. :confused1:

    My 5 minute workout!;)

Aww thanks! It's hard trying to loose weight on you own. I went swimming today and I just couldn't get the courage up to go back in the gym. But I did get 2 hours of swimming in. I guess I will try again tomorrow.
  15. I am nearly 9 months out from surgery and have lost about 75 lbs. I still have about 25 lbs. to go to get to my final goal weight, but it has been tough sledding the past two months (last month I only lost 3 lbs!). I am eating about 1,200 calories a day and exercising 5 days a week (primarily cardio ... walk/jog intervals or Zumba class or exercise DVDs). I have definitely stepped up the intensity and duration of my workouts the past month. My eating could be better -- I have been working to cut out Snacks. But, I am starting to worry that I will never get to goal. So, for those of you who are are 10+ months out from surgery, there must have been a point in time where your bod just stopped losing weight. Has anyone experienced that where the weight loss has stopped well short of the goal? How did you deal with that?
  16. My insurance covered everything. I just had to pay my co-pays. You should call your insurance company and ask questions. Ask why they don't cover psych evaluations. I would think they would. Also ASK about weight loss surgery and if Lap-Band is covered. You should ask all this before you go too far and find out later it is not covered. Some insurances won't cover it. Best to check before hand.
  17. Anyone else headed to TJ for Dr Ortiz this week? I was sleeved by him last November but have not lost any weight. Because I had a revision from a band he thinks I had too much scar tissue to get a small enough sleeve. So, I am going back. He said this is ony the 2nd time he has had this problem. and, NO cost to me.
  18. This has been a long relationship with plenty of ups and downs along the way. Love/Hate comes to mind. Before surgery I composed a list of goals and getting rid of the CPAP is on there twice. Being hooked up to a device drove me nuts at times, but over the years I also gained a certain amount of security from it. The white noise of the swooshing air helped get me back to sleep during my frequent wake-ups in the night but a lot of the time it was the machine itself waking me up (not being strapped on properly, the nose pillows coming loose, etc.). We went away for three nights and it was wonderful not having to pack up my machine and set it all up in the hotel room. I gave it a few more days as an experiment once home, and while I plan to keep it in a closet somewhere just in case I am delighted to have it off of my bedside table. Yippee! Oh, and I looked up my measurements to check: I have lost 2 inches off of my neck. That's a lot, for a neck. My waist? This one is kind of a shocker: 8 inches. Wow! No more Mrs. Winnie-the-Pooh and no more CPAP.

I have lost so far 105 lbs in 1 yr.l have no problems with the band in the last 3 months I lost 4 lbs and I usually average 9 or 10 lbs...I haven't gained any weight during the holidays "mind control ",I know I lost about 4 inches in size..I have no restrictions with my band and I'm not hungry and I continue the same routine every time..I'm glad I'm over the mind hungry phase...I am not a gym person but I did bike riding and the treadmill until November, our friend winter is here...What else can I do or should do???
  21. Hi Chow I am doing very well thank you. I am on summer vacation so I am really trying to work out and exercise every single day. I strongly recommend taking measurements because although I have not lost very much weight this past month, I have lost several inches! I have also had a plastics consult for a tummy tuck and my arms, but I think I'm going to wait to get under 200 pounds. I'm really hoping I can get my insurance pay for the tummy tuck. Hope you are doing well.
  22. First of all, congrats!!! My surgery is in 2 days, so I can't speak from experience--yet--but I think that I would focus on making exercise a lifelong habit (finding out which physical activities I enjoy the most and discovering new ones) because I think that regular exercise is a key component to maintaining the weight loss. I also know that when I exercise regularly I tend to eat healthier because for whatever reasons my body craves healthier foods. Plus, there's the added benefit that your body will look even nicer when it's toned. Besides the fitness stuff, I would want to find the right balance in my diet to maintain my weight loss and beyond that, just enjoy life!

    Update time

So I was sleeved on June 24th and I am very happy with where I am at and the progress am now 102 lbs from my highest weight which was 2 weeks before surgery and now 85 lbs since surgery Today I went to the gym and did 4 miles in 52 minutes on the treadmill feel more energy and so much better I do travel a lot so getting all my Protein in on the road is at times a challenge, but I am still learning and doing better and as I said all along, I was not going to go crazy on this strict food plan - i wanted to be realistic and practical, smart and yet not deny those things that i like but thanks to the tool really control my portions. so, I do eat a halloween size pack of Peanut M&Ms every now and then - so yes all 6-7 of them little candies - the old days it would been a whole pack I have had a bratwurst (no bun) at a football game I have had pizza ( mostly just the toppings and very little of the crust and its a thin crust) - if i have 2 slices of toppings that is a lot - compared to used to eating a WHOLE pie I do have the Skinny Cow 100 cal fudgesicle most nights when at home sometimes for Breakfast I have 2 slices of Cracker Barrel Cheeses (individually packaged so very nice) with a 100 cal Pack of Goldfish (nut said crackers were good to help with nausue on occasion from Chewable Multi-Vitamens and my biggest bad thing - I will drink diet soda - i get the small can 7 1/2 oz and drink slowly - used to drink 6-10 full 12 oz cans a day I do drink through a straw in public and yes at a restaurant i get soda and small sips when eating, but i have never emptied a glass So i am not perfect, but I am doing well and making progress, i could see how i could go backwards, but the portion controls is huge and I am eating so so so much better and working out so so so much more Used to wear a size 50-52 w pants and now i am doing 44-46 shirts were a 5XL and now 3Xls are almost to big Goodwill got 4 huge bags of clothes!!

    Fibromyalgia?

I take Celebrex for arthritis, my wife had severe bouts of FM when we met, we got it under control for a long time, now that she has gained weight and not lost very much I notice more frequent flare ups but with rest and meds it's still manageable, I think there is a definite correlation between weight, activity and FM, she recently got a part time job and has lost some weight and the flare ups are subsiding, but still takes meds.....

    Fibromyalgia?

I have fibromyalgia, and take Cymbalta for help with symptom relief. It helps but I certainly still have my share of ups and downs. I'm curious to know if any of my fellow fibro-sleevers have experienced changes/decreases in their pain levels since being sleeved? I'm pre-op, and really hoping my symptoms will decrease as my weight goes down! Thanks in advance ☺️
