  1. I’m 55 and am looking to do a revision from lap band to bypass in September. I currently weigh 240 the highest I’ve ever been at 5 ‘2” and am hoping to get down to 150.

Anyone 5' 1"? Low starting bmi? Care to share?

I'm BMI almost 37. Having a revision from a failed lapland to RNY. So terrified and excited at the same time. Have you girls outed yourselves to everyone or managed to keep to yourself? Possible with restaurants etc?
  3. Can’t seem to make heads or tails of my benefit.... Has anyone had a revision from Sleeve to RYN using Fed BC/BS? If so, how long did you have to wait? Did you have to go to “school” again?
  4. I had MGB surgery 15 months ago with a very experienced surgeon. However, 8 months post-op I developed bile reflux. It is no joke, very painful, and has caused Barrett’s Esophagus. The only solution for me is the revise to an RNY this summer. I wish I had the RNY originally.

    Sleeve to RNY

I had my revision to bypass done on 6/26. I had the sleeve in 2014, and has every complication you could think of. It was awful. Once I learned I would have to convert to bypass due to severe reflux, I panicked. It actually went great. It was so much better than the sleeve. Does it hurt? Yep, I am sore. I am able to deal with it, walk a lot, get my sips in, and work on protein goals. I was too sick to do any of that before so this has been a nice change. I don’t regret it at all.

How are the May sleevers doing?

I had my Band to Sleeve revision on May 17. I weighed 180 (30 BMI) on day of surgery. I weigh 160 today at 5 weeks out. I’ve been stalled for a week but I’ve stopped stressing about things I can’t control. I’m already halfway to my goal! Not having any trouble with any foods as long as I chew everything to purée consistently.  I had a band for over a decade, that’s just second nature.  I don’t often get hungry but when I do, very small portions of protein rich foods fill me right up.  I’m so pleased with this choice.

    Slow losers

My BMI was 30 on sleeve day. I was actually losing faster pre band to sleeve revision than I am now, HOWEVER, I am much more comfortable and healthy now! Additionally, even though I FEEL like things are going slowly, I just realized that the “only 20 pounds” I’ve lost in these 5 weeks post-op its me HALF WAY to my goal!!!!

    Sleeve to RNY

I can’t answer all your questions but I had a revision from sleeve to bypass and I don’t regret it this far. Sometimes weight loss can be slower for revisions but I am doing well. I too had GERD, I see more and more people having sleeve to bypass revisions. I have had no complications *knocks on wood* i have kaiser
  9. So it been some time since I posted. I was sleeved in 2012. I was blessed with being the 5% with complications such as GERD and now I have a hiatal hernia. I was told the a RNY is no only option. I desperately tried to find an alternate solution to no avail. I would like to know a few things. 1) for those who have fed bc/bs., how long did it take to get a revision to RYN approval. 2) have you had any complications since the revision. 3) any regrets? I just idea of losing the with you have gained because of all the crackers they manage the GERD is appealing but I am scared out of my mind. A little depressed. Feeling like a failure.

    Do I make the cut?

Hey Taylor (don't worry about not taking my advise, I wont' get offended and call you out for making your own decisions.) I hit 370 sometime in 2010 and decided to do something about it. I chose the band, the sleeve wasn't fully approved yet, and the bypass scared me. The idea of it being permanent changes to my anatomy bothered me. I wanted something that could be removed at a future date. So, I went with the band. Nov 2011, I had the band installed. Surgery wasn't that big of a deal, I was kept overnight because I have sleep apnea. Pain was moderate but tolerable. After what was covered by insurance, I was out of pocket somewhere around the 5k mark. I took 2 months out of work, mainly because I had to drive to and from Boston, and travel times were minimum 1 hour, upwards of 4 hours, so I wanted to be 100% healed before doing all that driving. I followed all the instructions I was given, got my fills and adjustments as required, and ultimately lost 70 lbs within a year or so. (combined with the pre-op diet etc). I'd get stuck on things maybe once or twice a week. Leafy greens and other fibrous veggies that didn't chew down to "baby food" were uncomfortable enough where I started to avoid them. I got stuck on lean meats, etc. So I got frustrated that, the healthy foods I was supposed to be eating, caused issues thanks to the band. I gained a bit back, then fought to lose it again, this happened a few times. I never could break that 300 mark, no matter what I did. The band was easily eaten around, things I shouldn't be eating... were the things that didn't cause issues. I became depressed, I felt like a failure, the band was reported to have all these amazing benefits... and I wasn't seeing them, I stopped checking in with my surgeon unless I needed some adjustments due to illness or getting stuck badly enough where my stomach swelled up. I was still way too overweight, wasn't eating as well as I should be, I just wasn't happy with how things were not living up to the bands reported outcomes. After almost 7 years with the band, I finally dragged myself back into my surgeons office, defeated, and I confessed to my surgeon that I was a failure. Boy was I surprised when she told me that my outcomes and dealings were typical, and that it wasn't me that was the problem, it was the band. She went out to tell me that 2 of the major manufacturers have stopped making bands and replacement parts for them. We discussed our options for revision, I was set on the sleeve. My surgeon said she refuses to do band to sleeve revisions because the staple line for the sleeve runs right across the band area, and that scar tissue build up at the band site increases the chances for staple line failure. She advised that others in the same practice would do the sleeve revision, but she won't because of the added complication rates. I trust my surgeon, and I really wanted her to do the revision because she installed the band in the first place. So, I pondered for a bit and finally decided that the bypass, as scary as it sounded, was my best option. Restriction only didn't work for me with the band, why would I think that restriction only with the sleeve would be any different. I needed the malabsorption to ensure that I would lose the weight I needed to. March 2nd I started my pre-op diet, March 21st I was revised to the bypass and I'm down almost 60 lbs since March 2nd. I truly wish I went bypass from the get go. The revision surgery was not uneventful. What should have taken 2 hours, took 6+. My band, even though all scans, imaging, scoping showed nothing wrong, the band was 100% completely encapsulated in scar tissue and took my surgical team more than 3 times longer to remove. I'm not even sure what would have happened if I left it in place. Hopefully that answers some of your questions, if you have more, please feel free to shoot me a message.
  11. My revision was yesterday due to severe reflux. They have me on Protonix while at the hospital, and I will go back to Prilosec and Zantac once I’m home. I will then slowly go off of them. So far so good, as I used to taste and feel reflux even on meds.
  12. I had my revision yesterday, and I really hope it helps my reflux. I had erosions in my throat, and that scares me. My grandfather died of esophageal cancer and it started with reflux. I hope things get figured out for everyone!
  13. So I’m having surgery on Friday a revision of a sleeve to RNY bypass. They put me on the pre-op diet yesterday but I have been experiencing extreme nausea and dizziness has anyone ever experience this? Should I call my doctor? I don’t want him to postpone the surgery
  14. This is going to differ based on so many factors. Bandsters are going to have their own versions. Sleevers are going to have their own versions. Bypassers are going to have their own versions. I don't recall the diet for my band.. But for my revision to bypass, I was on Puree's before I even left the hospital, was on Puree's for a full month post op, then was cleared for soft solids then 3 weeks later full solids and raws..

