  1. Hi! I'm new to this! I'm 27 and in the pre-op stages of surgery. I have my first pre-op nutritionist appt Monday, followed by my psychology appt and a pulmonology appointment the week after. . I had to visit my primary care physician today and he was very discouraging about the surgery. He said studies show only a slight weight loss (he kept mentioning 30-40lbs) with lap band. I am 100% commited to getting surgery but his discouraging visit made me very nervous! My surgeon of course says otherwise but did anyone else find that their Primary care dr was less than encouraging?

    fatburners???

Hi, I'm very new to this,as I got banded Jan. 22nd. I've only had 1 fill and I'm not getting another for 3 more weeks,I'm always hungry have been trying hard to stick to healthy choices and exercising daily but my weight loss isn't moving in the past two weeks ,I've been thinking of maybe trying a fat burner but wasn't sure it was safe to use . Has anyone else tried fat burners? If so did they work and which one did you use? thanks, nicknock

    Self pay-

WASaBubble Butt.....yes I know about the policy having to be writtien to include it. Unfortunately they refuse to allow it. Four years ago when I started at the hospital we had BCBS and it was covered. Now we are forced to only have UHC and it is no longer covered. We thought that since they opened a bariatric unit that they would cover it. The hospital I work for is my no way in a position that they can not afford it. They are in the top of profits in this entire area. We have three hospitals and they just acquired another one. Not to include all the urgent cares and the surgery centers and the other satelite buildings they have and are building as we speak.

    Worried

Since you are at the beginning of this process, I would recommend three things. 1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success. 2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery. 3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.
  5. I have pain in my right side (near where the port is) when I sit. If I am sitting in a recliner where I keep my abdomen perfectly straight, I'm fine, but if I sit in any other kind of chair, even sitting up straight, I have a good deal of pain. Has anyone else experienced this? It doesn't feel like the port pain after surgery. It radiates from my right side around to my back. I am 5 weeks out from surgery. I also have pain in my left side, but I can't tell if it's from the band, nerve, or maybe a muscle ache. I have not overeaten, and I have never PB'd or vomited, nor have I been nauseous. It usually starts a couple of hours after I eat. Is this pain from gas? I don't know if this is normal post-op or not. I am very active with a toddler, who I lift and carry a lot during the day, I have a physical job, and I have been exercising a lot more than I was 5 weeks ago. Not sure if this could be a nerve or muscle issue, or if I'm doing something wrong being newly banded.

    Calories & protein per day?

Our surgeon said: Eat healthy. Do not eat three meals a day. Eat only when you are hungry. It is working for us. Good luck!

  9. My surgery was on a Friday and I was at work (from home) on Monday, I returned to the office the following Monday. You can do it! As for food, I pack a little lunch box with me everywhere I go. I keep an assortment of things like: yogurt, laughing cow cheese wedges, hummus, deli ham, cheese sticks, guacamole. At 2 weeks, I packed refried Beans with cheese, scrambled egg,

  12. I am a steak and chicken person as of now (not banded). I have a fear that I will never eat steak or chicken due to the band. I am also a big pizza person, but I know that has to change. I've removed red meat from my diet, but I can eat steak. I often eat chicken. I eat pizza when I want it. My question to you all is....After you switch to the solid food stage, are you able to eat some what normal, or can you not tolerate certain foods. Some people find there are things they can't tolerate. Some find that as long as they're chewing, monitoring bites, and swallowing bandster style, they can eat anything. (this is me) Some state that they can NEVER have meat or chicken...or both. some say fish (tuna, sushi) they can't eat. I would just eat the raw fish and no rice...or very little rice if possible. It's completely individual, and often seems to change. E.g. I know a LOT of people who could eat chiken in the beginning, but can't get it down now. I guess I am just normal having a concern as to the diet...way of life that will happen once I am banned. I don't want to be that, "special" diet man the rest of my life. I would guess that more bandsters than not find that they eat regular, well-balanced meals - just small ones. Which is a heckuva good approach, IMO. I would like to eat normal foods with limitation. Have a drink or three (lol) after dinner (a half our that is) The band does nothing to prevent drinking, unless you're clogged. That's one of the nice things about it, vs. some other WLS options (not that you can still drink, but that in and of itself, it doesn't exclude anything). You know what I mean...it is a concern of mine, but I am sure you have more experience than me....I am not banned yet. Just behave and we won't ban you. j/k - banned, banded, har har. It's completely individual. I had dinner with 4 other bandsters, and we all ordered something different based on 1) what we CARED to tolerate, and 2) what we COULD tolerate. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
  13. The thing about the band is that after a few months of banding you really don't care about food. It no longer matters what you are eating vs. what others are eating. Look at the new threads of newbies, they are all about what can I eat, how much can I eat, when can I eat it? After you have been banded the obsession with foods dies down and you begin eating to live, or when you remember. That would have been impossible for me to comprehend in the beginning. I would have thought that would never happen. But it has. I do admit to being a little annoyed this week because I am on a seriously strict diet until Saturday but then I'm back to my usual foods. Today the only thing I'm bored with is people commenting on my portion size. I cover it up a bit and move food around my plate so it looks like I ate more than I did, but I do get sick of people questioning why I eat such small amounts but I suspect that will happen for the rest of my life. I guess my point is that my focus has shifted from what I will eat to how I explain portion sizes to others who are nosey. No way to tell what you will be able to eat or how much of it. You won't know that until you get there. Seems as though food choices expand a bit after you have a lot of practice with the band but in the end you'll find that you just don't care.

    Surgery Canceled ?

I guess the high calcium is a risk as far as anathesia, what ever they would have given me could interact with the high calcium and cause my electrolites to go wacky. it was a risk to my heart, and uncontrolable muscle spasms. it was the anathesia dr that actually canceled it.So I have to take care of this calcium level before I can be banded. from what my primary Dr. can tell, it is probably hyperparathyroidism. Which would probably result in surgery on that. Removal of the BAD parathyroid/s. I am going to try and maintain low quanity of food, and also be very careful on what I eat. No pop, no snacks,no bread, potatoes ect. Of course when I get ready for the band, I will have to do the two week liquid diet AGAIN.... keep me posted on how you and hubby are doing. and feeling. Lois

    Body Signs

I can't have anything besides yogurt and clear liquids until 2 weeks. Then the only bread sort of item I can have are small healthier crackers like a few wheat thins and those are sparingly. At week 9 I can have flatbread. That is the only mention of bread in my plan.

    Local & Long Distance Support

I was banded three years ago and had worked with Jill before. I wanted to work with her again because I’d been struggling with my weight. I found Jill on the internet despite having troubles spelling her last name – it’s Seward not Seaward! She has a great LONG DISTRANCE program on the PHONE and it was in the evening. I don't like driving int the GTA (greater Toronto area). I started with a 3 week commitment as I wanted to see if it would work and it did! We had weekly phone sessions for emotional and psychological obstacles and nutritional coaching. We reviewed my weekly progress. Jill followed up with an email note and provided a detailed the menu plan and receipes. No body can create personalized menus like her!! Jill really cares & I signed up for 6 weeks. I’m now successfully living with the band.
  21. So this is me. My name is Kathi, 28 years old, 165cm tall and 143kgs. I've been tooing and froing about getting bariatric suregery for 2 years now. I have been big most of my life. Teased by kids as I'm sure many of you can relate to, and even worse have been discriminated against in all areas of life due to my size, including being passed over for promotions and postings to foreign climes. So not fair! So 2 years ago I got on track to get a lapband... I was scared and had a lot going on in my life at the time: Broken up relationship, job going weird, and many other things, so I chickened out after seeing the surgeon. Now, I have matured and come to know myself more (its amazing what you find out about yourself when you lose the deadwood of a bad relationship and a bad job). Now I have realised that I need this tool to stop me becoming what I see my whole family becoming. I dont want Diabetes, or heart problems, I dont want to be immobile, I dont want to be prejudiced against anymore. I have tried everything! fad diets, weight watchers, diet pills, you name it So here I am, Surgery booked in for 30 November. My Parents are giving me a loan to have it done (not that they can really afford it though, but they know its what I need...), and I will be paying it off for the next 5 years. But I feel its worth it. I now have 6 weeks of preop diet in front of me, plus learning to eat, exercise, and change the way I think. Its a hard road, but I'm hoping at the end of it, the rny will be a life saver. I'm on Day 2 of pre op diet. I think taking all things in context it's been successful. Minor slip ups, but I'm proud of my salmon, bok choi and broccoli in the face of others eating a mountain of pizza around me that I was pretty strong to only steal 2 bites of pizza. Still not ideal, but better than caving and eating a half pizza like I normally would. Plus going to 3 pubs this weekend and only having a tiny taste of beers that the others bought. I have the motivation, I just hope I can hold onto it! 40 minute wii dance workout this evening - so shattered. My cat thinks I'm crazy, but what does she know, she's a cat! I'm looking forward to sharing my journey with all of you, and sharing in yours along the way

    fill gone in two weeks

Yes mam that is a normal occurance. 6 weeks is the usually number between fills. Your restriction may come back when you don't expect it. So be careful and keep eating like you were with restriciton.
  23. Hello! I have a question? I am on puréed proteins for a week. I had my surgery on March 3rd. When I eat I am never getting that really full feeling like I thought I would get. I just get a tightness feeling right in the middle of my cheat when I am done with food. Does that mean you are full? Thanks everyone!

    feeling down

I don't plan on giving up. It is a tough one though. I wish I still had insurance. that might have been a great option. Over here in Downers Grove IL. the band at the wish center is 10,850 and an extra 1,000 for visits and fills. not bad if I say so. I am going to try using my mom and a co signer in a couple of weeks. I'll just keep on trying. I am lucky to have her in my life. She supports my descision. But I decided to go closet with the rest of my family. anywho, I am keeping a good attitude.

    feeling down

I have my seminar on the 30th and very excited to get the ball rolling. I talked to my doctor’s office and asked if I could get the surgery done in January, Sometime, because I am self-pay. They said absolutely. Good news so far. I sent out my loan info a week ago and was turned down. I am still going to the seminar but feel like I shouldn't bother. I mean with out my loan I am without the band. She said then we will just keep trying. (gotta love that women) My mom is going to try to see if she can step in. But like me her credit isn't the best. I feel like I am falling deeper in a hole and can't get out. I have struggled for so long with my weight. All my thin friends keep saying I can do it by myself. I try to explain that I know I can lose it myself. But the question is for how long. Its not like I have never lost weight, and put it back on, plus an extra 30lbs. Not to mention I look at my family. They are all struggling with their weight. They have major health problems. I don't want to battle my health and weight for the rest of my life. I just want to be healthy and look fabulous being healthy. Sorry this is turning into a rant. Even my family that is large, thinks I should just diet, like them. FOREVER!!! I want a tool that is going to change my habits, and not allow me to fall back in to all my bad habits. I am not expecting a miracle I realize it is a tool. But I know a tool is what will work for me. I am tiered of the yoyo. I have been on here a while and feel like if anyone can understand its all of you. Well all in all I am going to keep trying to get this loan. I have no insurance so that is why the loan is my option. I will tell you this if I have to hit up Santa Claus or give the Easter bunny a lap dance than that is my next move. My mom always says that things work out in the end. So I will keep that in mind. Wow, I feel better just sharing this with you guys. Thanks for listening. xoxo