Heard of Dr. Ara Kashishian in Cali?

Where did I say I want a revision to DS?
  16. I’m having surgery on Friday but it is a revision sleeve to RNY due to severe acid reflux
  17. I am almost 7 weeks out sleeve to bypass and I too feel no hunger/no restriction. But I eat VERY little. Less than 2 ounces a day. I just can’t get use to food yet. We are still healing. i have read that weight loss may be slower for these types of revisions. My surgery was May 10th & I have lost 29lbs. 50 lbs from my highest. I believe what you are feeling is normal. try and get all your water in an way possible. You’re body won’t let go of anything if you aren’t drinking your fluids. Have sugar free popsicles as liquid (my nutritionist said it counts as 2 ounces). And try sugar free jello; those are liquids.
  18. I’m nearly a month out from my revision surgery, and I don’t think I am doing well. I feel restriction somewhat, but it’s strange because I rarely feel hungry and/or full. Is this normal? I get so confused because I know I need to eat, but I don’t get hungry. I’m getting in my protein (60g) but not my water (about 32oz vs 64oz), and I started surgery at 240 on May 30th, and I only lost 10 pounds since then. I am finishing up purred stage, and start soft food next week. Is weight loss slower after a revision, am I driving myself mad? I already had a failed sleeve, maybe it’s just my anxiety that the bypass will fail to. I have a month check up this week so hopefully he can fill me in. But, do you guys have any input?
  19. Thanks Marina. Why are you wanting a revision to DS?
  20. I had revision from VSG to bypass on May 22 due to severe GERD. I felt mild GERD maybe once or twice within the first 10 days post op. My surgeon told me to take Omeprazole for three months and then stop. I have not had any GERD since starting the medication. I hope you find relief for your GERD soon. I know the pain can be unbearable.

On the West Coast, the BEST DS surgeons are Dr. Ara Keshishian in Pasadena, CA and Dr. John Rabkin in San Francisco, CA. They are also the most skilled at revision surgeries. Another great DS surgeon is Dr. Folahan Ayoola in North Texas (Denton, Frisco, & Flower Mound). They all do the real DS, not SIPS (aka SADI), which isn’t the same thing. With SIPS/SADI surgery, you don’t get long term fat malabsorption, will have less weight loss than DS, there is no medical code for surgeons to honestly bill for it as insurance companies consider it experimental, and yet you’ll have permanent requirements for extra vitamin & mineral supplementation to prevent serious deficiencies.

    DS Scheduled for 7.11.18 w/Dr. K

Congrats on your upcoming DS surgery with Dr. K. He’s the BEST! I’m hoping to get revision surgery scheduled with him this summer.
  23. I revised one week ago due to severe acid reflux. My understanding was my reflux would resolve immediately. However, that has not been the case. I'm not having the regurgitation of liquids. My main issue is my stomach being on fire all the way up to my throat. Even drinking water worsens the pain and it's constant pain. Can anyone shed some light as to why this is happening? I'm about to lose my mind.

Hello again & what might I need to know?

Just be aware that the MGB has a risk of bile reflux, whereas the RNY does not. So make sure to discuss this with your surgeon. FYI: I had the MGB and am below goal weight (yeah, success), but I am suffering from bile reflux so will be revising to RNY this summer.
